2023.06.09 21:53 RuariWilliamson Is Celina Coming Up In Duel Links But With a New Dub Voice Actor? Interesting Social Media Post From Emily Bauer Recently
Hi everyone,
I hope you're all well. I thought this might be of interest to fellow dub viewers and Duel Links fans. Emily Bauer Jenness, the dub voice of ARC-V's Bracelet Girls and Ray Akaba, who has already reprised Zuzu Boyle for Duel Links, made an interesting post on her
Instagram recently. The post is in the link, but here's the text below:
"VOICE ACTORS AND ANIME FANS It’s been a really rough road for the voice over industry and for voice actors in the fight for our rights against AI technology.
I was recently asked to voice a character I originated, but I had to turn it down. Why? The company wants to retain the right to use my voice for AI technology. This means they can choose to use my voice at any time for anything. They can Clone my voice, use it for games, commercials, TV shows or movies, AI training…you name it, with no permission and no compensation. Effectively putting me out of a job.
If we knew 10 years ago what we know now, actors would have made very different choices about what rights they sign away. Well, here we are, and I am taking a stand.
I had hoped that instead of replacing me, this major company would put a clause in their contracts prohibiting AI use and protecting actors. This didn’t happen. I hope that we can work together again someday, with respect for the talent of voice actors and the art of voice acting.
Much love to my fans. Many thanks to the producers who give us fair contracts. And a big thank you to my fellow actors out there who have and continue to turn down auditions and unfair contracts."
Firstly, to address the obvious if you didn't click the link. The body of Emily's post doesn't specifically mention Yu-Gi-Oh!, Duel Links, Celina, KONAMI etc. so there's always a chance it's referring to someone else, and I certainly would hope that to be the case. However, the picture Emily used for the Instagram post IS a still of Celina. I'd say that makes it more likely than not the character she's referring to is therefore Celina and it's a Yu-Gi-Oh! project.
Which Yu-Gi-Oh! project would make the most sense? Duel Links. If you watched ARC-V you know Celina is a very logical next addition of an ARC-V character to Duel Links, and if we only get one more ARC-V character this year I think it will be her. We just got Yugo last month and he and Celina debuted around the same time in the show. Yes, some other characters did too but Yuri became more prominent much later on and for Dennis more than half of his cards are still anime only, so if they want to print more of them it makes sense to hold back on Dennis too. Yuri and Dennis make more sense as 2024 inclusions anyway IMO.
That being said, this doesn't mean Celina is coming to Duel Links very soon. We just got Shay's unlock in February and Yugo's last month. So we're probably waiting at least another few months for Celina. We still haven't had our GX slot for the year, and I think we'll get at least one more character each for ZEXAL, VRAINS and ARC-V this year, but we also don't know for definite what the September plans are. So far this year we haven't had a skipped month for an unlock. In previous years either April or May was skipped. We usually get 12-13 new characters a year, so if you think about it, if we get no skipped months this year (including an unlock event in September instead of a new world) we'd still have the same amount of new characters.
Plus, to bring things back to Celina. As someone who has interviewed cast members that worked on Duel Links, both those reprising roles and new VA's taking on roles, they usually record at least a few months in advance of a character being added. I'm sure they record sooner in Japan than the dub does as well, but they record a few months in advance for the dub. A couple I remember off the top of my head are Justin Badger recording for Antinomy in April/May 2020, who was added to DL via a roaming event that July. Noah Benjamin recorded Yuma in June/July that year, who was then added of course with the ZEXAL World launch that September. So, even if Celina is recorded we might not see her in DL for a few months at least.
Of course, that also brings things back to Emily's post. She says: "I had hoped that instead of replacing me, this major company would put a clause in their contracts prohibiting AI use and protecting actors. This didn’t happen." It sounds like, whether this is Yu-Gi-Oh!/Celina or not, she knows she will be recast. Obviously I'm not privy to details, but it doesn't mean Celina or whatever role it is has been recorded yet, but it could mean Emily was informed she'd be recast. I don't know how long it is between a cast member being contacted to reprise/an agreement being reached etc and their recording, so that's why I said I don't know if the recording is done, but it sounds like Emily knows one way or another she was (or will be) recast.
I've mostly been looking at it from a Yu-Gi-Oh! and Celina perspective but I do have a lot of thoughts on what Emily said, both Yu-Gi-Oh! wise and looking at it from beyond YGO too. First of all, Celina's one of my favourite ARC-V characters and naturally I'd love to hear Emily reprise her for Duel Links. I'll always prefer to hear the original voices reprise and, while I'm not opposed to recasts when needed and understand they sometimes have to happen, I'd always prefer the original voice reprisals. No shade to the Duel Links recasts as a lot of them have been good though.
However, this is also very different if Celina is indeed being recast. For starters, we have an amazing number of characters in Duel Links (over 90 different unlocks I think at this point) and only around 10-15 recasts which is also amazing really. However, we know why very few of the recasts happened. We've only become privy to a few of them.
Cassandra Lee Morris choosing to decline reprising Yubel due to a videogame strike at the time. Eileen Stevens saying she decided to "segue out of" (move on from) non union work and become a Union VA and YGO, Pokémon etc are non-union.
Sean Schemmel had a rant about being recast as Bronk (later recast as Paradox too) but nothing about why he was recast. He might not know himself as apparently he wasn't even asked to reprise Bronk. Schemmel's a Union VA too so that could've been the reason he was recast. They could risk it once with Crowler, but had to do the weird "Dr Crowler- Dr Crowler" credit where the latter should be the VA's name. Nothing definitive but I think not even trying to get Schemmel again was probably a Union reason.
However, this with Emily would be a first as it's a VA telling us in advance that they might be recast rather than acknowledging why after the fact. Certainly interesting to think about it like that. Again, it might not be Yu-Gi-Oh!/Celina related, but I suspect it is since she used Celina as the picture for the post.
My thoughts on what Emily said though are this: I think it's a good thing Emily has come out and said this. Yes, I'll be disappointed if Celina's recast but I completely support her on this. The AI technology and what it can mean for voice acting shouldn't be taken lightly. I'm not a fan as it's no substitute for actual acting and I can't even imagine how the voice actors feel. The fact that a major company wanted to put a clause in Emily's contract, KONAMI or otherwise, saying that they could use the voice for AI use in the future, plus with no compensation, is crazy to me. If it's indeed KONAMI, I at least hope it was something the higher ups were pushing and not something voice director Darren Dunstan, also a major anime actor himself of course, and his team wanted. I can't imagine how a VA like Dunstan himself would be ok with it.
