Got my x16 on Monday and I’ve had many problems. Some from Dell, some from Microsoft, and some self-inflicted. I’ll go into them and then get into observations about the laptop at the end.
Ordering / Hardware Troubles
The ordering process for my x16 experience was…less than ideal. Ordered on Feb 22nd, went in production on Feb 27th, completed on March 20th, shipped on March 23rd, received on March 27th (because Dell decided no signature but also no weekend delivery?).
It took 21 days to build and people who ordered theirs after me were getting theirs way before me so that should have tipped me off that something was wrong, and sure enough, it came with 3 things.
Windows / Self-Inflicted Pain
Since I got one of the first models, only one configuration was available at the time, and it only had a 1tb SSD so I decided to grab a 2tb drive and do a fresh Windows install. Well, when I tried to install Windows, it couldn’t find the hard drive. Took me an hour of mild panic to find that in the bios the storage was set to raid and not AHCI. I don’t know if it was this way for the SSD that came with the laptop or if the bios defaults to raid for new storage, but yeah, read this paragraph and save yourself some time. One interesting thing about doing a fresh install is that no drivers are loaded, which means no internet connection, which means you have to find a way around MS’ “Microsoft account required” step of the process. Nothing that a quick search can’t fix, but MS didn’t think that one through too well.
The rest of the install and driver loading went alright, except for the sound drivers. I guess they don’t take the first time (even when you restart twice) and you have to go through the process twice. With the drivers loaded I went about transferring all my files that I’ve built up from…15 years now? And…4 laptops? What I didn’t realize—and this is very important—was that the bulk of these files were located in my OneDrive folder, and I didn’t know this because it wasn’t a problem on my old computer, but Windows likes to automatically upload everything in that folder, and the contents are wayyyy past the free 5gb of storage. Now that wouldn’t have been that big a problem if you could tell OneDrive to stop it, and stop syncing that folder. Nope! Gotta wait till it’s done and THEN you can change those settings. So the storage would fill up, I would delete the uploaded files (which also deletes the local files—genius move on Microsoft’s part), storage fill up, rinse and repeat. SO…there was much more of this and problems like this over the span of three days, but in the interest of time and attention, I ended up resetting Windows and keeping my files—this fixed a lot of little problems I was running in to.
X16 Impressions
At the end of the day, do I like the laptop? Yes. Am I going to return it after I get my replacement? No, since the only other laptop that I was considering is the Razer Blade 16, and that is almost 1K over the price I paid for this one (15% discount).
Edit: I forgot to mention the speakers and Dolby Atmos. Speakers can get very loud, and are easily the best I've had on any laptop. Dolby Atmos and its effects on normal non-Atmos content are...interesting. The best way that I can describe its effects on this kind of content is that everything sounds separate and distinct. But...a side effect of this process is that because of everything's newfound "separateness", you can hear the "hollowness" in-between these individual elements. In other words, instead of a wall of full, "complete" sound, you get individual columns of it, and can audibly "see" the gaps between those columns. It could just be that I'm simply not used to it, and this is how real, serious sound is mastered and heard. I dunno, a matter of taste, I suppose. I'll try it out for a few more days turning it on and off and see how I feel.

- The laptop came with something seemingly in between the laminate and the lcd part of the screen.
- The metal on the outer bottom right corner was bent or dented.
- The chassis creaks on the right side (probably because of the dent).

X16 Impressions
- The screen is gorgeous. This resolution is fantastic and everything looks so crispy and sharp, colors are vibrant, and the color grading is on the warmer side. 16:10 is amazing and after spending some time with it 16:9 feels so cramped. However. I am coming from an m15r2, which has a 1080p screen that is on the cooler, blueish side of color. So, in other words, I can’t tell you that this screen is objectively better than any other screen—it’s just that it’s way better than my old one and I’m willing to bet that any screen from any laptop in this tier would blow me away just as much, if not more.
