If you are solving a DE system with Runge-Kutta or any other solver and you know the solution is periodic (a closed orbit), is there some way to take advantage of that fact, to use the known endpoint to make sure the trajectory goes EXACTLY through the start point? Basically I'm worried that using any ODE solver, there's a possibility of drift from the exact solution over time due to accumulated errors.
I'm writing a code to solve for position vs time for arbitrary orbits. Right now I'm using the approximation that the central body, e.g. the sun, does not move. Eventually I'll do the exact Newtonian 2-body problem (both bodies orbit the center of mass, orbits still closed) and then extend to general n-body (no longer closed in general).
Don't tell me to Google for an orbit-solving code, I know there are lots of codes solving this problem. This is brain exercise. I'm a retired guy and just doing this for fun to keep my brain from rotting.
What's irritating is that I know that on the job 30 years ago I did something very like this, and I'm pretty sure I had some clever solution to this issue. If so, I no longer remember it. That code also worked out satellite tracks and footprints on the earth's surface. It was pretty cool when I got it working.
What I'm thinking right now is something like:

• estimate the period to figure out an appropriate Δt
• Use R-K to generate points starting from the initial conditions until the orbit overlaps the starting point.
• Use interpolation to find the exact period if different from the estimate and adjust Δt accordingly to make an integer number of samples.
• Run R-K backward from the endpoint back to the start point.
• Merge the forward and backward orbits to get my best estimate of the exact orbit.

Of course when I go to n-body, orbits are no longer closed anyway so maybe I should just accept the forward solution and not worry about accumulated errors. But I'd still like to know if there's an answer to my question.

[ESP] Este es mi primer post en reddit, lo intentaré detallar lo más posible.
Anoche, sobre las 3:10 a.m. (CEST) en Sevilla capital, estaba intentando dormir pero aún estaba completamente despierta. Ahí empecé a sentir como si la cama se agitara horizontalmente, como un meneillo ligero (lo suficientemente notorio como para asustarme) pero estable que duró como 10 segundos y fue aminorando hasta parar. Lo sentí como cuando estás en una cama de agua o una colchoneta de estas de saltar y alguien se sienta en una esquina. Al poco de empezar me incorporé y me senté pensando que estaba soñando con intención de espabilarme pero siguió. Sin gafas no veo un mojón así que no pude ver bien si la lámpara o la ventana se estaban moviendo, además estaba un poco cagada y tampoco pensé en eso, no sabía muy bien qué hacer. Poco después escuché un sonido como de trueno/avión fuera, lo que tiene sentido porque poco después empezó a llover bastante. La cuestión es que le he preguntado a mi familia y mis amigos pero nadie notó nada (ni siquiera los que estaban despiertos a esa hora) salvo: una amiga que se despertó a esa hora de repente y un amigo que sobre las 00:10 (CEST) notó lo mismo en Alicante, pero él estaba de pie (mismo tipo de temblor, misma duración...).
Según he mirado, sobre las 02:50 se detectó un pequeño temblor al oeste de Málaga, pero el IGN no lo ha registrado siquiera. Mi pregunta es, ¿alguien también notó algo?
[ENG] This is my first reddit post, so I'll try to be as detailed as possible.
Last night, about 03:10 a. m. (CEST) in central Seville, Spain, I was trying to get some sleep, but was still fully awake. I started to sense as is my bed was shaking horizontally, it was a light but consistent shake that lasted for up to 10 seconds and then it slowly decreased until stopping. The feeling was kind of similar as being someone sitting in the water bed you're at. In the middle of it, confused, I sat on the bed but I didn't manage to get up or try to see if other things, as lamps, were also moving as I wasn't wearing my glasses. A bit later, I heard something outside, kind of like a consistent thunder or a plane but shorter. That being a thunder makes sense since a couple hours later it started raining profusely. I have asked my family and friends and none of them felt anything except for a friend of mine who woke up at around that time (but felt nothing) and a friend of mine who was standing around 00:00 a. m. (CEST) and felt the same thing in Alicante, Spain, but he was standing instead.
There has been detected a small tremor in Málaga at around 2:50 a.m. (CEST), but it has not been registered by the Spanish National Geographic Institute. My question is: did you feel something?