Emily also said: "I hope that we can work together again someday, with respect for the talent of voice actors and the art of voice acting." I think it's a great thing Emily's still open to working with the company despite them trying to put the AI clause in. Not everyone would be, let's be honest. Maybe if it's too late for Celina they could still try and get her back for Lulu and/or Rin, but who knows? Maybe if they haven't already recorded Celina with a new dub VA replacement Emily putting the post out there might've made KONAMI want to get her back after all. If they have already recorded a new VA with Celina it's probably too late though. Would be wasting money doing another recording session after already paying the new VA.
Whether it's indeed KONAMI or a different company, trying to put AI clauses in contracts is not a good look. IMO it reeks of companies trying to find another way to save money. As Emily said herself, she wouldn't be compensated and would effectively be put out a job. Whenever they'd need new Celina dialogue, they could just use the AI to generate it. It's NOT the same as a VA recording new lines. I'm glad a well known anime VA is calling it out and warning other voice actors and fans about it. The fact that a major company would want to do this is awful IMO.
Some of you might be thinking why has this come up now when Emily reprised Zuzu a couple of years ago for Duel Links? I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of how the VA negotiations work for Duel Links, but I think there's most likely different negotiations if the reprisals are far apart like a couple of years. If a VA is voicing a couple of roles in quick succession, maybe they can do one negotiation, but I don't know. I'm sure some think it, but no, I also doubt they get someone like Emily to record Zuzu/Celina/Lulu/Rin in one session and then hold onto dialogue recordings for many years like that. No, IMO it's more likely whenever they need a VA they reach out to them again. Plus, the sessions from the VA's I've interviewed were a few hours, like 2-4. Considering on lots of lines they're probably doing multiple takes to find the best one, I really don't think they're recording multiple characters in one session. Maybe if there's a quick turnaround where the same VA is voicing characters coming to Duel Links around the same time, or also adding new dialogue on older unlocks (see DM/DSOD characters), but I doubt they're sitting on recording sessions they won't use for years.
Plus, here's another way to look at it. I might be wrong as voice actors will know it better than me, but it feels like the issues with AI technology replacing voice acting have become a lot more talked about in the last year or year and a half. I think it most likely wasn't a clause when Emily was asked to reprise Zuzu, but was a new clause added for this year when she was asked to reprise Celina or whoever the character was. That's why Emily has done the post and used a picture of Celina. Like I said, if the character is Celina it most likely was for a Duel Links recording, and now that AI is more talked about it was added as a clause.
Like I've said, I completely support Emily's stance on this and think it's a terrible a major company would try putting an AI technology clause in. KONAMI or otherwise, but I suspect it is because Emily used Celina as the picture for her Instagram post.
From a fan perspective, I also felt it was important to give fellow dub fans a heads up about this. One, because the AI thing is becoming an issue that is concerning the voice actors we like. Two, if Celina's indeed being recast I know I'd rather know in advance rather than open the game when she's added and find out she has a new VA. IMO it definitely feels different opening the game and finding out there was a recast than knowing/expecting it in advance. For example, despite preferring Paradox to Bronk of Schemmel characters it certainly surprised me less seeing Paradox recast after Bronk was. So despite it being disappointing now, if it's indeed Celina Emily was referring to (she's the character pictured in her post after all) IMO it's better to expect a recast now then only find out when she's added.
If she's indeed recast, curious to see who Celina's new VA will be. I sympathise with them especially when we already know why Emily will be recast if it's indeed Celina her post is about. I'm sure they'll do their best but yeah, knowing why Emily might be recast certainly isn't nice and I fully support Emily on her stance and sympathise with her too. The AI thing should not be a clause in any VA's contract.
I wanted to do this post, not just because of Yu-Gi-Oh!, but because I think this is also bigger than Yu-Gi-Oh! AI technology is becoming a much bigger thing and a lot of voice actors are talking about it. If you're a fan of voice actors you've probably seen some talking about it, but this is the first I've seen of a major company actually trying to include it as a contract clause.
What do you think about Emily's post though? While she doesn't name the character, Duel Links, KONAMI etc her choice of picture for her post is Celina. Certainly makes it likely she's the referred to character IMO.

2023.06.09 16:56 Dead-Sync KeyForge in Connecticut - Winds of Exchange Prerelease!
| Attention Archons of CT: KeyForge is not just coming back, it's BEEN back! The Ethereal Lounge is a new LGS that opened a few months ago in Shelton, CT ( ~15min from Bridgeport, and ~20min from New Haven and Waterbury). Since their opening, I've been working with the store owners to run monthly KeyForge tournaments of various formats and sets, and we've been building our player base each time. (We also have casual KeyForge meets on many Thursdays, organized ad-hoc through the store's Discord server) We've run three monthly tournaments so far since the store's opening; new players have joined each time and there has been genuine excitement and interest building about this 'new game' they've discovered! Some veteran players have come out to see the return of OP in their area too. Our CT KeyForge community has been growing, and we couldn't be happier! June's tournament is special though: as it will be our Winds of Exchange Prerelease Event! Everyone participating will get one sealed Winds of Exchange deck, ahead of the set's retail release. Details are in the images below (text-only version beneath that). If you're in the Connecticut area, we hope to see you at this month's tournament (or a future one)! https://preview.redd.it/uhma7cm0205b1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=4e3da497508f77aba50a24e0db4d3017067dab51 Event Details Event Details: Sat. June 17, 2023, 12pm - 5pm ET - Sealed Archon Winds of Exchange Swiss
- $20 entry: Includes 1 Winds of Exchange KeyForge deck
- Prizes provided by Ghost Galaxy!
- Noon is a social hour: with "What's New in Winds of Exchange" and "Learn to Play KeyForge" sessions being offered at that time as well.
- Matches start at 1pm ET
- At Ethereal Lounge: 495 River Road, Shelton, CT 06614

Can't believe the girls are actually scared of Veronica coral and Julie scared to face her in an Elimination while the team spoke that they were going to keep Katie in the game because how weak she is they talk a big game but can't keep their words I also like an underdog story even though Katie was weak she was able to make the team win in the final and loved how she disappointed people when they thought she was gonna lose every time

2023.06.09 04:23 rheise311 Looking for suggestions on cycling destinations / routes on my (USA) summer road trip
I will have about a week on my own to leisurely make my way from Savannah, GA back home to Maine, and will have my road bike with me. I will likely take a route along the lines of:
Day 1: Savannah, GA to Charlotte, NC Day 2: Charlotte, NC to Norfolk, VA Day 3: Norfolk, VA to Yardley, PA Day 4: Yardley, PA to Hartford, CT Day 5: Hartford, CT to Portland, ME
I was thinking I'd try to get in rides in the Savannah area on Day 1 before I leave, and then something in the Winston-Salem and/or Raleigh-Durham area on Day 2, and along the Delaware coast (Dewey Beach area?) Day 3. I have ridden around Yardley before and like the area. I have not ridden in the Hartford / neighboring suburbs much, but have driven lots of it.