- The screen is not HDR. Alienware was very coy about what they revealed with their screen specs. They wouldn’t get into how bright it was, and they never explicitly said it was an HDR screen, only that it was a Dolby Vision screen. At the time, I did some cursory research and found that HDR is part of a requirement for Dolby Vision, so I thought that it was an HDR screen and everything was peachy. WRONG. The screen is only magically gifted HDR capabilities when playing Dolby Vision videos. Everything else—navigating Windows, playing games, whatever—is not HDR. Does this really matter? I don’t know—the screen is much more vibrant than my old one so things automatically look better, but I do remember bringing my PS4 Pro to a friends house who had an HDR tv and Ghost of Tsushima looked so much better on it that I felt as if I had been playing in black and white on my tv at home. So. Yeah. While the screen looks great, I do feel like I’ve been cheated a bit, and that I’ll have to wait another 3-4 years at a shot of getting a laptop with an HDR screen to see what I’ve been missing.
- The screen isn’t dim, but it isn’t bright. I work in an office with a lot of natural light when it’s actually sunny, or a lot of artificial light when it’s not. As I’m typing this it’s a combination of both and pretty bright in the office and I’m at 65% brightness. It’s fine, but I’m bitter about the lack of HDR and I suspect the nit-ceiling has something to do with it.
- Of note: I have noticed that screens appear darker the warmer they are and brighter the colder they are, so the perceived brightness and actual brightness/nits might be different.
- No, actually I’m really bitter about the screen, and if I knew they were coming out with a true HDR screen in a couple months I would’ve held out. But from what little knowledge on the subject that I’ve been able to glean from this board, Dell generally doesn’t update their screens mid-cycle, and if they do, it’s sporadic and can’t be easily predicted.
- The keyboard is loud. It feels great but oh, is it loud. I had wanted to try the mechanical Cherry keyboard ever since they came out with it so I’m glad I got it but man, I do feel kind of embarrassed making so much noise with it in the office. I should note that the “bad” part of the noise (the part I at least don’t like) isn’t from pressing the key down and activating the switch—that’s fine and it sounds satisfying—the bad part is when the key comes back to the starting point. It makes a sound a bit like a “ping”. On its own it’s fine, but when you’re typing a bunch of stuff the pings start to drone on and on and create a cacophony of pings and plinks, and since it's getting annoying for you, you start to wonder just how much every one else around you can take before they wrench it from your hands and gleefully chuck the machine out the window. So yeah, knowing what I know now, I would have preferred the membrane keyboard, but it wasn’t an option then and it still isn’t an option now so oh well I guess. No but seriously, Alienware has got the feel of the keyboard down and have returned lighting to the whole keyboard—the next frontier should be trying to dampen the key return sound.
- The fans are much quieter. The fans on my old m15r2 and many m-series whine at a high pitch—something that most, if not everyone on this forum are familiar with. The x16 fans—even under load—are more of a “whir” than a “whine” and even when they’re crankin’ they aren’t half as annoying as the m15r2’s.
- Why the silver? Maybe there was just too much staining with the white finish? The stains on both the outside and inside of my m15r2 are a big unsightly but the white looked so cool and I’m sad to see it go. But, if it must go, and we must get silvealuminum, then why oh why, did they leave the back fan cap white and not turn it black like the inside of the chassis? It looks really out of place and doesn’t make much sense.
- The inside black is a fingerprint magnet. Not much more needs to be said, other than get used to it. On a minor plus side, the finish looks hardy so I can probably use isopropanol wipes on it without worrying too much….right?
- New Command Center is…not great, at least in its current state as it relates to controlling the lighting. Personally, the only thing I ever used AWCC for was to control the lighting, and that’s where AWCC 6.0 really drops the ball. As far as I can tell, there is no way to quickly shut off the lighting. In 5.0 you could “Go Dark” quickly and easily. No such option here (They also removed the function key for this). I figured ok, I’ll just make a lightless profile and switch to that. Nope. In theory, you can make new profiles—and you even get a notification that you’ve successfully created and saved them!—but where can you switch to them? I’ve scoured the app and clicked every dropdown, button, and switch that I could find, but I CANNOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME find how to switch lighting profiles. In case you were wondering why this is important to me, my laptop is in my bedroom, and turning all the lighting off before bed is helpful for not being woken up by what seems like the Lights of God in the dead of night when Windows decides to do its 2am updates. So, if any of you know how to do this, please tell me.

I knew it was about time for my yearly review, so when Matt from HR waved me over as I got in, I had a nervous smile. All my coworkers told me how the factory always gave raises after a year, if you lasted that long, so I was hoping to hear how much it would be.
We walked towards the office section, chit chatting; how was your weekend, that kind of thing. We sat down and he pulled up a document on his laptop.
