With tens of thousands expected to attend Tel Aviv's Pride Parade, hundreds of police officers were deployed across the city from Thursday morning to ensure public safety and block roads as part of a massive law enforcement operation.
The march will be held on Thursday afternoon, with participants gathering at 4 p.m. and marching at 5 p.m. along the beachside route from the corner of Shalag Street and Hebert Samuel Boulevard, until the parade ends at Daniel Street at around 8 p.m. A number of roads in the area were closed from 6 a.m. Police said they will not allow parking along the parade route, have banned all weapons from the area, and have forbidden the flying of drones without prior permission.
The traditional party that typically takes place at the end of the parade will be held at Ganei Yehoshua in the north of the city on Friday from 12 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Some of Israel's biggest artists, including 2018 Eurovision winner Netta Barzilai, Ran Danker, Nunu, Ivri Lider and others are set to perform at the event.
"Our goal needs to be clear to every police officer and commander - that every participant in the parade tomorrow returns home safely, and with a smile," said Tel Aviv District Commander Amichai Eshed, after police completed their preparation for the events.
Over 170,000 people participated in last year's parade, which marched down Rokach Boulevard in the north of the city rather than along the traditional route in central Tel Aviv.
An estimated 30,000 people marched in the Jerusalem Pride Parade last week under tight security.

2023.06.08 06:34 1968FullAlbum [TOMT] Logical fallacy described by this example about driving…
I was in a conversation once where someone was describing a logical fallacy or concept and used a story to illustrate it. The story basically went like this:
Driver Dan wants to turn right from a small residential street onto a busy boulevard during rush hour. He can see a long line of cars, 20 in total. The gaps between the first 19 cars, and their speed, make it clearly unsafe to turn between them. There is a gap between cars 19 and 20 that is easily safe enough to make his turn. Dan notices the safe gap after car 19 but also sees that after the 20th car there are no more cars, so he waits until the 20th car has passed to make his turn.
The logical fallacy being described was basically that Dan was misinterpreting a safe (or acceptable) situation as dangerous (or undesirable) because there was another, overly safe alternative available.
Is there a term for this? It’s related to the cliche “
the perfect is the enemy of the good” and the Nirvana fallacy but it isn’t those. I thought the person describing it was using a term as if it had an official name but maybe not.

2023.06.08 05:43 evandunfee Steveston Hwy MUP Passes Council!
Tonight at a special council meeting council voted to build the Steveston Hwy Multi Use Pathway phases 1 and 2 (2 Rd to Shell). The 4-5 vote against from general purposes committee (Richmond has committees that deal with items and then they come to council to be voted on but some of the committees like General Purposes and Finances have all 9 of them on it, so it’s a little confusing) was flipped with Laura Gillanders changing her vote after having some of her concerns addressed by staff.
So what does this mean? Steveston Hwy will be getting a 3.0m wide multi use path on the south side with a 1-1.5m boulevard with planting and trees separating it from Steveston.
The project is being funded with $5.5 million in external grants along with $5.6 million from Developer Cost Charges (fees developers pay for growth related infrastructure) and ~$350,000 from City Reserves.
This iteration of the plan has already been tendered so construction can begin shortly and staff said it will likely be complete by next fall.
No traffic lanes will be lost on Steveston and the centre lane widths will remain the same. However the curb lane which currently varies from 3.3m to over 4m will be narrowed to 3.25m (by contrast the Knight Street Bridge is reportedly 3.0-3.1m per lane). It’s been shown that narrowing lanes towards these widths helps to reduce speeds, which is a problem on Steveston Hwy as the speed limit is 50 but 70 is more typical.
Next up: phase 3 has previously been approved (2 Rd to Railway) but expect that to also come back to council and be contentious.
The Mayor, councillors Loo, Au, Wolfe and Gillanders all spoke really well on the importance of this project. Which some may find an interesting mix but to me not surprising.
Anyway I’m stoked about this so just wanted to share! Feel free to ask me any questions about it as I’m quite familiar at this point.

2023.06.08 00:11 thedoulaforyoula ISO route suggestions for backpacking in Smoky Mts with kids (ages 5/8/11). We’re a couple years away from being able to do Alum Cave to Mount LeConte. Would prefer to keep it 5mi or less per day. Thanks!
