Print not lining up on fabric pieces - what would you do?
This is Ecovero viscose. I very gently hand washed both of these sections of the fabric in cold water then line dried them both. (I cut the length of fabric into two before washing which was probably a mistake.) I cut the first pattern piece (on top), and laid it on top of the other piece of fabric to try and cut an identical second piece - that's when I discovered the print no longer lines up. I pinned around the edges to line up the print, and you can see there is more fabric on the top layer that is bunching up. I tried gently steaming both pieces to regain their original shape, which worked a tiny bit but still distorted (these photos are post-steam). I'm making palazzo pants so I really want at least the front center seam to line up evenly, and for the print to repeat vertically in a straight line.
I figure my choices are: - Try again with the steamer, but more aggressively try to tug/press into shape. If that doesn't work... - Cut the second piece according to the print (just as they are pinned right now) and hope that both pieces stretch/relax enough to their original size and eventually will be identical. Not sure how permanent this kind of distortion is. - Smooth out the two layers so they lay completely flat, and cut the second piece as an exact outline of the first piece even though the print won't line up. - I have about one panel's worth of fabric left that I could try prewashing/drying the same way and hope it matches up with one of the existing prewashed pieces.
Or some other solution I haven't thought of! I'm obsessed with this fabric and practiced making these pants about 10 times before going for the real deal here. 😣 What would you do?

2023.05.31 04:34 Sullengar The Magi's Society - By Sullengar - Chapter 19: The Rust