‘Sammy, you’re a great employee, and we’re glad you’ve stuck with us this year’ he started, going on to talk about how I was a good worker, always showed up on time, and really made a great impression on my department head.
I’d been a runner for a year now, and while it was a lot of wear and tear on my feet, but the pay and benefits for my position was worth it. The factory paid more than any place I had ever worked. Granted, they had some pretty crazy strict rules, but I always followed them to the letter! And I was always happy to help other departments out if they were short handed, most of them would buy you lunch if you did that.
Matt showed me the document, and went down the columns with me, and at the end, he offered me a choice. I had made a really good impression on the head of the maintenance department, Big Josh, and wanted to know if I would be interested in switching over. It would mean an extra $5 an hour, and an extra week of PTO. But, Matt cautioned, there were definitely sacrifices I would have to make to work there. But that extra money would make a real difference for me and my family. So I said yes, and Matt and I went to the Maintenance area. I was a mix of nervous and excited as we walked, imagining telling my brother the good news! Last year we had managed to save enough to move far away from our parents, and it was just us and our little doggo now. He still had trouble walking because his leg had been broken so badly, and it was hard for him to find work.
I walked in to Maintenance, and Big Josh had a big smile for me. He shook my hand and told me how happy he was that I was going to work with them. Big Josh was a real no nonsense guy, always gave it to everyone straight. So he sat me down and talked to me about the importance of Maintenance, how their department kept the whole factory working, because when machinery goes down, work stops, and we all suffer. So working there is a really big responsibility. I nodded at what he said very seriously. I remembered last year when the AR department had been down for an entire day and we had all been sent home. That short check had really hurt! The whole factory had been pissed because the rumor was someone had sabotaged the machines.
Now I did tell him that I don’t have a lot of experience working with machinery, just what me and my brother had done to keep our pos car running. But he shook his head and said that didn’t matter, that here at the factory we train in house anyways, so I’d be taught all I needed to know. What mattered was that I showed up and did my best, that as long as I was a hard worker and did what needed to be done, I’d always have a job there.
A Maintenance Technician job really was the holy grail of jobs, too. As long as you ‘kept your nose clean’ you were guaranteed a good job, with regular pay raises and full benefits. I knew some of their guys had worked here for decades, and old Bob had retired out of the department with full retirement benefits earlier in the year. Big Josh told me if I was willing to make some sacrifices I’d be set for life.
Big Josh just had me shadow him for the rest of the day as he went about his rounds. He did some paperwork, showing me what machines were due for maintenance today; and there was a whole schedule of which machines to work on and when. I always saw the MT’s working on different things, but I never realized how organized it was. He took me with him out to a busted conveyor belt, and had me hand him tools while he worked on fixing it. Skinny Mike, one of the newer MTs, flashed me a big thumbs up and grinned at me when we got back from that.
Big Josh let me go off to lunch after that and Skinny Mike took me over to the unofficial Maintenance Tech table. Everybody nodded at me, and Mike asked what I thought about my first day. ‘It was great’ I said. The other techs nodded back and started giving me advice, except for Paulie. He was a little hard of hearing on account of how he was missing an ear, so I think he didn’t hear what the others were saying, and he was pretty focused on his sandwich.
Short Mike told me to always pay attention to the machinery parts that were coated yellow, cause that meant they were tricky. Bald Mike told me that I should make sure and pay attention in Electrical Safety class, cause getting shocked is no joke! Stache Mike told me to really pay attention to the rules about the windows. I know he had had some problems with that earlier, there had been an incident in the parking lot that had made everybody late one day.
I asked everybody if they were happy in the Maintenance department, and everybody nodded at once. Even Paulie. Bald Mike said they had all made sacrifices to get where they were, but it was worth it. MTs were really respected at the factory, and it was a big honor to be asked to join. Short Mike said he hoped I was ready to work really hard, that it took blood, sweat and tears to be a MT. I said I would give it my all, and everybody laughed, except Paulie, who I figured didn’t hear me. Skinny Mike replied that hopefully that wouldn’t be needed. I was just glad they were all being so accepting. Having a good relationship with your coworkers could make work so much more bearable. And I knew from experience that having crappy coworkers could make work hell.
