2023.06.08 09:45 ProteinFarts123 Found pricing for a DMARC vendor which are pushed by Microsoft, and it is disgusting.

Been evaluating DMARC recently, and I couldn't find much information to help guide me when comparing options. So I tried to write down my thoughts in a way I would have found useful. I hope someone on here gets a bit of value out of it.
A few observations is that there is a huge disparity between bottom range vendors and top range vendors in terms of price, and that there is a corresponding disparity in terms of tool functionality and Trust-center maturity. Top tier vendors offer some cool functions, but the increase in price was hardly worth it.
Common DMARC vendor problems
Common problems among nearly all DMARC vendors we spoke to (with 1 exception) was that they all had a hard time giving us a fixed quote, claiming that they needed to run a PoC/Trial to analyze our volumes before being able to quote us. A few would provide gross estimates for us. I got a bit grossed out, because it felt like the sales reps we met with were trying to gauge how much money they'd be leaving on the table.
Bottom Tier DMARC vendor problems
The bottom tier were sketchy in terms of where support is located, where data is processed (issue especially if we collect Forensic reports) and had a difficult time answering questions on the robustness and maturity of their organizational/technical controls for whatever certifications they held. They also provided low-usability UI:s and underwhelming project management features.
One of the vendors even suggested we spin up 2 instances of their platform to manage active/inactive domains separately. I assume sales person was either a) incompetent or b) thought we had just jumped off the bus from Jokkmokk or c) the tool was horrendous.
Another consideration was that these vendors were mostly in start-up mode, and really pushed their logo-slides, indicating to me that they are desperately accumulating corporate value to become attractive acquisition targets. God forbid they'd be purchased by like DarkTrace or something.
I did a bit of quick and dirty math, and couldn't see how they were running sustainable business models. When they described their headcounts and I looked at the revenue generated with an average across their entire "we have this many customers" slide. Especially since a few of the logos these guys said were 'customers' are actually using their freemium/trial to monitor (checked with contacts at company's who were part of the logo-slides.).
These vendors cost next to nothing, but introduce a level of risk I was not happy with.
Top Tier DMARC Vendor problems
3 of the vendors we looked at fit into this category, and the prices were absolutely outrageous. As in +30x higher prices. Than the other vendors. 2 of these were more forthcoming about price estimates, and the last one did the thing where the sales rep was really shady about the pricing so we finally had enough (I found their price list through google dorks and nearly puked).
However, the 2 vendors who were more forthcoming about their prices advised us that there is a mandatory Managed Service tacked onto the DMARC tool. The managed service sounded nice (bi-weekly/monthly project calls with a consultant from their side, effectively brining our time investment down by from ~6-8h / week to ~1-4h / week, which is helpful due to backlog). But we would be unable to unsubscribe from the managed service even after achieving p=reject and just monitoring.
The vendor who's prices nearly made me puke literally had 1 unique selling point compared to peers. The ability to generate DKIM keys through their console. Helpful, sure. But it absolutely does not merit a 2x higher price than the other 2 Top Tiers. The issue I have here is that this was the vendor pushed by Microsoft, and it really got under my skin that the sales rep almost took it for granted that the business was theirs because of the recommendation by MSFT. It made me wonder how many deals these guys get for outrageous price points by buyers who don't know any better.
These vendors cost a bunch, but offer the level of risk I am OK with introducing
What did we end up doing?
One of the vendors who didn't fit into either Top Tier or Low Tier fulfilled our criteria;
  1. Mature trust-center backed by good contracts, DPA:s ISO-certs and SOC-II etc. Sales rep and Engineer could speak towards various elements and were happy to make introductions to their CISO:s direct reports for more information.
  2. Price point was in-between Top tier & Bottom Tier.
  3. Price transparency and Predictability (They could provide prices based on # active domains + number of employees, irrespective of email volumes & sending services)
  4. Managed service portion could be removed upon renewal (once every 12 months) and the price effectively goes down by 50%.
  5. The sales rep was slightly less sleazy, but maybe that was because their licensing model was simpler? He was also transparent when we asked about recent negative feedback about their support.
  6. UI is decent & Integrated project management section so that tasks created in other sections of the console are populated into the project management time-line and assigned to an owner.
Notes;
  1. I don't want to break any policy here. So won't post a link to the price-list I found via dorks. I found it on a publicly facing governmental digital market place, published by one of the vendor's partners. Example:
    1. 3-10 Domains + <5 Sending Services scales from £17.5K / year up to 3-10 Domains + <27 Sending services for £100K / Year. And god help you if you have +50 domains.
  2. Don't want to mention which vendor we went with in the end. But we got 25 Domains + Unlimited volume + unlimited sending services for ~ €12K / year.
    1. As a comparison this is 10x the price of the Low-tier vendors, and 35% of the price of the most expensive vendor (when accounting for our number of sending sources, email volume and domains)
    2. Year 1 we added on Manage Services to help with our backlog, which we plan on cutting away once p=reject can be safely activated (expected time frame ~6 months -- Which realistically means ~8 months). At this point our annual bill goes down from €18K to €12K / Year.
  3. A key consideration that I found tricky before finding the vendor we went with, was trying to forecast expected email volumes since the company is planning on entering new markets, with big marketing pushes. We could have woken up one day and gotten a "true-up" call with up-to a 6x license price increase if our outbound volumes exceeded 2.5million emails. (I don't see that happening anytime soon, but I'd hate to forget about this as the company grows).
  4. Getting approval for the spend was done together with marketing, and we split it 50/50. We basically asked our CMO-lite what would happen if their marketing emails went to junk-folders or were rejected outright because one of their marketing services was unaccounted for.
    1. Convo went something like:
      1. "What's your worst-case projection for this initiative?"
      2. "It's x% of target"
      3. "Okey, does that worst-case projection account for if your email marketing ends up in junk folders?"
      4. "Ye... erhh.. end up in junk folders...?"
      5. (Marketing now has a vested interest in being open about the crap they use/want to get, and CMO-lite has raised this twice with her team so far).
Sorry for any spelling/grammar issues, guys. English =/= first language. Some of the information here could be inconsistent between territories/markets. Hope someone finds it helpful.

Radical Climate Group Deflating SUV Tires, Says It Has 'Active Groups' In 18 Countries

Under cover of darkness, activists from a radical left-wing group unscrewed the valve caps on tires, placed lentils or other pulses into the valve cap, and then screwed them back on. Tires of sports utility vehicles (SUVs) are covertly deflated.
In the name of combatting “climate change,” the group that encourages people to carry out sabotage activities on SUV owners claimed its operations had been expanded to 18 countries, including the United States.
“Reports [are] coming in of very angry #CarShaggers who are upset they can’t drive their massive tanks around Lisbon. Oh no!” the group said on its website on June 1. The group, calling itself the Tyre Extinguishers, announced its campaign had reached Lisbon, Portugal.
Here is the website for these crazy wackos: https://www.tyreextinguishers.com/news?slug=first-action-in-portugal-lisbon-suvs-disarmed
Tyre Extinguishers claimed that it now has “active groups” in 18 countries, including the United States, the UK, Canada, Austria, New Zealand, and Germany. According to the group’s Twitter account, on the night of May 31, more than 40 vehicles were “disarmed” by activists in Potsdam, Germany.
The group said it wants to make it impossible to own an SUV in urban areas.
To do that, we need people everywhere deflating 4×4 tyres, week-in, week-out,” the group said on its website.
In its first reported tire-deflating operation in the UK in March 2022, the group said that “SUVs are unnecessary ‘luxury emissions’, flaunted by the wealthy,” condemning the vehicles as “a climate disaster.” https://www.tyreextinguishers.com/news?slug=press-release-tyres-deflated-on-hundreds-of-suvs-overnight-in-13-uk-locations-as-demands-for-climate-action-grow
Its website released instructions on how to deflate tires and also pamphlets and stickers that activists could print at home and leave on targeted vehicles’ windshields.
“ATTENTION – Your gas guzzler kills. We have deflated one or more of your tires. You’ll be angry, but don’t take it personally. It’s not you, it’s your car,” read the leaflets.
“We did this because driving around urban areas in your massive vehicle has huge consequences for others,” it continued. “We’re taking actions into our own hands because our governments and politicians will not.”
The group encourages activists around the world to target SUVs in “posh/middle-class areas.”
In April, the group said its members “deflated the tires of 43 luxury SUVs around the neighborhood of Beacon Hill” in its “first action” in Boston.

Tyre Extinguishers said they only targeted “large, luxury” gas-powered SUVs, noting, “no tires were deflated on electric or hybrid vehicles nor any vehicles with handicap signage.”
But local residents were frustrated by the vandalism.
“I’m all for taking action to save the environment but I just don’t know that destroying people’s personal property or damaging people’s personal property is the way to go about doing it,” a local resident named Lauren told Boston 25 News. Lauren said her parents’ vehicle was targeted.
https://www.boston25news.com/news/local/group-claims-it-deflated-tires-dozens-luxury-suvs-bostons-beacon-hill-make-statement/VTOPJ4AVRRDA7CRF3SGCL7IC2I/
“My parents didn’t need to go anywhere immediately this morning, but I know another person in the neighborhood who’s a firefighter and couldn’t get to the fire station,” Lauren told the news channel on April 20. “There are plenty of people who work at the hospital and couldn’t get to work on time.”
Another resident reportedly missed a medical appointment due to the deflated tire: https://archive.vn/ZGguB
The Boston Police Department interviewed 10 victims on April 20 and made no arrests, according to local media reports.
Tyre Extinguishers activists also carried out vandalism in other cities in the United States. Last year, the campaign claimed credit for deflating tires in the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, New York, and Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Describing itself as a “leaderless” group, Tyre Extinguishers claimed it had deflated the tires of more than 10,000 SUVs since March 2022. Last November, they claimed they had let down the tires of 900 SUVs in one night, with vehicles in New York and 7 European nations targeted: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/nov/29/tyre-extinguishers-deflate-tyres-of-900-suvs-in-biggest-ever-action