My question is, if I'm going along this route (ish) are there any must-ride areas for scenic / iconic / enjoyable rides? Please let me know any / all thoughts!

2023.06.08 23:23 Affectionate-Ad2081 The Case for Tim Duncan as the GOAT
I know what you're thinking: no way; there's no chance Tim Duncan is the GOAT. He's not even the best player of his generation you might say. You're thinking there's no way Tim Duncan belongs in the same category as MJ or LeBron. If you believe this, there are three things that you'll probably bring up as I make this argument.
- The Second Act: If you're the kind of person who rates players through spreadsheets, his career in the 2010s is statistically underwhelming.
- The Peak: You might say that Duncan never had a real peak where he was the most dominant player in the league on a daily basis, like Shaq.
- Greg Popovich: Duncan has always had Pop, arguably the greatest coach of all time in his corner.
I hear you, and I will address these later on in this post. First, let me address Duncan's stats and accolades.
Duncan's notable accolades from his NBA career are as follows:
- 5 Championships
- 15 All-Defensive Teams (8x First Team, 7x Second Team)
- 15 All Star selections
- 2 Regular Season MVP's
- 3 Finals MVP's
Duncan's 5 championships are more than Larry Bird or Wilt Chamberlain, his 15 All-Defensive selections are the most of anybody ever, his 15 All Star appearances are tied for 3rd all time, he has as many regular season MVP's as Kobe and Shaq combined and only MJ has more Finals MVP's.
Don't forget about his college accomplishments though, because remember: Duncan came out of Wake Forest after four years despite people like
Jerry West who said he could have been the number one overall pick had he left after his sophomore year. Duncan's accolades form his collegiate years:
- 3x NABC Defensive Player of the Year
- 2x ACC Player of the Year
- 2x consensus All-American
- 1997 Naismith Player of the Year
- Most rebounds in NCAA history.
These NBA and collegiate snapshots of his basketball career, should be enough to have him at the table of the GOAT conversation. You're not convinced yet, let's dig into some more numbers.
Here's where Duncan ranks all-time on some of the major statistical categories across his NBA career:
- Points: 16th
- Rebounds: 6th
- Blocks: 5th
- Steals: 158th
- Assists: 100th
These career totals, admittedly, are substantially less impressive than other players at his position, like Kevin Garnett (19th in points, 9th in rebounds, 18th in blocks, 18th in steals, 55th in assists), Karl Malone (3rd in points, 7th in rebounds, 70th in blocks, 12th in steals, 61st in assists) or Dirk Nowitzki (6th in points, 26th in rebounds, 53rd in blocks, 94th in steals, 155th in assists). And that's because you can't judge Tim Duncan's numbers like you can with most players. Imagine in 15 years if somebody said to you that Russell Westbrook was better than Steph Curry, citing how many PTS, AST, and REB Westbrook had. You'd laugh right? Because you know that numbers do not always tell the full story. It is impossible and irresponsible to discuss a player's ranking without mentioning the stats that exists, but by measuring players purely by their basketball reference page, you're leaving out context and the story in which those numbers were achieved. That context is what makes those numbers meaningful.
Such is the case with Tim Duncan, whose success and greatness transcends a box score. You can't judge Tim Duncan with numbers alone. The fact of the matter is, that if you ran a team and if you could pick from any NBA player that ever played the game, and your goal is to win, you would pick Tim Duncan.
Offensively, Duncan was dominant for his first ten years in the NBA. From '98 to '08, he averaged 21.6/11.8/3.1 while playing on one of the slowest teams in the league. In that span, the Spurs never ranked in the top half of the league for PACE. Adjusting his stats for PACE and looking at his stats per 100 possessions (31.2/17.1/4.5 with 3.5 BLK at 50.8 FG%), you're looking at a big man who was every bit as productive as any other offensive player in the league at the time.
You already know about his skillset. He was, after all, The Big Fundamental. He could pass out of double teams, face up and break down the defense with surprising agility, consistently knock down shots from the elbows, and torch any big man in the league with his array of moves in the post and suddenly imposing physicality. He could masterfully run a PnR with any guard with working limbs. And, of course, he had his signature bank shot, one of the most consistent and reliable shots of all time along with Kareem's Sky Hook and Dirk's fadeaway. Those skills never deteriorated throughout his career, except perhaps his last year.
This is where I want to attack the 2nd idea that his second act was unexceptional. His scoring numbers dipped in last 8 years, where he never averaged over 20 PPG. But, as the Spurs offense became more collaborative and free-flowing, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili shouldered more of that scoring burden as Duncan aged. Duncan's shot attempts fell, though he remained efficient. His skills hadn't waned; the Spurs just didn't need him to score 28 points every night. He retained his role as alpha dog during this stretch and contributed in other facets of the game. He could pick his spots, put his teammates in position to succeed, and save himself undue punishment and wear until is was needed. That's why in 2013, at the age of 36, he became the oldest player ever named to First Team All-NBA.
Duncan was never a prolific scorer, even in his prime. His game was never predicated on gawdy point totals like Malone or Dirk. With a different offense, he took fewer shots, and with fewer shots, he scored fewer points. In his last eight years, he remained a tremendous rebounder, was the go-to guy in crunch time, and the best defender, maybe ever. And this is what hurt his stats: the lack of flashy numbers for defense outside of blocks and steals. It's so hard to measure how much a drive was cut off because of his presence or a shot that was altered because of his contention. There are some metrics that attempt to measure this, like DRTG, Defensive Win Shares, and Defensive +/- , and while it is an inexact science, these measures do a fairly good job at assessing a player's impact on defense. Duncan's ranking in those metrics is unmatched:
- 95.6 DRT (3rd all time)
- 106.3 Defensive Win Shares (2nd all time)
- Defensive +/- (5th all time)
These metrics along with his All-Defensive selections serve as a testament to how Duncan thrived when the opponent had the ball. Legendary basketball writer, Jack McCalllum wrote this for SI in 2016 after Duncan retired:
"Duncan guarded centers and power forwards (sometimes even small forwards) with equal success. And as the NBA became more and more of a high pick-and-roll game, Duncan accepted the extra responsibility of getting involved at the perimeter, while never abandoning basket responsibility. Nobody was better than Duncan at being both an advance guard and the final fortress." FiveThirtyEight published
this article in 2016, where analyst Neil Paine calculated career WAR values that took into consideration defense and offense, and Tim Duncan led the WAR rankings, by a mile:
- Tim Duncan: 109.2
- KG: 96.2
- Karl Malone: 95.4
- David Robinson: 89.3
- Hakeem: 85.9
- LeBron: 82.8
- Kareem: 78
- Larry Bird: 74.2
- Shaq: 73
- Pippen: 72.7
What does all of this mean? It means that Duncan was a tremendous offensive player, despite the lack of volume, and one of if not the greatest defenders of all time. In short, his value as a two-way player is virtually unmatched in the last 50 years of NBA basketball.