Skinny Mike walked back with me to continue shadowing Big Josh, but on the way back he said something kinda weird. He told me to really think about what I was willing to give up to learn the ropes, and that he wished he’d picked something different. I must have had a confused look on my face, because he slapped my back and told me not to worry about it. But I did. Was I missing something? But Big Josh told me Skinny Mike was just a joker, and that I would be getting my new uniform tomorrow.
When I got home and told my little brother about my big raise and promotion, he must have picked up on my unease. He asked me if I was sure about this. Said that he’d heard a lot of weird things about the factory, plus all the rules they made you follow were a little…intense. I had to admit, what Skinny Mike said was freaking me out a little. All the Maintenance Techs said they liked their jobs, but now I wondered. Maybe I should have stayed just a runner. Maybe I was overthinking it though. I got that anxiety thing sometimes. The way me and Artie grew up, you got used to expecting the other shoe to drop. But we’d only been scraping by so far. We’d been living in our pos car when we first got away from our folks. It took us months to save up for the crappy one bedroom apartment we were living in now. I had been real lucky to find this job in the first place. We even had savings now. The only thing I was really sure of was that we weren’t going back to Utah. There was nothing there for us. Anything was better than that.
That’s what I kept reminding myself as I went in to work the next day. Nothing that could ever happen at work could possibly be worse than what me and Artie had gotten away from. When I got in, Skinny Mike and Bald Mike smiled at me and waved me over. ‘Your uniform is ready!’ Bald Mike told me, ‘You ready to join the big boys? And, uh, girls, too’ he said with an awkward laugh. ‘We don’t discriminate! Please don’t tell HR I said that!’ I snorted, Bald Mike was really good at putting his foot in his mouth, but I didn’t mind. I knew he meant well. I also knew that Short Paulie would kick his butt if he really meant that. She was a badass, and didn’t take any of that crap. Short Paulie was our HR lady, and she was from New Jersey. Rumor was she really knew how to get rid of bodies.
I promised him I wouldn’t say nuthin’ as we headed up to Maintenance. He looked really grateful, and mimed wiping sweat off his forehead as Skinny Mike and I laughed. Big Josh looked real pleased as I got in, and handed me my new uniform. MTs all got to wear dark brown overalls over their regular clothes. Big Josh always joked that the color was great for hiding stains. He said I could put it on in the bathroom if that made me more comfortable, but then to come to the 2nd floor pump room when I was ready.
I’ll be honest, the uniform was a baggy sack, and didn’t really make anyone look good. But everybody respected the MTs, so I tried telling myself that it didn’t matter. What matters was having a good safe job, with coworkers who respected me, and that paid good. I psyched myself up in the mirror ‘You can do this!’ But I still had nervous cramps in my belly. Hopefully that would go away with time though. I was just worried about doing a good job, right?
I got to the pump room, and all the maintenance techs were there, huddled in a little circle, whispering. They all looked my way as I came in, which freaked me out a little. But I put on my game face; I was good at looking like everything was fine, when everything was, in fact, not fine at all.
Big Josh came out from behind the pump machine with a serious expression, and told Stache Mike to lock the door. OK, now I was freaking out a little more, why did they need to do that? No, no it’s fine, if I yelled someone would come to see what was up right? Except that the machines were all running on the factory floor, so probably nobody would hear. And the pump room door was a thick fire door, I remembered. Fuck.
Big Josh started talking, ‘Now we all know that being a Maintenance Technician is a big deal. A big responsibility. And it’s best to go forward with open eyes. Being a tech requires hard work, and of course, the Sacrifice.’
Wait, what?! What sacrifice? Am I about to get my throat slit? A million thoughts were going through my head at once as I was standing there frozen with a polite expression on my face. I was sure my undershirt was soaked through with sweat.
A couple of the MT’s starting chanting ‘Sacrifice! Sacrifice! Sacrifice!’ I laughed a little, nervously, but my feet were rooted to the spot. This is not how I want to die! Even good pay and good benefits are not worth this!!
Then Skinny Mike whacked the other Techs and told them to cut it out, in a loud whisper. Big Josh walked over to me and took me into the circle of techs in front of the big pump machine. He gave the chanting techs a hard look and continued, ‘Like I said, hard work and sacrifice. We want you to go into this with open eyes, so we always start with this part. And, if it’s too much, you can still change your mind, no hard feelings.’
Now I was confused and scared. So I laughed the fakest laugh ever and asked what he meant.