2023.06.08 09:23 NecessaryOk1907 i don't want a relationship with my dad anymore

cw for brief mentions of suicide, fatphobia
when i was 16 i read my mom's journal that she'd left out (i know that i should not have done that and i feel extremely guilty about it and also i was a pretty immature shithead at 16 so please no comments i already have a guilt complex lmfao) and found out my dad had repeatedly cheated on her sexually and emotionally. i already did not like being around him for a myriad of reasons - he has a huge ego, he is a bad listener, he has a bad temper and has called me really hurtful shit that still sticks with me, he definitely put his career (and his affairs) before my mom and i when i was a kid, he's probably a narcissist, and my parents both definitely neglected me - and i pretty much stopped talking to him entirely even though we lived in the same house. it was fucking miserable and i hated him. when he would come home i would drop what i was doing and go to my room and lock the door. if he came into the kitchen while i was cooking i would straight up dump whatever i was making in the trash and leave. i can't fully explain why it was so intense - some mixture of unprocessed trauma and teen angst, and it was on top of depression that had been gradually worsening since i was like 9 lol - but it was. they separated and then divorced pretty soon after that and he moved out when i was about 17.
i didn't speak to him again until i was 19, and i didn't have a real "relationship" with him until i was 20ish. now he lives a state away but i see him every 2-3 months when he's in town. we get dinner or coffee and usually talk for a few hours. i also visited his new house and his new girlfriend for a weekend once. i can kind of tell that he sees this as some wonderful reconnection and redemption story. i guess it is. the problem is that i still do not like him and i still cannot stand being around him. i am absolutely exhausted emotionally and physically after being around him. in my opinion he tells me too much - he will randomly offhandedly mention the sex and porn addictions he's in therapy for, he told me all about what it was like breaking up with his ex girlfriend and why he did it and how depressed he was, he made some really fucking weird and fatphobic comments about his current girlfriend and how she "knew how to use angles" in her dating profile because she was fatter in person, he's made a few innuendos about that girlfriend, he showed me his match.com profile, etc. he's told me about how hard it was for him when i wasn't speaking with him and how his friends all told him to force me to (that year was the worst my mental health has ever been (for more reasons than just this) and i tried to kill myself, but no one knows that). some of these are things that i think might be normal to talk about with an adult child, and some of them definitely aren't, but it all feels icky and uncomfortable because of the context of our past relationship. like, you cheated on my mom, i don't want to hear shit about your dating app escapades, yknow?
when he says things that make me uncomfortable i don't say anything, partially because i don't want to rock the boat, partially because i don't want to put the time or the energy into the uncomfortable conversation that would inevitably ensue, and partially because sometimes i don't even notice i'm uncomfortable and drained until after the fact. i also find myself telling him more than i'd like to - i find myself telling him quite a bit about my job and my relationship a lot even though i don't really want him to be a part of either of those things. contrary to everything i've said so far the conversation usually comes pretty easy.
i have no idea how to set boundaries with what we can and can't talk about with him and i have no idea how he would react. there's a solid chance that he has grown and worked through some shit in therapy and would be able to hear that, and there's also a solid chance that he'd manipulate me into feeling guilty for ever challenging him. i have no idea. all i know is the last time i saw him i went into a week long mental health tailspin afterwards and i couldn't figure out why until after the fact and i don't want to do that again. it's hard because i don't like... feel abused if that makes sense. he only ever spanked me and so did my mom and it was never serious. he didn't yell much. he didn't drink or do drugs. i had no idea what was going on when i was a kid. he's helping me financially through college and remembers my birthday and offers to help when i have to move and shit. he speaks to me kindly and tells me he's proud of me. he's pretty much doing everything right on a baseline level. he has grown a lot and i can tell. and i still can't stand him and i don't know if i ever will be able to.

2023.06.08 08:51 digitalghosts 32M. Feeling stuck in customer service purgatory. Sleepwalking through a career I hate as a burned-out restaurant manager.

My father always worked long hours at various blue collar jobs and took pride in working hard to provide for our family. He insisted that I have a job the day I was old enough to be hired, so at 15 I got an after-school job bagging orders, sweeping the floor, and learning the “value of a dollar” at a local fast food restaurant.
Throughout the following 17 years I’ve consistently had a job in some form of customer service. I’ve signed you up for a credit card at a department store that no longer exists. I’ve served you 3 baskets of biscuits at your grandma’s favorite seafood restaurant. I’ve sold your cousin a lightly-used SUV, I’ve mixed your martini, and I’ve offered you 2 months of free service if you keep the cable that you never use.
I’ve done these positions well enough to get by and get promotions, and have spent the last several years primarily being a restaurant manager. I’ve hated it every step of the way. For starters, I’m not necessarily a people person. I can have a pleasant interaction and pretend to be extroverted, but it doesn’t come naturally and is exhausting. I essentially check out of my body for 10-12 hours a day as I’m flooded with a constant rotation of faces, whispering that it’s their daughter’s birthday or yelling about how an enchilada wasn’t hot enough. I still enjoy working with a team, and might even thrive in a bit of chaos but interacting with hundreds of people I don’t know(or frankly care about) is entirely too much.
Even though the salary and benefits are decent and I’m wearing nicer clothes in a nicer restaurant, I can’t help but feel stuck in the same situation I was in at 15 years old: bagging orders, sweeping floors, and greeting a stranger with a smile for a paycheck. Someone in my position would typically continue a move into corporate management, but that could be a decade or more of soul-crushing work for a job I still wouldn’t want. I dropped out of college before getting a degree due to burnout/depression from working overnight shifts at a hotel front desk while attending classes during the day. My body is already feeling the effects of being on my feet all day, and trade school options seem to lean towards physical labor.
Now that I am in my 30s, I know that I have to make a pivot in my career and life. My schedule makes it extremely difficult to pursue a life outside of work. I’ve been with my partner for 8 months and due to my 55+ hour work week, we only see each other 2 days a week at most. Hard to form a serious relationship with someone you barely see. I have always loved graphic design, painting, photography and being visually creative but don’t have the time or energy to explore these hobbies.
My dad still works long hours at a blue collar job. Now he does it with a stiff back, bad knees, and distain for humanity. I don’t want another 17 years to pass working hard but getting nowhere.
So, what can someone in my position do to find a career path that actually suits me? Is it too late or even worth going back to school for a degree if I found that path?

2023.06.08 08:21 summersellsvegas I want to be admitted

So normally, someone wouldn't want to be admitted to hospital, but I am not in a normal circumstance. I'm 17 weeks preg, all of my docs are telling me to do different things. I'm bleeding profusely, pain is next level, scared for my baby. My labs keep coming up "ok" or "oh your inflammation isn't that bad, it's a little elevated but not too bad" I feel like shit, I literally want to be monitored round the clock, because if I lost this baby because the docs couldn't get it together, I would just... well let's just say it wouldn't be good. But they keep saying I'm not sick enough.

2023.06.08 07:44 Bobathaar first impressions

So I just picked one up today. I went all black tactical commander size with chainlink all around on grip and "dual" slide cut. No magwell and flat trigger. Stated 6 week lead time was in reality closer to the 9 week mark, but happy to see that it doesn't look like they rushed it out the door. Here are my initial takeaways having fondled it but not yet having had a chance to make a range day yet.

  1. The gun is fairly tightly fit. Required a bushing wrench to disassemble/assemble. Not "Les Baer... you better set aside 500 rounds of hot ammo to break this in before it even works" tight.... but I'd say it's more well fit and blended than Staccatos, which are, after all, production guns... whereas this is sort of a super underpriced semicustom. Upon disassembly I see that the finish has already worn to silver on the sides and top of the rails... probably from test fire. That's a tight gun.
  2. Not a fan of the safety they use. It's not super positive, and it's a bit tough to snap on (snapping it off is fine)... seems to drag on something every time I want to engage it to the on position. My bigger gripe, though, is that it curves a bit downward and the underside is SHARP. Not dehorned at all sharp. I have a habit of snapping the safety to the on position if I'm gonna run with the gun in hand and only snapping it off as I come on target... but that's probably not going to fly with this gun, would end up with a cut on my thumb. The safeties are sharp, hard to actuate, and small. Biggest gripe about the gun. I mean, maybe I'm spoiled by my high ride extra wide atlas safeties, but even the edcx9, which has smaller safeties, has rounded off and dehorned edges that are very comfortable to actuate. Snapping the safety on and off 10 times with this gun makes me just want to put it down.
  3. Trigger is good... but not custom gun good. It's a much better trigger job than comes from say, factory 1911's or staccato. Good enough that I've no interest in doing any work on it. But it's not to the standard of my infinity or my atlases or even my wilson edcx9. That being said, the cheapest of those guns run double what the platypus does, so it defintely is punching above its price range. It's good enough that if I ordered a 3-6k custom gun and it came with this trigger job I wouldn't consider sending it back. The "flat" selection trigger is very comfortable to pull without disturbing the sights and is set to such that someone who usually orders atlas guns with a "curved medium" or "short flat" trigger feels it is the right length for my hand. Does not seem to be set screw adjustable, but I don't feel the need to adjust takeup or overtravel at all. It's set to pretty much exactly how much take up I like and maybe just a smidge more overtravel... but I run my guns with VERY little overtravel.
  4. I ordered the acro cut. Acro sits so that the very bottom of the glass is flush with the level of the pistol... sits very low, which is great. The backup irons also sit fairly low and are very unobtrusive due to their low pro and super slim profile. Good design. Better than the plate systems that most other makers force on you (Atlas, Nighthawk, Wilson, etc etc).
  5. Fits in my T1C axis for a 2011 w/x300u. Needed to modify mag carrier side to accommodate glock mags. Also fits a safariland for 2011 5" tactical w/ x300u. Does not fit ANY of my 2011 hoslters made for just the gun. Also does not fit any of my wilson edcx9 holsters due to my choice of square trigger guard, although I suspect that had I ordered a round trigger guard they would fit perfectly. So I guess I'm running it with a light.
  6. Action feels... like a tight production 1911. Doesn't have that otherworldy smoothness you get when you rack an infinity or an atlas. Feels most akin to the edcx9... maybe because they're both aluminum frames. Maybe that's just the steel on aluminum feel. Felt kinda like a staccato c2, which is also aluminum framed, as opposed to the all steel staccato p, which feels smoother.
  7. It's very light. Lighter than my edcx9, which is actually a smaller gun. If feels light enough that my FFL guy thought it was a polymer frame until I told him it wasn't.
  8. 2 pc guide rod sucks. I might just change it out for a standard 1911 commander stubby rod and plug. Wish they wouldve just done either that or went bull barrel with a tool-less guide rod. I mean, I guess it's not the end of the world since the gun is tight enough you're not going to be taking it apart without a bushing wrench anyway, so if you're already using tools one more isn't the end of the world.
  9. As for finish... I know they offer the whole 50 shades of whatever the fuck you want on their site. I'm not a big paint your gun guy. I just went black. HOWEVER, I am of the opinion that paint is NOT an acceptable firearms finish. I would really love to see the frame anodized and the slide done in dlc/pvd/np3/hard chrome/whatever... something that isn't paint. Go ahead and upcharge me for it. I'll click the button. I promise.
Conclusion... if it runs well and shoots well, it would make a very good carry or duty gun due to it's weight, the reliability of its mags (as opposed to finicky 2011 mags) and its relatively low cost. You get alot of the custom attention to detail and features at a very competitive price point. You DO, however, feel a few things lacking as opposed to the 3k or 5k or 10k pistols: There are just these small things where you keep thinking "man, wouldn't it be great if someone just spent a few mins doing this or an hour dehorning that" but then you realize it's those 10 or so hours of labor that set aside the high price bracket. This really is an impressive gun offering just off semi-custom/custom quality for what really is just high end production cost. If it shoots well it'll definitely replace staccato as what I recommend to ppl getting into 2011's.