Mevi was mostly conscious when Kalesi had saved her. The writhing pain was like hot irons under her skin that tried to infect and travel within her blood vessels. Yet as Mevi closed her eyes, in the safety of her mentor’s arms, she felt the light around her disappear and with it a dull cold air enter. The cold was almost soothing against her burning skin. She tried to open her eyes, only to be met with a dark expanse and rushing air as the two traveled at a marvelous speed downwards. After an agonizing amount of time, the fast movements stopped, and the cold chill permeated around her.
The worst of the pain dissipated quickly, morphing from an agonizing fire into a sharp throbbing. Mevi could feel her skin shifting under her clothes, and she ripped at the fabric. Invisible hands seemed to sense her discomfort and helped remove the robes. Those invisible hands, presumed to be Kalesi, attempted to pull free the gloves to no avail. Mevi settled against a cold metal, noticing only now that she was laying down. It was flat and chilled beneath her. Grime and dust seemed to cover it, but the stimulation of the filth was a preferable distraction.
Soon the pain disappeared fully, or at least comparably so. A dull ache throbbed under Mevi’s skin if she moved too suddenly. As her senses became fully her own again, she realized the darkness around her was thick and real. She didn’t like the dark, and wished it away so she could find Kalesi. She wanted the one stable figure in her life so far, the one person that seemed to try to protect her in this short span of time. She wished for light, but remembered the resulting pain from her previous explosion. Her mind almost naturally attuned a dim glow that slowly started to fill the darkness with a warm orange hue.
Mevi and Kalesi were revealed as the slow light crept around corners and up walls. Mevi felt a quiet complaint from her body, but it dissipated as she lowered the strength of the light slightly. Kalesi looked concerned, but only spared a few glances at her pupil. As the light fully illuminated the two, Kalesi moved to the only entrance to their lopsided hideout. She began pulling at weak metal and loose frame, closing a decrepit door to block the outside. Mevi noticed a shrill wind blowing outside that echoed against the metal husk they had made camp in.
Kalesi confirmed the security of the door, and moved to Mevi’s side. Mevi took the chance to glance at her arms. There were dark veins sprawling from her wrists and chest, where her Maige conduits rested against her skin. Before their eyes the dark veins were retreating to their beginning, and most of the bubbling welts had completely disappeared. Mevi was recovering surprisingly quickly, but she didn’t know why that was surprising. Kalesi bent down to inspect her young ward’s skin, “What happened? Do you know?”
Mevi was unsure, “I activated the Maige
I summoned a light in my panic and excitement. It was too strong. I should have tempered it like I am doing now, but I was almost
consumed, by the moment. It was strange.”
“You are at least healing. We escaped the bandits, and both of us are safe. So that is all that matters right now.”
Mevi was curious about her new surroundings, “Where are we Kalesi? It is almost impossibly dark here.”
Kalesi sighed, “We are in ‘The Depths’, or at least that is what I have heard it called. It is an accurate description, if anything.” Mevi’s confused look was an adequate response, Kalesi unconsciously sighed thinking about the situation they were in. “There is a strange, and incredibly dense, layer of
well everything. The Rust, it is an ancient infection of the body, metal, stone, and anything else it touches. It can be dealt with using thorough, and civilized, cleaning methods. But here, they haven’t the tools or means. The Rust eats away at material, then begins to spore like a fungus. Those spores make up the dust, rust, and debris that billow like wind. I have heard it begins to become as thick as water far enough down.”
Mevi was fascinated, and waited for Kalesi to continue explaining. Yet Kalesi stopped and entered a pained contemplation. Turning around, to keep her face towards the door, Kalesi grimly said “This Rust can turn any and all into simple air. It infects a host like a parasite and makes them deranged. Before they are completely eaten away. Then they become one with the infection that claimed them.” Kalesi sat down on a slanted pillar that once stood by the door. The two sat in silence, save for the shrieking wind battering the metal hull of the fallen tower.
After a while of waiting, and silent thoughts, Mevi’s affliction subsided into almost nothing. The black veins receded into nothing, and few hints were shown that they were ever there. Mevi’s skin was as perfect as it is after a fresh wash, save for the growing layer of grime and dust. Kalesi helped Mevi back into her robes, as the chill was beginning to set in. Mevi was wondering what their next step was, and if Kalesi’s expressions were translated correctly she was planning that very thing. Kalesi eventually turned to Mevi, “I think I will let you make our next decision. Despite my initial concern, the ambush left us mostly unscathed. Your ability to recover was faster than I could ever have assumed, or maybe it looked worse than it was.”
Mevi chuckled grimly, “It was quite painful in the moment, but I am fine now I think.”
“Then
Our choices are to continue this Barge-cursed mission, or begin our escape. Both are dangerous, for various reasons
”
A thought plaguing Mevi finally won its way out, “Would we be helping people with our mission?”
Kalesi smiled at her pupil’s undaunted innocence, “Yes, I think. From what I was provided, we need to head towards known population centers. We would gather who we can find, and attempt to evacuate them outside of the Rust’s influence. We shouldn’t have run into any bandits or scavengers, but that is something to report later.”
Mevi thought for a moment, but her mind was mostly recalling the strange exteriors of those ‘bandits’, “I think I would like to continue. This is my first mission, and if we are sent to help people I don’t want to abandon them.”
Kalesi’s smile widened a bit, she tousled her pupil’s hair playfully, “Good choice. If we weren’t sent to help people we would already be returning to the nearest uninfected edge.”
The two were in agreement, as much good as that did in the situation. After resting for a few more minutes, Kalesi scooped up her pupil once again, and they escaped their metallic cover into a sharp breeze. Kalesi looked down to her pupil, and then at the light emanating from her gemstones. Picking up on her mentor’s thought, Mevi silenced her light, and in the shroud of darkness Kalesi traversed the abyss.
From Mevi’s perspective, within Kalesi’s arms, she could see very little. As they suddenly soared then quickly landed, Mevi could see only the briefest impression of ground beneath them. Then they would soar back into the air again, apparently jumping from ledge to ledge. Kalesi’s vision seemed to pierce the darkness in a way Mevi’s couldn’t. Yet as they rose, small pins of light shone above their head like stars. The small stars grew steadily in size after every new leap into the abyssal space. As the light grew, their sources began to move and shift. The most potent light from above stabbed through the shroud laid out by the ambient material created by this strange ‘Rust’. As they grew higher and higher in altitude the shifting storm of debris overhead eventually softened to allow some small amount of light.
Almost suddenly, from the perspective of Kalesi’s powerful leaps, the light flooded back into full view. One ledge there was darkness, with thousands of small pricks of light peeking through the blanket of fugitive dust. Then suddenly, after they landed on the newest ledge, their full view was coated with grimy light again. The swirling clouds allowed the shining ambient light to enter the world once again. Kalesi stopped for a moment, and motioned for Mevi to look down. Below them, only one or two meters, was the thick darkness that created an impassable shield to block light. The winds below were slow and sluggish compared to the virulent storm above. Yet even the above storm held no sway or influence over Kalesi’s strong movements.
The two had evaded the darkness that seemed so permanent just moments before. With their newfound vision the pair began soaring from one ledge to another again. Mevi could now properly see the outline and description of their targets. The massive pipework twisted and spiraled in impossible directions. In every facet of her vision, Mevi saw nothing but rusted metal or twisting pipework. The amalgamation of construction around them made it difficult to discern how far any given target could be, and the swirling gusts of material shadowed any further investigation. Yet while Mevi marveled at the strangeness, and density, of their surroundings Kalesi seemed to know exactly where and how to travel. Despite the intercorse of metal and stone that persisted its confusion, the travel across and up continued after the brief rest for awe.
After several leaps upward, traveling at least one hundred meters after exiting the darkness, the density of construction lapsed. Loosened, and suddenly extremely large, the platforms Kalesi traveled were easier to discern between near and far. The time they spent climbing upwards was twice, if not more, as long as their adventure downward. When Kalesi eventually found a large pipe-road she was satisfied with, and put Mevi on her own feet again, the winds settled to a slow breeze.
Around them was, once again, the vast expanse of metal and stone that descended to unknown depths. The platform chosen to be their path was much wider than the one they were dropped off at. Many meters across, it was more similar to the large winding roads within the city than any type of plumbing. The material transported within such a large construct could only be imagined.
After Mevi had recovered her barings, and was finished exploring the vastness around them, Kalesi readied herself to move. Mevi hadn’t initially noticed, but Kalesi had stopped as if to rest briefly once Mevi was released to the ground. Mevi was concerned, but was waved off quietly. “Don’t worry. I am fine.” replied Kalesi, as if anticipating her questioning pupil.
Mevi was still concerned, she hadn’t ever seen Kalesi winded or truely tired, “We can take a longer rest if you would like. You are the only one who knows where we are going after all.”
Kalesi sucked in air, only to release it in a deep breath followed by coughing, “I can rest while we walk. My wargear is similar to your Maige, I think. Even its more robotic enhancements can tire someone’s muscles. Turns out, ‘normal’ people aren’t meant to soar several hundred meters as fast as we did.”
Mevi couldn’t hold back a small laugh, and Kalesi chuckled herself. The clarity of oddness of the situation seemed to return in lapses to the both of them. She seemed to have fully recovered herself, and the two began walking their path once again. As they walked, Kalesi was noticeably on edge, but smiled when she caught Mevi’s glances. As if to reassure or calm her pupil, while she redoubled her own perception of potential dangers.
The duo walked for a while, and nothing seemed to change. Yet as they continued along the chosen path, the air seemed to become thicker. Subtly, and almost unnoticeable to Mevi, the air made itself denser and slower. Less wind was blowing, as if the materials in the air were actively resisting the billowing currents. What light that shined through was dimmed, where before its ambience was like a clouded day it was now like an evening shroud.
The terrain around them was still perceivable, and Kalesi hung on every motion or noise, but the dark tint continued to thicken. It eventually became stuffy, almost hard to breathe, even with their masked mouths and noses. They continued and as they did Mevi couldn’t help thinking to herself that she missed the open air in the city, despite its claustrophobic towers. Then Mevi realized something, and looked down to her gloved hands. The clear gemstone was dull and dead, deactivated by her own command. She had been trying to maintain a consistent command of suppression on it, just in case her mind wandered and it activated again. Yet now she saw a potential use.
Quietly grabbing at Kalesi’s sleeve, who turned to see what was wrong, Mevi realized she wasn’t sure if they should be talking or not. Pointing at her glove’s gemstone, and gesturing around her, only caused Kalesi to look confused. Mevi’s attempts at charades continued until Kalesi whispered softly, “Mevi, just speak softly. We should be safe for now.”
Mevi summoned her breath, and realized her charades were almost required with the lack of good oxygen, and she managed to squeak a reply, “Should I try to make an air bubble?” Her voice was scratchy and like a prolonged gasp, she didn’t realize how in need of good air she actually was.
Kalesi thought for a moment, “You can try, do not strain yourself. If you revert to your previous condition again I will carry you out regardless of your opinion. Our safety comes before this mission.”
Mevi nodded eagerly, deciding further speech might be too difficult. She focused on the idea of her gemstone, and it pulsed slightly as if to respond. Unsure how to proceed, she tried to summon the idea of pushing air away, or creating wind of some kind. After several moments of nothing happening, Mevi attempted to summon wind around her again but with less conflicted feelings. This time short gusts emanated from her palms, blowing the ground below her. Both Kalesi and Mevi were surprised by the reaction, and Mevi was invigorated to attempt an additional experiment.
Focusing on a single, solid, mental image Mevi held her arms out, palms pointed forward. She imagined a gusting wind to blow away the particles that clustered around them. As she did, the child of wind billowed from her hands, a stream of low current air pushed outward and into the heavy fog. Mevi jumped up in excitement and looked to Kalesi, who was surprised and seemed confused but impressed at the short outcome. Kalesi gave a nod as if to encourage a repeated attempt, and Mevi focused once more. Imagining a current, a bubble of wind, to blow around them and dispel the thick fog. Mevi’s instincts moved her body, she held her hands at her center as if holding some delicate orb. As she focused, air began to swirl in a small concentration around her hands. The effect began to expand as she tempered her desire to explode the effect, she maintained her precise control over her excitement and eagerness.
The bubble of wind expanded beyond her hands, to her elbows, up to her shoulders, and eventually past her knees. Then her entire body was engulfed in a whirling wind that pushed away the heavy fog around them allowing clear crisp air, Mevi began to expand the bubble further when Kalesi placed a hand on her shoulder. Mevi looked up, Kalesi had ducked into the bubble of clean air, “I think this is enough. This is amazing, Mevi!”
Mevi blushed, she was impressed with herself as well, “I think I can make it bigger, so we can both fit!”
Kalesi gripped her shoulder with a warm smile, “I think this is wonderful, and incredibly impressive I might add. If I need a breather I will duck into your little bubble, my lungs are more durable than yours so don’t strain yourself.”
Mevi was still maintaining her hands at her center, and half of her focus was on maintaining the wind bubble’s form, “I think I can do this for a while. I got a headache before I hurt myself with the light.”
Kalesi looked serious when she said, “If you feel that sense coming over you, dispel this air bubble. Or whatever you are doing, unless vitally important.”
Mevi nodded with an excited grin. The strange novelty of this tool was amazing to her, to be able to summon wind without any fan or propeller. No real device beyond her own hands and a strange gem. It defied what she thought possible. Regardless of her prior beliefs, she continued to maintain the bubble of pure air. Maintaining its form eventually became easier, and she could soon walk normally while maintaining its shape. As the two walked, Kalesi occasionally ducked her head in to breathe. The further they traveled into the heavy fog, the less often Kalesi stopped for breath, instead preferring to keep a constant vigil around them.
While the fog was dark, Mevi could still somehow see through the thick material. If this was in part due to her Maige, or the natural feature of the fog, she couldn't tell. As they progressed, it almost seemed like Mevi could see and hear better than Kalesi. Mevi could notice a falling rock, or hear a crumbling strut, before Kalesi’s head darted in its direction. While on a smaller level than before, Mevi’s natural senses seemed heightened again. It was because of this that Mevi could soon see writhing bodies below on a distant pipe-road. Dense with old structure and fallen architecture, it looked like a strange hanging city kept up by old struts and strong wire. Few structures were built directly into the pipes, instead being attached by wire that wrapped around the thick pipe or attached via ancient hanging struts that looked older than the reliant buildings. Mevi could see stumbling bodies on the rusted pathways, shambling forms of various sizes. All slowly moving forward along the suspended walkways and eventually onto the main pipe-road above the hanging ‘city’. The stumbling figures then continued along the pipe, into the darkness of beyond. But as Mevi stared in the direction they traveled, she realized it wasn’t darkness.
The forms of creatures, of people, below were traveling along the metal roads to a great wall of dark. As Mevi quickly realized, it was exactly that; a great wall or cliff stretching impossibly high up. The upper lengths were lost on her, its cliff’s edge was out of sight and well beyond the dark fog’s length. The shambling forms seemed to crawl against, and up, the great cliff. Unnaturally motivated to climb such an intimidating structure.
Mevi pointed down to the movement below them. Kalesi looked hard, and after several moments seemed to spot what Mevi saw. Her eyes strained against the dark fog. Mevi, despite being told otherwise, subtly expanded her air bubble’s reach. The upper edge was now high enough to reach Kalesi’s head at her full height. Now encompassed in the less-corrupted air, Kalesi seemed to spot the bodies gathering below them. Her face fell grim as she seemed to notice something beyond Mevi’s initial survey. Kalesi’s eyes darted back and forth, then beyond to the imposing cliff. Kalesi turned to Mevi, with some amount of sorrow in her eyes, “Mevi I think we should leave. I doubt there are many left to save.”
Mevi was confused, she could see many people down there, and several different clusters of buildings, “Aren’t we supposed to go down there?”
Kalesi seemed to debate with herself, as she sometimes does when determining what to say, “Those people, they are already lost Mevi. Those people are what we call ‘Rusted’, they are infected. Their minds are scrambled, and can only move towards the newest movement or sound. They are herding themselves up the cliff, following each other because the one in front moves and so the one behind follows.”
Mevi looked down with a sadness gleaned from Kalesi. As she peered out towards the several clusters of homes, buildings, and small villages, almost every single one was filled with dark figures. Each stumbling forward with a slow, but unstoppable, progress. What even was this ‘Rust’, it infected people like a fungus? How could so many, who are native to the Pipes, fall victim in such a vast quantity? Mevi searched below, peering into the abyss. As she followed the trails of marching figures, she found an oddity. Far off, further past the largest cluster of population, the figures were marching the wrong way. In much smaller quantities, one or two noticing from the main horde every minute or two, a short line of figures progressed away from the cliff. Mevi was curious, and began to walk carefully up the pipe road. Kalesi followed, sighing out the depression felt in her chest.
The two traveled further along the pipe road, Mevi leading them this time. Kalesi content to allow her pupil to explore this grim reality at her own pace. Yet as Mevi continued along the winding path before her, following the trickle of shambling forms, she noticed something hopeful.
Far detached from the main cluster of population, there was a partially detached pipe coming out of the cliff that was thinner than the rest of the strange colonies. Few bridges led in its direction, and those that did had to wrap and curve around various connected pipes and cliff structure. Yet there was a small collection of buildings, built into the side of the cliff itself rather than hanging against their thin pipe. The cluster of buildings were attached near the base of the pipe that exited the cliff, bent and twisted, yet serving as a main road out and into the Pipes regardless. In the small settlement there was some kind of mounted effort for survival. Mevi could see fast moving figures, many people that were rushing in more directions than forward. At the edge of their settlement there was an attached metal strut that stretched farther than normal. Its wide frame produced a natural road, and on said road were the detached groups of Rusted. Only a few here and there, spaced out by several meters. Accumulating at the metal road’s end, and the entrance of the small settlement. There was a large wall built up, and many shambling bodies tried to rip and climb at the metal protecting the small village.
Mevi pointed out the rebellious natives as they fought desperately against the march of Rusted. Kalesi was in disbelief, she hadn’t noticed the individual Rusted nearly as clearly as her pupil apparently had. Kalesi’s hope was rekindled, and she smiled at her pupil’s discovery. Before Kalesi could congratulate Mevi, Mevi’s head began to throb. Mevi instinctively grabbed at her head and closed her eyes, the sudden wave of nausea and ache washing over her. Kalesi caught Mevi as she wobbled, “Mevi, if your senses are telling you to stop, do it. Do not strain yourself, I can guide us to our goal now. You’ve done well.”
Mevi was glad, she helped in some small way. She allowed her Maige to deactivate, and the clean air was absorbed back into the dark fog. Suddenly very little could be seen other than vague shapes and the dark towering cliff before them. But Mevi had done her part, and will focus on her own recovery so as to help her mentor again. But now they had a clear goal. Their reconnaissance finished, experiments with the Maige underway, and now to move onto evacuation. To finally help people, and to do so with her strange powers however they might manifest. Mevi dedicates herself to master these abilities, and vows no harm would come to Kalesi if her will prevails.