We’d love to go in late July because it’s 17386° in Memphis but I’m having trouble planning a route they can handle. Thinking 2 or 3 nights. My husband and I did Alum Cave—>Mount Le Conte—>Boulevard—>Icewater Spring—>Newfound Gap and it was a lot for us. My younger 2 aren’t ready for the elevation gain on the Alum Cave trail. We don’t necessarily have to stay at Mount LeConte, but I don’t know much at all about the rest of the park. Any suggestions?

2023.06.07 22:30 theMezz 'Olmsted City?' What’s in a name? Plenty for city of Utica
romesentinel.com /stories/guest-column-olmsted-city-whats-in-a-name-plenty-for-city-of-utica,182927 GUEST COLUMN: 'Olmsted City?' What’s in a name? Plenty for city of Utica
Phil Bean, chair of Olmsted City7-8 minutes
People sometimes ask why we call our nonprofit group “Olmsted City” rather than something like “Utica Olmsted Parks.”
That’s understandable; we are currently focused on East Utica’s 62-acre Frederick T. Proctor Park. Still, we aim to do much more.
Four years ago, I returned after 23 years in Boston and Philadelphia and bought a home in the city of Utica. I wanted to contribute to Utica’s increasingly promising redevelopment efforts. Convinced that our parks are among our most important quality-of-life assets — they certainly made a difference in my life — I began working in 2019 to rejuvenate them, and two years ago I founded Olmsted City partly to promote that work.
It’s not enough simply to say we have parks — for decades, we’ve had too much talk and not enough sustained action to restore and maintain them. In contrast, by the end of 2022-23, Olmsted City will have spent over $250,000 on F.T. Proctor Park. Last year, we also recruited 150 volunteers who invested 1,100 hours in the park.
This is not a hobby for the amusement of the privileged or just a historic preservation project. Olmsted City is driven by the conviction that everyone, including the least fortunate, deserves beautiful recreational spaces. Indeed, such ideas drove Thomas R. Proctor to embark on a park-building binge more than 120 years ago. And today, a much higher proportion of our underprivileged neighbors live within a 10-minute walk of our Olmsted parks than do the most fortunate in this region.
This reality is at the forefront of everything we do.
Public health research has proven that visiting urban parks confers significant physical and mental health benefits. The local diabetes and blood pressure rates are higher than the state average, and a disproportionate number of Uticans (notably but not exclusively refugees) have experienced trauma.
For many such Uticans, parks have medicinal power. Healthy park tree canopies also cool temperatures and reduce pollution for those who live nearby.
Despite our dedication to parks, however, we call ourselves “Olmsted City” because we are also trying to rebrand Utica — not just one institution in it, but the entire city. “Olmsted” is by far the most nationally recognizable name to which Utica can attach itself. Very few outsiders have heard of Munson, Williams, or Proctor, and not many more know who Conkling or Seymour were.
For over a century, in contrast, the Olmsted family fundamentally transformed the American landscape. This fact recently inspired a highly successful, year-long nationwide celebration of the bicentennial of Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr., the inventor of the American urban park, the co-designer of Central Park and innumerable others, and the first person to call for a national park system.
His son, who did so much in Utica, designed the landscaping for the White House, the Jefferson Memorial, and many other nationally famous sites. He also helped save the California giant redwoods and start the National Park Service.
People from major metropolitan areas celebrate the name “Olmsted” because their lives are enriched by Olmsted family creations like not just Central Park, but Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, Boston’s Emerald Necklace system, Philadelphia’s FDR Park, Montreal’s Mount Royal Park, the Seattle parks system — and on and on it goes.
So, who cares about what people in big cities think? Uticans should. Utica is definitely on an upswing, but it’s still an under-resourced city. We need more outside capital. Big-city money and talent are helping to transform other small cities. Many people who might bring these goods here are accustomed to parks like F.T. Proctor … but they also expect them to be well-maintained.
In addition, the businesses we’d like to attract are interested in quality of life for their workers, increasingly many of whom value the outdoors. Mention that we have an Olmsted-designed park, and it makes many such people see Utica in a different light — and so should we.
However, we don’t have just one Olmsted park. We are the smallest U.S. city with an Olmsted parks and parkway system that’s over 70% the size of Central Park and comprises about 90% of Utica’s public parkland.
It offers diverse opportunities to engage with nature and healthful exercise: miles of wooded paths; tennis, basketball and (soon) pickleball courts; baseball and soccer fields; ice skating (coming next season); swimming pools; biking paths; picnic areas; a golf course; a skate park; dramatic vistas of the valley.