2023.06.08 07:43 OutdatedBadMeme Story about recruitment agency

throwaway account just to be safe.
So back in August, i was jobless and this recruitment agency reached out for a position working for an US based company. I am from a shitty country with shitty salaries so the salary is the equivalent of a 6 figure salary. As in my previous job, companies don't want to take the risk to hire like that, so they do it through a platform as an intermediary.
Months after i started working I realised there wasn't just the intermediary in between me and the company, there was also the recruitment agency. The way they work, they tell the company everything is free, but they will make some of my salary off the duration of my work, but they don't tell either part how much it is. To my boss' and my surprise, it was 33% of my salary. And if the company wants to hire me directly, they have to pay 13 of my salaries up front. Even after almost a year of working there. The amount drops to 6 salaries after 2 years or something like that.
In my opinion, my company messed up signing something like this, it's what you get for getting tempted into "free" shit that's way more expensive if you bother to read the fine print, but i still think it's an awfully shitty way to do business, which is par for the course of your typical leech. Having said that:
1) Be careful of this, i might have negotiated differently if i knew there was a big gap between what i was saying and what my boss was seeing on their end. I was also doing the math wrong when assessing my ROI to the company. I was far less competitive moneywise, than i thought vs a regular American employee.
2) I don't know if any of you has any experience in this or any advice. I don't know how petty recruiters are and how careful should i be hiding this. I am not going to get into trouble personally because my contract doesn't forbid any of what i'm doing, but the company might and then i might be indirectly affected by it.
Meanwhile, i am going to be enjoying a 17% pay raise thanks to going 50/50 on the money that we are saving, and will be able to more easily ask for future pay raises since it's not going to cost the company more than what i'd be getting.

I am getting a new car, I won't be driving it around the city that much, mostly on a bit longer rides, 100 kms or more. My budget is not that big, I'd like to spend up to 7-8000 euro. I've been gathing info for the last couple of weeks and oh man I've gotten so many advices from various people but something they are opposite to what i've already heard.
What do you think about getting a older honda. I'd get it to a mechanic for a checkout and also check it on carvertical.com
These 2 got my attention.

In excellent condition. Registered for a year !!
The car comes with two sets of rims: a summer set of 16-inch alloy rims with new Pirelli tires and a winter set of 15-inch steel rims with Continental tires DOT 2921. In addition, the car is equipped with a Honda Civic EP3 sports three-spoke steering wheel (same generation hatchback only) and multimedia Phonocar VM012, which includes the option of Apple Carplay and Android auto and many other options. 2023.06.08 07:04 Glittering_Sense_489 I know it's a long read, but I need help understanding this girl

For context, me (20) and this girl (18) have been friends for almost 2 years. We were both born in Puerto Rico, but my parents are Argentinean. We met through my dad being friends with her mom. My dad owns a workshop and when I help him in his place I go to eat lunch in a restaurant where the girl's mom is the owner. I've known her mom way before I met her. One day the mom sent her to work with us, since the girl likes cars. After this day she would work with us most saturdays. She hasn't become an actual employee, but has asked me if we have a secretary, which could mean that shes interested in becoming a employee. That's how I met her.
Shortly after meeting I received a follow request from random account that at the time I thought it was a bot, so I accepted the follow request to increase my followers. I had this app on my phone that monitors who goes on my Instagram profile and this account was on the list for months. About 6 months later I noticed that it was her but in a alt account after she posted a question of somebody asking her if she had a finsta. Then after realizing it was her I started following the account. Shortly after this I returned from a European vacation and gifted her a miniature eiffel tower keychain. This was all in the same day. The same day I noticed that she unfollowed me on that account. A month later the following conversation occurred:
Me: hey, I noticed that you unfollowed me on instagram Girl: but I follow on my finsta Me: no you don't Girl: checks instagram what's your username? Girl: I'll do it later at home.
Basically ignored the question
July 10 2022 We were on our to eat lunch at her mother's restaurant and I mentioned that last was my birthday just to let her know. This conversation followed:
Me: hey last week I turned 20. Girl: what? Why didn't you call to let me know? Me: I just didn't want to bother you Girl: You wouldn't be bothering me
The same day this conversation occurred: Girl: you know Jowell y Randy (puertorican rapper duo) Me: Yeah. Why? Girl: My cousin is friends with Jowell's son. I want to be the son's girlfriend. Me: Alright cool Why would she tell me this? To make me jealous? Why would she want to be with a guy she's never met? Confuses me.
Another day, I came in to work in a barcelona soccer shirt and complimented me saying that she likes my shirt. The following conversation followed:
Girl: I like your shirt Me: Thanks 1 minute passes Girl: I like your shirt Me: You already said that, but thanks again Girl: nervous smile
January 3 2023 The day before, at night, my dad called her and asked her if she could help us at the workshop. Had been about a month since I've seen her. The same night she posted her first bikini pic to her instagram. On this day (last time I saw her) she asked if I played playstation. I said yes and gave her my username and she friend requested me and added as a close friend (which shows real name on profile). We talked about games we have in common and she told me that she plays warzone alot and if i could play with her. I told her that im not good at that game, but she told me that it didnt matter and that she would teach me and help me improve. The same day the following conversation occurred: we were talking about being a introvert or extrovert.
Translated from Spanish Me: you talk to much Girl: well I'm actually a introvert Me: Seriously?! (sarcasm) Girl: (understanding the sarcasm) yeah but with you I'm a extrovert (smiles).
(Sounds way better in spanish, but my rough translation will do)
The following days, I would send her invitations to play on playstation, but everytime she would ignore them.
January 10 2023 She posted sendit to her snapchat asking for questions. People asked her the following.
whos ur crush?
Her: I dont think of him as a crush but I think he's cute
who do u like?
Her: I don't like anyone but there is a guy and I think he is cute :)
It can be about someone else but noone will ever know.
February 13 2023 This day she sent me a snap with a photo asking me if I wanted to do streaks, I said yes and stated that I haven't done streaks in a long time. I didn't receive any text back and later I sent a snap to start the streak. Three days later she hasn't opened the snap I sent.
February 17 2023 This day she asked me again for streaks, after ignoring me when she first asked. She did the exact same thing she did the first time.
The last two months, I've been going through a stressful family issue including my parents divorce progress and I haven't seen or talked to her in 3 months and probably not going to see her this summer since I don't talk to my dad anymore, which is the only way I see her.
June 8 2023 Its now been 5 months since I've seen her. About week ago, she privated her instagram, hasn't played playstation in a week and hasn't posted on bereal for a week. She also hasn't posted anything on snapchat for atleast 2 weeks.

Thank you for over 170+ responses in our first vote! Now, we're on to the second.
You may have already seen the link in our post about LGBT+ recommendations - but we're also celebrating Pride Month by hosting our very first Pride Month Cozy Fantasy Tournament!

What's this?

We've got a long list of cozy fantasy recommendations featuring LGBT+ characters on our subreddit! If you haven't seen it or you're looking for something new to read this month, check it out here and give your own recommendations.
Now, it's time to choose which of the novels on the list gets to be crowned the top cozy fantasy recommendation for Pride Month, tournament bracket-style!

How do I vote?

You're in the right place! We've randomly matched the novels on the list against one another. It's up to you to vote to decide which book out of each pair is a better recommendation. We'll include links to Goodreads for each book, so you can check out summaries and more info, if you're curious. You're allowed to vote once per bracket; we don't collect any info, but Google might require you to sign in to be able to vote.
What's the criteria?
Vote with your heart and for what feels best! There's no set criteria for voting, so you can vote based on...
  • Which book do you like better?
  • Which do you think had a better plot?
  • Which do you think is more cozy?
  • Which do you think has better LGBT+ representation?
If you're not familiar with a pair of books, you can skip the vote for that pair.
How long do we have to vote?
Each bracket will last for one week, so you have time to think on your votes a bit! Votes open at 12:00 a.m. and close at 11:59 p.m. Central Time on the following dates.
🚨 Note that we have adjusted the dates / times of the votes to support the blackout in solidarity with Reddit users who use third-party apps. Learn more on ELI5. The vote for semi-finals will last two weeks to provide ample time for voting before and after the blackout on June 12 - 14.
Once we're in the final week to choose our finalist, we'll also have a vote for categories - Most Cozy, Best Representation, that kind of thing.
Which books are in the tournament?
We've selected eight well-known cozy fantasies with LGBT+ representation!
  • Ashwick, R.K. - A Rival Most Vial
  • Baldree, Travis - Legends & Lattes
  • Chambers, Becky - A Psalm for the Wild-Built
  • Klune, T.J. - House in the Cerulean Sea
These four cozy fantasy books were eliminated in a previous vote.
  • Evans, Johannes T. - Heart of Stone
  • Katz, Meredith - The Cybernetic Tea Shop
  • Rowland, S.L. - Cursed Cocktails
  • Thorne, Rebecca - Can’t Spell Treason without Tea
We'll post each week with the results of the previous bracket, plus a new form to vote on the next set!

Now, enough with the info - let's get voting!