2023.05.31 04:33 Traditional_Mood6163 Hyperspermia and S/o

I (20M) have hyperspermia (overproduction of seminal fluid) which causes mild to moderate pain if I don't cum daily (2 minimum, but I typically go 3+ a day). My girlfriend (20F) is really into the idea of cum control and wants me to not cum for several days before we go on a trip.
We both have a cum kink, so despite my condition I have been trying a modified version of the cum holy grail found on Reddit (great results honestly). She also has been edging me frequently which although very fun in the moment, my balls sometimes ache enough for me to throw up afterwards.
Although I find the idea very attractive and entertaining, I have issues with pain while storing. Does anyone have any tips for preventing pain outside of icing my balls?

2023.05.31 04:31 abomps Help me identify this ingredient from Chinese/Uyghur dapanji (big plate chicken)!

What are these little green slightly translucent balls in a Chinese/Uyghur dish called dapanji or "big plate chicken".
  1. The picture is them cooked
  2. each green "ball" is about the size of a peppercorn
  3. They taste citrusy, almost like lemon but not spicy or numbing at all
  4. if you zoom in the husk/shell is kind of spotted
Here's the picture
https://imgur.com/HmabPrg
Extra details
I bought this dish from a Uyghur restaurant while visiting New York. This dish blew my mind and felt like discovering a new genre of food. I have to try to reverse engineer it as best I can! It was listed as chicken Laghman but given the other ingredients they used a dapanji/ big plate chicken recipe for the base.
I have looked at a few big plate chicken recipes and couldn't find an obvious match for this ingredient.
In some recipes the base broth cooks for 1hr+ and I wonder if some of the spices change appearance or flavor after that time. Brainstorming here, would either fennel seed, or Sichuan peppercorns taste and appear this way after 1hr+?
Any thoughts on what this could are welcome!!!

Example recipe
The recipe that I have seen to include most of the ingredients I could discern is copied and pasted below. Credit to u/mthmchris for the recipe and detailed guide.

"So we wanted to show you how to make Uighur-style of Dapanji, a.k.a. the aptly translated ‘big plate of chicken’.
The Uighurs are a Turkish ethnic group from the Xinjiang province in the far North West of China, and have a fascinatingly awesome cuisine. They've got a solid mix of Central Asian and Northwest Chinese flavors - lamb features heavily, the grill and the tandoor's used, and they have their own version of pilaf (called 'polo' or 'shouzhuafan'). But at the same time, they'll use certain Chinese ingredients and also make use of the wok. This dish is one of the most beloved in the region, and a great place to start with Xinjiang food.
Video is here. We decided to also include in a recipe for those wide kudaimian pulled noodles that’re often served with this
but if you’re not feeling ambitious you could always opt for any sort of thick dried Asian noodles instead.
Ingredients:
One whole chicken cut into pieces -or- chicken wings, ~1.5kg. So really, the ideal sort of chicken for this dish would be an Asian variety of chicken cut into pieces across the bone... and if that's convenient for you, I'd implore you to go that route. If that sort of thing would be difficult for you to get, my sub would be chicken wings. You could cleave them in half, or honestly you could probably leave them in whole as well. I've seen some Western recipe writers call for boneless breast or thigh here, but I really think that's a dramatic reinterpretation of the dish, and you'd also run the risk of dry chicken. Wings aren't too intimidating, and the essence's the same.
Potato, 800g. Cut into large chunks. You don’t want your potatoes to be too small else they’ll end up dissolving into the braise.
Xinjiang xianjiao (çșżæ€’), ~3 minced and reconstituted -or- Hungarian Sweet Paprika, 2 tbsp -or- Sichuan Pixian Doubanjiang, 2 tbsp. So Xinjiang xianjiao is what gives the Dapanji its characteristic red color
this mild chili is super red, and dyes basically anything it touches. Now, this chili’s sort of difficult to source even in China, so substitutions might obviously be necessary. To me, this chili is very similar to a paprika chili
so if you can get your hands on some dried paprika chilis (in China, hongjiao), I think that would be the most ideal sub. Similarly, if you got some quality Hungarian sweet paprika that should also be fine. In China outside of Xinjiang the most common sub is some Sichuan Pixian doubanjiang – you can go that route too, but in my opinion I think paprika would be closer to the original. We also got a real interesting lead on what these chilis might be called in English... see the note below.
White sugar, ÂŒ cup This will be mixed in with a half cup of oil to make a ‘tangse’, or caramel, for the initial step of frying the chicken.
Ginger (㧜), ~2 inches Cut into slices, to be fried together with the chicken.
Sichuan peppercorns (花怒), ~1 tbsp. Added when frying the chicken.
Star anise (ć…«è§’), ~4. Added when frying the chicken.
Cinnamon/Cassia (æĄ‚çšź), 1 stick. Added when frying the chicken. Note that this, just like what you’d get a supermarket in the West, is actually Cassia bark and not the so-called “true cinnamon” from Ceylon.
Black Cardamom (草果), 2 pod. Added when frying the chicken. Slightly crushed to open.
Dried Chaotianjiao Heaven Facing Chilis (ćčČæœć€©æ€’), ~15. A dapanji isn’t set-your-mouth-on-fire spicy, but it should have some kick. Adding in about fifteen whole dried chilis in with your braising liquid does the job nicely (no need to deseed them). If you’re outside China, dried Thai birds eye chilis should work just as well, or you could play around with Mexican chilis (anything unsmoked from the Capsicum Annum cultivar, e.g. Arbols, would likely be fine).
Dried bay leaf (éŠ™ć¶), 1. To be added when braising.
Leek (ć€§è‘±), œ. Cut up a half a leek into strips, these’ll be added about halfway through the braise.
Garlic, 1 head. Peel a head of garlic, these’ll be added when there’s about 15 minutes left of the braise. Note that I add the garlic a bit earlier than many recipes might (most common is to see it added five minutes until it’s finished), mostly because I fucking love munching on garlic that’s been softened in a braise.
Mild chilis, 1 small red chili (çșąèŸŁæ€’) and one small green chili (é’èŸŁæ€’). Cut into wedges. Neither of these chilis are very spicy, so you could also opt for one small green or red bell pepper.
Salt, 1 tbsp. To season. If you’re using doubanjiang in the place of xianjiao chilis, cut this out.
Chicken boullion powder (鞥çȉ), 1 tbsp. To season.
Process, Dapanji.
If using Xinjiang xianjiao chili, finely mince and reconstitute the chili. You’re aiming to get this into a super-fine mince – if you got a food processor (we don’t), I imagine that’d be a help. Once it’s fine enough for you, add in some water – we added roughly two tablespoons. Leave that aside for about thirty minutes - the chili will end up absorbing the water and forming a sort of paste.
Prep your ingredients. I’d use that time to peel and slice your ginger, peel the potato and cut into large chunks, crush the black cardamom pods, cut the leek and mild chilis into strips/biased wedges, peel the garlic
measuring everything out so that it’s good to go once you’re ready to fry.
Blanch the chicken pieces. Blanch the chicken in boiling water for three minutes or so. Because the braise isn’t going to feature much liquid, we’re not going to be able to skim the scum, blood, and impurities from the braise. The quick blanch’ll clean our chicken right up so it’s good to braise.
Make the tangse (caramel). This is a relatively common step in many Chinese braises. To make the tangse, add in a half cup of oil and a quarter cup of sugar to a wok over medium heat. The sugar will begin to melt into the oil, and after a couple minutes it’ll deepen in color to something resembling a caramel. For this stage, it’s important that you stir constantly, and know that tangse can go from zero to midnight real quick. All in all, it’s better to have an overly blonde tangse than a burnt one.
Fry the chicken pieces in with the tangse, then add in the ginger and the salt/chicken boullion. Fry the chicken with the tangse for 30 seconds or so, then add in the ginger and fry for another 30 seconds. Sprinkle with salt and chicken boullion to season – I know it seems a bit strange to season so early in a braise, but things end up getting a bit unwieldy near the end when the potatoes are nearly dissolved.
Add in the xianjiao chili, then the Sichuan peppercorns, black cardamom, star anise, and cinnamon. Add in the xianjiao chili (or some Hungarian sweet paprika, or some Pixian doubanjiang) and coat the chicken with it. Then, add in those spices and let them fry for about 45 seconds or so until it’s all just starting to smell awesome.
Add in 400 mL of water, and nestle in your potatoes, chaotianjiao heaven facing chilis, and bay leaf. Cover and let simmer on low. 400 mL of water might feel like a bit of a small amount (it won’t cover all of your ingredients), but the idea is that the ingredients are going to steam in addition to braise. Because of that, after you cover it you really don’t want to peek. This’ll end up cooking about an hour in total – we still got three ingredients to add (the leek, the garlic, and the mild fresh chilis), so we’ll mix it when we open it up to add those ingredients.
After 30 minutes, add in the leek. At this point, the braising liquid should still look ‘water-y’ and the potatoes should be mostly intact. Toss the leek into the braising liquid, give everything a mix, and cover.
15 minutes later (45 into the braise), add in the garlic. Now the braise should start to look like it’s coming together. The very edges of the potato should be starting to dissolve – if you eat a potato it’ll be roughly cooked through but not very soft. Now, I should note that I add in the garlic a bit early – when I was researching this dish, the Han Xinjiang guy at my market was insistent that the garlic be added at the very end, five minutes before finishing. I like my garlic soft and cooked through so I can munch on it though, so I add in in here.
15 minutes later (60 minutes into the braise), add in the mild fresh chilis. These will only need five minutes or so to cook.
Serve. Serve this with the kudaimian noodles below. Generally, it's best to serve them after you've already munched on the dapanji a bit so that you can get them all in that braising liquid.
Ingredients, Kudaimian Pulled Noodles:
Bread Flour -or- Dumpling Flour (é«˜ç‹éąçȉ), 250g. Basically looking for a high gluten content, we used bread flour.
Water, 125g.
Salt, œ tsp.
Oil. To roll the noodles in before resting.
Process, Kudaimian Pulled Noodles:
Ok, now before we get into this, a quick word of warning: hand pulled noodle making is more of a skill than a recipe. If you’re new to noodle pulling, it might take a few tries to get your noodles right – by far the most common issue is noodles that’re a bit too thick, which I’ll talk about how to save in the notes below.
Disclaimer number two
we’re not the most experienced noodle pullers. Steph’s from Guangzhou (where there’s not exactly much of a tradition of this northern-style hand pulled noodle making), so it isn’t exactly something she grew up with. To give you an idea, about a third of our noodles we had to ‘save’ using the technique in the notes.
In any event, this variety of hand pulled noodles is vastly easier than lamian, so it’s a good place to start. Also, 'Biang biang' noodles are basically the same method, but are divided into smaller pieces and cut in half lengthwise with a chopstick.
Mix together the flour and salt, then slowly incorporate the water into the dough. Rest for 10 minutes. We’ve found doing this by hand is actually a bit easier than using the stand mixer. Add the water bit by bit, kneading and incorporating it into the dough. Once the dough is doesn’t stick to the bowl anymore and has been kneaded into a ball shape, it’s done. Cover with a warm, damp towel and set it aside to let the dough relax.
Cut the dough into eight even pieces, roll them into a sort of fat ‘log’ shape, coat generously with oil, and set aside for 60 minutes. Each one of these pieces is going to make one big noodle – this is like the noodle from KenM’s nightmares. Make sure the logs are coated real well with oil, cover them with plastic wrap, and set it aside for one hour. This second rest is gunna be really critical, if it doesn’t rest for an hour, you’re not really gunna be able to pull them.
Pull the noodles. As always, when I’m trying to explain what to do with dough via the written word, I sound like a convoluted doofus, so take a look at 4:49 in the video for a visual. First thing you’ll do is flatten your log by pressing it down with your palm – the flatter it gets here, the easier it’ll be to pull. Then, grab a hold of the two edges of the log and stretch it out four times. Now this is going to start to begin to look like a noodle. Then, continue to pull and smack the noodle against the table – this smacking motion’ll help the noodle thin out in the center as well. Once the noodle’s roughly as wide as your arm span, you’re finished. Just tear off and toss the little knobs of dough where your hands were pulling from.
Boil the noodle. Boil the noodles until they float. These northwestern style noodles are a bit thicker, so it might take a minute or so.
Note on how to rescue kudaimian that’re too thick:
One of the difficulties with learning hand pulled noodles is that if you screw up, you can’t just roll it back into a ball and start over – it won’t really form because of the oil.
If your noodle’s a bit too thick, use your fingers to lightly spread it horizontally, then pass it through your middle and index fingers with both hands while lightly pressing and pulling to straighten it back out – this motion is at 5:33 in the video. Again, this isn’t really impressive or correct or anything, but it’ll thin out the noodle and everyone’ll be none the wiser (unless you’re, uh
 filming yourself).
Note on other Dapanji ingredients:
So a couple things that we didn’t add that you might see in a few dapanji recipes
 (1) tomato paste (2) some other spices and (3) beer.
So right, Uighurs actually do use tomato paste in some dishes – the brand of tomato paste I buy here in Shenzhen is actually from Xinjiang. You could use half Xinjiang chili and half tomato paste to get that sort of red color if you like – it might be a bit more visually appealing, as our dapanji had a number of red flakes scattered about. We opted for pure chili as we were basing the recipe off of the dapanji of our favorite Xinjiang restaurant in Shenzhen, which didn’t use tomato paste.
Also, if you poke around, you’ll see that each restaurant’ll sort of has their own spice mix. We went with a basic one that was sort of a copycat of a Uighur-run Xinjiang restaurant we love in Shenzhen (plus Bay Leaf). The most commonly added ingredient that we didn’t use would probably be fennel seed
but sometimes you’ll see some places toss some more exotic stuff in too.
Lastly, many of the recipes around Xiachufang (the Chinese AllRecipes) feature a light beer as the braising liquid. Uighurs are Muslim though, so we just opted for water. Beer wouldn’t hurt though, so if you feel like it you could toss that in as well.
Note on Xianjiao Chili:
Again, please don't hesitate to sub this. I figured it'd be almost impossible for people to find abroad, except...
I was chatting with someone on YouTube and I'm now like 70% sure that this is Kashmiri Chili. They look really, really similar, have the same purpose (red color), similar heat level (~1k scoville), and if you look at a map that pathway seems like it makes a ton of sense. You should be able to find them on Amazon - at the very least, even if they aren't the same, I think it'd be a nice sub."