Everybody looked very serious now. Big Josh told me that the Factory was a really old place, and said as how everybody had heard about the accidents that sometimes happen. The machinery was big and sometimes people got hurt. But never the Maintenance Technicians. And this is because the machines in the Factory recognize us. Because of the Sacrifice.
‘All of us here’ he said, ‘made a decision about what we were willing to lose for this job, for that safety’ He held out his right hand, with the ring finger missing down to the last knuckle. Everybody assumed that he had got it caught in one of the machines, and nobody talked about it.
‘This is what I chose to give up, but we all picked different things.’ Stache Mike piped up,’Toes are pretty popular, cause nobody can tell!’ Skinny Mike elbowed him, and said ‘Toes, aren’t the best choice though, STACHE. ‘Cause then you’ll end up with a limp, no matter which one you pick.’
Paulie stepped forward a little big and said in a loud voice, that he had picked his ear and he kinda wished he had chose something else, on account of the hearing loss. Everybody nodded, turns out they all agreed that was a bad choice. Big Mike turned to me and said that he had picked his appendix, because everybody knew you didn’t need one. But it had hurt a whole fuck-ton, and he had spent weeks in pain because of it. ‘Yeah, picking an inside one is really rough, cause you gotta cut it out yourself.’ Short Mike said.
I looked around at the circle of MT’s in the pump room. Some missing fingers, some teeth, some with a limp, and of course Paulie with his missing ear. Big Josh patted my shoulder and said ‘It’s up to you. You get to decide if you’re willing to do this and what you can live without.’ I took a deep breath. I reminded myself that this would mean I was set for life, the Maintenance staff almost never got fired. And everybody was pretty friendly here, nobody ever screamed at me or called me a stupid SOB or whatever. I put my right hand on my chest and nodded really slowly. I held out my left hand, and said ‘I think… the pinky.’ My dad had busted it up pretty bad when I was little, and it had never healed right. It barely worked anyway.
Some of the techs nodded, and some shook their heads, but Big Josh gave everybody a Look, and said that that’s a good choice. He and I walked up to the pump machine, which had a little ledge with a panel above it. Big J popped the panel open and took out a really old looking knife with a wooden handle. He took out a bottle of medical grade rubbing alcohol and poured it all over the knife and my hands, then handed me the knife. ‘This part you do on your own’ he said.
I saw a series of dents on the ledge, and suddenly realized how they had gotten there. I put my hand on the ledge with all my fingers tucked in except my pinky. ‘It’s worth it, it’s worth it’ I kept saying in my head.
Not going to lie, it hurt like a sonofabitch. But it turns out Big Josh used to be an EMT, so he patched me up pretty good, and then gave me some painkillers. He dropped the finger into the pump machine, and then we all went back to the Maintenance Shop. For the rest of my shift we all sat and the older MT’s just told me stories; funny things that had happened at work, scary things that had happened at work, general advice and giving each other crap. We all got a free lunch, on Big Josh, who said he was really pleased to have me on the team. He said I’d just be shadowing the other techs until my hand healed up, but for now, to just take it easy.
I’m not sure how I’m going to explain this all to my brother, but at least we ain’t back in Utah. Anything is better than that.

What mattered was that I showed up and did my best, that as long as I was a hard worker and did what needed to be done, I’d always have a job there.
A Maintenance Technician job really was the holy grail of jobs, too. As long as you ‘kept your nose clean’ you were guaranteed a good job, with regular pay raises and full benefits. I knew some of their guys had worked here for decades, and old Bob had retired out of the department with full retirement benefits earlier in the year. Big Josh told me if I was willing to make some sacrifices I’d be set for life.
Big Josh just had me shadow him for the rest of the day as he went about his rounds. He did some paperwork, showing me what machines were due for maintenance today; and there was a whole schedule of which machines to work on and when. I always saw the MT’s working on different things, but I never realized how organized it was. He took me with him out to a busted conveyor belt, and had me hand him tools while he worked on fixing it. Skinny Mike, one of the newer MTs, flashed me a big thumbs up and grinned at me when we got back from that.
Big Josh let me go off to lunch after that and Skinny Mike took me over to the unofficial Maintenance Tech table. Everybody nodded at me, and Mike asked what I thought about my first day. ‘It was great’ I said. The other techs nodded back and started giving me advice, except for Paulie. He was a little hard of hearing on account of how he was missing an ear, so I think he didn’t hear what the others were saying, and he was pretty focused on his sandwich.
