So here it goes. Why does everyone act like the continental hinge that exists at the shore-side border of Virginia and North Carolina isn't there? Please, for the love of God, you have to know what I'm talking about. I'm sure there's at least ONE, at LEAST ONE of you who's watched that thing swing open for a few minutes and swallow a smorgasbord of trees, street lamps, street signs, wild animals, or God forbid, a car full of people whole only to close up just as quickly.
I swear I'm going to lose my mind if the responses in this thread act like I'm speaking gibberish again. The hinge, it's located at the apex of where North Carolina and Virginia meet the Atlantic sea as I said, and from that pivot point the split in the continent it causes runs along the NC/VA state line down the NC/TN border eventually ending up at the frontier between Louisiana and Texas. I've made a crude map of it that I pinned to the top of my timeline, so none of you should have any excuse this time to pretend like you don't know what I'm talking about.
I'm no geologist or anything, but this has at least been going on since 98 given that's the first time I remember it happening. It doesn't seem to happen at any sort of regular, predictable interval so I'm wondering if tectonic plates don't relate to what's going on here??? No clue. If you are a geologist yourself, please, I'm begging you chime in. What's been causing this? Do any of you like... ever talk about what's going on? What to do about it? Anything??? Is the government going to do anything? The scientific community? Literally anyone? I'm sorry if I sound desperate I just don't understand why a lot of people I've brought this up to pretend like they've never heard of it or (and this is actually the most common response) just shrug it off like it's not somehow a big deal that a vast chunk of the continent swings out wildly on a hinge into the ocean every now and then, throwing everything laying along its boundary into a dark murky abyss of black water never to be seen again.
This isn't a problem to people? Maybe I'm bitter, or screw it. I am bitter. I am very bitter that everyone has ignored this. I've been bitter since I first learned about this thing when my dog fell into the abyss it created all those years ago. I've gotten bitterer since I've seen people driving right in front of me on the highway get swallowed up because of it. I've grown irate watching all the construction work being done (at least where I am) just to repair the damage to the roads its caused over and over again, only for the people working on it to be seemingly oblivious to what caused it. And worst of all, I've grown paranoid, freaked out, and mentally scarred since the very last time the hinge swung the lower southeast out into the ocean.
That was about a month ago. There's no way none of you don't remember that. There was a blackout and after that an internet outage where I was and everything. The area of North Carolina I live in, we've had a small homeless encampment problem in our rinky dink downtown for about two years now. And then suddenly around the time April rolled over to May, we didn't. I mean I'm sure a lot of you have heard of cities busing the homeless to other cities or locales before, but... Let me just say, in regards to what I ran into and watched happen last month driving down the rural back roads outside of civilization when this last swing happened, I know now that there are indeed people who know damn well that the hinge is there. They know enough to bus all of our town's homeless population to where the continent splits open and wait long enough for it to happen in order to... I think you catch my drift. What I'm still completely thrown by is the fact that the people hired by the city seem to know enough about it to reliably predict when it will occur.
That's why I'd appreciate a geologist's input, or anyone's really. Please for the love of God, tell me you at least know what I'm talking about so I can stop rambling.

This happened today: A car ploughed into a bus stop. Several people were hit and one died.
Now perhaps this was a totally unforeseeable mechanical failure. But I doubt it, and the police want witnesses so they doubt it too.
I'm posting the edited story below to highlight the equivocal language that accepts these 'accidents' as inexplicable freaks of nature and not avoidable tragedies: all part of the 'Nothing could have been done to avoid this' narrative & 'the price we pay to have cars'.
Tbh I'm slightly surprised it made the news at all. Needless to say this all makes me sad, depressed and irate that it's discussed in this 'a car was found to be in collision with three people' way.