2023.05.31 04:18 diamondsandglass [Ballet] The only ballerina you've ever heard isn't actually that great at ballet

Briefly, I’d like to say I really enjoy reading the content here, but this is my first time trying my own hand at writing a post. If anyone has recommendations for improvement I’d be happy to hear them. There is so, so, so much drama in the ballet world, so hopefully this will be the first in a series of sorts. I’ll try to keep it relatively light for my first post, but this write-up will include some mentions of racism. Also, apologies for any formatting issues, I am on mobile.
With that being said, let’s get on to the drama.
What is ballet? I’ll try to keep this part brief. Just in case you haven’t heard of it, ballet is a heavily codified and strict form of dance rising out of France in the 17th century. It traveled all around Europe, and eventually the world, changing and taking shape along the way. In the late 18th century some absolute sadist decided that this art would look even better if the dancers had to do everything balanced on the top of their toes, and thus the pointe shoe was born, defining the style to this day.
What is Swan Lake? In the 19th century Russia was the place to be for ballet. Tchaikovsky was writing his greatest music for the royal theater, and working with him was the genius choreographer Marius Pepita. In 1870, this collaboration would lead to a little work called Swan Lake. Swan Lake is one of the most famous ballets of all time, eclipsed only by The Nutcracker. It is a big display of feathers and drama and death and I love it very much.
The plot revolves around a woman who has been cursed to turn into a swan, and the prince who falls in love with her. Unfortunately, the prince is tricked by an evil swan woman who dances so seductively that he promises to marry her instead. This confusion leads to the good swan being so heartbroken she simply cannot live on, and the ballet ends with her tragic death. I know this plot sounds batshit insane, but the dances are so beautiful it kind of helps you forget that. Traditionally both of the lead swan roles are played by the same dancer, which is a massive challenge not just because she will be on stage for ~2 hours, but also because the evil swan (referred to as the black swan or Odiele) has a famously difficult section where she has to do 32 of the same turn. In a row. Put a pin in that for a moment.
Who is Misty Copeland? Misty Copeland is possibly the most famous ballet dancer in the world right now. If you forced someone on the street to name a ballet dancer, it would either be her or Natalie Portman in that one movie. Misty became famous as the first black ballerina promoted to a principal dancer at American Ballet Theater, the de facto national dance company of the U.S. This was a huge step forward for the ballet world, especially notable for the fact that it took waaaaaayyyy too long to happen. Misty was promoted to principal in 2015, the first black dancer to achieve this in the company’s 75 year history.
Misty is not the first black ballerina in history, but she did break a major boundary for future dancers. It’s no secret that the ballet world is stiff, slow-to-change, and overwhelmingly white. Her success was in spite of the conservative powers that be, and made her a huge inspiration to many people. Misty capitalized on this, doing magazine interviews, social media campaigns, and writing several books. She is certainly a groundbreaking ballet dancer.
But is she a good dancer?
that’s a very controversial question. She’s obviously better than the average person, but most dancers would argue she doesn’t stand out from other professionals. Her technique and virtuosity are not what is remarkable about her, and her dancing itself isn’t what made her famous. The problem with talking about this is that conservative ballet people also use this as an excuse to tear down a successful black dancer. It is difficult to distinguish someone that has good faith concerns about her qualifications from someone that is pretending to have concerns in order to voice their racist opinions on her. This had been simmering under the surface for her whole career, but really came to the head in 2018, when Copeland was called to perform the lead role in Swan Lake on a huge international tour stop in Singapore.
Black Swan Remember that pin from earlier? We’re bringing it back. Copeland had performed Swan Lake many times before, including in the lead role, and reviews were mixed. The consensus matches up pretty well with general comments about her dancing, that she’s an average-good performer, but her jumps and turns are underdeveloped and her technique is rough around the edges. Her performance in Singapore overall reflects this, with one glaring issue. The 32 turns.
This is probably the most famous danced section of the ballet, and definitely the most famous piece for the black swan. As mentioned above, Misty is not a very strong turner. She often substitutes in simpler moving steps instead of turning in the same space, as Swan Lake demands. The Singapore performance is particularly rough, and unfortunately someone in the audience that night was filming. Apologies in advance for the poor video quality, but obviously this was a bootleg.
For reference, here’s a whole bunch of other dancers doing the same section- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEX_KCIBV9o And now here’s Misty- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqqya96rkss
Misty is obviously off-center from the start, having to hop and slowly drifting across the stage for the turns she does complete. Rather than resetting and finishing out the sets she completely gives up at 17 seconds in and substitutes in a different step. This was not a one-time change. There is additional footage from other performances that show the same thing, replacing at least half the turns with other, simpler moves. It’s clear she can’t do 16 turns in a row, much less the full 32. It had been known to the ballet world for a while that Misty wasn’t an amazing turner, but having video proof made the whole thing start spiraling beyond that.
Responses The backlash started out on small ballet forums, and then spread to blogs and other news outlets. Various reputable sources and also the Daily Mail wrote articles about how embarrassing the video looked for Copeland. The media narrative was quick to get negative, and Copeland is nothing if not media savvy. She had to make a response. And that she did.
Misty chose to respond to a particular negative comment on Instgram-https://www.instagram.com/p/Bg3VEi2hWc-/?hl=en&taken-by=mistyonpointe Her response is fairly long and eloquent. She points out that she has never claimed to be the best dancer, and that she is grateful to even have the opportunity to perform this role. She also highlights the importance of artistry and storytelling to ballet as a whole. This response kicked off a second wave of media responses, mostly gushing clickbait articles supporting Misty unquestioningly. Most people called the performance an “off day”, saying it wasn’t representative of her dancing as a whole.
Conclusion For the ballet world, this was a huge story. However, the ballet world is not that big or important to most people. The whole thing was easily swept past, an article or two were posted online and everyone acted outraged for a few days. It hasn’t had a meaningful impact on Copeland’s career, she’s still dancing with ABT and as mentioned is massively popular. She has recently taken a break from performing, but is still very much a part of the company and will probably get more opportunities to perform Swan Lake in future. Anyone that doesn’t like her will just have to die mad about it.
Additional reading In case you’re interested, I got a lot of my additional info here- https://balletfocus.com/misty-copeland/ The writer is not a professional dancer, but does work closely with the ballet world and wrote one of the more comprehensive and unbiased accounts I could find. Most news outlets that covered the story are either exclusively covering Copeland’s response or just designed to tear her down. I’m not interested in trashing her reputation or calling her a terrible dancer, and I don’t want to link to anyone that’s doing that either.
I do think there are other black dancers that deserve to have as much praise and adulation as Copeland, and it’s frustrating that she alone gets so much media attention. However she has done a lot of good with her platform, and her outreach to young dancers especially is really admirable. If you have a little dancer in your life, consider reading them one of her picture books. Or hey, go to a local dance performance! There are thousands of talented dancers in smaller regional companies that don’t ever get the kind of attention American Ballet Theater generates. Having public support is what keeps dance going, whether you’re an intentionally famous principal or a local beginner.