Enough with the numbers. I want to talk about Duncan when it mattered the most: the playoffs. You can look at any numbers, read any article, or talk to any fan who paid attention to the game at the time, and you'll come to the same conclusion: Tim Duncan was a killer in the playoffs. All of his most memorable performances came in the postseason, and more often than not, came in crucial games when his team needed him most. From his near quadruple double in 2003 to close out the Nets and earn his 2nd championship to his 25 point first half against the Heat in Game 6 of the 2013 Finals ten years later, there was never a moment too big for Duncan. Here are his playoff numbers, significantly higher in almost every category than he his in the regular season:
- Points: 6th
- Rebounds: 3rd
- Blocks: 1st
- Steals: 46th
- Assists: 33rd
His '99 championship run was phenomenal, where he tore through a young Kevin Garnett, the newly assembled Kobe-Shaq Lakers, Rasheed Wallace's Trailblazers, and the Patrick Ewing-less 8-seed Knicks on his way to being named the second youngest Finals MVP ever. His 2002 campaign was incredibly underrated, as he carried one of the worst teams of his career to 60 wins and outplayed Shaq before being beat by the two-time champs. His 2003 season was his best season, and we'll get to that in a second. Just know that his running mate, David Robinson, averaged 8.5 PTS and 8 REB in the regular season and that Duncan's 5.9 win shares in that playoff run
remain the most of anybody in a single postseason. In the mid-to-late 2000s, Duncan's Spurs remained a fixture in the playoffs against competition like Dirk's Mavs, Nash's Suns, and Kobe's Lakers. He repaid them with two more titles in '05 and '07. He also gave us one of the clutch shots of his career in Game 1 against the Suns in 2008 with
this 3 point game-tying three pointer in OT.
Like I said earlier, in Game 6 of the 2013 Finals, at age 36, playing against Wade, Bosh, and apex LeBron on the road, Duncan put up 25 points in the first half. It would have gone down as an all-time series clinching performance had it not been for Ray Allen's
iconic game-tying 3-pointer. Looking for revenge in the 2014 Finals, Duncan set the tone in Game 1 with the classic 21/10 game, while shooting 9/10 from the field. As his final playoff hurrah in 2015, trying to defend the title at the ripe age of 38 in Game 7 of a first round series against the Clippers, Duncan reached all the way back and put up 27/11, sinking crucial free throws to tie it, before
Chris Paul hit a clutch, game-winning shot near the buzzer.
The same Tim Duncan giving the business to a 22-year-old Kevin Garnett, was the same Tim Duncan taking a 26-year-old DeAndre Jordan to school. Duncan was ready to win championships from the day he entered the league to the day he left. And I think that is why his peak is used against him as an argument for GOAT status. The fact that his championship window lasted his entire 19-year NBA career and that his teams were always somewhere between 50 and 60 wins meant that it's hard for any one of his seasons to stand out from the rest. And for some unfathomable reason, being consistently great is less of an accomplishment than being great for short stints.
Like I said, his 2003 season was his best, after leading his team to 60 wins and his 2nd consecutive MVP, Duncan eviscerated everything in his path as he tore through the playoffs. He upended the Suns, ended the Lakers 3-year reign as champions, and outdueled Dirk before absolutely torching the Nets in the finals. By the time he was holding the trophy, it was clear beyond a shadow of a doubt that Duncan was the league's best, most complete player.
Now, I'd be lying if I said that Duncan's peak was higher than Shaq's. But I also wouldn't feel comfortable saying that the difference between the two is great enough for me to lose sleep over. To me, the truth is that Shaq was so much more of a spectacle. To watch peak Shaq was an experience unlike anything else. To see someone of his size and stature move so powerfully and fluidly is still something of a miracle. To see Duncan at the peak of his powers was a lot like seeing him seven or eight years later. He was just a little faster, a bit stronger, and a touch quicker in his prime. But do aesthetics denote superiority? I'd say, no. And though Shaq in his prime was certainly a more dominant offensive player, there was never a time where he could match Duncan's abilities as a defender, leader, or teammate. The two are the antithesis of each other. Shaq loves fame; Duncan loathes it. Shaq would sometimes show up to training camp out of shape, often battle with his co-stars and finished his career having played for six different teams. Duncan took great care of his body, cemented himself as the cornerstone of his franchise, and is one of the most celebrated teammates in NBA history. Shaq left a little on the table. You can never say the same thing about Duncan. Shaq cared a little too much about what everyone thought of him, while Duncan couldn't have cared less.
Let's tackle the third criticism: that he always had Pop. To me, Pop is the greatest coach of all time, but he would be the first one to tell you that he wouldn't be here without Tim Duncan.
For one, Duncan can play any style of basketball, in any era. You want to go slow school, old-pace, dump it off to the big man down low, let him bang and be solid on defense? Titles. Remove the hand-checking and illegal defenses, increase scoring and start moving toward the perimeter? Titles. The league goes small ball, the pace explodes and shooting and ball movement is more important than anything? The largest margin of victory in NBA finals history.
Secondly, he can play with any team. Honestly, has any superstar done more with less? Jordan had Pippen his entire run and Rodman for the last half. Bird had McHale and Parish. Wilt had West and Hal Grier. Russell had Cousy, Jones, and Havlicek. Magic had Kareem and vice-versa. Kobe had Shaq and vice-versa. And LeBron has had Wade, Kyrie, and AD. Duncan's best teammates? Old David Robinson, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili, who combined for 5 Third Team All NBA appearances and 4 Second Team appearances during their time with Duncan. Parker and Ginobili are long shots for the HOF, and even though Robinson's in the HOF, he wasn't playing at a HOF level alongside Duncan.
Third, and most importantly, Duncan forged the culture of the Spurs. Pop was essential in acquiring players and reinforcing the culture that Tim wanted, but Duncan was truly the most vital component. The NBA is a star-driven league and finding a great player who hasn't gotten a coach fired is like finding a good Star Wars movie: they're few and far between. Not only did Duncan not get Pop fired, he let Pop coach him harder than any superstar ever. If Tim had ever thought to himself, "you know what I don't feel like getting my chops roasted in front of the whole team today because I didn't box out well in practice" he could have gone right to RC Buford, and Pop would have been gone - end of story. But Tim understood what Pop was about, and trusted him enough to be mentored in an unprecedented way. He set the example for his teammates, that no one is immune to criticism and that it's expected of everyone to leave their egos at the door.