We also have five beautiful Olmsted-designed neighborhoods: Brookside, Proctor Boulevard, Talcott Road, Sherman Gardens, Ridgewood … and in New Hartford, there’s Hoffman Road.
About a tenth of the landmass of the city of Utica — more if you exclude our vast wetlands — was designed by Olmsted and his firm, Olmsted Brothers.
Olmsted City is dedicated to our green spaces, and we have an impressive record of commitment to them — but we are also dedicated to promoting a story for a new Utica, a story that is positive, true, and compelling to outsiders.
It is about having the sort of local pride that attracts opportunity. It is about elevating perceptions of Utica to promote our economic development. The message in our name is that there is something special here: Utica is an Olmsted city, and we should celebrate and protect our Olmsted heritage.
Toward this end, last year alone we planted 27 trees and more than 2,100 other perennial plants, installed five benches, repaired a historic stone staircase, created two new destinations, and cleaned up the long-neglected park gate at F.T. Proctor Park. Unlike many other organizations, we have no paid staff or a multimillion-dollar endowment — our work is dependent on civic-minded volunteers and donors who share our vision and appreciate our track record of getting things done.
We are currently in the midst of reconstructing the park’s previously deteriorated Lily Pond, a 1913 Olmsted creation that’s one of the region’s most iconic spots. It should be running again later this month. Come see it then, but in the meantime, please begin thinking and speaking proudly of Utica as an Olmsted city.
Editor’s note — Phil Bean is chair of Olmsted City; the president of the Utica Public Library Board of Trustees, and a Proctor graduate. He is a former college dean and author of “The Urban Colonists: Italian American Identity and Politics in Utica, New York,” published by Syracuse University Press, and other works about Utica’s political and ethnic history. He is also the co-creator, with Dennis Dewey, of a series of well-received, short YouTube videos called “Utica: An Olmsted City.” submitted by

- [NEWS] LMG Corp sold to Maxwealth Infinity for ₱402-M... LMG Corp [LMG 3.35 suspendedl] [link] shocked the market with news that it signed a share purchase agreement with Maxwealth Infinity Holdings (MIH) that will see MIH take a 67% stake in LMG for ₱402 million (₱3.10/share). MIH is a holding company owned and chaired by Alfonso Huang (company website), who is also the President of e-pon, an e-money app. MIH was founded in 2021, MIH has investments in “various financial and information technology companies”, but its website reveals an additional interest in real estate development and entertainment. The disclosure said that MIH made the LMG purchase with the intent to “invest in the hospitality industry and the construction industry”, and that it will “expand the portfolio of [LMG] to include the operating subsidiaries of [MIH].” The disclosure said that LMG and MIH intend to complete the tender offer and close the transaction within 60 days.
- MB: This one was truly surprising to me, both because LMG is a sleepy stock and because I have no idea who Maxwealth Infinity is. The name sounds like any of the thousands of Facebook groups that ply scam financial advice, so I’m glad that the disclosure specifically said that Maxwealth “does not solicit, accept, or take investments/placements from the public”. My quick due diligence on the company didn’t turn up much of substance either. Their website reads like a try-hard resume cover letter, filled with bland fluffer words like “impact”, “contribute”, “strategic”, “enriching”, and “potential”. A media scan turns up a paid promo piece about Mr. Huang, and a story about MIH donating sacks of rice to typhoon victims. The MIH career page shows that they’re hiring eight positions for their Taguig office, all posted three days ago. It’s not really clear what MIH is, what it’s done, or what it plans to do. I can’t help but feel SquidPay vibes, but I hope that it’s more tangible and substantive than that.
- [UPDATE] MPI still searching for a valuation firm... Metro Pacific [MPI 4.42 ▼0.9%; 83% avgVol] [link] Chairman, Manny V. Pangilinan, recently said that the MPI Consortium was still in the middle of a process to find an acceptable firm to perform the valuation to act as the basis of the MPI Consortium’s tender offer price. MVP said that they’ve been “given a list of accredited firms”, and that there are “probably only two” on that list that do not have the kind of conflicts that would come from working with another company in the MVP-led group of companies in the past. MVP said that he’s had “indirect” talks with some of the larger shareholders (SSS and GSIS), revealed that those groups had negative feedback on the initial price, but would not commit to a higher price being the likely outcome of the next valuation.