A man in his 60s has died after a car collided with several people waiting at a bus stop in north London. Police and paramedics rushed .... to reports of a car crash. We had some people over the night for dinner. My boyfriend was looking thru board games. My ouija board isn’t in a box cause I lost the box when we moved. It was left out in the living room by accident with the damn planchette on top of it. I just noticed and put it back away right. I was wondering why it felt so heavy in the living room, and I’ve seen a white mist a few times out the corner of my eye while cooking tonight. I’m not really scared of this stuff. Hi. I'm located in US, NC if that matters. I was in an at fault accident in Oct, 2022 and my insurance sent me to a specific body shop. I got my car back in Jan, after paying my $500 deductible and $1,400 in rental car fees after the 30 days my insurance covered. The head unit (screen for backup camera, radio, etc) was not fixed, along with some alignment and steering issues. They let me drive my car for about a week until they could get an appointment with the Subaru dealership to fix the screen and they said they would fix the other things. Said it would be a couple of days. At this point they picked up the rental car fees. March, I get my car back. The AC isn't working. The AC was working when I dropped it off... Took it to a 3rd party inspector, a multitude of things were wrong. Rusted weld points, no coolant in the car, the radiator hose wasn't attached (WTF?!?). I was put in contact with the regional VP, sent to one of their "good" locations. Assured everything is double and triple checked and my car is ready today. I pick it up, looks good, make it 2 miles and get the indication it is overheating. Pull over and call the guy and he had it towed to the Subaru dealership and they are taking it from there. At this point I want to wash my hands of it and get paid out for the car. Do I have any legal recourse? I will be contacting the inspector for advice as well as my insurance (USAA) to make them aware. Any other actions I can take?

Fanning exemplified exactly how I felt and looked after she died. The just, utter shock of the whole scene, I mean, that’s life.
Accidents happen, and it’s so random. And wild. And can happen in a heartbeat.
It took several episodes to accept that he was gone. I’ve sat with that moment all day, that one split second when he falls into the ice and everything changes. That feeling Catherine had of, “No” “this isn’t real” “that’s not what happened” it perfectly encapsulates grief in that moment.
And Grigor!!! The inability to stop the grief, the overwhelming sobbing that comes from a memory.
In the absurdity of life, I’ve never seen grief and sudden loss portrayed as accurately as this ridiculous show has.

Are you allowed to put a space with an assembly occupation classification on the fourth level of a wood-framed multi family building? Think of a small club room for residents, accessed only internally via stair and elevator, and around 1600 square feet. I’ve always seen these run as accessory to residential as long as the area in question is less than 10% of the overall floor’s footprint, but I have an architect telling me it has to be run as assembly. Help, code nerds! This doesn’t seem right.

Hi, I've recently been put in a position where I/my family can afford top surgery and as I've only had 1 surgery before when I was very little, I don't know how to go about finding a surgeon. I have two questions

1. Those who have had surgery, how did you go about picking a surgeon? For context, I have no prefered surgery type, I am okay with scaring as long as outcomes are safe.
2. I live in a town very close to Charlotte, NC and would like to know of any surgeons In the general area. I am able to travel to other states so I'm open to hearing about surgeons in nearby states.

Any advice is appreciated, I have no idea how to navigate starting this process.