In 2017, the Spurs SB Nation blog, Pounding the Rock, spoke to Sam Walker, author of "The Captain Class," a book which examines winning culture in team sports, from field hockey to rugby. In an exchange, Walker said this:
"[T]he book's main conclusion is that the only one factor that must be present in order to maintain greatness over a long period of time is the presence of a particular kind of selfless, relentless, independent-minded, publicity-averse, emotionally composed captain with strong communication skills. And that's Tim Duncan. Duncan was a pure example of the species." I love Pop, but I have to believe that Duncan was the catalyst that powered Pop to be what he is now. This isn't Belichick-Brady where you wonder who made who. Pop is the greatest coach of all time, because of Tim Duncan. If you want to take credit away from Duncan by saying he played for the best teams, you might be right, but only because he made them the best team. He gave up touches, let other guys hold the torch, put everyone around him in the best position to succeed, and he enjoyed it when they did.
When I said earlier that the thing that hurt Duncan's stats more than anything was a lack of defensive numbers, I lied. The thing that hurt Duncan's stats more than anything was the fact that he never gave a shit about stats or awards. Ever. He wanted his teams to succeed and he wanted to win. That's it. Just read about how his teammates talk about him:
"The best PF ever! Thanks for the memories old man. A great player and teammate." - Lamarcus Aldridge "Sometimes all you NEED to say is THANK YOU....To the BEST EXAMPLE of a Leader, Brother, Friend." - Bruce Brown "Even tho I knew it was coming, I'm still moved by the news. What a HUGE honor to have played with [Duncan] for 14 seasons! - Manu Ginobili I don't think there is a more beloved teammate than Tim Duncan. In the words of NBA commissioner Adam Silver,
"...his understated selflessness made him the ultimate teammate." Duncan was always the big brother. Correcting his teammates when they made mistakes and throwing his arms around their shoulders when things didn't go their way. He led in the most effective way possible, not with tweeting, bombastic words, or showy halftime speeches, but by example.
Of all the end-of-career farewell wishes, the one from his former teammate, Brent "Bones" Barry stuck out to me the most. He quoted Mark Twain, saying
"'To be good is noble, but to show others how to be good is nobler and no trouble'; for your brilliance TD, I am grateful. For your skills as a player I am in awe. And for your friendship I am honored." Milwaukee Bucks coach and former Spurs Assistant, Mike Budenholzer said to ESPN's Kevin Arnovitz in 2016:
"The magnitude of that, the number of people in this league who have enjoyed opportunity or found fortunate spots in the league, you can trace it back to this one guy -- to the way Timmy played ball and the way he conducted himself. The 'culture' is Timmy." The NBA is a league of superstars and dynasties - from Russell to Jordan, from Wilt to LeBron. We'll remember its history through its champions, and in the history of North American sports, no team has been as good for as long as the Spurs. San Antonio's success is completely unprecedented in the world of basketball. Aside from his lockout shortened sophomore season, Duncan won 50 or more games and qualified for the playoffs in every season of his NBA career. He finished his career with a win percentage of 71%, the highest of anyone, in any sport, ever. The Spurs run of success started in 1997, the year they drafted Duncan. Since then, he was the cornerstone, the engine of the franchise that has perpetually defined what winning culture looks like - in and outside of basketball.
And so I say again, if you could pick any NBA player from any era of basketball and your goal was to win, you would pick Tim Duncan. His abilities as a basketball player are what made him a superstar. But his consistency, willingness to be coached, love and support of his teammates, and humility are the things that make him transcendent.
I'll let Pop have the last word. This is what he said to the press after Duncan announced his retirement:
"Everybody always talks about who they'd like to eat dinner with, if you had one night and you could go to dinner or lunch with someone. Some people say Mother Teresa, Jesus, the Dalai Lama...I could honestly tell you, my dinner would be with Timmy. He is the most real, consistent, true person I've ever met in my life." submitted by

2023.06.08 23:19 AMETSFAN Democracy in England Cromwell's Commonwealth
While the death of King Charles I would inaugurate one political wave, the events following his death would create one with even greater intensity. After the death of Charles, the Grandees of the Army, led by Fairfax and Cromwell, quickly turned their eye to the situation in Ireland. The event which finally began the English Civil War was the Irish Rebellion. However, with the Civil War raging for years, the Irish Confederates would win. But, while the Irish were ought of English sights, they were not out of English mind. With the domestic situation handled, Ireland was quickly the main issue.
But, as Cromwell prepared to lead an invasion of Ireland, minor dissent within the New Model Army finally exploded. Sentiment for a more democratic society had rapidly increased within the NMA after the King’s death. Starting as a small mutiny at Bishopsgate, throughout the ranks of the Army, men refused to suppress their comrades who had risen in refusal to go to Ireland, unless the Leveller Program was adopted. Not even Commander-in-Chief of the New Model Army, Thomas Fairfax, could stop the movement. While he was still beloved by his men, they were ultimately dedicated to the cause. Deciding that he could no longer work with the gorwing radicalism, Fairfax made good on his threat to resign.
This would leave Oliver Cromwell next in line to take over Command of the New Model Army. Cromwell would hesitate to take this role, due to discomfort with the Levellers, he would agree for the sake of the Commonwealth. While John Lilburne would call for the soldiers to refuse compromise with Cromwell, who he now despised, the Army was much more receptive. Even as they rose in disobedience against him, the New Model Army was still, at heart, loyal to Cromwell. Thus, a compromise would be struck with great ease. Cromwell agreed to request the dissolution of the Rump Parliament, and reluctantly agreed to include universal manhood suffrage (with exceptions for Royalists, domestic staff, and those reliant on charity) along with electoral reform, under the condition that the former would not be necessarily permanent. In exchange, Cromwell requested total to his authority on an Irish campaign. Led by Colonel William Eyre, the heavy majority of the Agitators (representatives of the soldiers, and de-facto representatives of the Mutineers) would agree to this deal. Despite the protests of Lilburne, the New Model Army was restored to order, while those who aggressively opposed the compromise were destroyed at the failed Banbury Mutiny.
With the New Model Army settled down, Cromwell would execute the first part of this deal. Cromwell would take a company of soldiers to the outskirts of London and head to Parliament. There, Cromwell would speak before the Rump. While praising Parliament’s work going back to the days of King Charles, Cromwell would present the bill for parliamentary reform (equalizing the representation of constituencies, temporary near-universal suffrage, and changing the # of MPs to 400), and then tell the Parliament that the Army wished for them to dissolve after passing the reform bill.
While Cromwell felt assured by leaders of the Rump that they would follow through, the situation in Westminster would not reflect these assurances. But, after two weeks the Rump had not passed either bill and there were allegations of the Rump’s desire to not pass the bill. With the Army on edge, Cromwell would bring out the sledgehammer against the Rump. He would denounce the Rump for its methods and attack various members as being drunkards, tricksters, pimps, and cheaters. He would then send in soldiers into the Chamber, and force Parliament to adopt the Reform Bill. But, he would not let Parliament dissolve itself. Still white with rage, Cromwell would give the Rump one final message, declaring, “You are no Parliament, I say you are no Parliament; I will put an end to your sitting! You have sat too long for any good you have been doing. Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!” With that, Cromwell would disperse of the Rump. Although he had no official authority, Cromwell had destroyed the Rump for good & begun the election campaign.
