2023.05.31 05:55 whoatetheherdez Jeezy – Church In These Streets 2015 Def Jam
2023.05.31 05:50 relyks_gnaoh Advices needed for low MCAT applicants.
Hi everyone,
I would like some advices regarding making a school list and to know if there is any other deficiencies in addition to my low MCAT. Straightforward advices are also welcomed.
So to start off, here are the basics:
Background and stats: - Did not immigrate to the US until I was 18 (was an I-20 for a few years but now currently holding a permanent resident card); LGBTQA+; my race is probably overrepresented in medicine (Southeast Asian).
- Graduated from a T50 state school with highest honors and departmental honors in January 2023.
- Major: Cell Biology / minor: Women’s and Gender studies
- cGPA = 3.86, sGPA = 3.80
- MCAT: first try is 505; second try is 507.
Research: - Hours: 2,500 - Publications*: 1 second-author publication, 1 solo publication, 2 first author publications, (and 2 fourth-author publications, which are fully written but the relationship between my graduate advisor (the first author) and my PI is really intense right now, so I doubt they would even be published within 2023.) All are in journals with IF > 5. - 2 poster presentations at my undergrad symposiums
*I’m a biologist that can code and do math. I also think another strong suit of me is endless creativity. For me, publications are pretty easy, as I can easily come up with ideas for my own projects (which can be executed at no costs) and actually then follow through with computational analysis and decent writing.
Clinical: - a combined 250 hours of shadowing for pharmacy, optometry, dentistry, and family medicine. - no clinical volunteering
Non-clinical volunteering/services: - I love cats so I have worked at a cat shelter for around 500 hours.
- I worked at the writing center for 2 consecutive semesters, which accumulated 200 hours. This was where I fell in love with teaching and mentorship. 😊
I want to start by saying that I’m very aware my MCAT is likely going to hold me back from places, and I’m really not trying to seek anecdotes that provide comforts. I genuinely feel dumb because of my low MCAT scores, even though my friends and mentors have been insisting otherwise 😢 My practice tests which simulated testing conditions hovered around the 513-515 range, but the nervousness at the testing center always gets the best of me 🥲I also was diagnosed with ADHD-H at 17 and have been medicated since then. However, AAMC denied accommodation since parts of the documentation were from foreign language / hospital / physician.
I was wondering what are my best next steps. Should I apply this 2024 cycle? What should my school list look like? Any advice or insight is greatly appreciated and thank you all 🥲💔

2023.05.31 05:11 Lachioninja Home field advantage or AMERICAN LOCKER BIAS!
Tyler,
I have stood by your side with all the J'ACCUSE's that have been fired at you and believed you have put incredible effort in research and done the sports world a favour.
HOWEVER!!! The home field advantage episode I believe to be your least researched, least credible and most BIASED episode.
There is very little discussion into any actual TANGIBLE bias or advantage to a home team other than FANS LOUD and AWAY TEAM UNCOMFY. I am of the belief that when you cross that white line to play sports you are playing the sport, not lounging around playing videogames and moaning about how uncomfy you are. You suck it up and you COMPETE!!!
There is an absolute plethora of other sports where home field advantage has actual effect on play other than the AMERICAN FOOTBALL LOCKER ORGY which apparently is the BIGGEST factor in a teams homefield advantage.
Some examples include:
CRICKET - The pitch is CRUCIAL in cricket, each team prepares their own pitch to suit their team before the game. Grassy, fast pitches suit a pace bowler strong side, dusty bowls of dirt suit spinners, flat concrete-esque suiting batters. There have even been cases of Pitch DOCTORING (*cough* *cough INDIA *cough* *cough*) where curators prepare one side of a pitch differently to the other to suit their right handed batting side rather than the oppositions predominately left handed. The field size also changes based on what ground you play at and the grass is trimmed to slow or speed up the ball as it runs along the ground.
MOTORSPORT - Young drivers driving at their home race will have raced on a circuit a million times and know the best braking, turning and acceleration points giving them an advantage against other drivers. Examples being Silverstone in the f1 where british drivers nearly always perform well due to being raised on that track
AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL - The size of the grounds are very loose at the amateur level and will be vastly different from venue to venue. Wide, spacious grounds suit the teams that have strong wing players as well as halfback and half forwards. Tight, cramped grounds help teams with a strong midfielders as they wrestle for the ball. My home footy ground was a marsh so calve muscles were very developed across all team members and often the oppositions would lose players to calf cramps during the game, giving us an ADVANTAGE.
GEOGRAPHY - is a MAJOR factor. Distance travelling to games, weather effects, whether where someone lives actually has the environment to TRAIN on (how good is a skiier who doesn't live near mountains, or a swimmer with no pool/water?). but this was only touched on LIGHTLY rather that fangirls gawking in at naked football players is a MUCH bigger factor.
I expected BETTER from you for this episode and believe that there is WAY MORE to home field advantage than just how someone FEELS when they're getting ready for a game.
J'ACCUSE over.
(On a side note my gut feeling is you did research into these effects and I am continually impressed with the amount of effort you put in to the research and presentation of these episodes. Keep up the amazing work!)

2023.05.31 05:03 epcati1994 What does earning my first $30,000 a week feels like? Before turning 30
I'm 29 years old; until this month, I've been living a normal life, like most people, dealing with work-related stress and everyday troubles.
But good fortune suddenly beckoned to me this month, and I experienced a significant turning point in my life. I earned my first $30,000 through the web.
I won't go into the detailed process or recommend specific tools or methods, but as a non-native English speaker, I still want to share my thoughts on the week that brought about this achievement.
To be honest, most people like me would likely agree with the view that "this world is f**ked up." A few individuals hold excessive resources, and while social media platforms like TT and INS promote glamorous lifestyles, we all know it's not real. The majority of people are still struggling.
In this era, the methods to make real big money seem limited to gambling, illegal activities, and the internet (especially is …… you know what I mean).
Influenced by this perspective, I pay attention to information that may present opportunities for me. It's a good habit. Although I'm no longer in the golden learning age, I still make an effort to understand the logic behind each piece of information and try to find commonalities and patterns. Based on that information, I then imagined whether it could help me.
The opportunity I had also came unexpectedly.
It should be May 6 or 7; after finishing my BJJ class, I heard another classmate discussing the need for a team to assist with their company's VJ projects. Instantly, I thought I could take on the project and earn some money because I had been studying UNITY& AI applications.
So, I immediately volunteered and had a conversation with him, which eventually led to a formal meeting with his team.
The communication process was challenging, but thankfully, I had enough experience to navigate through the meeting successfully. I exuded confidence, which I believe won me favor with the project manager. And also, with the help of my classmate, I gained a precious opportunity.
Initially, I planned to complete the entire project by myself with the assistance of AI. However, I quickly realized that it was practically impossible. Therefore, I broke down the project into several detailed tasks and started searching various communities, chat groups, and forums for people I believed could help me with those tasks (once again, thanks to the internet). After three days of painful searching and communication, my "team" was finally assembled.
Perhaps due to time zone differences or other reasons, I could contact them every night after finishing my regular job. This allowed the project to progress efficiently. Finally, on May 18, I completed the work, and the payment was received the following week.
Although the amount may not seem like much on social media, it's undoubtedly a milestone in my growth. Through this project, I clarified things I had never summarized before. If a person wants to accomplish something, they need:
- Always maintain curiosity because you never know when opportunities will arise.
- Stable emotions.
- Execution, regardless of circumstances, must follow the plan.
- Social skills. and social network.
- Luck!!!!!!!!! Most important thing.
Anyway, I want to inspire more people with my story. We live in an era where more resources are available to us than we may imagine. Don't be afraid to try new opportunities and dream big.
I hope everyone reading this article can find money-making opportunities that suit them.