Short Mike told me to always pay attention to the machinery parts that were coated yellow, cause that meant they were tricky. Bald Mike told me that I should make sure and pay attention in Electrical Safety class, cause getting shocked is no joke! Stache Mike told me to really pay attention to the rules about the windows. I know he had had some problems with that earlier, there had been an incident in the parking lot that had made everybody late one day.
I asked everybody if they were happy in the Maintenance department, and everybody nodded at once. Even Paulie. Bald Mike said they had all made sacrifices to get where they were, but it was worth it. MTs were really respected at the factory, and it was a big honor to be asked to join. Short Mike said he hoped I was ready to work really hard, that it took blood, sweat and tears to be a MT. I said I would give it my all, and everybody laughed, except Paulie, who I figured didn’t hear me. Skinny Mike replied that hopefully that wouldn’t be needed. I was just glad they were all being so accepting. Having a good relationship with your coworkers could make work so much more bearable. And I knew from experience that having crappy coworkers could make work hell.
Skinny Mike walked back with me to continue shadowing Big Josh, but on the way back he said something kinda weird. He told me to really think about what I was willing to give up to learn the ropes, and that he wished he’d picked something different. I must have had a confused look on my face, because he slapped my back and told me not to worry about it. But I did. Was I missing something? But Big Josh told me Skinny Mike was just a joker, and that I would be getting my new uniform tomorrow.
When I got home and told my little brother about my big raise and promotion, he must have picked up on my unease. He asked me if I was sure about this. Said that he’d heard a lot of weird things about the factory, plus all the rules they made you follow were a little…intense. I had to admit, what Skinny Mike said was freaking me out a little. All the Maintenance Techs said they liked their jobs, but now I wondered. Maybe I should have stayed just a runner. Maybe I was overthinking it though. I got that anxiety thing sometimes. The way me and Artie grew up, you got used to expecting the other shoe to drop. But we’d only been scraping by so far. We’d been living in our pos car when we first got away from our folks. It took us months to save up for the crappy one bedroom apartment we were living in now. I had been real lucky to find this job in the first place. We even had savings now. The only thing I was really sure of was that we weren’t going back to Utah. There was nothing there for us. Anything was better than that.
That’s what I kept reminding myself as I went in to work the next day. Nothing that could ever happen at work could possibly be worse than what me and Artie had gotten away from. When I got in, Skinny Mike and Bald Mike smiled at me and waved me over. ‘Your uniform is ready!’ Bald Mike told me, ‘You ready to join the big boys? And, uh, girls, too’ he said with an awkward laugh. ‘We don’t discriminate! Please don’t tell HR I said that!’ I snorted, Bald Mike was really good at putting his foot in his mouth, but I didn’t mind. I knew he meant well. I also knew that Short Paulie would kick his butt if he really meant that. She was a badass, and didn’t take any of that crap. Short Paulie was our HR lady, and she was from New Jersey. Rumor was she really knew how to get rid of bodies.
I promised him I wouldn’t say nuthin’ as we headed up to Maintenance. He looked really grateful, and mimed wiping sweat off his forehead as Skinny Mike and I laughed. Big Josh looked real pleased as I got in, and handed me my new uniform. MTs all got to wear dark brown overalls over their regular clothes. Big Josh always joked that the color was great for hiding stains. He said I could put it on in the bathroom if that made me more comfortable, but then to come to the 2nd floor pump room when I was ready.
I’ll be honest, the uniform was a baggy sack, and didn’t really make anyone look good. But everybody respected the MTs, so I tried telling myself that it didn’t matter. What matters was having a good safe job, with coworkers who respected me, and that paid good. I psyched myself up in the mirror ‘You can do this!’ But I still had nervous cramps in my belly. Hopefully that would go away with time though. I was just worried about doing a good job, right?
I got to the pump room, and all the maintenance techs were there, huddled in a little circle, whispering. They all looked my way as I came in, which freaked me out a little. But I put on my game face; I was good at looking like everything was fine, when everything was, in fact, not fine at all.
Big Josh came out from behind the pump machine with a serious expression, and told Stache Mike to lock the door. OK, now I was freaking out a little more, why did they need to do that? No, no it’s fine, if I yelled someone would come to see what was up right? Except that the machines were all running on the factory floor, so probably nobody would hear. And the pump room door was a thick fire door, I remembered. Fuck.