Ok, so I've come up with two different aus for the owl house that I like, but I don't know how to write because my knowledge of the worlds they take place in is limited. This is the first one.
TLDR: Halo Owl House au up for adoption.
(Halo AU) (Cannon designs and aged-up designs)
Summary: It takes place during and after the war with the Covenant. In the beginning, Luz is living with Eda an old friend of her dead parents. Eda is a Sargent for the UNSC and one of the members of the ORION I project that actually benefitted from the augmentations (Extra strength, speed, and recovery). She has been training and taking care of and teaching Luz how to survive since she was little. Eda is eventually called back to help fight the Covenant leaving Luz home alone. Luz only has her bullies at school (and possibly king depending on who he is in this story). One day Luz discovers what her dad was working on and she learns he was studying ancient technology and culture on this planet from an old alien race called the Forerunners. Just after she learns this alarms go off and the Covenant are invading the planet. Luz downloads all the data to a flash drive and destroys the rest, hoping to make it off the planet alive. However, she is caught by elites and is about to die when suddenly two Spartans save her. Their numbers are 095 and 027. They are here to retrieve the data her father had collected and keep it out of the Covenant's hands. The male spartan (027, who is Hunter) Got a call and a request for backup so he left spartan 095 to escort Luz to the nearest transport off-world and she's not exactly thrilled to be escorting a civilian when she could be doing more. Luz feels nervous around the giant armored soldier as they make their way toward the city. However, to their dismay, they find the city in ruin and all transports destroyed. To escape this doomed world Luz and the Spartan must travel miles across covenant-controlled territory with no communications just to reach the rendevous coordinates. After a few close calls, they have to settle down for the night. The Spartan received damage to their helmet and Luz offers to fix it. 095 takes off her helmet and Luz is surprised that the woman behind the helmet is the same age as her (15). She gets a name from her. Amity is her name. As they continue onward despite the danger Amity comes to enjoy hearing Luz's rambles even if she doesn't respond to them and has to tell her to be quiet when enemies are near. eventually after days they reach the rendevous point where they escape the planet and retreat. Luz gives Amity a Hecate key chain and some copies of her Good Witch Azura books as thanks. After Luz leaves Amity swears she won't read them, but quickly begins reading and rereading the books and keeping the keychain. Luz's experience inspires her to join the fight against their covenant. When she grows older she joins the ODST's and becomes one of the best. She still doesn't have friends though since she now idolizes spartans which makes her unpopular with her squad and other ODSTs. The only reason they don't kick her off the team is because she is the best of all of them in combat (Eda's trained her well) and if their team leader Boscha can't lead at the moment then she's the next best replacement even if outside of combat the team would rather listen to grunts banter then Luz talk about Azura or Spartans. They tell her if she likes the freaks so much she should bother them instead, and that's how she meets Willow and Gus and meets Amity and Hunter again years later.