2023.05.31 04:00 RichardK34 Hallucination after Revelations

I wanted to share a personal story that I was strongly advised not to tell anyone by my father.
This will absolutely make me sound insane to most of you but I know what I saw and what I felt and I will never forget it. This will always be one of the most important moments in my life.
In the summer of 2022 I was on my apartment balcony listening to the book of revelations read by Alexander Scourby on Youtube. My family was sound asleep inside. It was after midnight. This was the King James Bible.
I was not high, I was not drunk. I was stone-cold sober.
As Scourby was reading about the end of everything, I came to the realization that Armageddon was a metaphor for how humanity destroys itself after willfully giving in to sin. It was describing the events of what would take place and that no child, or woman would be spared. It warned that the wrath of God would have no mercy and that people of true faith should head into the mountains, and even they too may not be spared. I had a graphic vision of what this might look like as men and women were killing each other in the streets, children too. This however, was not my vision.
The truth of what I was hearing shook me so badly, my heart began to beat faster than I have ever experienced. My hands became sweaty and my head felt dizzy.
I stood from my chair, and an image pulsed into my vision. I saw it in front of me, clearly. I could not blink as I was in disbelief of what I was seeing.
My entire field of view disappeared and the only thing I could see were these giant feathers, but they had eyeballs in the center of them. I could no longer hear the Youtube video or anything else for that matter. It was dead silent. The colours I experienced are hard to explain, but the feathers were pure white. The edges of them were outlined in black and it almost appeared as thick fur. The eyeballs were also just black. The colours were transparent like an image projected behind what I was seeing. It's so difficult to explain this. Each feather had One black, furry outline with an oval inside, and inside that oval was an eye; Pitch black. Dozens of them staring into me. They shook and pulsated with every beat of my heart, and after every beat, they were getting closer.
I began to weep uncontrollably and when I turned to go back inside I was wasted drunk. I was actually drunk, though I had not had a drop of alcohol. We barely ever drink here. I left my phone on the balcony still playing the video.
I was terrified and had to feel my way back into my apartment through the balcony door.
I stumbled like a drunkard to my couch which was only a few steps from the door, and laid down. I had to keep one foot on the floor to prevent myself from vomiting. The image was still there. It got closer and closer until it went through me. I began taking deep breaths, and after what seemed like 5 minutes, I stopped weeping, my heart stopped pounding, and I was covered in sweat. I stood up and I was no longer drunk, but all I wanted to do was bathe.
I immediately went to the shower and just stared at the floor while the water washed over me. My family remained asleep.
I finished The Bible on youtube the following day because I was too scared to continue listening after my shower.
I did not sleep that night, and when it was appropriate to call my father the next morning, I did.
He told me not to share this with anyone.
It feels freeing to tell this story.
I understand some people will think this is total BS and that's okay. I know what I saw and it completely dismantled me in that moment.
I have not experienced this since and I have never been the same. I don't know what I saw but it knew me deep down inside and I could not hide from it. This experience changed me, forever.

2023.05.31 03:23 jbullydawg Eldritch Knight @ 8th Level

I posed this very question not too long ago but wanted to come back to this now that we have been told to advance to level 8. I didn’t give very much information in the other post, so I wanted to give a more full-throated overview of my character, as it stands now, and ask for advice on next steps for my character. And thanks to all that provided advice in my previous post.
We are playing Tomb of Annihilation and are at the place where are about to enter into the Tomb of the Nine Gods.
I am playing a Male Leonin named Emmanuel of the Windsong who hails from the higher elevations of Oreskos, so cold is a feature of this character. He is still a young guy but His desire in life is to become the Champion of all Oreskos. The many clans of the race come together each year to bring their individual champions to fight and Emmanuel wants to be the ultimate champion one day. He has taken a strange path by incorporating magic into his skills in the hopes it gives him the edge he is looking for in the ring.
STR 20 DEX 14 CON 14 INT 16 WIS 12 CHA 8
Eldritch Knight Fighting Style - Defense
Saving throw proficiencies - STR and CON Skills proficiencies - Animal Handling, Investigation, intimidation, perception
Splint Mail (my AC is 18) GLAIVE +2/+2 Crossbow Ring of X-ray
Spells: Cantrips - Ray of Frost, Blade Ward Find Familiar (snow lynx named Anya) Magic Missile Chromatic Orb Shield Rimes Binding Ice
So, with the move to 8th I was thinking Misty Step as my next spell but aren’t married to the option. My wife wants me to add two points to INT but others have recommended a feat. What are your thoughts on what to do at 8th? I get a new spell and either a feat or ability score improvement. Thank you!