COINTELPRO Techniques for dilution, misdirection and control of a internet forum..
There are several techniques for the control and manipulation of a internet forum no matter what, or who is on it. We will go over each technique and demonstrate that only a minimal number of operatives can be used to eventually and effectively gain a control of a 'uncontrolled forum.'
Technique #1 - 'FORUM SLIDING'
If a very sensitive posting of a critical nature has been posted on a forum - it can be quickly removed from public view by 'forum sliding.' In this technique a number of unrelated posts are quietly prepositioned on the forum and allowed to 'age.' Each of these misdirectional forum postings can then be called upon at will to trigger a 'forum slide.' The second requirement is that several fake accounts exist, which can be called upon, to ensure that this technique is not exposed to the public. To trigger a 'forum slide' and 'flush' the critical post out of public view it is simply a matter of logging into each account both real and fake and then 'replying' to prepositined postings with a simple 1 or 2 line comment. This brings the unrelated postings to the top of the forum list, and the critical posting 'slides' down the front page, and quickly out of public view. Although it is difficult or impossible to censor the posting it is now lost in a sea of unrelated and unuseful postings. By this means it becomes effective to keep the readers of the forum reading unrelated and non-issue items.
Technique #2 - 'CONSENSUS CRACKING'
A second highly effective technique (which you can see in operation all the time at www.abovetopsecret.com) is 'consensus cracking.' To develop a consensus crack, the following technique is used. Under the guise of a fake account a posting is made which looks legitimate and is towards the truth is made - but the critical point is that it has a VERY WEAK PREMISE without substantive proof to back the posting. Once this is done then under alternative fake accounts a very strong position in your favour is slowly introduced over the life of the posting. It is IMPERATIVE that both sides are initially presented, so the uninformed reader cannot determine which side is the truth. As postings and replies are made the stronger 'evidence' or disinformation in your favour is slowly 'seeded in.' Thus the uninformed reader will most like develop the same position as you, and if their position is against you their opposition to your posting will be most likely dropped. However in some cases where the forum members are highly educated and can counter your disinformation with real facts and linked postings, you can then 'abort' the consensus cracking by initiating a 'forum slide.'
Technique #3 - 'TOPIC DILUTION'
Topic dilution is not only effective in forum sliding it is also very useful in keeping the forum readers on unrelated and non-productive issues. This is a critical and useful technique to cause a 'RESOURCE BURN.' By implementing continual and non-related postings that distract and disrupt (trolling ) the forum readers they are more effectively stopped from anything of any real productivity. If the intensity of gradual dilution is intense enough, the readers will effectively stop researching and simply slip into a 'gossip mode.' In this state they can be more easily misdirected away from facts towards uninformed conjecture and opinion. The less informed they are the more effective and easy it becomes to control the entire group in the direction that you would desire the group to go in. It must be stressed that a proper assessment of the psychological capabilities and levels of education is first determined of the group to determine at what level to 'drive in the wedge.' By being too far off topic too quickly it may trigger censorship by a forum moderator.
Technique #4 - 'INFORMATION COLLECTION'
Information collection is also a very effective method to determine the psychological level of the forum members, and to gather intelligence that can be used against them. In this technique in a light and positive environment a 'show you mine so me yours' posting is initiated. From the number of replies and the answers that are provided much statistical information can be gathered. An example is to post your 'favourite weapon' and then encourage other members of the forum to showcase what they have. In this matter it can be determined by reverse proration what percentage of the forum community owns a firearm, and or a illegal weapon. This same method can be used by posing as one of the form members and posting your favourite 'technique of operation.' From the replies various methods that the group utilizes can be studied and effective methods developed to stop them from their activities.
Technique #5 - 'ANGER TROLLING'
Statistically, there is always a percentage of the forum posters who are more inclined to violence. In order to determine who these individuals are, it is a requirement to present a image to the forum to deliberately incite a strong psychological reaction. From this the most violent in the group can be effectively singled out for reverse IP location and possibly local enforcement tracking. To accomplish this only requires posting a link to a video depicting a local police officer massively abusing his power against a very innocent individual. Statistically of the million or so police officers in America there is always one or two being caught abusing there powers and the taping of the activity can be then used for intelligence gathering purposes - without the requirement to 'stage' a fake abuse video. This method is extremely effective, and the more so the more abusive the video can be made to look. Sometimes it is useful to 'lead' the forum by replying to your own posting with your own statement of violent intent, and that you 'do not care what the authorities think!!' inflammation. By doing this and showing no fear it may be more effective in getting the more silent and self-disciplined violent intent members of the forum to slip and post their real intentions. This can be used later in a court of law during prosecution.
Technique #6 - 'GAINING FULL CONTROL'
It is important to also be harvesting and continually maneuvering for a forum moderator position. Once this position is obtained, the forum can then be effectively and quietly controlled by deleting unfavourable postings - and one can eventually steer the forum into complete failure and lack of interest by the general public. This is the 'ultimate victory' as the forum is no longer participated with by the general public and no longer useful in maintaining their freedoms. Depending on the level of control you can obtain, you can deliberately steer a forum into defeat by censoring postings, deleting memberships, flooding, and or accidentally taking the forum offline. By this method the forum can be quickly killed. However it is not always in the interest to kill a forum as it can be converted into a 'honey pot' gathering center to collect and misdirect newcomers and from this point be completely used for your control for your agenda purposes.
CONCLUSION
Remember these techniques are only effective if the forum participants DO NOT KNOW ABOUT THEM. Once they are aware of these techniques the operation can completely fail, and the forum can become uncontrolled. At this point other avenues must be considered such as initiating a false legal precidence to simply have the forum shut down and taken offline. This is not desirable as it then leaves the enforcement agencies unable to track the percentage of those in the population who always resist attempts for control against them. Many other techniques can be utilized and developed by the individual and as you develop further techniques of infiltration and control it is imperative to share then with HQ.