2023.05.31 04:19 ShortAIStory Wings of Valor: The Axolotl's Defense
| https://preview.redd.it/4kfpdck2b43b1.jpg?width=512&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1e90a0138aa23ace6b0be2edddbd2c478e559529 Chapter 1: Shadows on the Horizon Peace reigned over the rejuvenated Axolotl Kingdom after the triumphant events of their previous journey. Axie, Luna, and Ollie had become revered figures, celebrated for their bravery and the restoration of harmony. However, their newfound tranquility was soon disrupted by whispers that carried on the wind—an imminent threat approaching their beloved realm. Rumors began to spread like wildfire, carried by the murmurs of creatures in the forests and the ripples in the kingdom's shimmering waters. Whispers spoke of an outside invader, a formidable force plotting to seize the kingdom's magic and subjugate its inhabitants. The trio knew they could not turn a blind eye to this peril, for they had sworn to protect their home and all those who called it their own. With a resolute gleam in his eyes, Axie called for a gathering of the kingdom's leaders and allies. Luna's gentle light guided them to the ancient council chamber, a solemn place adorned with tapestries woven by generations past. There, amidst the aged stone walls, they awaited the council's decision. As Axie addressed the assembly, his voice carried the weight of determination and the echo of past victories. "We have faced countless trials before and emerged victorious," he declared. "Now, we must unite once more to defend our kingdom from the looming threat that threatens our very way of life. We cannot falter, for the spirit of our realm depends on our unwavering valor." The council, inspired by Axie's words and the trio's previous heroism, pledged their support. Warriors with hardened scales, mages versed in ancient incantations, and the wise creatures of the kingdom stepped forward, ready to stand beside Axie in the face of the encroaching darkness. Ollie, his eyes shining with fierce determination, spoke passionately to the gathered assembly. "We are the defenders of our home, the guardians of its magic and its heart," he exclaimed. "Let us rise as one, a united force that will not yield to the impending threat. Together, we shall forge a shield of bravery and resilience." The council deliberated, their voices hushed and serious. They weighed the gravity of the situation and contemplated the strategies that would be needed to protect their realm. After careful consideration, they reached a unanimous decision—Axie would lead the defense, Luna would serve as the guiding light in the darkest of times, and Ollie would inspire their forces with his unyielding spirit. Armed with this mandate, Axie, Luna, Ollie, and their newfound allies set out to gather intelligence on the impending invasion. They ventured into treacherous terrains, traversing dense forests and venturing deep into hidden caves, in search of ancient beings who held fragments of knowledge about the invader's plans. One such being was Arion, the guardian of the Celestial Waters. In the depths of the sacred pool, Arion revealed an ancient prophecy that had long been etched into the very fabric of their realm. The prophecy spoke of a time when darkness would attempt to claim the light, and only through the unity of the kingdom's defenders could the balance be restored. With this vital information, Axie and his allies formulated a strategy. They honed their combat skills, enhanced their magic, and forged alliances with neighboring realms who shared their commitment to preserving peace and harmony. Days turned into nights as Axie tirelessly coordinated the preparations. He consulted with seasoned tacticians, strategists, and skilled artisans to fortify the kingdom's defenses. The inhabitants of the Axolotl Kingdom rallied, contributing their skills and resources to the cause, fortifying their homes and training in combat techniques. The atmosphere crackled with a palpable sense of anticipation and determination. The kingdom's defenders, clad in armor adorned with symbols of unity, stood tall and resolute. Each one understood the gravity of the impending battle and the importance of their role in protecting their cherished home. As the final preparations took shape, Axie called for a gathering at the Great Amphitheater—a vast open space where the kingdom's inhabitants could gather in unity. The amphitheater was adorned with banners bearing the emblem of the Axolotl Kingdom, representing resilience and unwavering strength. In the golden light of dawn, Axie, Luna, Ollie, and the gathered warriors, mages, and wise creatures assembled in the heart of the amphitheater. Their eyes met, a shared determination reflected in their gazes. Axie stepped forward, his wings shimmering with a radiant glow. His voice carried a blend of solemnity and fiery determination as he addressed the multitude before him. "Today, we stand united against a force that seeks to extinguish our light," he proclaimed. "But we are the defenders of the Axolotl Kingdom, bound by our love for this land and our commitment to each other. Let this battle be a testament to our unwavering valor." His words echoed through the hearts of every individual present, resonating with a deep sense of purpose. Luna's gentle light enveloped the amphitheater, casting a warm glow upon the gathering. Ollie's boundless spirit ignited a fire within each defender, fueling their resolve. With a final rallying cry, Axie raised his wings high, and the defenders responded in unison, their voices carrying a chorus of determination. The kingdom's unity reverberated through the air, a tangible force that would fortify their defense and inspire them to face the impending darkness head-on. As they dispersed to their assigned posts, a sense of anticipation filled the air. The kingdom's defenders took their positions along the borders, their eyes scanning the horizon for any sign of the approaching invader. The atmosphere crackled with tension, but also with an unwavering belief that their unity and valor would prevail. The kingdom waited, bracing for the storm that threatened their tranquility. They knew that the battle ahead would test their mettle and resilience, but they also knew that they stood together, their hearts intertwined in a common purpose. And so, as the sun reached its zenith and cast a warm glow over the Axolotl Kingdom, the defenders awaited the clash with unwavering determination. Their wings of valor spread wide, ready to protect their realm, their unity shining as a beacon of hope in the face of encroaching darkness. The battle would soon begin, and the Axolotl Kingdom would stand as a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who fought to safeguard their cherished home. Chapter 2: The Siege Begins As the sun dipped below the horizon, the sky darkened, mirroring the trepidation that settled over the Axolotl Kingdom. The time for waiting was over—the invaders had arrived. From the depths of the surrounding forests, a legion of shadowy figures emerged, their eyes gleaming with malice. They moved with a coordinated purpose, their every step resonating with the weight of their sinister intentions. Axie stood at the forefront of the kingdom's defenses, his wings unfurled and his heart filled with unwavering resolve. He glanced at Luna and Ollie, their eyes meeting in a silent exchange of solidarity. They knew that their strength lay not just in their individual abilities but in the unbreakable bond they shared. As the invaders approached, Luna's radiant light illuminated the battlefield, casting long shadows that danced with an otherworldly glow. Axie's wings glimmered, ready to take flight, while Ollie's infectious energy surged through the ranks of their allies, invigorating their spirits. The clash began with a thunderous roar—a symphony of swords clashing, spells crackling, and the battle cries of both sides. Axie led the charge, his wings propelling him through the air with grace and precision. He engaged the enemy head-on, his strikes precise and calculated. Luna weaved among the defenders, her light guiding their attacks and blinding the invaders, disrupting their formations. Her gentle glow provided solace to those who fought bravely, instilling in them an unyielding spirit even in the face of adversity. Ollie bounded through the battlefield, his acrobatic leaps and bursts of energy rallying their allies. His infectious enthusiasm spread like wildfire, boosting the morale of the defenders and striking fear into the hearts of their foes. The clash between light and darkness continued unabated, the battlefield painted with a tapestry of valor and sacrifice. The defenders fought with unwavering determination, their every action driven by an unyielding love for their kingdom and a steadfast belief in their cause. As the battle raged on, the defenders realized that the invaders possessed an unexpected resilience. They adapted to the defenders' tactics, revealing a cunning and strategic mind behind their malevolent intentions. The defenders needed to muster all their strength and devise a new plan to turn the tide of the battle. In the midst of the chaos, Axie called for a strategic retreat, his voice cutting through the clamor. The defenders fell back, regrouping near the kingdom's heart—the Grand Citadel. There, Axie, Luna, Ollie, and the council gathered to assess the situation and devise a new strategy. Axie's eyes burned with determination as he addressed the council and their allies. "We must not lose hope," he declared. "The invaders are strong, but we possess something they lack—a unity that runs deep in our veins. Let us use that unity to our advantage." Together, they devised a plan that would utilize the unique strengths of each defender. Axie would lead a strike team to flank the enemy, disrupting their formations. Luna would harness her radiant light to blind the invaders, buying crucial moments for the defenders to strike. Ollie would inspire the remaining forces, rallying their spirits and bolstering their resolve. With renewed determination, the defenders prepared for their second assault. The air crackled with anticipation as they set out, their hearts set on turning the tide of battle in their favor. The fate of the Axolotl Kingdom hung in the balance, and they were ready to defend it with every ounce of their being. Chapter 3: A Beacon of Unity Under the cover of night, the defenders of the Axolotl Kingdom executed their well-planned strategy. Axie led a swift and silent strike team, their wings carrying them through the darkness with unparalleled grace. Luna's radiant light flickered like a distant star, guiding their path and illuminating the enemy's flank. Ollie, with boundless energy, bolstered the spirits of the remaining defenders, inspiring them to fight with unwavering determination. As Axie's strike team descended upon the enemy, chaos erupted. The invaders, caught off guard by the sudden assault, faltered in their formation. With calculated precision, the defenders targeted key adversaries, disorienting and disrupting the enemy's lines. Luna's light danced among the ranks of the invaders, blinding them and causing confusion. The enemies stumbled, their attacks faltering as they struggled to regain their focus. In the midst of the chaos, Axie's strikes were like lightning, swift and decisive, taking down foe after foe. Back at the Grand Citadel, Ollie's rallying cry echoed through the kingdom. His spirited words reached the ears of the remaining defenders, filling them with renewed vigor and reminding them of their shared purpose. With their spirits reignited, they launched a determined counterattack. The battlefield was transformed into a symphony of unity—a chorus of wings, spells, and clash of weapons. The defenders fought as one, their movements harmonized, their hearts beating in unison. Each individual played their part, knowing that their actions were vital to the collective effort. The invaders, disoriented by the strike team's assault and facing the renewed strength of the defenders, began to falter. Their ranks broke, their confidence shattered. The tides of battle shifted, and hope began to swell in the hearts of the defenders. Axie, Luna, and Ollie fought with unwavering resolve at the forefront, inspiring those around them. With each strike, they carved a path through the enemy's ranks, their unity serving as a beacon of hope amidst the chaos. The invaders, realizing their impending defeat, attempted a desperate retreat. But the defenders pressed on, unyielding in their pursuit. With every passing moment, the enemy's forces diminished, until only a handful remained. At the center of the battlefield, Axie faced the enemy's leader—a formidable adversary whose dark aura radiated with malevolence. The two locked eyes, the air around them crackling with tension. It was a battle of wills, a clash between opposing forces. With a mighty surge of energy, Axie unleashed a powerful strike, his wings glimmering with an ethereal light. The enemy leader staggered, their grip on their weapon faltering. In that moment of vulnerability, Axie seized the opportunity, delivering a decisive blow. As the enemy leader fell, defeated, a resounding cheer erupted from the defenders. The invaders, witnessing the downfall of their leader and the unyielding unity of the Axolotl Kingdom, knew their cause was lost. The remaining enemies surrendered, their weapons cast aside. Victory belonged to the defenders. Their unity had prevailed against the forces of darkness, safeguarding their beloved kingdom. The battlefield, once littered with chaos and conflict, was now a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Axolotl Kingdom. Amidst the jubilation, Axie, Luna, and Ollie stood together, their eyes reflecting the triumph and the arduous journey that led them here. They embraced, their bond stronger than ever, their unity unbreakable. As word of the victory spread throughout the kingdom, the inhabitants rejoiced. The story of their brave defenders would echo through the generations, a reminder of the power of unity, courage, and unwavering determination. But even in their triumph, the defenders understood that their work was not yet complete. They would rebuild what was broken, heal what was wounded, and fortify their defenses for any future challenges that may arise. With their unity as their shield and their valor as their weapon, they would continue to protect their cherished realm, standing as a beacon of hope against the darkness that sought to engulf their world. Chapter 4: A Kingdom Reborn The victory resonated through the air, filling the Axolotl Kingdom with a renewed sense of hope and pride. The invaders had been defeated, their dark intentions thwarted by the unwavering unity and valor of the kingdom's defenders. But the battle had taken its toll, leaving scars on the land and the hearts of its inhabitants. Axie, Luna, and Ollie stood amidst the aftermath, their eyes surveying the war-torn landscape. They could see the remnants of the battle—the charred remains of trees, the craters in the ground, and the wounded creatures seeking solace and healing. Their hearts swelled with a mixture of joy for the victory and determination to restore their kingdom to its former glory. They knew that rebuilding would require more than physical repairs—it would require the mending of spirits and the nurturing of unity. With the council's guidance, they devised a plan to heal the wounds of their land and its inhabitants. Teams of healers and artisans were formed, their focus on restoring the kingdom's natural beauty and providing solace to those affected by the conflict. Axie, Luna, and Ollie, together with their allies, led the efforts. They worked side by side with the healers, mending broken wings, tending to wounded souls, and instilling a sense of hope in the hearts of those who had suffered. Slowly, life returned to the Axolotl Kingdom. The once-charred forests began to flourish again, with vibrant blossoms and the gentle rustle of leaves in the wind. The injured creatures found solace and support, their spirits uplifted by the unity and care provided by their fellow inhabitants. In the heart of the kingdom, where the Great Citadel stood, the council gathered once more. Axie, Luna, and Ollie addressed the council, their voices filled with gratitude and determination. "We have triumphed against the darkness, but our work is not yet done," Axie spoke, his wings shimmering with a renewed sense of purpose. "We must ensure that the wounds inflicted upon our kingdom serve as a reminder of the strength we possess and the unity that binds us." Luna's radiant light enveloped the chamber, casting a warm glow upon those gathered. "Let us foster a spirit of compassion and empathy," she said. "Together, we can create a sanctuary where every creature feels valued and supported." Ollie, his boundless energy infusing the room, added, "We will cultivate a culture of unity and resilience, where each voice is heard and every contribution matters. Our kingdom will stand as a testament to the power of togetherness." With unanimous agreement, the council set forth a series of initiatives to rebuild the kingdom's infrastructure, enhance education, and promote the arts. They encouraged gatherings and festivals that celebrated the diversity of the Axolotl Kingdom, fostering a sense of belonging and harmony. As the days turned into weeks and the weeks into months, the Axolotl Kingdom blossomed anew. The wounds of the battle were not forgotten, but they became a source of strength and inspiration, a reminder of the resilience and unity that had carried them through the darkest of times. Axie, Luna, and Ollie continued to serve as beacons of hope, guiding their fellow inhabitants and sharing the lessons they had learned. They mentored the younger generations, instilling in them the values of courage, compassion, and unity. Word of the Axolotl Kingdom's rebirth spread throughout the realm, inspiring neighboring kingdoms to follow suit. The unity displayed by the Axolotl Kingdom became a model for others, a testament to the transformative power of collective action. As time passed, the scars of the battle faded, replaced by a renewed sense of purpose and resilience. The kingdom thrived, its inhabitants living in harmony, and its legacy of unity standing as a testament to the triumph of light over darkness. And so, the Axolotl Kingdom stood as a shining example, forever guarded by the wings of valor and the unbreakable spirit of its defenders. It would serve as a reminder to all who encountered it that, in unity, there was strength, and in valor, there was the power to overcome any challenge. As the sun set over the rejuvenated Axolotl Kingdom, Axie, Luna, and Ollie stood together, their hearts filled with pride and gratitude. They knew that their journey was not over, for their commitment to unity and the protection of their realm would endure for generations to come. submitted by ShortAIStory to ShortAIStory [link] [comments] |