- MB: Aside from the whole “valuations are weird” angle and the fact that MPI is too sophisticated to have been caught by surprise about the potential accreditation of the first valuation firm it used, I’m mostly disappointed that it feels like MPI might already be losing that brief period of intense swagger. MPI has been a sleepy giant for most of my investing life, so it was pretty shocking for it to suddenly jolt to life and start making aggressive moves into the agricultural sector. There was the Axelum [AXLM 2.48 ▼2.4%; 5% avgVol] stake, then the announcement of the massive agricultural facility, and don’t get me started about that SP New Energy [SPNEC 1.46 unch; 0% avgVol] deal! My point is that MPI was rewriting its narrative in real-time while demonstrating the agility and nerve of a company with a clear vision for a future filled with big bets and growth. Where did that energy go? I want more of that green corporate raider energy, and less of this sleepy corporate bureaucracy drama.
- [NOTES] Quick takes from around the market...
- Boulevard Holdings [BHI 0.08 ▲2.5%; 165% avgVol] [link] appeared to signal that it will be suspended for a while and that it has decided to spend this time releasing a mini-series of disclosures to explain the development strategy for each of the company’s “major assets”, its “significant land parcels”, and its “cash hoard”. The most recent disclosure started with its Fridays Siargao location.
- MB Quick Take: This is such a weird look that I don’t even know where to start. Dripping info to shareholders gives off massive “long suspension” vibes, but it also manages to give off “we are just making it up as we go along” vibes. If you know the strategy now, why not tell us now? I don’t know if I can beat the BHI dead horse any longer, though. BHI, more like “Belated Hypothesizing Inc”, amirite?
- Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) [link] revealed that the May 2023 Consumer Price Index reading was 120.9, which was 6.1% higher y/y. The rate of inflation in April was 6.6%, based on a CPI reading of 120.9.
- MB Quick Take: Keen readers will notice that the actual CPI measurement was the same between April and May, meaning that the actual level of prices didn’t change at all from month to month. The only thing that changed was that April 2022’s CPI reading was lower because it was at the start of the long and intense price inflation period we saw throughout FY22. Remember: inflation might go down, but (generally) prices won’t.
- Repower Energy Development [REDC 5.00 pre-IPO] [link] provided an updated IPO schedule after it had previously paused the listing process to take on a significant anchor investor from Japan. The new pricing date is June 23, with an offer period from June 28 through July 14, and a listing ten days later on July 24.
- MB Quick Take: It looks like the bones of the offering are the same (230 million shares for ₱5.00/share, with 87% primary), but investors are going to want to pay close attention to the updated prospectus that we should get once the price has been set. Will REDC share any information about the anchor investor, and is the anchor investor the type that provides any strategic advantages for REDC going forward? Energy stocks are hot, but IPOs have been terrible for investors lately. Will REDC’s pricing take the recent performance into account to entice more retail investors to take a look?
- DoubleDragon [DD 7.20 unch; 19% avgVol] [link] said that its 548-room Hotel101 in Cebu is 100% sold-out 21 months after it started the pre-sale process, and 12 months before its project completion date. DD also took the time in this disclosure to let us know about how this location will be the first to “adopt” the “AI designed Hotel101 Banig accent design”.
- MB Quick Take: I don’t know how I feel about DD name-dropping AI as the designer of a banig. Well, that’s not true, I know how I feel about it, but I guess I’m just not sure how DD anticipated that we’d feel about it? Because that’s hilarious. This was meant to show that Hotel101 would “always stay ahead of the curve in technological advances”, but I think its inclusion sends the opposite message.

2023.06.07 21:05 evening_wanderlust 2005 Suzuki Boulevard C90 vs. 2022 Genuine Rattler 200i
Looking for something to get me around town— help me decide
Hi! I’m looking into getting my motorcycle license and buying my first bike. I need something to get me around town and get to college classes. Around Charlotte, NC. I’d also like to do some day trips, to the mountains and such. My budget is about $3500. I want a bike that has good storage and enough power to keep me from getting bored/frustrated.
After doing some research, I’ve found a couple bikes.
First:
https://www.cycletrader.com/listing/2005-Suzuki-BOULEVARD+C90-5026467449 Second:
https://www.cycletrader.com/listing/2022-Genuine+Scooter+Company-Rattler+200i-5026225843 I know the second isn’t a motorcycle, but I thought a scooter might also work. I’d have to buy some upgrades on it though, which would add to the cost. I see them costing about the same in the end. The scooter gets more miles to the gallon, but it has significantly less power. But I don’t know what kind of condition the Suzuki’s in.
Is the Suzuki a good deal? Will that bike be reliable? Is that a good first motorcycle? What about the scooter? Which is a smarter purchase?