Twenty-Five Rules of Disinformation
Note: The first rule and last five (or six, depending on situation) rules are generally not directly within the ability of the traditional disinfo artist to apply. These rules are generally used more directly by those at the leadership, key players, or planning level of the criminal conspiracy or conspiracy to cover up.
1. Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. Regardless of what you know, don't discuss it -- especially if you are a public figure, news anchor, etc. If it's not reported, it didn't happen, and you never have to deal with the issues.
2. Become incredulous and indignant. Avoid discussing key issues and instead focus on side issues which can be used show the topic as being critical of some otherwise sacrosanct group or theme. This is also known as the 'How dare you!' gambit.
3. Create rumor mongers. Avoid discussing issues by describing all charges, regardless of venue or evidence, as mere rumors and wild accusations. Other derogatory terms mutually exclusive of truth may work as well. This method which works especially well with a silent press, because the only way the public can learn of the facts are through such 'arguable rumors'. If you can associate the material with the Internet, use this fact to certify it a 'wild rumor' from a 'bunch of kids on the Internet' which can have no basis in fact.
4. Use a straw man. Find or create a seeming element of your opponent's argument which you can easily knock down to make yourself look good and the opponent to look bad. Either make up an issue you may safely imply exists based on your interpretation of the opponent/opponent arguments/situation, or select the weakest aspect of the weakest charges. Amplify their significance and destroy them in a way which appears to debunk all the charges, real and fabricated alike, while actually avoiding discussion of the real issues.
5. Sidetrack opponents with name calling and ridicule. This is also known as the primary 'attack the messenger' ploy, though other methods qualify as variants of that approach. Associate opponents with unpopular titles such as 'kooks', 'right-wing', 'liberal', 'left-wing', 'terrorists', 'conspiracy buffs', 'radicals', 'militia', 'racists', 'religious fanatics', 'sexual deviates', and so forth. This makes others shrink from support out of fear of gaining the same label, and you avoid dealing with issues.
6. Hit and Run. In any public forum, make a brief attack of your opponent or the opponent position and then scamper off before an answer can be fielded, or simply ignore any answer. This works extremely well in Internet and letters-to-the-editor environments where a steady stream of new identities can be called upon without having to explain criticism, reasoning -- simply make an accusation or other attack, never discussing issues, and never answering any subsequent response, for that would dignify the opponent's viewpoint.
7. Question motives. Twist or amplify any fact which could be taken to imply that the opponent operates out of a hidden personal agenda or other bias. This avoids discussing issues and forces the accuser on the defensive.
8. Invoke authority. Claim for yourself or associate yourself with authority and present your argument with enough 'jargon' and 'minutia' to illustrate you are 'one who knows', and simply say it isn't so without discussing issues or demonstrating concretely why or citing sources.
9. Play Dumb. No matter what evidence or logical argument is offered, avoid discussing issues except with denials they have any credibility, make any sense, provide any proof, contain or make a point, have logic, or support a conclusion. Mix well for maximum effect.
10. Associate opponent charges with old news. A derivative of the straw man -- usually, in any large-scale matter of high visibility, someone will make charges early on which can be or were already easily dealt with - a kind of investment for the future should the matter not be so easily contained.) Where it can be foreseen, have your own side raise a straw man issue and have it dealt with early on as part of the initial contingency plans. Subsequent charges, regardless of validity or new ground uncovered, can usually then be associated with the original charge and dismissed as simply being a rehash without need to address current issues -- so much the better where the opponent is or was involved with the original source.
11. Establish and rely upon fall-back positions. Using a minor matter or element of the facts, take the 'high road' and 'confess' with candor that some innocent mistake, in hindsight, was made -- but that opponents have seized on the opportunity to blow it all out of proportion and imply greater criminalities which, 'just isn't so.' Others can reinforce this on your behalf, later, and even publicly 'call for an end to the nonsense' because you have already 'done the right thing.' Done properly, this can garner sympathy and respect for 'coming clean' and 'owning up' to your mistakes without addressing more serious issues.
12. Enigmas have no solution. Drawing upon the overall umbrella of events surrounding the crime and the multitude of players and events, paint the entire affair as too complex to solve. This causes those otherwise following the matter to begin to lose interest more quickly without having to address the actual issues.
13. Alice in Wonderland Logic. Avoid discussion of the issues by reasoning backwards or with an apparent deductive logic which forbears any actual material fact.
14. Demand complete solutions. Avoid the issues by requiring opponents to solve the crime at hand completely, a ploy which works best with issues qualifying for rule 10.
15. Fit the facts to alternate conclusions. This requires creative thinking unless the crime was planned with contingency conclusions in place.
16. Vanish evidence and witnesses. If it does not exist, it is not fact, and you won't have to address the issue.
17. Change the subject. Usually in connection with one of the other ploys listed here, find a way to side-track the discussion with abrasive or controversial comments in hopes of turning attention to a new, more manageable topic. This works especially well with companions who can 'argue' with you over the new topic and polarize the discussion arena in order to avoid discussing more key issues.
18. Emotionalize, Antagonize, and Goad Opponents. If you can't do anything else, chide and taunt your opponents and draw them into emotional responses which will tend to make them look foolish and overly motivated, and generally render their material somewhat less coherent. Not only will you avoid discussing the issues in the first instance, but even if their emotional response addresses the issue, you can further avoid the issues by then focusing on how 'sensitive they are to criticism.'
19. Ignore proof presented, demand impossible proofs. This is perhaps a variant of the 'play dumb' rule. Regardless of what material may be presented by an opponent in public forums, claim the material irrelevant and demand proof that is impossible for the opponent to come by (it may exist, but not be at his disposal, or it may be something which is known to be safely destroyed or withheld, such as a murder weapon.) In order to completely avoid discussing issues, it may be required that you to categorically deny and be critical of media or books as valid sources, deny that witnesses are acceptable, or even deny that statements made by government or other authorities have any meaning or relevance.
20. False evidence. Whenever possible, introduce new facts or clues designed and manufactured to conflict with opponent presentations -- as useful tools to neutralize sensitive issues or impede resolution. This works best when the crime was designed with contingencies for the purpose, and the facts cannot be easily separated from the fabrications.
21. Call a Grand Jury, Special Prosecutor, or other empowered investigative body. Subvert the (process) to your benefit and effectively neutralize all sensitive issues without open discussion. Once convened, the evidence and testimony are required to be secret when properly handled. For instance, if you own the prosecuting attorney, it can insure a Grand Jury hears no useful evidence and that the evidence is sealed and unavailable to subsequent investigators. Once a favorable verdict is achieved, the matter can be considered officially closed. Usually, this technique is applied to find the guilty innocent, but it can also be used to obtain charges when seeking to frame a victim.
22. Manufacture a new truth. Create your own expert(s), group(s), author(s), leader(s) or influence existing ones willing to forge new ground via scientific, investigative, or social research or testimony which concludes favorably. In this way, if you must actually address issues, you can do so authoritatively.
23. Create bigger distractions. If the above does not seem to be working to distract from sensitive issues, or to prevent unwanted media coverage of unstoppable events such as trials, create bigger news stories (or treat them as such) to distract the multitudes.
24. Silence critics. If the above methods do not prevail, consider removing opponents from circulation by some definitive solution so that the need to address issues is removed entirely. This can be by their death, arrest and detention, blackmail or destruction of their character by release of blackmail information, or merely by destroying them financially, emotionally, or severely damaging their health.
25. Vanish. If you are a key holder of secrets or otherwise overly illuminated and you think the heat is getting too hot, to avoid the issues, vacate the kitchen.
_______________________________________________________________________
Eight Traits of the Disinformationalist
1) Avoidance. They never actually discuss issues head-on or provide constructive input, generally avoiding citation of references or credentials. Rather, they merely imply this, that, and the other. Virtually everything about their presentation implies their authority and expert knowledge in the matter without any further justification for credibility.
2) Selectivity. They tend to pick and choose opponents carefully, either applying the hit-and-run approach against mere commentators supportive of opponents, or focusing heavier attacks on key opponents who are known to directly address issues. Should a commentator become argumentative with any success, the focus will shift to include the commentator as well.
3) Coincidental. They tend to surface suddenly and somewhat coincidentally with a new controversial topic with no clear prior record of participation in general discussions in the particular public arena involved. They likewise tend to vanish once the topic is no longer of general concern. They were likely directed or elected to be there for a reason, and vanish with the reason.
4) Teamwork. They tend to operate in self-congratulatory and complementary packs or teams. Of course, this can happen naturally in any public forum, but there will likely be an ongoing pattern of frequent exchanges of this sort where professionals are involved. Sometimes one of the players will infiltrate the opponent camp to become a source for straw man or other tactics designed to dilute opponent presentation strength.
5) Anti-conspiratorial. They almost always have disdain for 'conspiracy theorists' and, usually, for those who in any way believe JFK was not killed by LHO. Ask yourself why, if they hold such disdain for conspiracy theorists, do they focus on defending a single topic discussed in a NG focusing on conspiracies? One might think they would either be trying to make fools of everyone on every topic, or simply ignore the group they hold in such disdain.Or, one might more rightly conclude they have an ulterior motive for their actions in going out of their way to focus as they do.
6) Artificial Emotions. An odd kind of 'artificial' emotionalism and an unusually thick skin -- an ability to persevere and persist even in the face of overwhelming criticism and unacceptance. This likely stems from intelligence community training that, no matter how condemning the evidence, deny everything, and never become emotionally involved or reactive. The net result for a disinfo artist is that emotions can seem artificial.
Most people, if responding in anger, for instance, will express their animosity throughout their rebuttal. But disinfo types usually have trouble maintaining the 'image' and are hot and cold with respect to pretended emotions and their usually more calm or unemotional communications style. It's just a job, and they often seem unable to 'act their role in character' as well in a communications medium as they might be able in a real face-to-face conversation/confrontation. You might have outright rage and indignation one moment, ho-hum the next, and more anger later -- an emotional yo-yo.
With respect to being thick-skinned, no amount of criticism will deter them from doing their job, and they will generally continue their old disinfo patterns without any adjustments to criticisms of how obvious it is that they play that game -- where a more rational individual who truly cares what others think might seek to improve their communications style, substance, and so forth, or simply give up.
7) Inconsistent. There is also a tendency to make mistakes which betray their true self/motives. This may stem from not really knowing their topic, or it may be somewhat 'freudian', so to speak, in that perhaps they really root for the side of truth deep within.
I have noted that often, they will simply cite contradictory information which neutralizes itself and the author. For instance, one such player claimed to be a Navy pilot, but blamed his poor communicating skills (spelling, grammar, incoherent style) on having only a grade-school education. I'm not aware of too many Navy pilots who don't have a college degree. Another claimed no knowledge of a particular topic/situation but later claimed first-hand knowledge of it.
8) Time Constant. Recently discovered, with respect to News Groups, is the response time factor. There are three ways this can be seen to work, especially when the government or other empowered player is involved in a cover up operation:
a) ANY NG posting by a targeted proponent for truth can result in an IMMEDIATE response. The government and other empowered players can afford to pay people to sit there and watch for an opportunity to do some damage. SINCE DISINFO IN A NG ONLY WORKS IF THE READER SEES IT - FAST RESPONSE IS CALLED FOR, or the visitor may be swayed towards truth.
b) When dealing in more direct ways with a disinformationalist, such as email, DELAY IS CALLED FOR - there will usually be a minimum of a 48-72 hour delay. This allows a sit-down team discussion on response strategy for best effect, and even enough time to 'get permission' or instruction from a formal chain of command.
c) In the NG example 1) above, it will often ALSO be seen that bigger guns are drawn and fired after the same 48-72 hours delay - the team approach in play. This is especially true when the targeted truth seeker or their comments are considered more important with respect to potential to reveal truth. Thus, a serious truth sayer will be attacked twice for the same sin.