Legal Internship (11-12th) - interned with a team of partners + associates at a T50 law firm in the US. Personally drafted several legal documents and conducted research into education law in a case submitted to the federal government. Also collabroated with the NAACP to help other victims in their education law practice.
Policy Organization (10th-12th) - collaborated with an international team of youth activists on several policy initiatives, the most important of which being collaborating with an undergrad lobbying group at an Ivy to pass a state-level bill.
Anti-Racism Club (11th-12th) - lobbied district administration to fight for the creation of an in-school Anti-Racism Club. As President/Founder, I personally advise my campus principal on matters of discrimination and help distribute resources connected to my work in EC #2.
Debate Volunteering (10th-12th) - State President of an organization that collects old laptops and distributes them to underresourced debate teams. I managed teams in 3 different cities to collect over 5,000 individual devices and distribute them. I also ran and managed several free tournaments to give these debaters better practice and personally coached 5+ teams to national success.
University Research (11th-12th) - conducted soon-to-be-published research on racial disparities in public discourse with an Ivy League professor. Submitting the paper to several academic journals, hopefully will be published by the Fall.
Youth Legal Organization (11th-12th) - serve as a fellow at an organization geared towards local cases pertaining to inequities in education. Personally handle legal research and communications with regards to several cases and collaborate with law students & professors.
News Project (11th-12th) - this is the most recent and in-progress activity on the list, but I'm currently collaborating with a national publication to expand resources for youth advocacy groups to help them draft legislation, gain following, etc. Personally pitching the project to a high-level executive and hoping to expand an existing corporate product of this publication to have a youth-geared, affordable branch-off.
Retail Job (11th-12th) - I work at Barnes and Noble lol.
Awards/Honors:
NSDA Premier Distinction & Academic All-American - given to ~2% of all debaters nationally
AP Scholar with Distinction
2-3 pretty prestigious Debate awards
Writing/Legal research competition award from a T10 Law School
Essays:
I'm just now starting to write these, but the humanities have always been my strong suit, and I'm expecting my essays to be pretty unique/competitive.
LoCs:
APUSH/AP Lang teacher (6/10) - did good work in his class but didn't engage with him on a personal level much.
Debate coach (9/10) - travelled every other weekend with him, he selected me as president of the team, etc. I come in between every class and after school to plan team activities and tournamnets with him. He's also known for writing pretty great letters.
Alumni (9/10) - from an alumni of my high school who I work with on a weekly basis on EC #2. She's written lots of letters for me in the past for scholarships/summer programs, so it should be pretty good and speak to my advocacy efforts.
Counselor (?/10) - my class size is pretty big, so I've heard she mostly writes everyone the same letter, but I've met with her a lot this past semester with regards to my coursework, and she mentioned that she'll elaborate on the fact that my courseload is more rigorous than any other student in my class.
Applying To:
Reaches:
Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Penn, Columbia, Cornell, UChicago (EA), Duke, Stanford, Northwestern, WashU, Northwestern, Berkeley, UCLA, NYU
Targets:
Michigan (EA), USC (EA), UCSD
Safety:
UT (in-state auto-acceptance)
I'm nervous that my GPA/Rank isn't super competitive and my Awards & Letters of Rec aren't anything spectacular. I would love any honest opinions on my chances and any recommendations for schools to apply to/things to change.

2023.05.31 02:11 MentalMenta Finding a designer
Hi,
Sorry if this has been asked before, if so, please reply with the link. Long story short, I've seen a lot of posts about trying to find work as a freelancer, but I am currently trying to find one. Is there a good place to look at people's work and try to find someone who will suit a specific project I'm doing?
The longer story: Long time lurker, first time poster. Not a designer, but I have always been a creative (I did a BCA in film and currently work in that industry). I have designed some simple-to-execute designs in the past (like business cards, invites, DVD covers, posters for screenings etc). I'm definitely better conceptually then I am executing an idea. I do know my limitations, and normally go for easier-to-execute ideas when I need to do design something.
As a side project, I'm looking to launch a physical product (dink) and need to find a designer that can help me execute a lable idea. I have a pretty strong idea / concept, although it could be done in a couple of different styles. Where would you start to looking for a designer if you were in my position? Places like fiverr and 99designes are fine for what they are, but not really what I'm looking for. I guess I'm almost asking, how do agencies find designers to execute their ideas?
Also, what are some good tips for communicating / collaborating with a designer, and how would you go about approaching them? I'm happy to be pretty specific about what I want, but also coming from a film background that is pretty collaborative I know the best way to get the best out of creatives is to make sure everyone is on the same page and allowed to have their own freedom of expression within the project. This approach obviously could have some drawbacks if there is not a sufficient understanding between us and they take the idea in a direction I was not intending and don't like. I don't really want to waste their time (or my money), but on the other hand, I don't want to handcuff someone who could elevate my idea. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, MM