2023.05.31 03:10 SilvoKanuni I Shall Return With the Tide - Barnam Pt. IV

A single, lone hill jutted from the ground, the only rise across the flat plains around the river Luzum. Was it a hill or a glorified mound? Either way, looking south it was the only place to get a view of the plains, of the river. Of the greater city on its banks. Ibandr.
On the hill sat a man on the bare back of a horse. A breeze from the south, coming a long way from the river at the edge of his vision, whipped his matting of hair in a gentle flicking. His beard, short but shaggy, stood firm on his face, smooth save for the occasional scar or burned mark. The man wore hemp coverings around his shoulders, his waist, down his legs, wrapped loosely with gaps where the wind billowed them to life. He frowned as the wind picked up, hair whipping in the breeze, and reached into a bundle across his shoulder. He pulled out a long cloth and wrapped his hair in a practiced fashion, wiping sweat from his brow once he was done.
“Barnam,” the man turned as another on horseback rode up to him, “we shall be ready soon.”
The man, Barnam, nodded. “At sunset, then.”
“At sunset,” and the other man turned his horse to trot back down the hill. By the hillside, around a hundred horses and men stood, wiping their horses, smoothing stone blades, copper scythes, or long wooden spears. They talked, some joking and laughing, others grave and serious, trading old stories of war or raiding or famine. Barnam looked at them, an absent smile on his face. His family.
“Your father is dead,” his mother had said. Her hand was on his shoulder, other hand on his cheek. He stood on bare, loose dirt, his toes wriggled in the crumbled land. Above him the sky had been cloudy but the sun, when it broke through, was strong and piercing, threatening to push any man or woman who stood against it back into the ground.
Barnam the boy had felt all these things. Yet his soul was in free fall. Down, down, down he fell, screaming a silent scream at the top of his lungs, the word echoing around him, his mother's voice, his father's voice, his voice clanging in a cacophony as he fell ever forward, ever down, into a great abyss of being. The one word over and over, louder and louder, until it was the only thing he could hear and could ever hear: dead.
Not ‘out along the river.’ Not ‘in the outer world.’ Not ‘passed to the ancestors.’ Dead. Your father is dead.
Barnam the man remembered how Barnam the boy felt that day, and he shuddered on his horse as if his soul was back in that free fall, weightless in terror and sorrow and grief. It had been shortly after they crossed the river Duf, into the lands and tribe of the Albayet, that they learned of his father’s death. Barnam remembered little but knew someone had come to them to tell them. One of Hadr’s friends who owed him some debt, chasing after the mother and son to bring them nothing but news of death. The Albayet welcomed them, his mother had always had a silver tongue. She told them of Ibandr, of their troubles with the Zivold, of Hadr and his insistence we come to them, to find Artanr, Harald, and Pulti, to find shelter. To find refuge. To find a home. Yes, the Albayet had welcomed them with open arms. Pulti, especially, had taken to Barnam as if he was his own son.
The horse bellow him snorted, shaking its head at a buzzing fly. Harald became Zivold of the Albayet, his wife Adari the Linezold. Barnam found it odd that both were venerated at an equal status. He barely even remembered who the Linezold of Ibandr was, the wife of the Zivold seldom making grand or luxurious appearances like he did. Once or twice he noticed her at one of Hadr’s festivals but never more. Barnam sighed. He traced his face with a free hand, the other holding onto his horse’s mane. One scar traced his cheek. The first time he had taken a life, the man who threatened him and his mother when he had just reached his thirteenth year. A burn on his cheekbone, one that never healed when they were set upon by another Anug tribe on horseback, wielding fire as well as blade. Many others, some healed, some not, from his years and years with the Albayet. Life was harder on the eastern end of his known world than it had ever been in Ibandr. They farmed as his father and mother had in the city, yes, but the harvests were never trustworthy, forcing him and the Albayet to rely on horsemeat and raiding other villages as much as they relied on the grains of the earth. No Sinnamit guided their festivals, their worship, their healing, their scholarship, only the Zivold and the Linezold, husband and wife of the peoples, were the way forward.
These easterners were much more at home on horseback the city residents. In Ibandr, men only ever rode when guiding their horse herds through the city or out to the river to graze. Here it was an every day occurrence. Hunting or traveling was done on horseback. Times of leisure or work were done on horseback. Even when farming, a horse was typically nearby, with some strange folk ever tying hoes to their horses and walking them along the field. Silliness of the east. The Albayet never were too far from their horses.
Twenty-four summers passed since he and his mother, fatigued and starved and parched, had wandered into the Albayet village and placed their lives into their hands. Here they were sheltered, his mother taken care of and remarried, Barnam raised and trained in the ways of the easterners. They spoke the same and yet different. Some words felt as though he stuffed cotton in his mouth, his tongue working this way or that, making sounds he’d never heard before and hearing the locals laughing at him. Other times he’d feel like he was stretching his jaw out, long and thin. Some j’s sounded like y’s, some words pressed together, some cut in half. But his mother insisted that, when alone, they only spoke as they did at their home. “Our grandmothers are all around us. They follow us on our journey through the darkness. If you forget to speak as they did, how will you speak to them? Only then will they truly go to the Outer World.” She always insisted to hold on to their language, but embrace the Albayet and become as their own.
Through the years Barnam had made some journeys back to his home city. “Your life was stolen from you,” Pulti had told him, long after he had married his mother, “your father’s life was stolen from you. Let me help you, my son, let me help you right your wrong. There is a blood debt here, the worst debt of a father's murder, that can only be paid in one way.” Pulti urged him to think about returning to Ibandr, not as a visitor but to reclaim what was owed to him. The life of Ibandr’s Zivold.” He thought about those words, that mentality, the feeling of a wrong needing to be righted, as he moved through the town posing as a traveler from afar. He’d shake his head when the citizens asked him questions. Where are you from? Who are you with? What are you doing here? He bartered for fish and stone in exchange for horse meat and milk, but all the while he watched and he listened. Three times he made the journey to Ibandr, and each time he learned more.
The Zivold had relegated the Sinnamit to the role of speaker. When the Zivold emerged from the great storehouse of Ibandr, Hadr was there, older than ever, announcing his presence and what would be done in the city that day. Hadr called him not just the Zivold, but the Lord guided by Kutenr, the Paroxl of good harvests and lifesaving flooding. He would here Hadr bellow, "And here is Attarnap, Zivold of Ibandr, Lord guided by Kutenr, Savior of the World, Chosen by Anakinr and blessed by Samvastatn. Life be given to Attarnap, who stands before you in front of the Temple of Kutenr. Life be given to Attarnap, bow to his presence." All around Barnam, the citizens of Ibandr lowered themselves on the ground, kneeling and touching their faces to the ground. He learned quickly to do the same, gritting his teeth to bowing to his father's murdered.
But he couldn't help but think how the Temple of Kutenr had come to be. If the storehouse had been great before, it was grand now. The circular building flanked by long stretches of rectangular rooms was gone. A long, rectangular building, big and empty for the storage of an unbelievable amounts of grain stood in the middle of the city. At the end of it sat a great mound of a building, what Barnam came to learn was the new temple. It was slowly being built with mud-bricks by a group of laborers, a great big pile with four sides pointing to the sky carved on one side with majestic images from Hortens lore and painted on another side with images of what Barnam came to understand as the Paroxl. Along the edge of the great storehouse were circular, two-story buildings with openings in the middle. Barnam made his way into one, empty at the time, and saw stairs leading up to a second floor and an open window to a small, central courtyard. A great amount of room inside and furnished so as to seem like it was the living quarters of the Sinnamit, the Zivold, or those he preferred most.
The buildings around the city center had transformed as well. Gone were the small clumps of buildings, one-storied in varying cascading heights. Now the houses had been replaced and were all similar in size and shape: two-storied, rectangular houses longer than they were wide, built at regular intervals with space in the middle. Some homes had shades built out of mud or wood - rare as it was - or simple hangings of hemp in between the houses, where the citizens sat and worked in the outdoors, speaking to one another or calling out to workers on the roofs. He had made his way back to his old home, finding it gone and replaced with these larger buildings, larger homes to fit the growing city. When Barnam had been a child, the channels they carved only extended as far as his home. But the last time Barnam visited Ibandr, maybe one summer before today, the channels went out twice as far, home going further and further than Barnam could have ever dreamed.
Even now, as Barnam stood on his hill, he saw what appeared to be a piece of the river sitting outside of the city. It shimmered in the sun, a large pool of water where only one summer ago there had been none. Had that been the Zivold’s doing as well? What wonders were being built by that murderer’s fist? What was the purpose of this reservoir of water? He shook his head. He would have to ask the Zivold when he met him, before he got what he was owed.
The sky rumbled in the far distance. The boy who became a man looked left to the east, seeing a darkness of clouds emerging where once there had been little. To the west the sun was low, grazing the far reaches of the river, going low to light the lands of the Outer World for the night. Barnam took his horse and turned it around, back down the hill to the others. It was time to set out.
Context: Don't mind me just doing some internal conflict. Barnam was raised by the Anug and grew to be one of them. But his mother and adoptive father urge him to take revenge on the Zivold and the city. Ibandr has grown in the mean time, swelling in size and population. The Zivold continues to maintain his hold on the city and has been able to organize the structure of the inner city, while the outer grows further and further beyond the river. A, large to them, pyramid-shaped mound has been erected and is called a temple, though it's solid through and more of a landmark than anything else.

2023.05.31 03:04 howsweetfreshmeat Season 1 Re-watch Notes! Anything to add? Let's talk about it

I spent the past week re-watching S1 and I wanted to share my insights. I didn't include any repeatedly discussed theories (Ex. Antlers behind someone, clues that someone might die such as Jackie saying she's cold, etc.) But I do apologize if there are any repeat theories here. If you remember a post you made with a correct theory pleaseeee link it!

Spoilers for Season 2 are included here.

Pilot- (The start to my obsession) Not much in this episode that hasn't been mentioned by our awesome sub.
Jackie inadvertently caused two main issues.

F Sharp

The Dollhouse

Bear down-

Blood Hive

Saints

No Compass-

Flight of the Bumblebee

Doomcoming
I'm not on board with "they were dead the whole time," theory but if you are, there are a couple of comments in this episode that might sway me-

Sic Transit Gloria Mundi
Aaaaand that's all I got! Thanks for reading if you did. A re-watch of Season 1 was a blast and I can't wait until season 3. I hope this post is as interesting to you as it was for me to make over the last few days! buzz buzz buzz.
TLDR: there is none I'm sorry. ;)

2023.05.31 03:00 cificaPeroMeB SBD Damasteel Apex for 335 - Kizer Hic-Cup with dyed scales

Timestamp
First up is my dama Sharp by Design. Never understood why these are so CRIMINALLY underrated just because the clip pokes you if you hold it in just the right spot but just a tiny bit of repositioning of your hand and you can bare down on it all day no problem. Like trust me this knife is the furthest thing from uncomfortable despite what you might have heard. The clip has some marks on it and the blade has some faint micro scratches (both shown in pics) that are only visible at certain angles, and I can't see any marks anywhere on the handles so overall I'd describe the condition as lightly used. Put a new really nice 17 degree edge on it and haven't used it since so if you ever plan on resharpening then you won't have to spend the hour or so I did reprofiling due to how high of an angle the factory edge was. Zero blade play, pivot lash, or detent lash. Lockup is about 30%. Disassembled once to clean and oil. Centering is perfect. Action is just out of this world especially with the spydy flick, like literally the single number 1 best reverse flicking knife I've ever handled PERIOD. Comes in original box.
Asking $335
Apex pics
Second is my Kizer Hic-Cup. A fun little fidgety knife in 154CM and micarta that I dyed a nice maroon ish color that imo just looks so much better than the original tan/gray. A few micro scratches on the blade that's shown in the video but nothing major, plus I don't think anyone is buying this to safe queen anyway lol. Centering is perfect, lockup too. Has just a tad of lock-stick but doesn't every budget button lock amirite. Factory edge that's still nice and sharp.
These retail for $82 but I just don't find myself reaching for it so you can have it for just $45
Hic-Cup video
Feel free to request more pics/videos of anything. Chat > PM please no Trades
Thanks for looking !