How to Spot a Spy (Cointelpro Agent)
One way to neutralize a potential activist is to get them to be in a group that does all the wrong things. Why?
1) The message doesn't get out.
2) A lot of time is wasted
3) The activist is frustrated and discouraged
4) Nothing good is accomplished.
FBI and Police Informers and Infiltrators will infest any group and they have phoney activist organizations established.
Their purpose is to prevent any real movement for justice or eco-peace from developing in this country.
Agents come in small, medium or large. They can be of any ethnic background. They can be male or female.
The actual size of the group or movement being infiltrated is irrelevant. It is the potential the movement has for becoming large which brings on the spies and saboteurs.
This booklet lists tactics agents use to slow things down, foul things up, destroy the movement and keep tabs on activists.
It is the agent's job to keep the activist from quitting such a group, thus keeping him/her under control.
In some situations, to get control, the agent will tell the activist:
[Here, I have added the psychological reasons as to WHY this maneuver works to control people]
This invites guilty feelings. Many people can be controlled by guilt. The agents begin relationships with activists behind a well-developed mask of "dedication to the cause." Because of their often declared dedication, (and actions designed to prove this), when they criticize the activist, he or she - being truly dedicated to the movement - becomes convinced that somehow, any issues are THEIR fault. This is because a truly dedicated person tends to believe that everyone has a conscience and that nobody would dissimulate and lie like that "on purpose." It's amazing how far agents can go in manipulating an activist because the activist will constantly make excuses for the agent who regularly declares their dedication to the cause. Even if they do, occasionally, suspect the agent, they will pull the wool over their own eyes by rationalizing: "they did that unconsciously... they didn't really mean it... I can help them by being forgiving and accepting " and so on and so forth.
The agent will tell the activist:
This is designed to enhance the activist's self-esteem. His or her narcissistic admiration of his/her own activist/altruistic intentions increase as he or she identifies with and consciously admires the altruistic declarations of the agent which are deliberately set up to mirror those of the activist.
This is "malignant pseudoidentification." It is the process by which the agent consciously imitates or simulates a certain behavior to foster the activist's identification with him/her, thus increasing the activist's vulnerability to exploitation. The agent will simulate the more subtle self-concepts of the activist.
Activists and those who have altruistic self-concepts are most vulnerable to malignant pseudoidentification especially during work with the agent when the interaction includes matter relating to their competency, autonomy, or knowledge.
The goal of the agent is to increase the activist's general empathy for the agent through pseudo-identification with the activist's self-concepts.
The most common example of this is the agent who will compliment the activist for his competency or knowledge or value to the movement. On a more subtle level, the agent will simulate affects and mannerisms of the activist which promotes identification via mirroring and feelings of "twinship". It is not unheard of for activists, enamored by the perceived helpfulness and competence of a good agent, to find themselves considering ethical violations and perhaps, even illegal behavior, in the service of their agent/handler.
The activist's "felt quality of perfection" [self-concept] is enhanced, and a strong empathic bond is developed with the agent through his/her imitation and simulation of the victim's own narcissistic investments. [self-concepts] That is, if the activist knows, deep inside, their own dedication to the cause, they will project that onto the agent who is "mirroring" them.
The activist will be deluded into thinking that the agent shares this feeling of identification and bonding. In an activist/social movement setting, the adversarial roles that activists naturally play vis a vis the establishment/government, fosters ongoing processes of intrapsychic splitting so that "twinship alliances" between activist and agent may render whole sectors or reality testing unavailable to the activist. They literally "lose touch with reality."
Activists who deny their own narcissistic investments [do not have a good idea of their own self-concepts and that they ARE concepts] and consciously perceive themselves (accurately, as it were) to be "helpers" endowed with a special amount of altruism are exceedingly vulnerable to the affective (emotional) simulation of the accomplished agent.
Empathy is fostered in the activist through the expression of quite visible affects. The presentation of tearfulness, sadness, longing, fear, remorse, and guilt, may induce in the helper-oriented activist a strong sense of compassion, while unconsciously enhancing the activist's narcissistic investment in self as the embodiment of goodness.
The agent's expresssion of such simulated affects may be quite compelling to the observer and difficult to distinguish from deep emotion.
It can usually be identified by two events, however:
First, the activist who has analyzed his/her own narcissistic roots and is aware of his/her own potential for being "emotionally hooked," will be able to remain cool and unaffected by such emotional outpourings by the agent.
As a result of this unaffected, cool, attitude, the Second event will occur: The agent will recompensate much too quickly following such an affective expression leaving the activist with the impression that "the play has ended, the curtain has fallen," and the imposture, for the moment, has finished. The agent will then move quickly to another activist/victim.
The fact is, the movement doesn't need leaders, it needs MOVERS. "Follow the leader" is a waste of time.
A good agent will want to meet as often as possible. He or she will talk a lot and say little. One can expect an onslaught of long, unresolved discussions.
Some agents take on a pushy, arrogant, or defensive manner:
1) To disrupt the agenda
2) To side-track the discussion
3) To interrupt repeatedly
4) To feign ignorance
5) To make an unfounded accusation against a person.
Calling someone a racist, for example. This tactic is used to discredit a person in the eyes of all other group members.
Saboteurs
Some saboteurs pretend to be activists. She or he will ....
1) Write encyclopedic flyers (in the present day, websites)
2) Print flyers in English only.
3) Have demonstrations in places where no one cares.
4) Solicit funding from rich people instead of grass roots support
5) Display banners with too many words that are confusing.
6) Confuse issues.
7) Make the wrong demands.
8) Compromise the goal.
9) Have endless discussions that waste everyone's time. The agent may accompany the endless discussions with drinking, pot smoking or other amusement to slow down the activist's work.
Provocateurs
1) Want to establish "leaders" to set them up for a fall in order to stop the movement.
2) Suggest doing foolish, illegal things to get the activists in trouble.
3) Encourage militancy.
4) Want to taunt the authorities.
5) Attempt to make the activist compromise their values.
6) Attempt to instigate violence. Activisim ought to always be non-violent.
7) Attempt to provoke revolt among people who are ill-prepared to deal with the reaction of the authorities to such violence.
Informants
1) Want everyone to sign up and sing in and sign everything.
2) Ask a lot of questions (gathering data).
3) Want to know what events the activist is planning to attend.
4) Attempt to make the activist defend him or herself to identify his or her beliefs, goals, and level of committment.
Recruiting
Legitimate activists do not subject people to hours of persuasive dialog. Their actions, beliefs, and goals speak for themselves.
Groups that DO recruit are missionaries, military, and fake political parties or movements set up by agents.
Surveillance
ALWAYS assume that you are under surveillance.
At this point, if you are NOT under surveillance, you are not a very good activist!
Scare Tactics
They use them.
Such tactics include slander, defamation, threats, getting close to disaffected or minimally committed fellow activists to persuade them (via psychological tactics described above) to turn against the movement and give false testimony against their former compatriots. They will plant illegal substances on the activist and set up an arrest; they will plant false information and set up "exposure," they will send incriminating letters [emails] in the name of the activist; and more; they will do whatever society will allow.
This booklet in no way covers all the ways agents use to sabotage the lives of sincere an dedicated activists.
If an agent is "exposed," he or she will be transferred or replaced.
COINTELPRO is still in operation today under a different code name. It is no longer placed on paper where it can be discovered through the freedom of information act.
The FBI counterintelligence program's stated purpose: To expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit, and otherwise neutralize individuals who the FBI categorize as opposed to the National Interests. "National Security" means the FBI's security from the people ever finding out the vicious things it does in violation of people's civil liberties.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression
Strong, credible allegations of high-level criminal activity can bring down a government. When the government lacks an effective, fact-based defense, other techniques must be employed. The success of these techniques depends heavily upon a cooperative, compliant press and a mere token opposition party.
1. Dummy up. If it's not reported, if it's not news, it didn't happen.
2. Wax indignant. This is also known as the "How dare you?" gambit.
3. Characterize the charges as "rumors" or, better yet, "wild rumors." If, in spite of the news blackout, the public is still able to learn about the suspicious facts, it can only be through "rumors." (If they tend to believe the "rumors" it must be because they are simply "paranoid" or "hysterical.")
4. Knock down straw men. Deal only with the weakest aspects of the weakest charges. Even better, create your own straw men. Make up wild rumors (or plant false stories) and give them lead play when you appear to debunk all the charges, real and fanciful alike.
5. Call the skeptics names like "conspiracy theorist," "nutcase," "ranter," "kook," "crackpot," and, of course, "rumor monger." Be sure, too, to use heavily loaded verbs and adjectives when characterizing their charges and defending the "more reasonable" government and its defenders. You must then carefully avoid fair and open debate with any of the people you have thus maligned. For insurance, set up your own "skeptics" to shoot down.
6. Impugn motives. Attempt to marginalize the critics by suggesting strongly that they are not really interested in the truth but are simply pursuing a partisan political agenda or are out to make money (compared to over-compensated adherents to the government line who, presumably, are not).
7. Invoke authority. Here the controlled press and the sham opposition can be very useful.
8. Dismiss the charges as "old news."
9. Come half-clean. This is also known as "confession and avoidance" or "taking the limited hangout route." This way, you create the impression of candor and honesty while you admit only to relatively harmless, less-than-criminal "mistakes." This stratagem often requires the embrace of a fall-back position quite different from the one originally taken. With effective damage control, the fall-back position need only be peddled by stooge skeptics to carefully limited markets.
10. Characterize the crimes as impossibly complex and the truth as ultimately unknowable.
11. Reason backward, using the deductive method with a vengeance. With thoroughly rigorous deduction, troublesome evidence is irrelevant. E.g. We have a completely free press. If evidence exists that the Vince Foster "suicide" note was forged, they would have reported it. They haven't reported it so there is no such evidence. Another variation on this theme involves the likelihood of a conspiracy leaker and a press who would report the leak.
12. Require the skeptics to solve the crime completely. E.g. If Foster was murdered, who did it and why?
13. Change the subject. This technique includes creating and/or publicizing distractions.
14. Lightly report incriminating facts, and then make nothing of them. This is sometimes referred to as "bump and run" reporting.
15. Baldly and brazenly lie. A favorite way of doing this is to attribute the "facts" furnished the public to a plausible-sounding, but anonymous, source.
16. Expanding further on numbers 4 and 5, have your own stooges "expose" scandals and champion popular causes. Their job is to pre-empt real opponents and to play 99-yard football. A variation is to pay rich people for the job who will pretend to spend their own money.
17. Flood the Internet with agents. This is the answer to the question, "What could possibly motivate a person to spend hour upon hour on Internet news groups defending the government and/or the press and harassing genuine critics?" Don t the authorities have defenders enough in all the newspapers, magazines, radio, and television? One would think refusing to print critical letters and screening out serious callers or dumping them from radio talk shows would be control enough, but, obviously, it is not.

Link to the master post
https://www.reddit.com/CFB/comments/13rssrf/bowls\_and\_the\_race\_for\_the\_mythical\_national/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3

Setting the Stage

Team Record AP Coaches
Nebraska 12-0 1 (51) 1 (31)
Texas 11-0 2 (3) 2 (3)
Auburn 10-1 3 3
Illinois 10-1 4 5
Miami 10-1 5 4
SMU 10-1 6 6

Important games and other notes
Five teams entered the bowl season with national title hopes. Texas and Nebraska stood as the only two unbeaten, but as SWC and Big 8 conference champs, were tied to the Cotton Bowl and Orange Bowl and couldn't play for a de facto national title. Despite both being unbeaten, Nebraska was a heavy favorite to claim a consensus national title, having spent every week of the season being #1 in each poll. Waiting in the wings were #3 SEC champ Auburn who was heading to the Sugar, and #4/5 Illinois who was heading to the Rose bowl, meaning the top 4 teams in the AP were all heading to different bowls. Independent #5/4 Miami crashed the blue blood party and was paired up in the Orange bowl vs Nebraska.

The Bowls

Cotton Bowl #2 Texas vs #7 Georgia (January 2nd, 1:30pm EST)
The Longhorns path was simple . . . beat Georgia, then tune into to the Orange Bowl and root for Miami to pull off the upset, which would make them consensus national champions. The upset minded Bulldogs had other plans. It was a defensive slug fest, with the teams tied 3-3 at the half. The Horns managed two 3rd quarter field goals to lead 9-3 heading into the 4th. Texas muffed a punt in their own red zone late in the 4th and Georgia capitalized with a a 17 yard touchdown run by QB John Lastinger to deliver the Dawgs to an eventual 10-9 upset. Texas' title hopes were officially gone, while Auburn fans probably shouted "SEC! SEC!" as their conference rival's upset kept their national title hopes alive.

Rose Bowl #2 Illinois vs Unranked UCLA
Illinois spent all of September unranked, before shocking college football, becoming the first team in Big 10 history go 9-0 in their conference slate. They had a slim chance at a national title, needing Nebraska, Auburn, and Texas to all lose their bowl games. Additionally they would need the pollsters to give them more 1st place votes than Miami, which wouldn't be ideal since Miami would have the better bowl win. In any regard, unranked UCLA proved they didn't belong in the conversation in the first place. The Bruins raced out to a 28-3 first half lead and continued to pile it on in the 2nd half, in a 45-9 route. Illinois finished the game with 0 rushing yards.

Sugar Bowl #3 Auburn vs #8 Michigan (January 2nd, 8pm EST)
Auburn entered the Sugar bowl knowing Texas lost the Cotton, but now needed to take care of business and Miami to do the same in the Orange bowl, which kicked off around the same time. If those two things happened, it was assumed the voters would elevate them to #1 in the final polls. Michigan made them earn it. The Wolverines scored a TD in the first and led 7-0 at the half. Auburn used its rushing attack, led by the one and only, Bo Jackson, and its kicking game to claw back in it. Trailing 6-7 with 23 seconds left, Auburn kicker Del Greco made a 19 yard chip shot to deliver the Tigers to a 9-7 victory. I imagine they quickly looked for the nearest TV or radio to see what the Orange bowl result was to see if they're championship hopes were still alive.