2023.05.31 01:53 vernerlatskin Season 4 is honestly kind of trash. PLEASE change my mind - I want to love it.
I'm very picky when it comes to movies and TV. In the last ten years, I've genuinely liked less than ten shows. I have loved far fewer.
Starting with the pilot, I loved this show.
I think season 1 is practically perfect.
Season 2 gets dragged down a bit by the whole prison storyline being kinda pointless, outside of foreshadowing. It's not bad foreshadowing either, it's just that the show spends a lot of time on something that probably could have been conveyed in two episodes or less instead. But season 2 develops Darlene and Angela, and introduces Dom... it's all still amazing, it just feels less focused.
Season 3 feels to me like how season 2 should have. Like season 2 it suffers from still feeling a little murky and unfocused. At many points in season 2 and 3, tbh, it could be argued that there wasn't a completely solid reason for the show to keep going. I'm glad it did, it just feels like they meander some.
Season 4. When it first aired, it felt off-putting to me for a variety of reasons, but mostly due to feeling like the show had just flat out cheated in places, and also due to there being SO MANY unclosed plot threads. None the less, i shrugged it off, and just told myself that I was probably imagining some of them due to poor memory etc.
Over the next year, I watched the entire series three times through, and season 1 along with some various other episodes too many times to count. This is not something I do with anything else. I never rewatch stuff that isn't twin peaks or community. OR this show.
But 2 months back, something reminded me of the scene before Angela's death in S4E1. Something about it was bugging me, and so I started the episode, watched it closely, and I felt kinda duped. The direction and performances and production quality are all great as usual, but suddenly there were major issues i started noticing things that are very hard to reconcile with the accepted explanations given by the show and this community as a whole.
In fact, I see two possibilities regarding the truth about this show:
(A) season 4 tells us 1 story at the surface level but that is just there obfuscate the truth
Or
(B) season 4 is a badly written and conceived collection of 13 episodes, despite the direction, production quality and performances all being uniformly amazing.
What makes this suck, is that if it's actually option B, it actively makes everything before it worse - especially seasons 2 and 3 - due to so much of the show being taken up by TONS of stuff, that according to the show and also this subreddit, doesn't matter, never mattered, and why would you even think that mattered, what is wrong with you, you stupid stupid question asker. After all the show tells us everything explicitly point blank in the finale.
Also, if you almost die in a nuclear plant meltdown that you avert from happening, but there is still an explosion and a fire that knocks you unconscious, when you come our of your coma you can be 100% CURED of your mental illness! As long you explain things to your alters nicely, they will finally understand and absorb themselves back into your consciousness so the real you can come out of hiding.
That last part is pretty representive of the issues I couldn't NOT notice this time around. I don't feel like the show we watched prior to S4 ever would have done something like this. I know Esmail has said this was always the plan, but man, for all the people on here who have a meltdown every time someone even mentions a question that falls outside the shows official Canon, or dares to mention anything "sci-fi" - how do you square THAT circle? Because, even though in wish to God it did, as someone very close to me suffers from schizoaffective disorder, mental illness just DOES NOT work that way no matter how hard you cried at the end. Honestly, time travel would have been more realistic and grounded than this. And don't dare try to say "it's just a TV show" or whatever if you are also one of the ones who get mad when sci-fi type elements or other possible interpretations get mentioned. Sometimes I feel like some of the people here, as well as Esmail, are trying to actually freaking gaslight anyone who think the finale doesn't really add up.
Angela's death and the moments that lead up to it, are also very strange and nonsensical in their execution. Why would Price agree to wear a fucking wire so White Rose could listen to him talk to her, tell her WR is a delusional psycho, and that she should really just let it go and move on - just to see of she buys it or not so WR knows if he is going to have his goons, who Price knows are like ten feet away, kill her. WHY WOULD HE DO THIS? And when did he agree to it? And why wouldn't he just write something down for her to let her know what is really happening so that he could get her to safety? Is Price just stupid suddenly? And why would Angela go from wanting retribution on moment to 30 seconds later just standing there as they shoot her in the back? And for that matter, why is WR, who for 3 seasons is calculated and meticulous and keeping everything on a perfect schedule, suddenly so sloppy and petty and obviously evil?
White Rose's whole character changes some in season 3 as well, but dramatically so in season 4, and not in any sense for the better. Up until this season, it was easy enough to believe she was possibly evil, but she was definitely principled and focused and you felt like there was ambiguity to her. S4 drops that entirely. She might as well put on a twirling mustache and laugh maniacally every time she is on screen with the exception of the two scenes in which she speaks to Elliot - in those scenes she seems sincere and empathetic, but due to the overall changes, we know that she is just trying to manipulate him. Or something. The last confrontation between her and Elliot makes no actual sense in many ways, but one of the things that really got to me was that SHE WAS RIGHT about Elliot, and Elliots response to her was just childish and dumb, not showing even a slight capability for reason or making a coherent argument against her.
And okay, the goddamned machine. If it didn't matter, and it never mattered, and people really should stop asking about it already because that's not what the show is about, stupid - then why does it need to be stopped? If it didn't work, then it poses no real threat outside of a nuclear meltdown, right? The plant is what needs to be shut down, not the machine. But Elliot went to infect the machine with malware to disable it. Disable it from doing what? If the machine is immaterial to the "REAL" story because it's a delusional fantasy that never could have worked anyway, and the only danger it poses is causing the meltdown, then why does Elliot go to infect her machine? He mentions that she wants to destroy the world to her. How? With ONE nuclear power plant melting down? And why is it such a problem that people feel that we should have been given answers to these questions? Elliot apparently knows what it does, and he also seems to think it's dumb, but he he goes there to disable a machine that doesn't work in order to keep it from doing something it never could do.
Better question - why was WR waiting for Elliot with the full brainwashing suite all set up for him? He wouldn't have gone if Price hadn't asked him to, to honor Angela, he says. But it must have been a setup somehow, because WR knew he was coming, and started running the machine long before he arrived. WR casually says that this process was never about brainwashing.
I find it funny the things that some people here will cherry pick facts over. In S2E11 most of the true believer types think everything that WR says is bs, EXCEPT for when he tells Angela that young Angela's bruises were fake. They accept this statement as absolute truth, despite WR seemingly brainwashing an entire army to kill themselves without hesitation any time something goes wrong or she says to. But clearly there is no chance she was lying about the seemingly abused girl sitting in front of a desk with a very deliberately placed copy of Lolita on it.
In that same scene, WR tells Angela Pont blank "it was not a coincidence that you and Elliot became the people that you are after the incident at the WTP". But, you see, she is lying in that part, because it makes the ending we got seem less complete. I would say that finding out whatever the hell that incident even was around be far more informative and useful than 10,000 revelations about being molested.
The episode before that is where Darlene talks about being kidnapped, right before Angela is kidnapped. These parallels either mean SOMETHING, or the show is possibly bad
The molestation reveal is a dumb twist in an actually otherwise great episode. I have now read 2000 and 1 reasons why S4E7 is the best episode of all time, and honestly, I get that it emotionally connected with a ton people, but I really don't see how this information changes anything about the story or characters for the better. And not to mention having Vera pushing the whole thing is pretty convoluted, and Vera's reasoning makes less sense even than leaving a computer game that allows your nemesis to shut down the project that is your life's work for no reason even though without that you technically win and also you shoot yourself because of faith or something.
Vera's return overall felt hack and unneeded for the story in S4, but the fact that they brought him back just to awkwardly facilitate a therapy breakthrough that, and I'm sorry I don't want to hurt anyone with my words, but a therapy breakthrough that I personally feel is another lie. When I look at the scene in S3 where Edward collapses, and the conversation they are having, and try to listen with this information in mind - dude, either the show is lying, or maybe the show is just bad. Because that scene is just STRANGE beyond human comprehension for me.in this context. It's so casual. It sounds more like something you might hear between two old, adult friends who got too drunk the night before, and one of them took advantage of the other. This does not sound like a conversation between an 8 year old and his father who it seems must have very recently raped him. I mean, Elliot acts like this just happened in the scene. And what kind of father apologizes for rape like that? I know there are people here who say this is a carbon copy picture of what this situation really looks like. Maybe it is for them, but as someone with some experience in this matter myself, I guess my picture is just a different one. And okay, fine, I can accept it could be like this for someone out there, but I just don't feel like it was the right choice here. The previous understanding that they were talking about Edward never getting treated for the cancer that kills him seconds later made much more sense to me. And besides, I don't know why we needed to know that anyway - because the show isn't really about that anyway, and you don't need answers for everything, right?
Honestly, the subtext of the show, I will agree, does point to Elliot being sexually abused. Just not by his father. It also points to both Darlene and Angela being abused as well, due to the Lolita references throughout the show. Now, I do think Elliot could possibly be blaming his father for what happened to him, but considering Krista is the least developed, most NPC like character in the show, I don't really trust that she is actually trying to help Elliot have a breakthrough - but that she is repeating the proper keywords to trigger this cover memory.
People will say that this is absurd, but WR KNOWS ABOUT THE SEXUAL ABUSE, as evidenced by the strategically placed copy of Lolita and her speaking to Angela as though her and Elliot were a package deal. There was no need for WR to mention Elliot at all. But she does, and draws explicit parallels between the two of them. The copy of Lolita, the abused young Angela, both point pretty clearly to sexual abuse. Darlene straight up uses the title charactes real name as her own alias. This is a lot of characters having been SA victims, so it seems to me that its all connected. Unless Edward was just the sweetest most prolific pedo in town, I think it's more likely something else happened, or at very least, others were involved. That would make 4.7 an episode that tried really hard to convince the audience of something that is just another layer, another obstraction to decipher. Or it's what the shows says it is and it just feels kind of lazy and insipid.
Look, first several times through, I didn't think any of this. It was only on this recent rewatch, after two years of not thinking about the show that I started noticing these things. After I had my theories I ended up here, and some of the cope I read from people here just blows my mind.