2023.05.31 02:41 SoraDonaldGoofy99 Challenge Dex 56: Seaking

FUCK YEAH!! SEAKING!! LET'S GO!! WOOO
Up to Brock: Moveset: Peck, Tail Whip I may have gotten a Seaking by the end, but I started with it's less awesome base form Goldeen, as is my usual purpose. Having Peck made Bulbasaur pretty easy, though. Not even mad. I also had a pretty easy time against the Bug Catchers, and I even came back to deal with Gary 1A. That fight still wasn't bad with a Goldeen with only Peck. I barely had to ever use Tail Whip. I had a little trouble against Buzz, but with Tail Whips and enough lack of Sand-Attack, I beat him. It also took more grinding to beat Geodude and Onix, but by spamming Tail Whip enough through Defense Curl, I took out Geodude, and once Onix's defense was low enough, I won.
Up to Misty: Moveset: Peck, Tail Whip, Supersonic, Water Gun Goldeen did unexpectedly take off after taking a while to grind on Brock. Unfortunate thing... I wasted all my Poke Balls trying to catch one Pidgey. I knew I could come back from it, though. The game rubbed it in my face by giving me a first encounter Paras in Mt. Moon. Of course it had to. Son of a... UGH! I fought the Grass Lass and the Hiker before the required Rocket and the Fossil Nerd. I chose the Helix Fossil. Still sure I have offended both Lord Helix and Lord Dome. No one ever speaks of Lord Amber, though. Might do that when I finally do Aerodactyl. Once I left, I caught a Spearow after I left Mt. Moon. I took a chance and tried Misty out. Turned out Supersonic and Tail Whip got me through that fight entirely, and it's good that Misty only uses X Defends once per Pokemon. FUCK YEAH!! I channeled the America song for this one.
Up to Surge: Moveset: Peck, Horn Attack, Supersonic, Bubblebeam Because Bubblebeam was so much more powerful, Gary 2 wasn't worth talking about. I did get Horn Attack on the way to Bill's as well. And having Peck for this point was quite different for me, it's usually gone by now, but I don't have a lot of moves. As I went through the S.S. Anne, I leveled up a bit to prep for Surge. I took out everyone on the eastern side of the boat, got the Max Potion, the extra Ether, and even Rest, which I sold later. Gary 3 was still... NOT A PROBLEM. Pidgeotto died to Bubblebeam, as did Raticate, Horn Attack killed Kadabra, and a few Pecks got Ivysaur out of the way. I got Cut for an Oddish I found along the way, and then used Dig for a Diglett. Once I got to Surge's gym, Bubblebeam killed Voltorb, Horn Attack gored Pikachu (yes, still sore about what happened to Shellder), and I blasted Raichu with Supersonic, which worked as I spammed Bubblebeam. I even took a Thunderbolt, lived, and killed Raichu off. FUCK YEAH!
Up to Erika: Moveset: Ice Beam, Double-Edge, Supersonic, Bubblebeam Nothing leading up to Erika became much of a concern either, not even Gary 4. I could have gotten Swift, but chose to ignore it. Horn Attack was still enough to beat Gyarados. Why? Because I got... FUCK YEAH SEAKING as I was going through Rock Tunnel. Still took Ivysaur out with Peck. This damn move held on for so long. I had Drill Peck by now with both Fearow and Dodrio. Or close to it. As to why I kept Supersonic... I couldn't say. Not much reason to have it. Either way, you could guess Giovanni 1 and the Rocket Hideout were super easy, and you'd be right. I gave Seaking a lot of Calciums afterwards, and then got Ice Beam for myself. And used Double-Edge because it's way stronger than Horn Attack, fuck recoil, I'm a Seaking! was the mentality I went with on this run, boys and girls and non-binary pals! I then went to Erika, and while I took a reset, or two, Ice Beam carried me through it.
Up to Koga: Moveset: Ice Beam, Double-Edge, Supersonic, Surf I had a brief stint with Seaking's signature move, Waterfall, too. I was able to use it to reliably get through Pokemon Tower when I got there. After I got through Ghost Marowak and the Snorlax however, I went to the Safari Zone for Surf, got it, and headed for Koga's gym. The power of FUCK YEAH SEAKING continued to shred through the gym with the combination of Surf and Ice Beam. Double-Edge helped when needed, because fuck recoil, we have a Seaking! The Koffings and Muk meant nothing to me as Surf washed away their toxins. And finally, Weezing reared his ugly heads. After I landed a Supersonic, he blew up. BUT I LIVED! FUCK YEAH SEAKING!!
Up to Sabrina: Moveset: Same And again, Rival Fival/Gary 5, no fucking problem. Maybe 1 reset. I had to level up slightly going through Sliph Co. My man leveled up quick enough for it to not be a concern, and even Venusaur couldn't tank an Ice Beam, and Gyarados had to live one, but got Double-Edged out! Pidgeot meant nothing, Growlithe was a piece of cake, and even Venusaur died to Ice Beam. I still had to pick up Lapras for Strength, but it was fine. Giovanni 2 died to Surf, and Sabrina died to Double-Edge and Surf combined.
Up to Blaine: Moveset: Ice Beam, Double-Edge, Blizzard, Surf Didn't see much more use for Supersonic, especially since I barely ever touched it, so I replaced it with a move I would use, and perhaps the first time I had both on the same moveset. Not that it mattered here. Each one of Blaine's Pokemon was washed away by the tsunamis that I could summon. JUST LIKE THE AMERICAN NAVY FUCK YEAH!
Up to Giovanni 3: Moveset: Same SURF'S UP MY MAN!
Up to Gary 6: Moveset: Agility, Double-Edge, Blizzard, Surf I had to use Rare Candies here, and when my first attempt did kind of highlight how keeping Ice Beam for a bit longer than I normally do could still help, I admit I am a Gen 1 Blizzard fanboy. Still kept it, even after I learned Agility, too. The Agility setup made all the difference, however. Especially with the larger EXP thresholds that make it harder to level up mid-battle, which ruin the Badge Boost Glitch. I guess going this long without relying on Badge Boosts is somewhat remarkable, but many Pokemon can. This is SEAKING though!
Elite Four: Moveset: Same FUCK YEAH! The final battles! I actually did pretty good here.
Lorelei: After Agility setup, Double-Edge did well against Dewgong, and I surfed out Cloyster because of his HUGE defense. Double-Edge can take care of Slowbro and Jynx, but I saved them until the end for Lapras, so I tried to Surf it out at first while fighting through Confuse Rays, but it eventually worked.
Bruno: Agility and SURF'S UP BRO!
Agatha: I actually tried to set up ONE Agility against Gengar and tried to Surf my way through after that, while of course using Blizzard on Golbat. I did misclick and use Blizzard on Haunter, which somehow did MORE than Surf. Maybe I crit him and didn't read the text due to how astounded I was. Either way, I finished setting up on Arbok and Surfed it and the second Gengar outta there.
Lance: Used Blizzard to kill his Gyarados. Then with how much his Hyper Beam did to me, I had to win on offense alone. Blizzard killed both Dragonairs, Aerodactyl dropped to Surf, and Dragonite fell to Blizzard. I coulda missed any old time. GOD.

Champion Gary: I did set up on the Pidgeot. It Mirror Moved my Agilities, and I hit it with Blizzard, nearly killing it, when it hit me with my own Blizzard. I lived, hit it again, and used Double-Edge on Alakazam. Rhydon died to Surf, and used Blizzard to kill off his Gyarados. This thing never dies in one hit, except to Thunderbolt, I swear. Arcanine died to Surf, and my health was fairly low dealing with both Alakazam and Gyarados, when Venusaur came out. I shot Blizzard, and it died in one hit. To a crit. FUCK YEAH!!
I was at Level 64 and won at 5:20!

2023.05.31 02:03 TheMagicalSock [WTS] Benchmade 3300 Infidel

Hello all,
I’d really like to sell a knife on knife_swap , but I keep pricing myself out of the market so that I don’t have to sell a knife on knife_swap . Help me break this vicious cycle of bargaining and denial with this Benchmade Infidel.
This is pretty much a safe queen. I’ve carried it around the house and deployed it a couple hundred times. Factory edge, has never cut anything. The factory grind is well centered.
The action is perfect, and if I hadn’t decided OTF’s aren’t really for me, this wouldn’t be for sale. Blade play is minimal and comparable to other OTFs in this price range.
I am the first and only owner. Purchased from a local Benchmade Premium Plus dealer, not a chain store. Guaranteed authentic.
Never been taken apart. Comes with original box, nylon sheath, and papers.
Edited to add: no cosmetic blemishes except for some slight wear underneath the switch.
SV: 300 USD shipped to the lower 48.

2023.05.31 02:00 Logic_Sandwich JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #6: Semifinal 1 - Electra Heart vs 10538-2095