Other character info:
King-I can't decide if I want King to be an AI companion for Luz because that would limit his life span to 7 years, or a grunt that Eda found before the war and raised. (his dad would have been the leader of the grunt rebellion and sent his infant child away in a cryo pod when all hope was lost and Eda found and raised him).
Rain-Captain of the Hexside after Bump (was killed or retired) has a crush on their ex Eda. Broke up because Eda wouldn't talk to them about some of the difficulties she deals with after ORION I.
Eda-One of the best Sargents. A good friend of Sargent Johnson. Is a blushing mess around the captain. Gives dating, flirting, and seduction, advice to Amity when she realizes she has a crush on Luz and explains to her that what she is feeling is love. Eda also threatens everyone on the ship to not tell ONI anything about her and Rain or any other relationships ONI might not like.
Lilith-ship's scientist, sister to Eda, a real nerd, and good friends with Hooty. (I haven't decided what Hooty should be yet). Also helps Amity with her Luz problem more than Eda sometimes.
Willow- a Spartan III that joined at age 11. Leads Gus, Hunter, and Amity (I can't decide if their team should be called Purple team, Gold team, or Titan team) and looks out for them. Before she was team leader she was a head hunter with Gus. They were the best of the best. survived all their suicide missions. Amity's best friend.
Gus- another Spartan III that joined at age 9. He is obsessed with the Forerunners and what is the current state of human pop culture. When he meets Luz, he and Willow are a lot more open and friendlier with her at the start than Hunter and Amity and they become friends fast. Willow and Hunter's best friend.
Amity- unlike the other Spartan II's Amity was given to ONI by her mother without the knowledge of Alador, Edric, or Emira and told she died in an accident. She and Hunter did not survive their augmentations, (similar to red team) but their bodies were kept to be revived and successfully augmented a few years later. After Luz gave her Good Witch Azura it quickly became Amity's favorite book series. If she's not on a mission or training then she's hiding somewhere, reading Good Witch Azura. When she meets Luz as an adult she at first pays her no mind, but as they start seeing each other more often in combat and in the ship Amity starts to feel something she doesn't understand. It takes her months (close to a year maybe) to realize that she is experiencing what people call a crush. (Amity is a lot better at hiding it and her emotions in this au. Her teammates only notice the slight changes in her demeanor that tell them she's crushing on Luz. To everyone else things are normal). She doesn't want to be in love because she perceives that as a distraction and weakness, and that Luz deserves someone better. After a bunch of convincing that she should go for it and that Luz likes her back, they start dating and Amity starts to become happier (even though she still has a hard time showing her emotions), but now she's very protective of Luz and is scared of anything happening to her. If you're an ally she will die for you, if you're a superior she'll obey you, if you're Luz she will love you forever and die for her, if you're a threat God help you, but if she thinks you're a threat to Luz? Don't even bother praying to any God for help. She also listens to Luz talk about Good Witch Azura a lot because she loves listening to her.
Hunter- is another Spartan II and Amity's oldest friend. He was revived for augmentation two years before Amity was so there is a two-year age gap between the two now. Hunter is the last Spartan to be befriended by Luz. Like Amity he believes he must not show weakness and he isn't good with emotions. He also isn't really supportive of Amity dating Luz but keeps quiet because she seems genuinely happy with her. Also unknown to him, his uncle is the head ONI. Also, I am trying to think of a possible way for Huntlow to happen, but it's a lot harder than I thought, if I come up with one I will update, or someone else can come up with Huntlow ideas.
Belos- the head of ONI. He kidnapped his nephew to be used in the Spartan II program. When his brother Caleb and his sister-in-law Evelyn found out he had them killed so as to not reveal the Spartan II program to the public. He will pull any strings to ensure he gets what he wants. (He's not the main villain of this story. That's reserved for the Covenant, the Flood, and possibly the Banished, but he is definitely a devious and dangerous secondary villain).
Luz- is the girlfriend to the most awesome girlfriend Amity and one of the bests ODSTs in the UNSC. She has survived many battles over the years and has grown close to the four Spartans who are now her only friends. They've survived almost everything, from Reach, Alpha Halo, the Flood, the invasion of Earth, to the Ark. However during one battle she sustains an injury and losses everything below her left kneecap. She now has to use crutches everywhere (or have Amity embarrassingly insist on carrying her everywhere because it's "faster and she weighs nothing to her and it's definitely not because Amity loves to carry her and how embarrassed she gets").
From there, I have two options for Luz to go depending on the writer. She can either stay one-legged or she can apply to become a Spartan IV. Also, I have two ways Luz becomes a Spartan IV. 1. She tells her friends what she has chosen to do and that she will get a prosthetic leg if she joins the program, and while they're worried they support her through her training and augmentations. (Amity and Hunter are a bit afraid she will suffer augmentation failure as they did.) 2. An accident happens, leading all of her friends and family to believe she is dead, while she was really saved last minute and is being trained and surprises everyone with her return as a Spartan IV. (This path will lead to trauma and unhealthy coping from Wilow, Gus, Amity, and Hunter though and they will suffer emotionally from the loss, especially Amity). Also, Luz's Spartan helmet will have cat ears it's not up for debate but the cat ears won't be for decoration they will serve a purpose. Luz installed them to her where enemies are, eavesdropped on enemies, and use a sort of echolocation. Oh yeah and also Luz would be a much better Spartan IV than the other IVs because she’s spent time around actual Spartans and knows how to act, but she will still retain her signature Luz Noceda charm, but she will be one of the IVs that’s closer to being a Spartan.
I am putting this up for adoption because my knowledge of Halo is only from videos of people playing the game (I have never owned an Xbox or played Halo) and the random Halo lore youtube video. Sorry for the really long post, I hope was understandable and there weren't too many spelling errors. Hopefully, this will be enough for someone who has better knowledge of Halo to make a good Halo x The Owl House fanfic. So, my nmom caused an accident in her car. She has broken both legs and has spine issues and can't bear weight on her legs for three months. She's been in the nursing home/rehab center for 3 weeks so far, and is expected to be there at least 4-5 months total. Let me just list a few of my experiences so far:

1. She has gotten so angry because I pointed out that the car accident was her fault (she made a left across oncoming traffic and pulled out in front of a guy who had no time to stop). She became so full of narc rage that she spent the first week trying to convince me it wasn't her fault every single time we talked. The guy should have stopped for her, she said!
2. Supposedly they have not been allowing her water at the rehab center. She's only getting 21 milligrams of water a day, according to her. When I investigated, I found out that she's getting her eight eight ounce glasses of water a day. She's fine. When I visited, she had 24-32 ounces of drinks on her tray table.
3. She claimed that they had only been feeding her corned beef hash for breakfast, lunch and dinner at the nursing home. Upon further investigation, I asked "So you're only getting corned beef hash for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Are you SURE?" "YES," she says. I tell her I'm going to call the nursing home and look into this. Then she admits, "well, I've had chicken and rice. And hamburgers...and vegetables." Umm...ok.
4. I sent her a care package with not only personal care items, but a book of word searches, a diary, and pencils. The first thing she says is "Did you send me a bowl? So I can soak my fingernails?" Ummm, no! I didn't think of your bizarre request for a bowl to soak your fingernails in. Then she complains about the crappy pencils I bought her (mechanical pencils...she didn't know how to work a mechanical pencil!). Then she wanted a waterbottle that she can hide from the nurse! This care package cost 70 dollars and 20 dollars to mail to her (I live more than several hours away). I get one throwaway thanks and then so many complaints!!
5. So many complaints about the poor nurses and staff that aren't treating her well.
6. The doctor doesn't come to check on her. EVER.
7. They won't plug in her phone for her every time it gets pulled out of the wall.

This is going to be a ride. I was VLC when this whole thing started. I'm ready to go NC already.