I honestly feel that the indoctrination rooms WR speaks to Elliot and Angela in seem to clearly be crafted in a very specific manner, not to brainwash Elliot or Angela, but to trigger the programming done to them as children. WR pretends that he doesn't know anything about Angela is that scene, but the book is right there. The girl is a double of her child self at the exact age the 'incident' is said to have occurred. Either these elements are purposeful and have meaning in the story, or in my opinion, this is just bad writing. Creating 20-30 intriguing mysteries with symbolism and suggestion and carefully crafted moments, only to toss them all and say they were all red herrings and none of them mattered, you freaking suckers, at very least, shows a lack of respect and maybe even contempt for your audience. The specific references to some of this stuff are too numerous to count. Oh, and that's not how red herrings are supposed to work, you don't spend hours of screen time filling the screen and story with hundreds of little 'clues' to mysteries you aren't even sure are mysteries yet. It makes no sense. All the meticulous crafting of scenes and moments and all the detailed set work, and the specifically framed shots clearly being used to tell the audience to pay attention to that stuff - all of that was just to fux with the audience so they wouldn't guess esmails masterminded secret that no one has ever done before of SA from elliots father, and the fact that the character we know as Elliot is actually another alter created by Elliot that imprisoned Elliot in his own mind , that is literally called the MasterMind. And wow, does that ever sound dumb when I type it out.
Why woulf Eliot create an alter like MasterMind specifically to not know who mr. Robot or his father or Darlene or a ton of other people were, but made sure MM knew who Angela, Krista, and his coworkers were, in addition to how to hack anything, oh and also program in his addiction to Morphine. I mean, if you were creating an alter with intention, and the intention was to create a dark antihero superhacker version of yourself, and you could edit out things like who your sister was, what your father looked like, etc - you know, a slick more focused version of yourself, wouldn't you edit out the crippling addiction? The show says more than once that MM was only born a month ago, so it was Elliot assisted by Mr. Robot that created Fsociety? I thought that made sense for a moment, that Elliot freaked out and created MM when he realized his goals were probably going to have collateral damage no matter what he did. So, then he would create MM, his comic book alter, and put himself in the loop so he wouldnt have to deal with the consequences and memories that were sure to come if they pulled the plan off. But then, when Mr robot pulls who were told is MM back into the fold of the hacker alliance, all MM does is fight him on it every step of the way. Not to mention it makes no sense to edit out Darlene, mr. Robot, etc if MM is meant to work with them.
I'm not saying that Esmail is lying, or that the reality the show sold you is definitely not the one it believes it is depicting - it very well be just as the show and so many insist that it is - exactly what the show explains. Nothing more, nothing less. What I'm saying is that if these are the 'real' answers, the show is providing these answers to questions that are different from the ones the show has given us. In other words, the show is actually, much to my dismay and chagrin, actually very badly written and conceived.
Now if MM was an alter programmed into Elliot when he was a child and triggered into life like a sleeper agent by the dark army in order to carry out this plan as a sort of secret weapon...this is strongly suggested by the moment in S1E4 where Mr. Robot in the monopoly mask gives a mask to Elliot and tells him - "It belongs to you now. Made in the Orient. Made just for your head. Now find your monster and turn the key." The whole show makes more sense through this lens. I never noticed it upon my first several viewings somehow - and this was my favorite episode for a long time, ive seen it the most of all. But once I saw it, I couldn't shake it. His father, as the elder statesman of fsociety, seemingly, passes the mask/torch to his son, says it was made just for his head in the Orient, and hands him a key and tells him to find his monster, which the show now tells us is actually MM. If MM was a programmed alter, designed to focus and use Elliots "rage" so many other things fall into place. They trigger the alter as designed, but it's Mr. Robot, the manifestation of his memories of his father that they did not account for. Mr. Robot is antagonistic towards MM because he knows what MM is and that the consequences he is there to bring about will probably lead to elliots death. It's possible, in this context, that Krista is probably sent specifically as a handler for MM, to monitor him and keep him from discovering his true origins, which would likely end badly for WR because they know what they created and what he is capable of. I would also add that in this version, I would surmise that MM was actually "born" a long time ago, but he was placed in the loop and lived there for years. In the loop, Darlene does not exist because as robot loop Krista explains to MM, not Elliot, that removing Darlene from the loop was their best chance at trapping him (elliot prime) here. She doesn't say it was Masterminds best chance at trapping him there, she refers to a they. It is implied it's the other alters she is referring to - but they don't seem to be taking responsibility for creating MM or the loop, and I see no reason why they would be lying to each other about that. It makes more sense if it was the brainwashing programmers she is referring to, and that they created the loop and then MM and then placed MM there. By having this alter living this loop for years, when he was switched on, he immediately tries to seek what he lived in there for all those years - a job at allsafe, a relationship with Angela, and a world without the Washington township plant (which was removed because being the place his brainwashing originally took place, it's presence might trigger him and wake him up too soon, just like Darlene, which backfired, to say the least). Those things really do kind of belong to MM, he lived that loop for so long. Think of the loop in this instance as training of sorts. I can only assume they would have updated the loop periodically as well, to keep MM himself somewhat up to date so that when he is triggered he would recognize certain people, such as Tyrell, who would have been given a 'monster' of his own, placed in that same loop, as well as Angela, but I think Angela's programming failed "you were supposed to be dead 90 days ago" or whatever WR tells her. She seems to swap with a colder, more monster like persona at times, but it's unstable. For a bit at the end of S1, the presence of her father seemed to trigger her. But it glitches or loses control leading to her Think about that - they wouldn't need to supernaturally share the same 'world' they would just all need to be on the same software revision. Once the Monster alters are triggered, they seek out to change the world they see into what they had in the loop - what does this vicious Tyrrell seek? Power, to be the head of e Corp, filled with so much rage, because of what he doesn't have in this world that he had before. Joanna seemed to be more his handler than his wife, and she seemed to know exactly what was going on with both tyrell and Eliot. This version of event explains these things that the show just kind of drops.
Now, I Cannot prove any of that. And the text of the show explicitly contradicts it, but this is the only way I can make thus stuff make sense. Even the ending where in the current Canon he pretty much just decides to not be mentally ill anymore, in this version that would make so much more sense, as he isn't curing serious mental illness through heroism, he is breaking the bonds of his programming. Which, hey, isn't a perfectly grounded concept either, but it's actually more grounded than the alternative.
Sadly, this does not fix the biggest problem with S4 - well, two problems, actually -
1 - the entire premise of the majority of this season - the magical hack they do that somehow bankrupts a 100 billionaires via 2factor phishing like some fuxing 4chan goblins. Many people have pointed out - no billionare would have that much in liquid assets in any single bank account. Period. The entire IDEA of what they claim to steal is not even connected to how things work. Every hacking scene in this show has been brilliant until this. What's worse is that I don't eve understand how this is supposed to stop WR - they wiped her checking account so now she can't buy ice cream for the deus group on the way home? Kidding. But, seriously, compared to everything the fans came up with and everything that came before, this was boiler plate, brainless writing. It doesn't make sense on any level, tbh. So, the idea is that WR is gonna kill Elliot once the project starts "shipping" (must be one hell of a FedEx box) - also, why couldn't she just rebuild a new one there? Nevermind, doesn't matter, I forgot - so, the plan is to steal ALL ZE MONIES, so she can't pay the shipping fees, thereby stopping her from killing them for a little longer? What next? Stalk WR who is somehow poor now, and have tyrell pay her to let him beat her up now and then? If anything WR would just recover in a week or so and kill MM in the meantime. The whole concept of this is asinine and truly below the shows high standards and possibly even below trash level network tv mystery of the week stuff. S4 is already pretty far outside of grounded, sorry believers.
- The finale seems to me to be missing a major component that I feel was meant to be there throughout Angela. The scripts for season for absolutely stink of frantic rewrites to cover for something. It's pretty obvious what happened here - Portia left the show. They should have recast Angela, but I respect that Esmail tried to roll with it, and make it work without her character - it just feels like that is what seasons 1-3 were heading towards, Elliot, Angela, Tyrell and Darlene all united to fight back and take back control - but originally they would have been plotting to take down the machine itself.
I cannot prove this, to be fair. And I'm probably wrong, but it would have made so much more sense.
But what about the other stuff? If my ideas are so much better, why didn't the obviously more talented people behind the show do that instead? Portia leaving the show can't account for that. And you're right. But something else happened in the lead up to season 4s preproduction that might have just made the whole idea of an underground cabal of secret elites suddenly unpalatable to USA, and possibly to Esmail himself - a little thing called Pizzagate.
Rumors of the pizzagate scandal, leading to crazy people extremists threatening the employees of a small WASHINGTON Pizza joint. It would just look like the show was feeding conspiracy fires. Hell, in the same position I might have done the same thing. And sure, I might be getting the details wrong, but seriously, the story being told in at very least S1 and S2 matches up with this far better than what we got. It matches up with the ultimate ending and the MM reveal as well. This version, go ahead and tell me I'm crazy, but this version absolutely answers all the questions, except for the details of what the machine did. I think it probably was a massive control matrix of sorts, perhaps something that merged parallel realities with this one (not all that sci-fi at this point), it would have been tied to whatever happened to these kids, and it would have been the true source of White Rose's power. They would have banded together, finally realizing who they really were, and they would have destroyed the machine, and WR would have still pulled that trigger, but for different reasons. What reasons would those have been? I have ideas, but that's enough for now.
Seriously, I know these ideas are likely just wrong. That none of this was ever in the plan, and this is just me trying to make sense of the show, because the version we got doesn't really make sense. And I want it to so much. Because I love this show, but if all the symbolism and mystery and surreal everything were nothing but a bunch of puzzle box nonsense that never had answers and was just there to look cool, well, if that's the case then my opinion is sadly that my favorite show was ultimately not very good, actually. There are probably even better versions Than i could ever figure out, and if it was revealed that no, the stuff that I came up with was way off, but here's the real story and the we get hit with mind blowing thing that had to be changed for reasons? That would also be awesome.
But we wont.
I don't expect anyone to read this massive novel I spit out over the course of several hours, but if anyone does, thank you. I did this largely for myself because I needed to get it off my mind. Goodnight.