Orange Bowl: #1 Nebraska vs #4/5 Miami (January 2nd, 8PM EST)
Tom Osborne was on the precipice of his first national championship as the Huskers head coach. As the #1 team in each poll since the preseason, all the Huskers needed to do was take care of 11 point underdog Miami, in their home stadium and they're your national champs. However, the Hurricanes had other plans. In what is considered one of the best bowl games of all time, it would become a game huge momentum swings. The Canes stunned Nebraska by racing out to a 17-0 1st quarter lead. The Huskers rallied with 14 in the 2nd, one coming off a trick play known as the 'fumblerooski, and then a field goal in the 3rd to tie it at 17. Miami countered again with two 3rd quarter TDs to lead 31-17. Then the Huskers rallied again with two 4th quarter touchdowns. The 2nd TD came on 4th and 8 from the Miami 24. With :48 seconds left to go in the season, three teams' championship hopes (Nebraska, Miami, and Auburn) hung in the balance. Tom Osborne had a decision to make: kick for the tie or go for 2 for the win. Thanks to Texas' earlier loss, in the Cotton bowl, a tie would be good enough for the pollster to vote Nebraska a consensus #1 as college football's only unbeaten. In a decision that would go down in both Husker and college football lore, Osborne elected to go for two to win win the game. Turner's pass to Jeff Smith in the end zone was batted away by Miami's Kenny Calhoun. The Canes pulled off the shocking upset 31-30, and put the college football world on notice as a new dynasty was born.

Final Results

Team record AP Coaches
Miami 11-1 1 (47.5) 1 (30)
Nebraska 12-1 2 (4.5) 2 (6)
Auburn 11-1 3 (7) 3 (4)
Georgia 10-1-1 4 4
Texas 11-1 5 5 (1)
As a husker fan, this is a heart breaker, even if it occurred 5 years before I was born. Had they gotten the conversion, I'd argue this team would be considered on par with the 1995 team. Miami's monumental upset leapfrogged them from #4/5 in the polls to their 1st consensus national championship, and as we'll later see, that was only the beginning. This came much to the dismay of Auburn, who played arguably the toughest schedule in the nation, which included wins over #4 Georgia, #6 Florida (who beat Miami handily), and #8 Michigan. In fact, the Tigers didn't even jump Nebraska, who still received 1st place votes in each poll despite the loss. College football's lack of playoff or sanctioned national championship game was maddening to some but I have to be honest, I think I like the chaos and controversy better. That's what college football is (or at least was) all about.

2023.06.08 06:18 Extra_Entertainer986 I will never understand, so now I just laugh to myself.

So my MIL never makes any sense. She wants all her grandkids around, but to not make messes or be loud. She wants everyone talk, but never negatively. She loves my kids and wants me to come over more but always forgets to ask me when she has a good day. On and on.
I've just come to the conclusion that its better to laugh at all of her contradictions in my head and ear mark them "Things not to do."
The latest entry, treatment of kids once they're adults. So it being grad season the third oldest granddaughter was up. She is now on a graduation road trip with her mom around the state because "Graduate can't do what I (SIL1) did."
SIL1, at 18, went on a week long road trip with her best friend, also 18, to Canada, to spend time with best friends boyfriend, 19, who was living alone. SIL1 went because her best friends parents wanted to be sure nothing naughty happened. Best friends boyfriend got one of his friends to be with SIL1 the whole time they were in Canada.
MIL was fine with this, SIL called home and said she was spending time with best friends, boyfriends, friend, because of course and MIL couldn't have cared less. Even when SIL1 said she was doing things, outdoorsy stuff, that she'd refuse to do with family for years because this boy she just met convinced her to.
But her 2nd son, DH, at 18 couldn't spend time alone with his SIL,(SIL2, brothers wife) because "it could give the appearance of evil"; thats a direct quote from MIL about it, that she said to DH, BIL2 and SIL2. But also according to MIL she has never been mean to SIL 2 and kept the same standards for all her kids 🤔🙄😒
I will never understand how her logic comes to be but I can learn from it and try to be better.
But seriously can anyone see the logic in this? The only difference was that SIL1 had graduated and DH was still in high school.
Another one I love, her feeling uncomfortable with me spending the night at DHs before we got married, because again it could look bad, but completely accepting SIL3, her youngest, not only lived with 3 different boyfriends, but also got pregnant before getting married; on purpose to make the government pay for it - which i only know because MIL told me out of the blue one day. I really didn't care that SIL3 got pregnant before marriage, her life, her choices but finding out why bothered me.
EDIT I made a slight mistake, DH was 17 at the time MIL made comments about " the appearance of evil" and SIL 2 was 19. DHs only defense is SIL1 was an adult so its not like MIL could control her and she wasn't dating the boyfriends friend, so its somehow different and gives no appearance of evil. To which I said "But you being a minor with your adult SIL somehow does?" DH "They're just different situations." I just said ok and went back to what I was doing.

2023.06.08 06:08 aprillikesthings A report on my Camino

This got excessively long, sorry.
I mentioned it here before I left, but I did the Camino de Santiago! I walked from St. Jean Pied-de-Port in France to Santiago de Compostela. Took me about 37 days. I walked about 780km/490miles.
First: It was an amazing experience. Lots of highs and lows, lots of amazing scenery, lots of amazing people, lots of amazing food and wine. If you're thinking of going: do it, if at all possible. At least once a day (usually more) I had a moment of thinking: I cannot believe I get to be here. I cannot believe I get to do this!
I mean, I also got blisters (repeatedly), lost a toenail (possibly two, we'll see), I had a panic over where I was going to sleep that night a few times, the hostels had hard beds and were full of people who snored and people who kept closing the windows no matter how stuffy/hot it was, I've been home a week and I'm still sometimes stiff when I get up after sitting for a while...but it was worth it and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
Secondly: while I really appreciated being able to go to Catholic masses at least twice a week and some of them were very moving, boy did it reinforce that I am Episcopalian and not Roman Catholic. The Vibe is just different. It's entirely possible that some of this is just the way Catholicism is done in Spain or even just that part of Spain, but even Sunday mass seemed...kinda perfunctory a lot of the time? I was surprised at how often they skipped the creed entirely, for instance. Communion was sometimes just put in a bowl that was passed around, and was only ever in one form--the priest drank some wine, but nobody else did. And we almost never sang?! I think there was maybe three times we did more than just a few alleluias before the gospel reading. Almost all of them did a pilgrims' blessing after the service, and the priests varied a LOT in how enthusiastic they were about this. Some just ended the service by reading it off at everyone there, some called us up afterward to ask where we were all from and make sure everyone heard or read the prayer in a language they knew. A Franciscan gave us all small stones with a yellow arrow hand-painted on them (he also preached a great sermon, based on what little English he spoke and what little Spanish I understood, as he went back and forth between languages). A group of nuns gave us colorful paper stars they'd cut out while praying for us. On the other hand, there were two churches where after the service, we got lectured on how the RC church is the only TRUE church of Jesus Christ. At one of them the priest specifically tried to convert me and a lovely retired gentleman who is CofE by telling us only the RC church had real apostolic succession, and I made eye contact with the CofE gent and we both nearly laughed. Oops. (The priest only spoke Spanish and was telling us this through a translator, which is probably a blessing because otherwise I don't know if I could've resisted replying with "Well we're both gay and don't think that's a sin, so I don't think you want us.")
(I did have a print-out of the mass in Spanish and English next to each other that I'd taped into my journal so I could follow along, which means I have learned some Spanish that is useless in daily conversation, lol. I also would pull up the readings for the RC lectionary in English on my phone--and there was multiple times I looked around and other pilgrims were doing the same. In related news: their daily readings are much shorter than the ones in our daily office lectionary!)
Thirdly, and possibly ironic considering my last point, I found that praying the rosary while walking (usually via a recording since I walked with trekking poles lol) was really meditative. I also found that when I was having a hard time walking (because it was hot, because my feet hurt, because I was tired, because I was lonely) it was useful to me to pray a decade of the rosary for other people? I would think of someone I cared about, then go into the Our Father etc, counting off the Hail Marys with my fingers; then think of another person, repeat. This had the positive side effect of loosening my death grip on my trekking poles and preventing numbness in my hands! It's funny that I started doing it as a way of distracting myself when I was not enjoying my walk, but when I look back some of my most spiritual moments were those times I was alone and sweaty and my feet were killing me, because I spent that time talking to God about (and asking the Virgin Mary to pray for) people I cared about. I also prayed for a few people I met on the Camino that I found personally unpleasant. This made it easier to be gracious with them when we were inevitably seated together at dinner another day. I should probably learn something from that, lol.
At churches doing daily mass in the evenings, they often did the rosary a half an hour before that. There was a couple of times that the people there (nearly always a handful of middle-aged and elderly Spanish women) were benignly confused by my presence until they saw the beads in my hand and my well-worn leaflet with directions and illustrations of the sets of mysteries. (I still can't say any of the prayers in Spanish, but at least I can usually tell which one they're doing!)
Third: there's an Anglican church and mission in Santiago! I was in Santiago for Pentecost, and while yes of course I went to mass at the cathedral (no huge incense swinging, alas) I also went to the tiny Eucharist at the Anglican mission--I think there was eight of us total including the priest, who was an American woman. But it was such a comfort to hear and say the words of liturgy that I know by heart. (And see a woman priest!) Her sermon connected the wind at Pentecost to the stream of pilgrims walking into the square in front of the cathedral, and noted that despite our different languages, we pilgrims understand each other's joy upon reaching Santiago.
The mission recently bought a pension (a bit like a small hotel or bed and breakfast) and I *think* they're accepting guests. I'm hoping that within the next few years I can spend some time volunteering there--I stayed in many hostels run by volunteers (sometimes locals, sometimes a church and/or nuns, sometimes another country's confraternity of St. James) and they were often my fave places to stay. More info on the mission: https://www.anglicancentresantiago.org/
Fourth: I saw a ton of really old, really gorgeous churches. It sometimes seemed like every tiny village had a startlingly beautiful church (of the ones that were open--some were only open for mass on Sundays, or twice a month, or not at all). I think the oldest one I visited was the Church of Saint Mary of Eunate from the 12th century, but many churches had bits and pieces that were that old or older. My fave church was the Cathedral in Leon (built in the 13th century), which I paid to get into twice (they kicked us out for siesta) because it was so beautiful I kept crying. The stained glass is just spectacular, but honestly everything about it is gorgeous--the cloisters had a series of fresco paintings from (I think) the 1500's of events from the Gospels and Acts that were natural in expression.
The Leon cathedral had amazing wooden carvings in the choir--every seat has a carving of a person from the bible. Praying the daily office paid off unexpectedly: I recognized Saint Simeon, not from the Latin version of his name, or the fact that he was shown holding an infant Jesus, but because the gold lettering around his head started "nunc dimittus..." I could hear the Evening at the Office recording in my head: "Lord, you now have set your servant free, to go in peace as you have promised; For these eyes of mine have seen the savior, whom you have prepared for all the world to see; A Light to enlighten the nations, and the glory of your people Israel."
Fifth: So, St. James the Apostle. He's alllllll over the Camino, for obvious reasons. So many statues and paintings, from cute cartoony images in logos of local businesses, to heavily-gilded statues in many churches. I admit to being amused at how often he was portrayed as an older man with a beard, because he was (famously!) the first Apostle to be martyred--beheaded by a sword on Herod's orders in the book of Acts. He was mostly portrayed as a pilgrim--a pilgrim's cloak, hat with scallop shell, a walking staff and drinking gourd. In a few churches, he was also portrayed as The Moor-Slayer--on horseback with a sword, about to take off someone else's head. St. James the Pilgrim felt like a friend, St. James the Moor-Slayer definitely did not. St James did not, while alive, kill anyone that I'm aware of; but he's the patron saint of Spain in part because of his miraculous help in a battle against the Moors that historians are pretty sure never happened.
A lot of the legends about St. James in Spain are...unlikely. There's just too many instances of "funny how nobody discovered this/thought to write this down until three hundred years later, when it was useful for the church/the current king."
Which means that I've personally spent a lot of time pointing out to people that while it's doubtful his actual bones are in the cathedral at Santiago, it doesn't really matter--so many people have made genuine pilgrimage to Santiago to venerate him that the place has *become* sacred to St. James, y'know?
But speaking of the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, there's a fascinating contrast between the altar, with its multiple statues of St. James and an insanely over-the-top gold retablo and huge baby-faced angels holding up a gold platform, upon which is an statue of St. James about to slaughter someone; with the actual place under the altar where his supposed relics are kept. You'd miss the way to the relics if it weren't for the line of people. There's a small metal sign saying "entrada" above a humble stone stairway down to a narrow, low-ceilinged space, where there's a couple of steps in front of a metal grille and about five feet between you and a small altar with a fancy silver box on it.
When I went into the cathedral the day I arrived in Santiago there was barely a line, so within a few seconds I was in front of that box. Other people had pushed things through the grille: rosaries, bits of paper with prayers on them.
And there's no way around it: I had a moment of profound awe and gratitude while I was there, along with a sensation of Presence, a feeling best described as "Oh god, what if he's really in there." People were snapping cell phone pics and walking past me as I knelt and tried to just let myself sit in that Presence. But I was also self-conscious of how few people fit in that space and other people wanting a turn, so I left within a minute or two. I went to a side chapel that was open for Eucharistic Adoration, and not knowing what else to do, I prayed the rosary and did the evening Office.
I went back the next day, after the early morning mass. I read to myself the prayer that was in my credencial (which is originally from a pilgrims' guide written in the 12th century), but I changed it all to the past tense and a prayer of thanks:
O God, who brought your servant Abraham out of the land of the Chaldeans, protecting him in his wanderings, and who guided the Hebrew people across the desert, we ask that you watch over us, your servants, as we walk in the love of your name to Santiago de Compostela.Be for us our companion on the walk,Our guide at the crossroads,Our breath in our weariness,Our protection in danger,Our albergue on the Camino,Our shade in the heat,Our light in the darkness,Our consolation in our discouragements,And our strength in our intentions. So that with your guidance we may arrive safe and sound at the end of the Road and enrichedwith grace and virtue we return safely to our homes filled with joy.In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
(This isn't the exact version printed in my credencial, but I'm at work and don't have it in front of me.)