you know my favorite Marvel What If comic is #19 of the original run. it's a story that tells what if Peter Parker with his Spider-Man persona hadn't become a crime fighter but continued wrestling and he clicked to become prominent and famous. that's actually quite interesting to really see the contrast that Peter went through. I mean have you seen him in amazing fantasy 15? I mean really he's really there after the bite her in the direction I want to show it the schoolyard bullies, and quite immature on top of that, only that with his uncle gave him some self-reflection that he shouldn't use his powers for himself. and as I said it's fascinating to see what would have happened if he hadn't gotten that self-reflection, as it's also really interesting to see that he's acting quite childish there too. and I think that's one thing that I find kind of fascinating that you have a person who has kind of toxic streaks but yet you've fought them to become a better person.
and I think that's just one of the things that many unfortunately still have in their heads, that people with their bad qualities always act actively and consciously. but often it's just that many don't check it or don't want to check it, that they also say, think and act quite questionable things.
and I think the best comic that sort of dissects that thinking is Scott Pilgrim vs the world. and I have to talk about the differences between the film and I know what it's like to criticize this film even if I'm right that the comic clearly goes further. and best embodied with technically one of my favorite evil ex Lucas Lee. Anyone who only knows the movies knows he threw Scott into a clock tower (where the universe says he probably deserved it) and that he beat himself because he's not good at grinds. in the comic version it's a bit more complicated. basically it's a whole deconstruction on the nerd vs jock trope. because after Lukas Scott gave a crash course in architecture, they took a break. the two of them sitting on a bench and suddenly starting to get a conversation. and then slowly dissolves then on the masks and the roles that play. I mean you really get the feeling in another timeline maybe they could have even been friends. I mean heck, the way it happened with the self knockout with the skateboard wasn't a trick, scott just wanted to be nice because Lukas himself was an avid skater but hasn't done it in years. and in general it is treated more like a victory in history that he didn't even deserve. That's generally the problem I have with the film, that I don't think it really goes into it any more deeply, the construction of the cliché from loser to winner. precisely because a lot of elements also fall out about Scott, e.g. the whole thing with Kim, or is it actually his own fault that the relationship with Envy is a fiasco and that she even tells him to his face that he is emotional packages on others, oh yeah and the whole Lisa thing that was completely cut from the movie where he beat up someone who was flirting with her even though they weren't in a romantic relationship.
and while you're talking about people who lack self-reflection at a dangerous level, let's get to joe hill the cape. the story revolves around Eric who got into a pretty bad accident when he was eight years old while playing superheroes with his brother, the thing is he claimed the cape he was wearing really made him fly. but of course his mother and brother didn't really believe in it at first. Years went by somehow he's so common some are successful like Erik's brother and others are just like Erik. and at the very end he suddenly finds in his mother's basement the cape that she actually locked away for years after his accident. and lo and behold it was no imagination that he could fly with it. and with that power, one thing had decided to take revenge and killed his ex. then you know that's kind of like a horror story that's particularly mienna, why? because I was in a situation like Eric myself, I looked at myself like a loser out of nothing and was just jealous as well as almost everyone, I mean heck I can even draw a parallel to it because Erik's brother Nick is studying and Unfortunately, he doesn't have the opportunity to do so, which is also the case with me. The thing is I've managed to sort of outgrow it and even now have a pretty solid relationship with my brother, I mean he lives in my apartment and takes care of my cat when I have to go to the vocational training center. and that's exactly what I want to see more of, where you can really ask yourself hey isn't the badguy somehow me? you already know the fear of a thing you can be. because the thing is Erik never got away from his accident and the loss of his cancer, he only defined himself with it you can almost say it's a gimmick and if you just limit yourself with it as a person clearly he doesn't have much space to grow. it's just really fitting about the capture boxes spoken by Nick that he says that back when he was always playing with his brother Erik he was the villain because there always had to be one for Erik. and that's something I just can't outgrow, someone must be to blame for his misery. he has a victim mentality that he mostly uses to justify his shit and that's a thing you often see in nerds trying to cover up for their toxic behavior.
but what if i realize my toxic properties early on? Well, I have to say that starting early is important, but it doesn't mean that you haven't caused any damage that you have to live with. Sentinel was one of the titles that was part of the Mavel Next imprint, and my god it came out 20 years ago but it feels more modern than you think. Basically it's about Justin, a normal loose high schooler in the middle states who lives in his father's junkyard with his brother. and then he finds the remains of one of the eponymous giant robots from the Marvel Universe, which he begins to repair out of curiosity. and it's actually interesting because you really dig into the psyche of someone who has to realize they're not perfect, and believe me youngsters always have a hard time with that. I mean if you really really love this comic you really feel like you are actually reading something about a normal teenager struggling with his status and schoolyard bully. and then he cries himself out the giant robot that repairs after.The two most important points of the first Story Ark is, I don't think anyone knows something that makes this comic somehow so modern. in the story, justin develops a friendship with a girl who sees this relationship as just a friendship and he almost destroyed her for telling around he had sex with her, proving people a technic don't have a plan of people. oh yes, and that he uses the completed Sentinel to make himself look like a hero. he ordered the giant robot to pretend to attack the high school and he then hit his metal friend in the shin with a car and then he disappeared because of it. the thing is just like that justin doesn't really feel like a hero just because of that, i mean you traumatized a town and the guy that has been tormenting you most of the time is now technically in a mental hospital for the trauma, yeah no wonder you doesn't feel like a real hero if none of this is true or deserved. and I don't want to spoiler about it on how it goes because that's when it starts out like he's really really trying to do good and be a hero but like I said the damage is done and you have to live with him now. It works I think because you just really get the feeling a lot of teenagers, if not yourself, would do shit like that because they just don't know any better. and then crashing full force against the wall called reality. the thing is, toxic properties are mostly in people and only become apparent when they're released or have room to grow. and realizing that you have them is always a painful experience when you have to admit to yourself things you don't want.
and these are three comics that I think do a pretty good job of picking apart toxic nerd behavior, or some form of it. the self righteousness. and if you don't get it wrong, that's actually very important and it's even a breeding ground for many things, I mean the three examples I mentioned there also act about guys who somehow also have a problem with women. although I have to say maybe a story in general that deals directly with sexism in nerd circles is also important.
but other things are also important, e.g. racism and homophobia. I mean have you ever been in a lobby of the popular multiplayer game? I mean the hatred to people of color or LBGTQ representation in works of art eho bach them ware normally heteronorm is terrifying. I mean from people who say I was bullied in the schoolyard because I liked XY, it's ironic when they start attacking others themselves. I mean just because you've experienced shit yourself doesn't mean you should inflict it on others.
but we can also pull out the Marxist lens and deconstruct the pro-capitalist side of some creeps. I mean, from guys demanding that something go bankrupt just because it has diversity in it, to people spreading anti-union sentiment in the entertainment industry. I mean heck we can even take apart the Tech Bro Utopia which is actually more of a dystopia of white sausage libertarian partying.
I mean heck, from all the bullshit I get from the Gamer™️ site you could make a mark Russell comic series about of it, that's how f******* some of them are missing selfsreflection.

i have a tattoo that slightly encroaches onto my neck, can see 1-2 inches of it in a tshirt. i’m in charlotte NC