2023.05.31 00:33 aspiring_crocodile Roland at the business meeting in NYC
I just rewatched that episode again, and I really thought Roland was very adorable, in it. He's usually funny and annoying, even though I like him, of course, but sometimes he gets me. However, in this episode he's just so cute (?) with his suit, his briefcase and all, how nervous he's, etc., and specifically when he overhears those executives making fun of Johnny, and speaks up for him. I found it heart warming. It might also be due the fact that I'm two episodes away from the finale and I'm emotional lol, but still. Does anyone else think that?

Addam seldom smiles in public, and dark bags beneath his eyes bely the troublesome relationship he has with sleep. - Alternate Characters: N/A for now
Timeline
- 187 AC: Perianne Frey, Addam’s elder sister, is born to Symond Frey and Marilda Celtigar.
- 189 AC: Addam and Marissa Frey are born to Symond and Marilda.
- 194 AC: Addam begins his tutelage under Symond. As the heir’s heir, his father gives him a well-rounded education — involving stewardship, military command, and diplomacy, alongside the usual nobleman's education.
- 200 AC: Symond dies whilst riding along the Green Fork, after his horse slips along the slippery rocks — falling into the river and trapping Symond underneath. Symond drowns before his horse can be lifted off him, leaving Addam as heir.
- 203 AC: Frey Regency Crisis
- 2nd Moon: Lord Franklyn Frey dies, Addam Frey becomes Lord. Perwyn Frey is named regent in Lord Franklyn’s will.
- 3rd Moon: While traveling, Perwyn Frey’s camp is set upon by supposed bandits. Perwyn Frey and his son Theomore Frey die; Celesse Frey survives after riding away into the woods on her lonesome. Osmund Frey is the new regent.
- 5th Moon: A catspaw breaks into the East Castle and sets the Lord’s chambers ablaze. Addam and Marissa are rescued from within by men loyal to Lyonel Frey and House Nayland, but Marissa gets briefly trapped beneath a burning log. Marissa’s face is permanently disfigured as a result.
- 6th Moon: Osmund Frey and his youngest son Raymond Frey are murdered in their beds. Osmund’s eldest son, Walton Frey, rides with his sister Sarra to his mother’s home at Breaker's Beak, and does not return until Bertram is arrested. Bertram Frey is named regent.
- 7th Moon: “Black Benfrey” Rivers, bastard son of Bertram Frey, is caught trying to contact catspaws and other shady figures in a town nearby Hag’s Mire, and is arrested. Bertram attempts to downplay his bastard’s actions as those of a rogue bastard — but Addam secretly goes behind his Uncle’s back and orders Black Benfrey to be tortured for information.
- 8th Moon: Under torture, Black Benfrey admits his own role and the role of his father in the death of Perwyn, Theomore, Osmund, and Raymond, as well as the attack on Addam himself. Bertram is arrested by Lyonel’s men.
- 9th Moon: Eamon Frey leaves the Twins, under suspicion of being involved in Bertram and Benfrey’s plots, but with no firm evidence available. Addam orders a dozen Frey guards to attempt to chase Eamon down, but Eamon evades them and rides into Mallister lands before he can be caught. From Seagard, he takes a ship south.
- 10th Moon: Bertram and Black Benfrey are executed. Lyonel is offered the regency, but refuses. Addam’s mother, Marilda Celtigar, is declared Regent.
- 204 AC: Lyonel Frey leaves the Twins — coincidentally also riding to Seagard.
- 205 AC: On his sixteenth name day, Addam begins to rule in his own right.
- 206 AC: Arrangements for a betrothal between Addam Frey and Alys Blackwood begins.
- 206 AC: Perianne Frey leaves the Twins and marries Osric Dustin.
- 207 AC: Marissa Frey leaves the Twins and marries Paxter Redwyne.
- 207 AC: Addam Frey leaves the Twins and travels towards King’s Landing.
Auxiliary Character Application
- Name and House: Eamon “the Exile” Frey
- Age: 27
- Appearance: Eamon shares the common Frey look; brown hair and brown eyes, with light facial hair. However, years of stress resulting from his exile from his homeland has aged him beyond his years — worry lines surround his eyes, and his brows are nearly always furrowed. Unlike his Lordly cousin, Eamon clearly does take after Forrest Frey’s martial legacy — being well-built from years training with swords and armor. Despite his status in exile, Eamon remains proud of his heritage and station. He spends gold freely on clothes, jewelry, horses, and other objects of luxury befitting a noble, and a brooch emblazoned with the sigil of House Frey is always visible on his body: a reminder of what he has been forced away from.
- Gifts: Duelist
- Skills: Swords, Tactician, Defender
- Talents: Hunting, Swimming, Cyvasse
- Negative Traits: N/A
- Starting Titles: Scion of House Frey
- Starting Location: With the household of House Lannister of Lannisport
Auxiliary Character Timeline
- 177 AC: Benfrey Rivers, illegitimate son of Bertram Frey, is born.
- 180 AC: Eamon Frey, son of Bertram Frey and Darla Haigh, is born.
- 186 AC: Eamon begins to squire for Symond Frey, his uncle and heir to the Twins.
- 194 AC: Eamon excels at swordplay, and begins to undergo more strenuous and personal training with his Uncle.
- 198 AC: Eamon leads a group of Frey knights in battling and capturing a group of bandits along the Frey Plains. For this, he is knighted by Symond.
- 200 AC: Symond drowns in the Green Fork after a freak riding accident. Eamon is greatly affected by the death of his mentor.
- 203 AC: Frey Regency Crisis
- Despite Eamon being Bertram’s son, Bertram almost does not view Eamon as his own. Bertram sees Eamon’s close relationship to the late Symond as evidence of Eamon being untrustworthy, and does not entrust Eamon with his plot to seize control of the regency — and subsequently the Lordship of the Crossing.
- As Freys begin to die every week or two, Eamon is terrified alongside the rest of his family. He is sent to Haigh Hill for a few months — ostensibly to keep him safe from the chaos of the Twins.
- Black Benfrey and Bertram are subsequently arrested and interrogated. Neither give any inclination that Eamon has been involved in their plans, but Addam is nevertheless suspicious of him.
- Eamon returns to the Twins and witnesses the execution of his half-brother and his father. He swears to Addam of having no part in his father’s treason — but Addam seems unperturbed. The next day, Eamon departs from the Twins and rides West.
- Addam’s prior suspicions about Eamon seem to have been confirmed, and he dispatches a dozen Frey guards to ride after Eamon, but the guards do not catch Eamon before Eamon enters Mallister lands. The guards don’t cross into Mallister lands, not wishing to spark a bigger incident.
- 203 AC: Eamon is welcomed in the household of Seagard, remaining there briefly to catch his breath and prepare himself for the journey.
- 204 AC: Eamon departs from Seagard onboard a trading ship, and sails south. The ship docks in Lannisport, and he disembarks. With his inheritance from his father and his own personal allowance, he has a decent amount of gold — and finds lodgings in a high-brow inn.
- 205 AC: Attending a social event in Lannisport, Eamon meets Tyshara Lannister. The two court briefly.
- 206 AC: Eamon and Tyshara marry.
- 207 AC: Eamon reluctantly tags along with the Lannisters towards King’s Landing — hoping to stay far away from his cousin, who has doubtlessly received word of his marriage to a Lannister and wishes to see Eamon arrested.
Archetype NPCs
- Ser Lyle Nayland — Swords
- Ser Lyle Nayland is Addam’s sworn sword, and Addam’s good-uncle through his late sister’s marriage to Lyonel Frey. Lyle was the one who saved Addam and Marissa during the burning of the Lord’s chambers, and earned Addam’s respect and loyalty for this action. He remains one of the few individuals who Addam legitimately trusts and, as Addam’s protector, is an ever present shadow behind Addam.
- Ser Olyvar Charlton — Tactician
- Ser Olyvar Charlton is another one of Addam’s close confidantes. Olyvar was close to Addam’s father Symond, and has subsequently joined up with Addam’s entourage. Olyvar’s specialty lies in command, and he has been entrusted as Addam’s primary battlefield commander — given Addam’s own rather lacking personal ability in command.

2023.05.30 22:33 Bergmaniac The Changes in Emond's Field
Something that struck me when rereading some bits of Winter's Heart recently were the massive changes to Emond's Field in terms of economic development, demonstrated by the new houses and other structures, which happened in a very short time.
When Perrin goes back to Emond's Field, the village is basically the same as he left it. A backwater village where the locals mostly farm tabac and sheep, houses aren't particularly big, all roofs are thatched except Winespring Inn's, the bridge in the middle of the village is wooden, there isn't anything resembling industry, no shops or inns are mentioned outside of the Winespring Inn, etc. But when Egwene and Elayne visit it in T'A'R less than 8 months later, Emond's Field has become a town, and a prosperious one to boot. Here is how Elayne describe it:
She hoped Rand could still love Emond’s Field, but it was no longer the village where he and Egwene had grown up. There were no people, here in the World of Dreams, yet clearly Emond’s Field was a considerable town now, a prosperous town, with nearly one house in three made of well-dressed stone, some of three stories, and more roofed with tiles in every hue of the rainbow than with thatch. Some streets were paved with smooth well-fitted stone, new and unworn as yet, and there was even a thick stone wall going up around the town, with towers and iron-plated gates that would have suited a Borderland town. Outside the walls there were gristmills and sawmills, an iron foundry and large workshops for weavers of both woolens and carpets, and within were shops run by furniture makers, potters, seamstresses, cutlers, and gold-and silversmiths, many as fine as could be seen in Caemlyn, though some of the styles seemed to be from Arad Doman or Tarabon.
Even with the influx of refugees from Arad Doman and elsewhere these massive changes really stretch plausibility for me. Building all these new structures takes a lot of time, people and resources. And it really doesn't seem to make economic sense. How would all these new stores and businesses get enough customers? Refugees rarely have all that money, and for the ones who have it makes more sense to move to Baerlon. Same for the artisans skilled in trades for which a backwater village doesn't provide nearly enough customers, like goldsmiths or furniture makers.
Sure, Emond's Field's economy growing pretty rapidly due to the influx of skilled refugees makes sense, especially since there is a hint in the LoC prologue that some of them discovered iron and gold deposits in the mountains nearby pretty soon after the Trollocs were defeated, but not this quickly. It even has paved streets now.
Sure, you can say "Ta'veren at worK", but Perrin wasn't even there during most of the period of explosive growth.