Feel free to give me other recommendations.

2023.06.07 15:41 damaged_euphoria Summertime Sadness is one of Lana’s best songs
Everyone doesn’t give it the credit it deserves. I mean obviously it’s her most popular song, but I feel like people kinda discredit it for being a basic hit compared to the rest of her discography. Whenever I see lists or rankings or whatever people don’t even put it in their top 50 Lana. Popularity of the song aside I think it’s top 10 Lana tbh even if it’s not as amazing as some songs off NFR or Boulevard.

2023.06.07 01:25 Academic_Tear_9418 [TOMT][Arcade] racing game that requires seat belt
This is super obscure, but I played this game that requires a seat belt because the seat moves in simulation of the actual race. There’s a button on the steering wheel that makes the cars do a 360, there’s a giant blue button that you hit the nitrous with, and it has a gas and brake pedal. It also takes your photo.
It seemed relatively new, and I played it at a venue called the BLVD (pronounced Boulevard).

2023.06.06 15:54 amion_amion Travel tip for Sydney
My wife and I visited Sydney last weekend and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. Really had no idea where would be the best place to stay or visit but just thought I’d share our experience for anyone who might be unsure about how to plan their own trip to Sydney, especially overseas visitors unfamiliar with Sydney, because I think we made/fluked some good choices. While not an exhaustive list by any means, it is of places I would thoroughly recommend and probably visit again. We are 55 yo. from Melbourne, and have only visited Sydney very briefly in the past concentrating mainly around Circular Quay, Darling Harbour, Manly, Opera House, Harbour Bridge, so previously not really experienced everything Sydney has to offer. All times below are walking distance from our hotel.
Accommodation: Sydney Boulevard Hotel (90 William St) Great central location. Very reasonable price ($240/night). 12 minutes to two stations (Museum, St James), Woolloomooloo, Darlinghurst, Royal Botanical Gardens. 21 minutes to Darling Harbour, 24 minutes to Circular Quay.
Breakfast: Industry Beans (York St. 17 minutes) and The Rusty Rabbit (Forbes St, Darlinghurst. 12 minutes). Also considered Quick Brown Fox Eatery (Pyrmont) and Parlour (next to the foyer of the State Theatre, Market St). Will definitely visit next trip.
Lunch: Harry’s Cafe de Wheels. Always knew of the history, just had to experience it since we stumbled across it while exploring Finger Wharf.
Dinner: Rekodo (Bangaroo House. 21 minutes) and Aster (Rooftop of InterContinental Sydney Hotel, stunning views from the 32nd floor looking north over Sydney Harbour. 21 minutes).
Drinks: Smoke (Bangaroo House. 21 minutes) and Slims (Rooftop, Hyde Park House. 2 minutes)
Some different interesting places visited: Finger Wharf, Anzac Memorial, Hyde Park, Carriageworks, Queen Victoria Building, University of Sydney quadrangle.
Hope someone finds this information useful for their trip to this beautiful city. Feel free to comment and suggest any improvements for our next trip.

2023.06.06 14:07 Jackviator The Spacer’s Guide to Caring For Your Pet Human (Part 20)
<<
FIRST <
PREVIOUS Hello, spacers!
On this episode, the group takes a stab at historical reenactments, the author takes some… “
subtle” comedic jabs at certain contemporary events, and we find out where they’ve been hoarding the post-apocalyptic Twinkies.™
As always, I hope you enjoy. :)
——
As the group exited the Air Force base and began heading towards their destination, Kate looked at the surroundings as they walked. The area looked relatively untouched by the chaos of the past few weeks. The only evidence of it was an enormous pillar of smoke in the distance.
As Jack noticed Kate and a few others in the group staring at it, he nodded in understanding.
“That’s downtown Saint Paul, or at least the remains of it. From what we’ve been able to gather, the nuke we couldn’t stop in time exploded almost directly above the Capitol building. We only managed to put out the last of the fires in what little remains of downtown earlier today.”
“…How many people-“
Anticipating the question, Jack cut her off.
“We don’t know. …We may
never know. We can only speculate.”
Kate’s face fell.
“Yeah, I figured that’d be the answer…”
Kate remained morosely silent as they approached the fort. Jack turned to address the crowd.
“Welcome to historic Fort Snelling. …Well, historic to us humans, anyway. Having a fort two centuries old is probably chump change to all of you from a time perspective, eh?”