With their electoral program implemented, the Levellers appear to have momentum in the new elections. Their first and foremost policy is a call for the permanent implementation of the temporarily implemented
nearly universal manhood suffrage. They also support the total concentration of power within Parliament, with Parliament being given authority to protect the interests of England geopolitically and various forms of English liberty. With the idea of
“freeborn rights” at the centerpiece of their campaign, the Levellers call for a wide-ranging platform including full equality before the law, total religious freedom (although with a ban on Catholics in office), a right to remain silent, abolishment of debt prisons, reduction of the death penalty, a ban on all military conscription, the ending of forced tithes, and abolishment of the Anglican Church, and absolute free trade. There are also voices calling for the lowering of taxation (with a presumed lowering of spending, potentially affecting Army pensions) and a ban on military officers serving in Parliament, but they are opposed by Leveller Army officers, dubbed Agitators.
Even though the Grandees of the New Model Army were shocked by the one-two punch of the Leveller Mutiny and the resignation of Thomas Fairfax, they still retain great loyalty among their ranks. Although there are numerous disagreements about the nature of reforms within the faction, they are united by loyalty to
Oliver Cromwell. Although the success of the Leveller Mutiny has caused those who favor the Grandees to pipe down on the issue, they still, by in-large support limited suffrage with those who hold property having the right to vote. There is also a general agreement on the need for legal, political, educational, and religious reforms, but differences in scope. The Independents of the Grandee faction focus on a call for religious toleration while calling for the moral regeneration of England. Inspired by Sir Matthew Hale, the Independents call for the reformation of the legal system, along with a reduction, but not abolition in tithes. However, their signature policy is one put forward by John Lambert, called the
Instrument of Government, calling for a new Government based on the Separation of Powers, with an Executive, Cabinet, and Legislature designed to counterbalance each other. Meanwhile, another radical faction called the 5th Monarchists is led by Major-General Thomas Harrison, who gained fame for being Cromwell’s deputy in the Dissolution of the Rump. The 5th Monarchists are defined by their belief in the necessity of the establishment of a theocratic government, with their name coming from a prophecy in the Book of Daniel about four kingdoms that would precede the “
Kingdom of God.” In the eyes of the 5th Monarchists, the Babylonian, Persian, Greek, and Roman (including the Papacy) Kingdoms were the 4 Kingdoms, and the execution of King Charles would usher in the Kingdom of God. Thus, the policies of the 5th Monarchists would be designed to set up a world ready for the return. They call for abolishing the current legal system in favor of making Biblical Law the common law, complete abolishing of tithes, expansive relief for the poor, restrictions on religious freedom on Catholics, abolition of Parliamentary Democracy in favor of the establishment of a new
Assembly of 70, filled with the godly. Last, but not least, there was a final faction of the Grandees, but one that is surrounded by mystery and doubts. Although it is by no means official, there are whispers of a so-called King Party within the Grandees who favor the
restoration of the House of Stuart, and placing Charles I’s son, Charles II, on the throne of the 3 Kingdoms with certain regulations. These men are those who are presumed to be most horrified by the success of the Leveller Mutiny and the mass expansion of rights. Although no candidate for office would ever publicly call for it, the movement to restore the King to stop ‘radicals’ is rumored to have the support of old Parliamentarian commanders such as the Earl of Manchester and William Waller, and, most shockingly, former Commander-in-Chief of the New Model Army Thomas Fairfax.
While the Levellers and Grandees would be the main parties, a new movement would rise from the shadows of the Civil War. Led by Gerrard Winstanley and William Everard, a group called the “True Levellers” or Diggers, would come into fruition with the publication of
The New Law of Righteousness. While the main Levellers would ardently deny that they planned to redistribute wealth, the Diggers would proudly wear this label. Winstanley and Everard would call for the total and complete
common ownership of land, with equal profits from the land, along with a total redistribution of wealth. Winstanley would also call for the abolition of private property (except for housing and basic goods). The Diggers would also call for the abolition of bartering, instead saying that the profit everyone earned would be good enough. Winstanley would also call for environmental protection along free public health insurance & education. Finally, despite some within the party advocating a relaxation of moral standards, Winstanley has remained devoted to Puritan ideals, but Everard is rumored to be sympathetic to such causes.

2023.06.08 22:23 mel_yup Aesthetically challenging case: implant on #9 with gummy smile. Opinions wanted!
TLDR: I need help deciding on re-treatment vs extraction and implant on tooth #9. I've seen multiple specialists, and they all say different things. You can see my gums when I smile, so this is a very aesthetically challenging case and I want to make sure I'm making the best choice.
About me:
- 28 year old female
- No drinking
- No cigarette smoking (used to recreationally use marijuana between 2016-2020).
- Gums do show with smile
- Normally quite healthy, however as of Jan '23 I've been experiencing health issues (gut and nervous system disregulation). Have been full-time focusing on getting healthy (and have made progress thankfully) since then, but not fully back to normal yet. I did experience some trama last year, so I'm sure that may have contributed, but to what extend I don't know.
- I have some issues with methylation and therefore am leaning away from titanium implants. Esp if I need to replace tooth #10 later down the road, I don't want the two metals together.
- I work on camera a lot for my job - aesthetics is extremely important for my role.
History:
- 2004: trauma to tooth #9 (hit it on bathroom sink and chipped it).
- 2017: blister appeared between #9 and #10 at the top of the gums (right under the nose) . No pain or sensitivity, but I was instructed to get root canals. So, an Endo treated #9 and #10 with root canals and also did an apicoectomy on #10.
- 2019: the root canal treated tooth was turning dark so I decided to get veneers. My cosmetic dentist referred me to another Endo to do internal bleaching on #9 prior to getting my veneers. I also got crown lengthening by a Perio.
- 2020: veneers were finalized (10 total, from tooth #4 - #13).
- 2021: I noticed a blister appear about 1-ish mm above gum margin on tooth #9. It was quite large, and pressing on it oozed puss. I saw a dentist who explained that I have to get an implant due to a hole (later I learned this is called an external resorption).
- 2023: I'm not proud of this (please no shaming), but I didn't seek another opinion until this year. For context - I'm deathly afraid of dental work. (for example, it took me 1.5 years to go through the veneer process, which is normally 2-4 weeks for others). I've since come to learn I'm neurodivergent and have sensory issues, so I'm sure this plays into my fears. But good news, the blister has reduced dramatically and is very tiny. I don't have pain, but rather mild discomfort and "off" feeling in the area (though, this could be from the previous treatment as well).