Big Josh started talking, ‘Now we all know that being a Maintenance Technician is a big deal. A big responsibility. And it’s best to go forward with open eyes. Being a tech requires hard work, and of course, the Sacrifice.’
Wait, what?! What sacrifice? Am I about to get my throat slit? A million thoughts were going through my head at once as I was standing there frozen with a polite expression on my face. I was sure my undershirt was soaked through with sweat.
A couple of the MT’s starting chanting ‘Sacrifice! Sacrifice! Sacrifice!’ I laughed a little, nervously, but my feet were rooted to the spot. This is not how I want to die! Even good pay and good benefits are not worth this!!
Then Skinny Mike whacked the other Techs and told them to cut it out, in a loud whisper. Big Josh walked over to me and took me into the circle of techs in front of the big pump machine. He gave the chanting techs a hard look and continued, ‘Like I said, hard work and sacrifice. We want you to go into this with open eyes, so we always start with this part. And, if it’s too much, you can still change your mind, no hard feelings.’
Now I was confused and scared. So I laughed the fakest laugh ever and asked what he meant.
Everybody looked very serious now. Big Josh told me that the Factory was a really old place, and said as how everybody had heard about the accidents that sometimes happen. The machinery was big and sometimes people got hurt. But never the Maintenance Technicians. And this is because the machines in the Factory recognize us. Because of the Sacrifice.
‘All of us here’ he said, ‘made a decision about what we were willing to lose for this job, for that safety’ He held out his right hand, with the ring finger missing down to the last knuckle. Everybody assumed that he had got it caught in one of the machines, and nobody talked about it.
‘This is what I chose to give up, but we all picked different things.’ Stache Mike piped up,’Toes are pretty popular, cause nobody can tell!’ Skinny Mike elbowed him, and said ‘Toes, aren’t the best choice though, STACHE. ‘Cause then you’ll end up with a limp, no matter which one you pick.’
Paulie stepped forward a little big and said in a loud voice, that he had picked his ear and he kinda wished he had chose something else, on account of the hearing loss. Everybody nodded, turns out they all agreed that was a bad choice. Big Mike turned to me and said that he had picked his appendix, because everybody knew you didn’t need one. But it had hurt a whole fuck-ton, and he had spent weeks in pain because of it. ‘Yeah, picking an inside one is really rough, cause you gotta cut it out yourself.’ Short Mike said.
I looked around at the circle of MT’s in the pump room. Some missing fingers, some teeth, some with a limp, and of course Paulie with his missing ear. Big Josh patted my shoulder and said ‘It’s up to you. You get to decide if you’re willing to do this and what you can live without.’ I took a deep breath. I reminded myself that this would mean I was set for life, the Maintenance staff almost never got fired. And everybody was pretty friendly here, nobody ever screamed at me or called me a stupid SOB or whatever. I put my right hand on my chest and nodded really slowly. I held out my left hand, and said ‘I think… the pinky.’ My dad had busted it up pretty bad when I was little, and it had never healed right. It barely worked anyway.
Some of the techs nodded, and some shook their heads, but Big Josh gave everybody a Look, and said that that’s a good choice. He and I walked up to the pump machine, which had a little ledge with a panel above it. Big J popped the panel open and took out a really old looking knife with a wooden handle. He took out a bottle of medical grade rubbing alcohol and poured it all over the knife and my hands, then handed me the knife. ‘This part you do on your own’ he said.
I saw a series of dents on the ledge, and suddenly realized how they had gotten there. I put my hand on the ledge with all my fingers tucked in except my pinky. ‘It’s worth it, it’s worth it’ I kept saying in my head.
Not going to lie, it hurt like a sonofabitch. But it turns out Big Josh used to be an EMT, so he patched me up pretty good, and then gave me some painkillers. He dropped the finger into the pump machine, and then we all went back to the Maintenance Shop. For the rest of my shift we all sat and the older MT’s just told me stories; funny things that had happened at work, scary things that had happened at work, general advice and giving each other crap. We all got a free lunch, on Big Josh, who said he was really pleased to have me on the team. He said I’d just be shadowing the other techs until my hand healed up, but for now, to just take it easy.
I’m not sure how I’m going to explain this all to my brother, but at least we ain’t back in Utah. Anything is better than that.