Kate’s brow furrowed in confusion as she looked up at the stone walls of the fort, its stone tower chock-full of early-1800’s firearm loopholes meant for muskets.
“Wait, what?! …When they said we were going to “Fort Snelling,” I figured it’d be an active military base. Why’re we using a historic site…?”
Jack chuckled.
“It wasn’t actually the military’s decision to do that. A couple days after the bombs fell, a group of survivors moved into the fort. When questioned, I believe the leader of the initial group was quoted as saying “EMPs can’t knock out a big damn wall.” She was right; the stone walls of the fort are a great deterrent to looters and other kinds of people looking for trouble, and it’s easily defensible. Given that we obviously had
way bigger things to worry about at the time, we just let them be.
Then, as more and more people showed up to our Air Force base looking for help, we decided the fort would make a good site for a refugee camp. The original group didn’t object; they actually welcomed the security having others around brought, especially once we started the organized armed patrols a few days ago.”
Y’ggdrasog piped up from beside Kate, a bit of indignation in his tone.
<“That’s all well and good, but what about respecting its historic significance? …Preserving the past, and all that?”>
“Relax. The only truly historic things here are a few of the buildings. The vast majority of what was on display inside said buildings- antique-looking tin cups, butter churns, muskets, that sort of thing- were just modern-made replicas, to give visitors an idea of what the fort used to look like back when it was still in use.
…We’ve actually thrown the vast majority of that junk into those “assimilator” thingies you Collective types brought along with you. It was either that, or burn them to keep warm. …Way I figure it, we can always just make more fake “historic” tchotchkes when we’re not fighting for the survival of our species, eh?”
Y’ggdrasog crossed his arms, and while he was clearly still unhappy about it, relented.
<“…Alright, fair enough...”>
As the group finally passed through the fort’s front gate, Kate could see a veritable sea of tents in the center of the area. They had passed plenty of tents on the way there in parking lots, boulevards and so on, but not nearly to this level of density.
Kate marveled at the sight, leaning toward Y’ggdrasog to murmur.
“People must have fought to get placed in here until there was literally no room left, and the tents were packed in like sardines.”
Y’ggdrasog gave her a quizzical look.
<“…What’s a “sardine?””>
“It's just a- …nevermind, it’s not important…”
Migtryl began to speak as the rest of the group filed through the gate.
<“Here and a few spots outside the fort are where you’ll be working for the most part. We reserved several tents for you to use both in and outside the fort, customized with your biologies in mind. I’ll start by giving you all a tour of the premises, so you can familiarize yourself with the different areas you might be needed.
…Starting off, over there you’ll see the impromptu medical center we’ve constructed. If you have any prior medical experience in your work history, you will be placed there. Next, we’ll be moving to…”>
Migtryl began walking off, talking and occasionally pointing with a wing or leg as they went and the group trailed behind them. As Kate tried her best to keep pace with Y’ggdrasog’s long strides, she could see that the crowds of humans inside the fort were parting like a sea around them, just like they behaved at the runway. Many looked at them with fear in their eyes, others with disgusted sneers.
Kate’s shoulders slumped as she finally realized:
Almost no one trusts them yet. She was so lost in thought over the implications of this that she bumped into Y’ggdrasog, who had abruptly stopped walking. She glanced up at him to see him staring toward a group of humans near the edge of the medical center. His glow was crimson, his eyes haunted. She followed his gaze to see-
Her eyes widened.
Oh no… The man he was staring at lay on a cot under an improvised tarp-tent. They were being tended to by several medical personnel (both human and alien) that were changing the bandages covering their body, and little wonder; they were absolutely
covered in burns.
Before Kate could think of what to do to help her friend, she saw J’Ffrane almost literally materialize between Y’ggdrasog and the bandaged burn victim. Their voice was warm and soothing as they spoke.
<“Feel this moment, accept it, then let it pass. Remember? …Don’t let yourself drown in it.”>
It was like Y’ggdrasog was awakened from a dream as he blinked a few times and glanced at J’Ffrane.
<“Y-yes, I- …I remember...”>
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, slowly letting it out in a shaky exhale as he turned to Kate, opening his eyes once more to meet her concerned gaze.
<“Come on, let’s not fall too far behind.”>
“…Are you alright?”
Y’ggdrasog gave her a weak smile, though the crimson of his stressful glow remained.
<“Of course I’m not. …But that’s not going to stop me from helping your people.”>
He took one last glance at the burn victim before turning and setting off once more towards the tour group.