Exam findings:
- At some point after internal bleaching on #9, the backing of the root canal came off. So, essentially bacteria has been getting into #9 (it's leaking slightly when pressing on the root canal filling that's still there). The rest of the root canal remains in good condition, but I essentially have a bad cavity in the tooth.
- CT scan shows tooth #9 resorption meets the root canal space with little room in between. Essentially, the external resorption and re-infected root canal are close to touching (separated by about 1mm).
- CT also shows tooth #11 has some minor bone loss - whether that is from the treatment on #10 or from braces, who knows.
Treatments recommended:
Endo A:
- Confident they can re-treat the root canal and fill the external resorption (with assistance from Perio A in the same building to cautiously lift the gum to clean out and fill the resorption).
- MTA filling for resorption and gutta percha for root canal re-treatment.
- Microscope and dental dam used, but no GentleWave, ozone, or PRF.
- Doesn't think I should touch #10 at all if not causing me pain as it looked fine on the CT.
Perio A:
- Doesn't think I'm a candidate for immediate implant and that I should do extraction alone with gym graft and bone graft, then place implant in a few months to allow for bone growth.
- Trusts Endo A retreatment plan working to try and save the tooth (per above plan).
- No ozone, PRF, or ceramic implants. Just titanium implants.
Endo B:
- Skeptical of re-treatment due to the structural integrity of the tooth. They said it's possible but not a high success rate, so they referred me to a Perio to see about implant.
- If doing implant, they recommend re-treating the apicoectomy of tooth #10 to ensure success (and apparently they think it was filled with mercury too).
Perio B:
- Recommends extraction and immediate implant. However, they said the tooth could break when doing the extraction and in that case they would let me heal for a few months before going back and doing the implant. Prefers titanium but has also had good success with two-piece ceramic.
- Skeptical of retreatment - it may buy me time (if it works) but I shouldn't bite into anything or put pressure on it and cross my fingers. They didn't seem to think it was an issue for Perio A to flap open the gum for Endo A to treat the resorption - doesn't think it will impact implant later since they'll be doing a gum graft.
- Bigger fan of titanium for durability, but says that my gums are quite thin and therefore ceramic might be better for me.
- Yes on PRF, ozone, and two-piece ceramic implants, as well as titanium implants.
Perio C:
- Recommends partial extraction therapy and immediate titanium implant.
- Very against doing retreatment and lifting the gum to treat the resorption (even if by a Perio) because it will make my gum recede.
- Yes on PRF, ozone, two-piece ceramic and titanium implants. However, they are against doing ceramic implant for my case because of the probability of the gums receding as well - they said there would be nothing that they could do once this happens and it could be extreme. They said this is in part because ceramic isn't put in as deep to the bone?
Oral Surgeon:
- Recommends extraction and immediate implant of #9, with bone graft and gum graft.
- Also says tooth #10 has a small craze line and apical defect? No one else has mentioned this, though. Recommends retreating apico and cleaning it up to ensure implant success.
- Recommends titanium, but does one-piece ceramic as well. No ozone or PRF. Would do bone graft and gum graft on same day with immediate implant.
- Suggests that a bridge might be the best for my aesthetic case.
Cosmetic dentist:
- Same person who did my veneers. From an aesthetic lens only, recommends doing an implant if only extracting #9 but recommends doing a bridge if extracting #9 and #10 for a better outcome.
Which brings me to this sub... PLEASE HELP!
Here are my burning questions:
- is a ceramic implant possible for this aesthetic case? (two-piece not one piece)
- does it matter if the ceramic implant is "bone-level" or not?
- will a ceramic implant impact gum recession?
- what's the verdict on full extraction vs partial extraction therapy?
- none of these Drs used robotics guided surgery - should I seek this out?
- should I retreat #10 apico to ensure implant success on #9?
- no one has discussed implant width with me - what questions should I be asking? Is ceramic possible with the correct width we want for #9?
- no one has discussed GBR with me - how do I know if I need more than a regular bone graft?
Most importantly... what is recommended for the
best aesthetic outcome?

2023.06.08 22:06 Nearby-Complaint Hale County Jane Doe Identified As Missing Mother
Twenty-year-old
Debra Denise Terrell, also known as Debra Mackey, disappeared from
Lubbock, Texas on New Year's Day of 1981. Last seen leaving her mother's house with an unknown man, the young woman had a turbulent life and was married to a much older man with a child before she even turned fifteen. She had a daughter who was in elementary school at the time, and she was described as being quite close with both her daughter and her sisters.
Her loved ones believed that she wouldn't just up and leave her life, suspecting that she was the victim of foul play. When Debra was last seen, she was wearing a checkered brown coat, a plaid shirt, green pants, and a bandana around her head. Authorities initially suspected that she walked away and changed her name, but after years went by with no contact, they came to the same conclusion as her family - that she had been murdered.
Meanwhile, just weeks later, investigators from
Hale County, Texas, were searching for evidence in a local murder case, when they came across the body of a young woman on a remote dirt road near the town of Plainview. She had been decapitated and her hands were tied behind her back. Medical examiners believed that she was white, likely in her late teens to early twenties and that she had been dead for several months, if not years. Henry Lee Lucas, best known as the 'Confession Killer', claimed responsibility for her death, though the charges were later dropped. Just days after Jane Doe was discovered in Hale County,
a skull was found in the same area, which disgraced pathologist
Ralph Erdmann believed belonged to the body.
Erdmann was later convicted of several counts of perjury and evidence tampering, mostly related to falsifying evidence on autopsy reports. He later surrendered his medical license and spent the rest of his days in Washington State. An exhumation in 2015 confirmed what local law enforcement suspected: that 'Jane Doe' was actually two different women. The DNA Doe Project, a genetic genealogy nonprofit, offered to take on the case of the first woman found and determined that she was actually of Black descent. Despite hurdles in their genetic research, the young woman found in Hale County was officially identified today as Debra Denise Terrell.

2023.06.08 20:17 LIS1050010 Guide: How many acres do you need for a hobby farm or homestead?
If you take on too much land you’ll stretch yourself (and your wallet) too thin, but if you take on too little you could end up with a failing farm fast.
For aspiring self-reliant homesteaders or hobby farmers, figuring out just the right amount of acreage is crucial.
For answers to this foundational question, we turned to successful and well-known homesteader, small-scale farmer, educator and farming consultant Ben Godfrey of
Sand Creek Farm in Cameron, TX.
Ben and his wife Alysha started out as small-scale hobby farmers and now run a successful, full-time 169-acre sustainable farm and homestead. Today, Ben shares his story, advice and insights on how you can get started on your hobby farming journey.
A gradual shift from city slickers to suburban equestrians, then hobby farmers, then professionals
Like most families, the Godfreys didn’t begin their life together as homesteaders.