Avila Energy: A Special Situation Investment with Potential for a 1450% Return Avila Energy: A Special Situation Investment with Potential for a 1450% Return
Penny Queen pick 05.29.2023
TL:DR Avila is a profitable oil and gas company in Canada with preferred, North American rights to the Ener-Twin consumer power plants. This clean technology is projected to generate gross sales of up to $25 million in 2024. Avila has entered into a business combination agreement to uplist to the Nasdaq through the $INAQ SPAC. I place the value of Avila around 30 cents US without the SPAC. Completion of the SPAC could put the share value at 85 cents US.
Because I see the company as being undervalued, and because Avila would also have to pay a penalty to break the agreement, I see this special situation as less risky at this price point. As a reminder, the PQTF peak gains on the prior three special situation stocks have been 146%, 889% and 1370%, but had major issues that if played incorrectly, could have cost people a lot of money. As always, prior performance is not indicative of future performance. I do have a position and intend to do more purchasing and will continue to re-evaluate. As always trading is risky, this is not advice and I am not a financial advisor.
I have done my best to represent the facts as I know them, if you find any errors, please let me know:
[email protected] I have also created a subreddit and will have a channel available in the Penny Queen Discord. XO, PQ
Avila Energy (CA: VIK, OTC: PTRVF), an established Canadian oil and gas producer, is on the verge of a potentially transformative merger that could bring immense rewards for its shareholders. The company has agreed to combine with Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) Insight Acquisition (NYSE: INAQ).
The proposed transaction, as detailed at the link below, will allow for Avila to up-list onto the Nasdaq, enhance its ongoing carbon-neutral business strategy, and further strengthen the capitalization of the company with an expected combined entity market cap of over $190 Million.
This article will discuss the specifics of the deal, Avila's potential to diversify its revenue stream, and how it presents a rare special situation investment opportunity that could potentially lead to a total return of 1450%.
A Breakdown of the Deal
The Avila and Insight Acquisition merger is a complex one, but is potentially extremely lucrative for existing Avila shareholders. Under the agreement, Insight will continue from the State of Delaware to the Province of Alberta and acquire Avila in an amalgamation pursuant to a court-approved plan of arrangement under Alberta law.
According to the agreement, the fully diluted common shares of Avila, currently numbering 150,540,414, will be exchanged for 12,580,000 common shares of Insight Acquisition. This exchange ratio translates to about 11.97 shares of Avila for each share of Insight Acquisition.
Avila shareholders will own the following interest in the post-closing combined company:
100% Redemption (Proceeds retained from trust of US$ 1,250,000) 67.2% by Avila's shareholders;
50% Redemption (Proceeds retained from trust of US$15,781,215) 62.4% by Avila's shareholders;
0% Redemption (Proceeds retained from trust of US$29,062,430) 57.9% by Avila's shareholders.
At present, Avila shares trade at USD $0.0588 (5.88 cents), while Insight Acquisition shares trade at USD $10.23. However, given the merger and based on the exchange ratio, the post-merger price for each Avila share is projected to rise to around $0.855. This implies a staggering potential increase of up to 1450% for Avila shareholders, and forms the basis of the arbitrage opportunity that Avila presents as a special situation investment.
Avila Energy and Its Future
Looking beyond the merger, Avila Energy presents an interesting opportunity as a stand-alone company
Avila's strategic growth plan is divided into three phases:
- Upstream, where it plans to invest towards becoming a low-cost, carbon-neutral energy producer.
- Downstream, diversifying its revenue stream through the development of direct-to-consumer sales, aiming to boost demand, margins, and profitability.
- Providing customers with the option to convert to Avila’s developing hydrogen-fueled solutions, expected to be commercially available in 2027, as part of its Corporate Vision.
The company has a diversified and growing portfolio of 100%-owned and operated wells, three oil and natural gas processing facilities, 150,000 acres of leased exploration rights, and over 300 kms of gathering and sales pipelines.
The P&L displays robust numbers with $3.08 M in net revenue, more than 50% margins, with the majority of the revenue attributable to clean burning natural gas.
Avila currently has a 2P valuation of CAD $30.7 Million and a 1P valuation of CAD $7.8 Million with a current market cap of CAD $8.9 Million. As of year-end 2022, the company also had CAD $6.5 Million of cash, CAD $2.067 Million of Debt, and a positive shareholder equity of CAD $53.17 Million. These third-party audited reserves, as presented below from Deloitte, are a vast value relative to the company’s current market cap.

Clean Energy Future
Moreover, beyond being a traditional oil company, Avila is set to launch its “Vertically Integrated Energy Business, through its partnership with MTT. Supported by over a decade of R&D, including Avila's equity investment in Micro Turbine Technology (MTT), this venture promises to leverage innovative cleantech. Avila is aiming to deliver its first direct-to-consumer energy sales in North America in 2023. It also is targeting net-zero tier 3 (scope 3) CO2 emission energy for consumers by 2027.
The EnerTwin is a small, environmentally friendly power plant that simultaneously produces heat and electricity using the smallest gas turbine in the world. It runs on natural gas, LPG, biomethane, and hydrogen mixes, and thereby facilitates the energy transition to a low-carbon future in buildings.
Avila Energy says it has purchased a license for the manufacturing and marketing of the EnerTwin in the North American market. Beginning in 2026, Avila plans to sell 50,000 EnerTwin systems in North America as part of an integrated offering that also includes the provision of energy to their end customers.
To achieve this goal, the company has laid out the following timeline:
1) 2nd quarter of 2023 the preparation and filing of the application for the Canadian Standards Association (“CSA”) and Underwriter Laboratories (“UL”) Certifications for the EnerTwin in North America, based on past applications for CSA approval of KIWA certified equipment. The Company has estimated that this process is anticipated to 10-12 months in duration. 1st half of 2023 the commencement of pre-sales and servicing of the EnerTwin that are conditional on the Company attaining CSA and UL approval. In the event that the CSA and UL approval is not attained, the sales would be refunded to customers.
2) The development of the Company’s manufacturing of the EnerTwin, including the assembly or 3rd part manufactured subassemblies and the final testing prior to shipping to the customer. The ramp up of this manufacturing facility is to be completed in parallel to the CSA approval, with the first 100 installations being demonstration installations to be replace by CSA approved equipment within targeted markets in North America utilizing the EnerTwin as KIWA Certified equipment.
3) Initial contracts are anticipated to be executed 3 months after receiving CSA Certification.
The Company’s Vertically Integrated Energy Business is based on the following assumptions:
a) Power, Heat, Cooling and Daily Transportation in one invoice;
b) Reduce Consumers Carbon footprint by 40% and save the consumer money;
c) Mitigates concern for brownouts and protection from increasing transmission fees;
d) Fixed Contract plus only an annual inflation adjustment; and
e) Capacity to transition to Hydrogen in the future.
The Company’s long-term goal is to allocate a portion of its natural gas production to its newly acquired customers as a source of fuel with the cost of energy being billed to the customer at a fixed price plus an annual inflation rate adjustment. The Company’s strategy is to include the delivery of fuel and the maintenance, under long-term contracts that offers price stability. The Company plans to continue to still sell their current suite of customers in addition to the newly acquired customers from the Vertically Integrated Business.
The Company assumes early market development will qualify for government subsidies both in Canada and the United States as an efficient upgrade and or substitute for current heating and cooling. For example, the Company anticipates that the EnerTwin will qualify under the existing Canadian Greener Homes Program which will offer rebates on eligible home retrofits.
Conclusion: A Rare Opportunity
Special situation investments like Avila's proposed SPAC up listing do not come often. They offer a chance for significant potential returns but are also complex and require a deep understanding of the specifics of the deal. For Avila shareholders, the potential upside of 1450% presents a remarkable opportunity. However, potential investors should conduct their own research and due diligence or consult with a financial advisor before making any decisions. With Avila's strong business foundation, ambitious future plans, and the exciting prospect of itsup listing through the merger with Insight Acquisition, the future indeed looks bright.

100% Redemption (Proceeds retained from trust of US$ 1,250,000) 67.2% by Avila's shareholders;
50% Redemption (Proceeds retained from trust of US$15,781,215) 62.4% by Avila's shareholders;

The Company’s Vertically Integrated Energy Business is based on the following assumptions:
a) Power, Heat, Cooling and Daily Transportation in one invoice;
b) Reduce Consumers Carbon footprint by 40% and save the consumer money;
c) Mitigates concern for brownouts and protection from increasing transmission fees;
d) Fixed Contract plus only an annual inflation adjustment; and
e) Capacity to transition to Hydrogen in the future.

2023.05.30 20:45 ShlomiRex NES Test LDA - I think the test ROM is wrong
TL;DR: How many read memory access does the CPU do for the LDA $6d, X ? In the test suite it says 4, however it should be 3: opcode, operand, RAM[___] where A register will load the value of RAM[___].
-------------------
As suggested in my previous post:
https://www.reddit.com/EmuDev/comments/13u6p1g/any_nes_cpu_tests_that_i_can_compare_output_of_my/ I use the following testing suite:
https://github.com/TomHarte/ProcessorTests/tree/main/nes6502 I got to the LDA instruction, opcode: 0xB5
For all the 10,000 tests in the 0xB5 testing suite:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/TomHarte/ProcessorTests/main/nes6502/v1/b5.json - I pass the CPU registers tests, my CPU registers are the same like in the test (i.e. in the json, the key is 'final')
- I pass the RAM test, my memory space is the same as the test
Here is the test I fail on (3 byte instruction):
b5 6d 7e
which is
LDA $6d, X
However I fail on 'cycles' test (which keeps track of memory access for 1 CPU instruction execution):
[here the first value is address (27808 for example), the second value is the value of the memory (181), the third value is the type of memory access: read/write]
"cycles": [ [ 27808, 181, "read" ], [ 27809, 109, "read" ], [ 109, 139, "read" ], [ 225, 49, "read" ] ]
In my testing code I keep track of memory access per test run, here is mine:
[ [ 27808, 181, "read" ], [ 27809, 109, "read" ], [ 225, 49, "read" ] ]
i.e. I don't read memory at address 109 (which has the value 139). I'm missing 1 memory read.
Explanation for my memory access:
- The first read is the opcode (so the CPU can decode the instruction)
- The second read is the operand needed for the 0xB5 instruction
- The third read is what the value of 'A' register should be
Where the last one can be calculated like so:
RAM[$6d+X] = RAM[$6d+0x7d] = RAM[$00E1] = RAM[225] = 49 = 0x31
Which is correct, since in the test, the 'final', the A register is 49 (and it started at 156).
So basically we have 3 reads: opcode, operand and the RAM at the address. Why is the test have 4 reads? Here is the full test that I'm talking about (which has the X value):
{ "name": "b5 6d 7e", "initial": { "pc": 27808, "s": 113, "a": 156, "x": 116, "y": 192, "p": 233, "ram": [ [ 27808, 181 ], [ 27809, 109 ], [ 27810, 126 ], [ 109, 139 ], [ 225, 49 ] ] }, "final": { "pc": 27810, "s": 113, "a": 49, "x": 116, "y": 192, "p": 105, "ram": [ [ 109, 139 ], [ 225, 49 ], [ 27808, 181 ], [ 27809, 109 ], [ 27810, 126 ] ] }, "cycles": [ [ 27808, 181, "read" ], [ 27809, 109, "read" ], [ 109, 139, "read" ], [ 225, 49, "read" ] ] }
Like I saied before I pass all 10,000 tests for the 0xB5 opcode without the cycle section, which begs the question, is the cycle test incorrect?