J’Ffrane gave an approving nod as he walked away, leaning towards Kate and whispering.
<“He’s come so far... Half a cycle ago, he likely would have been nearly catatonic for the rest of the day.”>
Despite the encouraging words, Kate’s shoulders fell as she started walking after Y’ggdrasog.
“I should have thought of this... There have to be thousands- no, tens of thousands, maybe even
six figures worth of burn victims from the bombs, in these two cities alone!”
<“And we will be with him to hold out a limb to grasp when he needs it. Just as he and I will be there for you, and you two for I, should the need arise.”>
Kate looked up at J’Ffrane, surprised.
“How would we help you?”
J’Ffrane smiled down at her.
<“You already have.
Every person who asks for my assistance helps me immensely just by doing so. It helps me remember that I have a place in the world, and that place is giving the help they so desperately need. …Now then, let’s catch back up to the crowd and find out how we can best do that here, hm?”>
And with that, J’Ffrane’s dissipated as they flew forward towards Y’ggdrasog and the rest of the group trailing along behind Migtryl.
“Hey, wait up!”
——
Despite the brief interruption, Kate hadn’t missed much by the time she caught back up, and she was soon learning more and more of the facilities and service centers the Collective had constructed around the fort.
While the local military stationed in the fort were (rather fittingly) occupying the fort’s centuries-old barracks, they were actually the main supplier of the vast majority of the tents around the compound.
“More tents are being constructed every day for use in the surrounding area,” said Jack. “We ran our own supply of military-grade tents dry a few days ago, but we’ve been able to scavenge more from places like camping supply stores, alongside manufacturing our own from tarps and the like. Not exactly comfortable to live in, but we have to take what we can get.”
Kate put her good hand up to ask a question, shivering a bit as she did so in the crisp, late-autumn air.
“How well do they retain heat in all this cold?”
“A very good question. Normally it would be quite the problem, doubly so given just how damned cold Minnesota can get in fall weather alone. Luckily, however, the Collective came up with a solution. …Migtryl?”
<“We used a few of the fabricators we have at our disposal to create personal solar-powered heating units to heat each tent. …It’s a bit inefficient given the cloud cover, but on even the cloudiest of days they’re able to achieve over 150% of the solar exposure needed to get a full, week-long charge in a matter of hours.”>
Jack chimed in with a smile.
“It certainly beats the bonfires we filled with whatever we could lay our hands on to burn before you all got here, that’s for sure!”
From there, they moved on to the camp’s utilities.
As the water purification plants of the area had been rendered mostly inoperable by the EMPs and cyberwarfare attacks, the Collective had repurposed a few industrial sump pumps to direct water from the Mississippi River into an assimilator system. The assimilator broke it down and removed all the pollutants in the river water until all that remained was potable water, and distributed to locals to drink-
<“…or at least, to those who don’t refuse to drink it, that is.”> Migtryl said.
An alien of a species Kate didn’t recognize (one that almost resembled a snake if not for their arms and upright stature, who was strapped to a mechanical walker to get around the terrain) piped up, beating her to the punch.
<“Why
wouldn’t they drink it?”>
Migtryl paused, glancing at Jack and weighing their words carefully before speaking.
<“…A small, but nonetheless
very vocal portion of the local population seem to be under the mistaken impression we’re putting chemicals, nanites and so on in the water to do things such as influence their actions, up to and including controlling their sexuality, for some reason. …Anyway, such people often choose to simply boil and drink water taken directly from the river itself, instead of taking the purified water rations we offer.”>
In contrast to the shocked and horrified reactions of the aliens around her, Kate merely sighed and rolled her eyes.
Yeah, that sounds about right… Another alien, this time a kentzaré, timidly raised one of their manipulation tendrils.
<“...Have many people gotten sick from doing that?”>
<“Unfortunately, yes. Even boiling the water sometimes wasn’t enough to prevent many such individuals from developing symptoms of several waterborne-based diseases, and that’s not even going into the possible long-term effects of the various pollutants in the water.
We also have individuals here and there who even refuse the fallout-proof masks we offer. …Something about “not using them before, not using them now” and “not living in fear”…?”>
As Kate facepalmed hard enough to leave a handprint mark on her forehead for a minute or two, Migtryl shook his head in frustration.
