2023.06.10 09:14 Large-Ad4556 4.0 gpa but bad history
Hello,
I am currently a comp sci major in community college and I’ve had a 4.0 gpa the past two semesters (3.7 cum. due to 2 college courses taken in HS) and I will be graduating with my associates in the fall before transferring for spring 2024.
The problem is that I have a bad transcript history, as I withdrew from my first semester the previous year (although it doesn’t factor into gpa) and I also dropped out of my previous college before going into CC (didn’t know my purpose for being in college). Basically I withdrew twice before finally trying in school. As you can imagine, this will look bad during transfer admissions.
However, I have completed a coding bootcamp and I have a lot of programming projects completed, including my own site along with a summer internship as a software developer this summer at a mid-sized startup. I’m also hoping that they can see the improvement and it’s only been upwards since I continued my education. I went from a 2.15 gpa to 3.7.
Overall, what are my chances on getting into a competitive CS university or SUNY such as Stony Brook University? I live in New York so out of state isn’t really an option.

[WP] It turns out that the Statue of Liberty is actually a Weeping Angel, it’s just so big that it’s always been visible to someone. Now, with the smoke filling New York, it’s gone unobserved for the first time.
Washington Post – June 10th 2023 // Page 1 Article 1 // Paragraph 1-3:
The Statue of Liberty has gone missing!
Yesterday night, at 3:00 AM, an employee at the symbol of New York was working his nightshift when he discovered a giant crater where the Statue of Liberty once had stood. The police have refused to disclose the name of the employee or any further detail.
Our Journalist, Joshua Lionheart, has taken testimonies from a few shipmen who heard a loud screeching sound the night Liberty disappeared. And two Cargo ships had disappeared coming from close to New York.
The Whitehouse declared a national emergency upon the event and stated that “The theft of lady liberty was an attack against the identity of the United States; the perpetrators of such heinous actions with be dealt with using swift force. We shall return ease to the mind of the people in any way necessary.”

US Military satellite USA-315 // June 17th 2023 // 19:00:
USA-315 navigation satellite picked up a foreign large body traveling 15 kilometers off the coast of Salvador. The object of unknown origin is traveling at an estimated speed of 90 kilometers per hour with no signs of slowing down. It is partially submerged in the ocean, revealing only a black crown-like smut. Squadron Alpha-092 has been designated to confront it at the predicted area of its meeting land.
Report // Operation: FrenchKiss // Alpha-092 // Salvador, State of Bahia, Brazil // June 18th 2023 // 03:00:
The object has ascended from the shore. It appears to be a statue-like entity covered in black oceanic mud. Our commander suspects that it is the Statue of Liberty The moment it was out of the water, it started sprinting at the speed of 200 kilometers per hour. The shockwaves from its trampling shattered the windows of the nearby building. Our logistics have estimated that it is heading directly towards the statue of Christ the Redeemer located in Rio, Parque Nacional da Tijuca - Alto da Boa Vista, Rio de Janeiro - State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (-22.9517579077614, -43.210476475399545). 2023.06.10 08:59 Super-Waltz-5676 Lawyers blame ChatGPT for tricking them into citing bogus case law
Two lawyers in New York might face sanctions for submitting fictitious legal research in a court filing, which they claim was provided by the AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT. The lawyers had used the AI tool to search for legal precedents for a case they were handling, but ended up referencing non-existent court cases suggested by the AI.
Here's a recap: Involvement of ChatGPT in Legal Proceedings: The lawyers, Steven Schwartz and Peter LoDuca, employed ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot, to find legal precedents for a case against Avianca, a Colombian airline. The chatbot, known for generating essay-like answers, suggested several aviation-related court cases, which the lawyers included in their lawsuit filing. They later found out that many of these cases were non-existent or involved non-existent airlines.
- The lawyers trusted the AI bot's suggestions without verifying them, leading to the inclusion of these fictitious cases in their court filing.
- Schwartz confessed to the judge that he was under the misconception that ChatGPT was pulling information from sources inaccessible to him.
Impact and Consequences: The use of non-existent cases led to a significant issue in the lawsuit, with the judge expressing disappointment and concern over the lawyers' failure to validate the cases. Avianca's lawyers and the court initially identified the fictitious case references, but Schwartz and LoDuca did not act promptly to correct them.
- The judge, P. Kevin Castel, confronted the lawyers about the bogus legal references, leading to apologies from both lawyers.
- Schwartz shared his embarrassment and remorse over the situation, assuring that safeguards had been put in place to prevent a recurrence.
- LoDuca admitted his lack of adequate review of the material compiled by Schwartz.
The Larger Conversation around AI: The incident triggered broader discussions on AI use and the need for understanding and regulation. The case illustrated the potential risks of using AI technologies without fully understanding their operation.
- Microsoft has invested in OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, and the AI's potential to revolutionize work and learning has sparked both excitement and concern.
- An adjunct professor at the Center for Legal and Court Technology highlighted the dangers of using AI technologies without knowing the associated risks.
- Many industry leaders have voiced concerns over potential threats from AI, arguing for their mitigation to be a global priority.
Legal Repercussions: The lawyers are now facing possible punishment over their reliance on AI-generated, non-existent legal precedents. However, their law firm argues that this was due to carelessness and not bad faith, urging the judge to avoid sanctions.
- Their attorney argued that the lawyers, particularly Schwartz, had a hard time with new technology and made an error in using the AI without fully understanding it.
- The judge has not yet ruled on the potential sanctions.
Implications for the Legal Profession and AI: This case has sparked discussions in legal and technology circles, underscoring the importance of understanding AI technologies before using them in professional settings. It also highlights the potential risks and consequences of misuse.
- This case was presented at a conference attended by legal professionals, and it generated shock and confusion.
- The incident marks the first documented potential professional misconduct involving generative AI in the legal field.
- Experts have stressed on the importance of understanding the AI technologies, citing their potential to "hallucinate," i.e., generate fictitious but seemingly realistic information.