Ben (a country boy), his wife Alysha (a city girl) and
their growing family gradually migrated from suburbia to full-time farming over the course of many years. Ben explains:
“My wife was a city girl, so I kept wanting to bring her out to the country. I started with our first house in a little subdivision, then I drew her out to a rural subdivision with about 3 acres so she could have her horses there, then I lured her out to a bigger house on around 20 acres.”
As the family fell in love with hobby farming and country life, they quickly expanded to 40 acres. All the while Ben was still running a successful construction company in town.
Ben says jokingly, “The 20 acres was really just to entice my wife in the beginning, but I had plans to purchase the 20 adjoining acres as well.”
On their 40 acres they had a small dairy and horses; grew their own produce and livestock; and had an orchard. It worked for them and allowed Ben to continue his career in construction, until…
Trading in a lucrative construction business to live off the land
Like most hobby farmers, Ben’s “real job” as owner of a construction company supported the family and afforded them a comfortable living.
Though Ben and Alysha were more than capable of straddling both worlds, it didn’t come without a price.
“We’d been evolving over to farming and I just enjoyed it much more,” Ben explains. “Even though the income was a lot better in construction, it caused a lot of stress and the quality of life was a lot better in farming.
“Plus in construction I was gone from the farm and my family a lot and I really wanted to be closer to my family. Now every day, with the exception of deliveries, I’m at home with them.”
Ben and Alysha now have five girls, ages 3 to 16, who help them out on the homestead.
How the Godfreys tackled the sustainable farming learning curve (with help from the Amish)
Though Ben has a degree in Agricultural Development from Texas A&M, plus some previous hobby farm experience, the Godfreys knew they still had a lot to learn about how to manage a sustainable farm and homestead.
“The type of agriculture they teach at Texas A&M is not at all like what we do here," Ben says. "We’re using agriculture that was probably taught at A&M 100 years ago, before chemicals were so prevalent. It is a lot more sustainable.”
So how did they figure out how to start their sustainable farm?
“When we bought the 40-acre hobby farm it was a blank canvas. It was basically a hay field with just a little bit of woods. We wanted to build a home, our barns, facilities and everything for a homestead. So I told my wife I thought we should visit the Amish to see how they do it.”
His wife agreed, and Ben quickly scheduled a business trip up to Ohio with the main goal of observing the Amish.
He connected with an Amish family there, and they invited Ben to bring his whole family to work and learn from them on their farms. “I was just so impressed by the quality of their children. And from there, we went from really 'a city lifestyle while living in the country,' to a much simpler lifestyle doing a lot more as a family.”
It was through their work with the Amish that they discovered the magic of using draft horses for farming.
“After our first visit, we returned to Ohio in October and bought a team of horses and all the equipment,” Ben recalls. “We harnessed up the two horses right there at the sale barn and drove them 2 ½ miles down the road to our friends’ farm…and it was just as peaceful as can be. From then on I was hooked.”
Ben and Alysha have remained close with their Amish friends for the past 13 years, and still return to Ohio to visit and purchase horses and equipment.
To date, they’ve brought more than 200 horses from Ohio to Texas.
How cashing in on their first hobby farm allowed them to “Go Big”
Though they loved their hobby farm, the Godfreys dreamed of having enough land to start up a larger dairy and sustainable farming business.
So, when the opportunity arose to sell their homestead (for a healthy profit) in 2007, they jumped on it and used that income to buy a bigger farm in a more rural area.
That bigger farm was 169 acres, and would soon be known by the entire sustainable farming industry as Sand Creek Farm.
What a 169 acre sustainable farm and homestead looks like
The Godfreys have diversified their land beautifully. They offer raw milk and other dairy products (theirs was one of the first farms in Texas to get a raw for retail channel license), grass-fed beef, pork, broiler chickens and a limited number of eggs.
Their farm is almost entirely horse-powered using techniques and equipment acquired from their Amish friends, plus a few tricks Ben’s picked up online.
The pace, peacefulness, connection and environmental benefits of using horses falls right in line with their commitment to sustainability.
As for acreage and farm design, their four aquaponic greenhouses take up about 1 acre, 5-10 acres are dedicated to produce cultivation annually and all the rest is pasture for rotational grazing.
The farm is not “certified organic” though they raise all their products using organic principles. Ben explains:
“I’ve had the certification paperwork on my desk but I just haven’t seen the value in doing it. The relationship with your customer is the biggest deal. The only reason you’d need a certification is if you’re not selling direct to your customer. But if the customer is inspecting your farm themselves then you don’t really need it.”
They also offer sustainably grown food products from other farms, like pure Vermont Maple Syrup, raw honey, soaps and wholesome breads.
Historically, the majority of their business has come from dairy, which lead customers to the farm’s other offerings, such as their CSA program.
At present, Sand Creek Farm is transitioning.
“Dairy is still a major key, but I would say ideally we’d like to be 50% aquaponics, 25% dairy and 25% field vegetables, farm-stays and on-site training,” Ben explained.
Even with their success and reputation, the Godfreys aren’t afraid to embrace change and shift their business model as they continue to learn and grow.
40-169 acres works for the Godfreys, but what about beginner homesteaders and hobby farmers?
Ben gave some serious thought to our original question, “How much acreage do you need to start a hobby farm or homestead?” and offered this advice:
“If you were going to have a homestead with 1-2 horses, a family cow, and your gardens, I’d want 10 acres of pasture, 2 acres for produce, maybe a one-acre orchard and the rest of it would be buildings.
So 15 acres could hold most of what you want to do.”
The Godfreys opted for larger pieces of land for their homesteads because they have five children and usually keep 7-8 horses in addition to their dairy cows. All this requires more pasture.
Ben also offers this advice to aspiring homesteaders with “real jobs” on farm location:
“I wouldn’t recommend moving way outside the city limits. About 20-30 minutes outside civilization is good, but 45 minutes and up feels a little far. Unless you can telecommute, then being further out is great.”
Learn to farm, hobby farm or homestead firsthand from the Godfreys
Educating on sustainable farming is a HUGE piece of the Godfrey success puzzle. Here’s how you can tap their knowledge basin and learn from the best:
They offer seasonal internship programs at the farm that usually last 3-6 months, and they also hold on-site classes for those who can’t leave their full-time job to intern.
The Godfreys also offer consulting services and advice on everything from choosing your niche and the best location for your farm, to budgeting, planning, design, marketing, aquaponics and using draft horses.
The BEST first step you should take
Ben offered one last bit of advice on what all aspiring homesteaders or hobby farmers should do right now
before investing in land:
“If I were them, I would invest all of your time and money now in education and information. A library of books, experience—go work on a farm, go do a farm stay somewhere and try to get as much experience as possible before you buy the land. You’ll have a much more successful enterprise if you know what you’re getting into beforehand.”