2023.05.30 20:36 horsebycommittee Federal Loan Pause Ending / Debt Ceiling Negotiation Megathread
We've had quite a few posts here in the past week on this topic, mostly linking to clickbait or fearmongering without explaining what's actually going on. I will attempt to do that here.
BLUF: Nothing is really changing. Whatever your opinion of House GOP members, they're not looking to make any significant changes to the loan pause right now.
What is the loan pause?
In March 2020, as Covid-19 prevention and relief measures were being implemented, the Trump Administration announced that all student loans held by the government (which were: all Direct Loans, about 10% of the FFEL loans that existed at the time, and some Perkins loans that had defaulted) would temporarily have their interest rates set to 0% and no payments would be required. Even though no payments are required, this time still counts as progress toward the income-driven repayment forgiveness programs and (if the borrower has eligible public service employment) toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness. This program is known as the "loan pause" or "pandemic forbearance" and Congress followed suit a week later by enacting identical relief in the CARES Act. More details are
here.
When does the loan pause end?
The original pause was scheduled to end after just a few months, but the Trump and Biden Administrations have extended it several times. The most recent extension is set to end 60 days after the Supreme Court resolves the challenges to the Biden Administration's debt relief plan, which will forgive up to $20K of federal student loan debt for most borrowers. (We have
a separate series of megathreads tracking that litigation.) If the Court doesn't resolve the challenges by June 30, 2023, then the pause will end 60 days later on August 29, 2023.
What is the debt ceiling?
Many years ago, Congress enacted a limit on how much debt the federal government could have at any one time. Subsequent Congresses have generally continued to appropriate more money for federal programs than is covered by revenues (mostly taxes) and the difference is made up by new borrowing. Congress has, many times, increased or temporarily suspended the debt limit to account for this increase in borrowing so that the government has always been able to pay its bills, either from revenue or with borrowed money. (Is this a good or bad thing? Consult a macroeconomist in your area.) But, because exceeding the debt ceiling would probably have significant negative impacts on the US government and economy, some members of Congress have sought to use the debt ceiling as a negotiating chit -- refusing to enact legislation raising the limit unless they get concessions in other areas they care about. This is one of those times -- the GOP-led House has refused to rise the debt ceiling unless the Democratic-led Senate and President Biden agree to other policy items.
How does this impact the loan pause?
Barely, if at all. One of the items that House GOP leaders have put into their list of negotiating demands (styled the
Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 (pdf) is Section 271, requiring that the student loan pause end "Sixty days after June 30, 2023" and prohibiting further extensions. But this is already the date the pause was set to end (actually it's
later than the pause would originally end, if the Supreme Court issues its decisions sooner than June 30) and the Biden Administration has indicated for several months that another extension wasn't likely to happen anyway.
It's unlikely that this section of the Fiscal Responsibility Act, if it becomes law, will change anything for borrowers. And if it does, it will be to
extend the loan pause by a few extra days, to August 29. Nothing in the draft legislation seeks to claw back benefits that borrowers have already gained -- there is nothing about retroactively adding interest, undoing progress toward PSLF and IDR forgiveness, or modifying the IDR plans. The debt relief plan is not mentioned either -- the House is leaving that for the President and Supreme Court to handle, at the moment.
When the pause ends, when will I have to actually pay?
Most experts I see are saying that bills will be generated once the pause ends and then payment will be due 3-4 weeks after the bill-send date. So that means you'll likely need to begin paying in late September or early October.
Do I have to recertify my income-driven repayment plan amount?
Not yet. Unless you recertified your income, consolidated your loans, or changed to a different repayment plan during the loan pause, then when the pause ends, you'll be put back on the repayment plan you had been on with the same minimum payment you had on March 13, 2020. Your next income recertification will then be due
no sooner than six months after the pause ends, which would be early 2024.
I've been saving up for a lump-sum payment, when should I make it?
Loan will be zero-interest until the pause ends, which will be sometime between July 25 and August 29. (We'll know 60 days in advance what the exact date will be and we'll also know whether the debt relief plan is happening or not, so this ambiguity is not important right now.) Even though payments won't be due immediately, interest will resume when the pause ends. To maximize the benefit of your lump sum payment, send it 3-5 business days before the pause ends. (Though keep in mind that if you're pursuing PSLF or IDR forgiveness, then making a lump sum payment is probably not a good idea in the first place.)
Could the loan pause return in the event of a future emergency?
Yes. Section 271 of the current draft of the Fiscal Responsibility Act prohibits any further "
extensions" of the current pause, but does not say anything about the Executive Branch's power to issue similar relief in the future, should a new emergency warrant it.

2023.05.30 20:24 BackhandQ [NBA Finals Preview] - (WC #1) DEN Nuggets vs (EC #8) MIA Heat - Tale of the Tape
The Finals are here!
And it is a match-up that was on nobody's radar.
Here's a quick preview of how these teams match-up. Only looking at the Playoff stats till date. Throwing the Regular season out the window (just like the Miami Heat have done).
The Nuggets are heavy favourites, and rightfully so. Unfortunately for them, that's exactly how Miami likes it.
So, here we go!
First up, let's look at the Team Statistics.
- Denver has the edge in most categories, but when strictly looking at percentages, there is very little that overwhelmingly favours the Nuggets.
- Rebounding is a strong plus for the Nuggets. Their size can give the Heat some trouble. A lot of second chance points and easy points can get generated.
- Miami has a slight edge in defensive metrics, such as turnover rate and defensive rating. "Heat culture" is predicated on hard-nosed, resilient defense. That is what they will need to demonstrate vs Denver. Along with hitting 3's, that is going to be Miami's primary formula to overcome the Nuggets.
- Denver loves to get in and around the paint (3-10ft out), where approximately 29% of their shots come from. Dribble penetration, second only to the Pick and Roll, is their key offensive strategy. The likes of Murray, Brown, Gordon make a living with those cuts, drives and slashes. Managing that area of the court will be key for Miami.
Team Stat | DEN | MIA | Diff. |
FG% | .490 | .472 | DEN + .018 |
FT% | .815 | .804 | DEN + .011 |
3pt% | .386 | .390 | MIA + .004 |

TS% | .595 | .583 | DEN + .012 |
eFG% For | .559 | .548 | DEN + .011 |
eFG% Against | .530 | .530 | Tied |
Stocks Per Game (Stl +Blk) | 11.4 | 11.2 | DEN + 0.2 |
TOV% (opp. TO per 100 poss.) | 10.9% | 12.7% | MIA +1.8% |
Off. Rating | 121.0 | 116.3 | DEN + 4.7 |
Def. Rating | 112.4 | 111.9 | MIA + 0.5 |
Off. Reb % | 25.6% | 21.8% | DEN +3.8% |
Def. Reb % | 81.1% | 74.6% | DEN +6.5% |
0-3ft: FGA % / FG% | 19% / 69.3% | 21.4% / 70.6% | MIA takes more shots within this range, with a slightly better efficiency |
3-10ft: FGA % / FG% | 29% / 50% | 18.2% / 40.6% | DEN takes more shots within this range, with significantly better efficiency |
10-16ft: FGA % / FG% | 8.6% / 50% | 14.1% / 45% | MIA takes more shots within this range, but with a worse efficiency |
16-23ft: FGA % / FG% | 7.7% / 42.2% | 7.5% / 43.1% | Just about even, less than 1% edge to MIA in efficiency |
23+: FGA % / FG% | 35.6% / 38.6% | 38.9% / 39% | MIA takes more shots within this range, with a negligible edge in efficiency |
Next up, let's take a bit of a deeper dive into the Players and what sort of match-ups we'll see in the Finals.
- Both Coaches have basically set up a traditional 8-man playoff unit, with the occasional appearance by a deeper bench player. Coach Spo is more likely to tinker and offer minutes to guys like Cody Zeller and Highsmith. Whereas, Coach Malone will barely sniff at his deeper bench guys like DeAndre Jordan and Reggie Jackson.
- The potential return of Tyler Herro could have a huge impact on this series. We all know that Tyler can be instant offense. While he may lack defensively, the Heat do have enough to surround him with more than capable team defenders.
- Star player v Star player:
- The edge goes to Nikola Jokic. He has been the best player in these playoffs. Offensively, the show runs through him. He has his detractors defensively, but he's still a big body that can change shots and grab rebounds to clean things up. Who on Miami can stop him? It's going to have to be a team effort and special schemes drawn up by Coach Spo.
- On the other end, we have Jimmy Butler, a true, gritty, never say die leader of men. He epitomizes what a leader or a captain should be. He impacts both ends of the floor and commands respect. He's not a great jump shooter, but he'll often make them in the clutch. Denver has a lot of length and can throw many bodies at him. This is where guys like Vincent, Martin, Robinson and Lowry need to make their shots if Miami has any shot at winning this series. They've done it thus far, they got to keep at it.
Position | Players (DEN) | Players (MIA) | Who has the edge? |
Center | Nikola Jokic | Bam Adebayo | The Joker. Nuff' said. Bam will have his hands full. That said, Bam is good on his feet, and at the very least can make Jokic work for his points and rebounds. That's his only chance. Bam needs to be competitive and bring it each and every play. |
Forwards | Michael Porter Jr., B. Brown, J. Green, Aaron Gordon | Jimmy Butler, Caleb Martin, Max Strus, Kevin Love | The Forward group will be the make-or-break for the Heat in this series. If they can outdo Denver's group, then the Heat will have a strong chance to win. Jimmy is the best of the lot, but Denver's length and versatility could pose problems. I give the slight edge to the Nuggets, but as we saw vs Boston, the Heat forwards can absolutely ball when the chips are down. |
Guards | Jamal Murray, Caldwell-Pope, C. Braun | Kyle Lowry, Gabe Vincent, D. Robinson | Murray is the 3rd best player in this series. If he plays like it, Miami will be hard pressed to match his offensive punch. Lowry, Vincent and Robinson all had their moments vs Boston, but can they replicate that output? How healthy is Vincent, that is going to be a determining factor in Miami's guard play. KCP will be important for Denver. He proved vital vs LA and will be required to do so again. There is greater degree of trust and output with KCP vs Duncan Robinson. And that can be a X-factor punch that pushes Denver over the line. |
Deep Bench / Possible returns | Reggie Jackson, DeAndre Jordan | Tyler Herro, Cody Zeller, Haywood Highsmith | Miami's deeper options are more playable and fit into their system better than the Nuggets options. It's no wonder Coach Malone just doesn't play these guys. Add to the mix that Tyler Herro might be able to suit up - it could be a huge boost for the Heat. |