2023.06.08 06:02 LaticusLad Time Marches Ever Onward: Chapter 4

(Any sentences or phrases wrapped with brackets "[ ]" are designated as inner monologue!)
Thank you to u/SpacePaladin15 for creating this wonderful literary universe!
{A shorter chapter for today! Had a little trouble making this long conference as entertaining as I would've liked it to be.}

Memory transcription subject: Cayek, Gojid Linguist
Date [standardized human time]: July 15, 2165
I stared blankly at the image projected before me, questions wrapped themselves around my mind, the confusion was almost suffocating. How could this relic have been carved to depict 4 different sapient species when the most recent of the species carved onto the cube wasn’t even on the galactic stage until a couple years ago? “These images don’t exactly answer our questions. It is intriguing that the artifact depicts modern species but the individuals shown could be anyone. Why choose us specifically?” A woman in a black suit stood from her seat. “The 4 individuals shown on the artifact are all put in specific settings that, though somewhat indirectly, portray aspects of your lives. Cayek, you wanted to leave the hateful and fiery past of your family behind and better yourself, Lemva, you try to flee from your self-hatred by distracting yourself with new experiences, Tassak, you are shunned by both the Federation species and your own kind, and James, you struggle with anger and have difficulty trusting anyone since an old family friend betrayed you.” We sat in silence, mulling over the words we had just taken in.
“How do you know these things?” Lemva asked, befuddled. “You all are attending therapy for your issues, correct? We’ve had to take use of some… unsavory methods, to keep order since Kasinek’s Templars started their little “anti-predator” campaign a while back.” The woman looked across the table at a man sat beside Zhao, seeming to be requesting confirmation to continue. The man nodded, and the woman turned back to us. “As well as your backgrounds, we’ve been monitoring brain activity from anyone that passed the first few checks for applicants. 4 weeks back, when we first recovered the artifact, we discovered an unsettling pattern. Any personnel that spent an extended amount of time near the object started experiencing unnaturally similar dreams. Each report involved the exact same phenomenon, wherein the dreamer would come into contact with what was described as a white dwarf star.”
My blood ran cold as I recalled the night terrors I had been experiencing recently. I looked over at my partners and their expressions conveyed similar emotions. “You’ve been monitoring our dreams?!” Lemva yelled angrily. The woman looked amused, she hadn’t said yes but her expression absolutely implied it. “Yes, unsavory methods, back on topic.” The woman took a seat and placed her steepled hands onto the table. “You 4 have been having identical dreams, despite not being in contact with the artifact. This, along with the other factors we’ve discussed, led us to invite you here to conduct some experiments. The fact that you are all highly trained historians is also a plus, perhaps with your inexplicable ties to the artifact you may be able to find something we could not.” The woman looked around at her colleagues before continuing. “Most of the people here would not like to admit it, but we’re just as confused as you are.”
My eyes glanced over at James and Lemva to my right. James had been silent for nearly the whole briefing, and he still kept that silence now. He looked deep in thought, staring blankly at the surface of the ornate table he was sitting at. Lemva looked displeased at the idea that her thoughts were not as private as she once thought, but there was also a twinge of fear within her that was given away by the way that she flicked her ears and swung her tail. I looked to my left at the Arxur who I had earlier been afraid of. Tassak looked fearful, she clicked her claws rhythmically as she sorted through the contents of her mind. [I highly doubt these people are as confused as we are.]
If we were going to be involved in experiments with the artifact, I wanted to know more about the thing beforehand. “What is known about the artifact so far? Did the Federation records contain any information about where it was obtained, at what time, what it’s made of? That sort of thing. We need to know more if you’re going to be running experiments with us.” A slightly larger venlil in a white lab-coat pulled out 4 holopads before passing them to us. “These holopads contain most of everything we know of the artifact. You can read the extensive reports at your own leisure at a later date but for now I will provide a summarized version.” The venlil sat back in his seat and switched slides on the projector. The image of the artifact and holopad in their cell from before was displayed again.
“The holopad that was kept with the artifact contains records detailing the recovery of the artifact from a desolate planet in a star-system near the edge of Federation space in the year 2010. The star-system, which was designated as Taavon, was planned to be the site of a military outpost to keep tabs on Arxur activity. The planet that the artifact was discovered on, Taavon-C, was chosen as the construction site for a covert listening station. During excavation, the artifact was found along with some buried stone structures. The site was deemed unsuitable for construction and the ruins were set to be demolished after, and I quote, ‘architectural practices considered predatory in nature’ were discovered. A total of 3 antimatter warheads were dropped on the site, and upon surveying the smoldering crater, the artifact was found entirely unharmed.”
The notion that this object had survived a direct antimatter bombardment was absurd to me, perhaps the Feds had it wrong, it was not my place to object though. “That is the extent of the information provided by the holopad, aside from some crap about how the object ‘stood against everything the Federation holds dear.’ Pretentious bastards.” The scientist switched to a slowly rotating 3d model of the object as a background for his next statement. “The rest of the information we gathered ourselves after acquiring the artifact. It has a surface area of 1350cm² and a volume of 3375cm³, it weighs 12.96 kilograms, and is made of an element we’ve never seen before. We’re still deciding on a name for the element. It has been extremely resistant to every single type of energy or force that we can apply to it. High pressures, intense heat, radiation, antimatter, friction, gravitic shearing, all did absolutely nothing to the thing. Hell, we tried blasting it with Q-EUS and all we ended up with was 37 billion dollars worth of energy down the drain and a single shard of the material that barely measured a micron in width.”
The scientist’s frustration rose in amplitude as he listed off the failed tests, before being suppressed by a quick session of deep breaths. “Thankfully, that fragment held a lot of information about the artifact. So maybe it was worth it, I don’t know.” There was a brief pause before the scientist’s monologue continued. “We were able to perform radiometric dating on the shard, and I don’t think you’re gonna believe what I’m about to tell you. When I first received the results I was ready to fire someone for incompetence. But you can’t fail 30 separate tests back to back.” The man paused, taking in our curiosity as we waited. The man hunched over and lowered his voice, to emphasize his next statement.
“The results showed that the material the artifact is made of is more than 20 billion years old.”