<“…We must make an effort to always remember that the majority of these people are hurt, scared, and in all likelihood grieving the death of at least one loved one, friend, or what have you. Most do not trust us. We must simply be patient with them, help those willing to receive it, and not give those who are unwilling any further cause for suspicion or hostility. …Now, come along; we have much more to look at.”>
With that, they both turned and began walking towards a long but narrow stone building. As they reached it, Jack turned to the group.
“This is the commissary. It’s where we keep the supplies we distribute to the civilians. It may look small, but looks can be deceiving. …C’mon, let’s step inside. Just remember to dust yourself off first!”
Y’ggdrasog glanced at the door clearly made for human proportions and shook his head, sighing as he turned to Kate.
<“You two go on ahead. I have no desire to work out the kink in my back later from having to be hunched over inside.”>
Kate smiled in amusement as several other taller species of aliens nodded, muttered their agreement and so on.
“Well, sorry on behalf of humanity for us being so short. …Anyway, see you in a bit, Yiggy!”
He winced.
<“…Kate, please, not in front of others…”>
Kate’s smile only widened as she turned and followed J’Ffrane with the rest of the group as they entered the building.
As they descended a set of stairs, Kate was surprised to see that despite its outer appearances, the building went several stories underground. As she descended down the first flight of stairs, a feeling of unease began to eat away at her. Her hairs began to stand on end, goosebumps rising despite the heaters inside the building.
Jack continued his explanation as they continued descending.
“The ground where this building stands was where they initially quarried out a lot of the stone necessary for building the majority of the fort’s walls and buildings back in the 1800’s. When they finished, the line of thinking was “well, we’ve made a really big hole, may as well use it for something.” So they built this commissary to act as a mega-cellar of sorts; it could store enough food to last the initial inhabitants of the fort an entire year.”
As they descended to the final level, Kate looked out across a sizable collection of boxes of various shapes and sizes stacked upon pallets. As she gazed at them, an eerie feeling of familiarity and something being inexplicably, terribly
wrong settled onto her, and she only barely heard Jack continuing to speak.
“Most of the supplies that don’t belong to anyone in particular are either stored here, or wherever we can stuff them in what little free space there is left in the other buildings of the fort. Groups go out every day to scavenge for more food, general supplies, raw materials to put into your “assimilators” to make things like our filtered masks-“
150 spare air filters- <“-as the assimilators and fabricators can only do so much at one time, we scavenge as much food as possible due to most of their time being taken up purifying the polluted water-“>
75 spare half-year water filters- “It’s important to keep track of everything else we store here, so a lot of the work is just tallying everything up. It’s tedious, but very important; we need to know what we have to give those with very specific dietary needs-“
500 cans of spinach, 300 cans of olives, 700 cans of baked beans- “Members of our species still have occasional issues with allergies, diabetes, that sort of thing. I’m told we likely will continue to have those for at least a decade or so before you Collective folks can develop those “immunity implants” necessary to sort them out. …Assuming the average Joe is willing to work with them, when the most advanced tech they had before was-“
3 spare radios, 50 packs of AAA batteries- Kate only just barely managed to drag herself back to the present as she felt J’Ffrane metallic hand gently tugging at her sleeve. She turned to see them wordlessly gazing at her, a concerned expression on their face. Only after their intervention did she notice she had begun to start breathing erratically as Migtryl kept talking.
<“…Beyond moving the supplies where they need to go, the job’s not very physical. For the most part, it’s just counting how much of any one item we have and writing down the results. We usually give the job to people who are injured or otherwise not at their best, but still want to contribute.”>
Migtryl glanced over at Kate, who unbeknownst to him was having a desperate internal struggle to try and keep herself calm.
<“You’d be a perfect fit here, heh!”>
Kate sunk into herself a bit at his words, and found herself wishing she could turn invisible as the group turned to stare at her. Her voice was barely audible as she felt obligated to murmur out a response.
“…I, uh-
pant …d-don’t think that-
pant …would be a good idea…”
Not again, not again… Just stay cool, don’t keep hyperventilating, just move on, just- stop it. Stop stop STOP oh god why can’t I just breathe normally?! Just k-keep cool, just- OH DON’T YOU START CRYING YOU WORTHLESS BI- She felt the touch of J’Ffrane’s metallic hand on her shoulder, bringing her back to herself.
<“Come on, Stardust; let’s take a walk.”>
Kate hesitantly nodded and let herself be led away from the group and up the stairs by J’Ffrane’s gentle leading hand, wiping her tears away as she went. Migtryl glanced at Jack, who was staring after the pair, his expression worried.
<“…Was it something I said?”>