(Shoutouts to u/TheSlyKoopa for the match concept!)
Scenario: Isla de Piedra, Somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea — 11:44AM
DĂ©dalo Viatger, adventurer, archaeologist and explorer extraordinaire, had filled his travelog with countless exploits on his never-ending quest to uncover the secrets of the ancient world. Following the trail of the lost civilization of Pieduro was proving to be his lengthiest entry yet. Armed with powerful Pieduron artifacts known as the Temples, DĂ©dalo and the Pieduron entity ïœąPerdidaïœŁ had forged a path across the Mediterranean, getting ever closer to solving the mystery of their disappearance.
With assistance from Cullinan Dwarf Star, Patron of the House of Muses, DĂ©dalo and Perdida were on the verge of discovering the final piece of the puzzle. Their journey had come full circle, and DĂ©dalo and Perdida’s adventure would end where it began; on the island of Isla de Piedra.
Situated between the coasts of Southern Spain and North Africa, Isla de Piedra had been uninhabited for all of recorded history, though not for lack of trying. The dense forests and greenery that covered every square meter of the island made it a ripe target for logging companies and greedy colonists to strip it for all it was worth. None had succeeded—their abandoned camps had long since been reclaimed by the forest.
The only other sign of human life on the island was the ancient Pieduron outpost where DĂ©dalo’s journey first began, and where it would now hopefully end. The trek to get there was as difficult as the first time—but he didn’t have to do it alone now. At his side were his ever faithful companion Perdida, the inquisitive swordswoman Ninian, the extraordinary android 2095, and the illustrious ice skater Electra (although he didn’t call them that out loud).
DĂ©dalo led the party up a long, winding stone staircase, pointing out the many partially-disabled traps along the way. He and Ninian had long been in contact, and the latter could personally vouch for her +1s—2095 one of the few Bastards she could trust and Electra having earned her trust in for her actions against Enyalius & Enyo Pharmaceuticals in San Battista.
“...and here’s a wall of spikes that shoot out when you pass over that threshold,” he pointed out with a tour guide’s enthusiasm. “I managed to jam up the mechanism with some cloth, but we should probably tread carefully around here.”
Electra rolled her eyes, even though DĂ©dalo couldn’t see the gesture. “Should have just blown it up,” she muttered, annoyed. While her experiences in San Battista had somewhat melted her frosty demeanor, it had still been a long, hot, exhausting trip to get here, and old habits died hard.
“Watch your tone, miss,” Perdida said from behind her ear, making her jump. “My people’s architecture is not something to “blow up”.”
“And it might not have worked,” 2095 chimed in. “If this outpost could survive all those centuries of wear, I doubt a mundane explosion would do much damage to it.”
“The Piedurons built everything to last, from their treasures to their traps.” DĂ©dalo gingerly ducked under the blade of a massive pendulum axe that jutted out from the ceiling. “Fortunate in some ways, unfortunate in others.”
At last, they reached the center chamber. Carved from stone and coated with moss, it appeared just as untouched as the rest of the outpost—save for the podium in the middle of the chamber and the conspicuously empty space on top of it, where the moss grew a little bit thinner.
“Ah, this brings back memories,” DĂ©dalo chuckled. “This is where Perdida and I first met. The El Cor Terra necklace lay in this very spot at the heart of the chamber. When I unfastened it, poof! There she appeared in all of her resplendent glory. We hit it off right away.”
“He tried to cut my head off with a machete.”
“In self-defense!”
“Ok, move it along, lovebirds,” Electra huffed. “Where’s the thing we were looking for? It’s somewhere in here, right?”
Brushing past the “lovebirds” comment, DĂ©dalo retrieved a piece of parchment from his explorer’s pack marked with the symbol of the House of Muses. “According to Cullinan, the hidden door should be right over on that wall.” He pointed over 2095’s shoulder at the northern wall of the chamber. “The question is
how do we open it?”
2095 gave the room a once-over. Aside from the layer of moss and vegetation covering the chamber, it was pretty bare. Its only noticeable feature seemed to be the podium.
“Perhaps the podium could offer some answers.” The party gathered around the stone podium—a stone cylinder, atop which stood a carving which vaguely resembled the neck and collarbone area of a human, with a thin groove running where a necklace would hang. Perdida instantly recognized the Cleria stone inlays around the circumference of the podium.
She traced a finger along the length of the groove, and the Cleria stone beneath it glowed—and, at a volume only audible to 2095’s mechanical hearing, it began to hum.
“Keep going, Perdida,” she whispered. Perdida closed her eyes, feeling herself attune to the place where she lay dormant for thousands of years. The Cleria stone grew brighter and brighter, the hum getting louder and louder.
Suddenly, the room shook. Electra leaped back, expecting another trap. Instead, she watched as the north wall slid open like the doors of an elevator, revealing two hallways; one leading up, the other leading down, both with Cleria stone markings along the walls that pulsed with a gentle light.
“Thank goodness,” DĂ©dalo sighed. “I was worried the real treasure was going to be the friends we made along the way.”
DĂ©dalo and Perdida continued to trek up the hallway, climbing what was likely the control tower of the outpost. Ninian dutifully followed behind them, ready to draw her blade at whatever might strike from the newly unknown section of the outpost. The sound of exhaled breath made her jump...but it was only a sigh from DĂ©dalo. “A shame you came aboard so late, Ninian; our journey’s almost up.”
Ninian’s confusion spiked to alarm as the explorer motioned to lean against the wall. “Watch out-”
DĂ©dalo made contact and nothing happened. He tilted his head to the end of the corridor, a doorway just a few meters away. “We’re far enough in that we’ve most likely avoided the worst of the traps. Besides, I don’t think the Piedurons would have placed many traps so close to a place of importance.” He wistfully rubbed his arm, massaging the strain of adventures and injuries in equal measure. “Feels almost bittersweet. So many months of travel and turmoil, and the end of our journey is in sight.”
“Hey, don’t say that yet. We still need to find a way to get my human body back.” Pedida gently punched him in his shoulder. Still, her pout eventually softened as she looked back towards the final chamber. “I guess you are correct, though. The answer to the Pieduron collapse lies beyond those doors. What comes after
nobody knows”
“Quite right,” DĂ©dalo nodded, and the group moved onwards. “I hope that Electra and 2095 are doing okay down there, in any case.”
“I hope that the rest of the outpost is okay,” Perdida frowned. “They didn’t seem to appreciate how precious this place is—I don’t want to lose another one.”
“I don’t think we have to worry too much about losing them,” A grin of cat-like mischief unfurled on Ninian’s face as hoarse laughter echoed on a draft. There were adventures to come and to be seen, but one to reach its conclusion here and now, and the anticipation made Ninian’s hair stand on end.
The group carefully entered the room, and Perdida flickered out of existence. Before any of them could respond, the control room flickered to life. The stone walls that extended higher and higher suddenly turned “on” as if they were screens, but these were more akin to slabs whose light-emitting runes and rocks flickered and changed in the appearance of Perdida—Perdidas, in fact. All of them, on the many screens, acted in unison as DĂ©dalo rushed forward. “DĂ©dalo, what’s going on?”
“We’re figuring it out,” he shouted as he and Ninian raced to the panels below, trying to decipher the text streaming by. Soon, however, one message displayed on a readout screen:
MYSTICALLY AUTOMATED KNOWLEDGE SYSTEM 0 DETECTED
RESUMING RING FUNCTIONALITY
Meanwhile, having taken the outpost’s lower path, 2095 and Electra entered into a large atrium. Like the rest of the outpost, the walls and floor were composed of the usual, teal stone that seemed impossibly durable. The fact that they could use it to form buildings, carve intricate murals, and keep it all hidden was impressive, but they craned their heads upwards towards the skylight that would let rain and sun in. Through the overgrown foliage, they could see a massive flat ring of Cleria floating above the ground in stubborn defiance of the laws of physics. Gravity-defying gyroscopes of stone spun and swirled in the air above, rotating with the same slow grace as the ancient gears that whirred to life around them. The glow of the Cleria blended together with the light of the noonday sun; the hum of power permeated the entire chamber.
“...shit,” Electra murmured, not sure what else to say.
2095 scanned the rest of the atrium, but ultimately found nothing beyond a discolored, glowing pad on the floor by the opposite wall, outcroppings on the walls that resembled benches, and the remnants of what appeared to be ancient drinking fountains. Rest now before it’s too late, the room seemed to scream.
“I believe we should wait for the others before we go deeper,” 2095 announced. “We could retrace our steps and explore the previous areas, in case we missed another hidden passageway or an undiscovered treasure. It would be a shame to proceed not knowing whether we’ve left every stone unturned-”
“Not a chance,” Electra huffed. “I’m not letting us get killed because of your FOMO. Come on.”
She grabbed 2095 by the wrist and began to drag her over to the pads. 2095 let her—partly because she weighed significantly more than Electra did and she didn’t want her to hurt herself trying to pull her by force, but partly because she was right. She could feel the air buzzing with energy, intensifying by the second. Something big was about to happen.
The two stepped onto the floor pad and immediately felt themselves being shunted into a different space as the teleporter activated. When their vision cleared, they found themselves standing on top of the Cleria ring itself. Electra could smell the ozone in the air and taste the prickling on her tongue. This ring was the key to the whole mechanism—either it was powering the outpost
or the outpost was powering it.
2095 gazed in awe at the machinery surrounding them. It reminded her of the technology from her time; except instead of steel and chrome, it was made of rock and crystal. What secrets died with the Piedurons when they disappeared?
She turned to Electra to express her wonder and nearly screamed when she saw the vantablack vines burst out of her shadowed face, ready to smash the ring to pieces.
“What are you doing?!” 2095 yelled, ïœąYours TrulyïœŁ appearing at her side, tentacles raised.
“I’m destroying this thing, duh,” spat Electra. “I know a superweapon when I see one, and I’m not about to let some dipshit corporation get their hands on it after we leave.”
The chamber shook, bits of rocks and dust falling from the ceiling. “B-but we don’t even know whether this is a superweapon! Aren’t you acting a bit rash?”
“Rash? Seriously? You have no idea what some people in Dead Drop Bay would do for an artifact like this.” Electra remembered what she saw in San Battista—the monster that she had to put down, fuelled by a desire to abuse the remnants of the past for her own gain. “Farewell to Kings, Dead Man’s Hand; hell, even my own company. They’d sink this island to the bottom of the ocean for the chance to have this thing for themselves. This way, I’m solving the problem before it has a chance to start.”
“And risk destroying the legacy of an entire civilization?!” 2095 felt anger boiling in her metallic chest. A part of her resonated with the Piedurons in this moment—she knew what it was like to be a relic of an era far from the present, the last remaining piece of a time nobody would ever know. “What gives you the right to decide what to do with an artifact of this magnitude? To bury what could be the last hope of Pieduro to be remembered as anything but a footnote in history?”
The chamber shook again—this time, both 2095 and Electra felt the ground shift under their feet. Without warning, walls of stone burst out of the ground around them, tearing through centuries-old roots and vines to surround the ring on all sides. Slabs of Cleria stone with deep divots carved into the top of them emerged from the ring itself and floated just above its surface like a magnet levitating atop another.
In the control tower below them, DĂ©dalo and Ninian scrambled from panel to panel, desperately trying to decipher what was going on. DĂ©dalo could see the two other members of the party facing off inside the ring—but before he could call out to them, he heard Perdida’s voice resonate from every screen.
“The Temples
I can see them.”
Ninian watched the panel in front of her light up, displaying a holographic map of the Mediterranean, hundreds of glowing blue dots scattered across the projection.
DĂ©dalo rushed to the nearest screen and grabbed it. “Perdida! Are you alright?!”
“Y-yes, I’m fine.” Perdida blinked hard, putting a hand to the side of her head. “I can feel every Temple in the Mediterranean. I
I think I can gain access to them from here.”
“Access? Like
you can turn them on?” Ninian asked.
“Yes. All of them.” Before Perdida could say any more, the chamber shook once more. In the room below, the ring glowed even more brightly, the two would-be explorers now utterly trapped within it by the sloped walls surrounding it.
“See what I mean?!” Electra clenched her fists, snapping flytrap jaws emerging from the shadow underneath her. “We need to put this entire place in the ground. For good. And like hell am I going to let you stop me!”
Suddenly, all across the surface of the ring, crackling orbs of energy sparked to life, both 2095 and Electra just managing to avoid them. The orbs spun in a circle around the ring, accelerating rapidly until they were nothing but a blur. 2095 recognized the movements of the orbs immediately; it looked like a particle accelerator.
“I hoped we could resolve this peacefully, Electra.” 2095 flicked the silver locks out of her face. “But now I have to convince you in the only language you seem to understand—the language of violence. Don’t hold back.”
The age-old machinery around them hummed to a crescendo. If either of the two combatants wanted to see their convictions through, they would need to survive the full power of Pieduro first.
OPEN THE GAME!
Location: On Isla de Piedra, (Shoutouts to u/TheSlyKoopa for the match art) inside the Floating Ring. The arena shown here has Electra on the north side and 2095 on the south side represented by their character tokens. The players are in the area inside the ring and have no way to exit with sloping walls on all sides.
The ring has a diameter of 60 meters and the internal width is 15 meters; the entire structure is A Durability.
The brown rectangles inside the ring are Pieduron Temples that resemble short, knee-tall minecarts made out of stone slabs.
Goal: RETIRE your opponent!
Additional Information: Over the course of 10 minutes, the ring will spawn 6-inch diameter orbs of light that will accelerate and move in an orbit around the ring at A Speed. Each orb takes 4 seconds to spawn-in, glowing in place and translucent, before it becomes a solid orb.
The orbs move completely along the curvature of the ring, counterclockwise (denoted by the arrows on the map) and can be spawned anywhere inside the ring. When they hit something solid, they will detonate at C Power—powerful enough to destroy vines and ink left by ïœąVenus Fly TrapïœŁ and tentacles from ïœąYours TrulyïœŁâ€”and cause another orb to spawn where the original one started. The orbs have a blast radius of half a meter and other orbs exploding around them will not trigger them to detonate.
Orbs will complete one revolution around the ring anywhere from 3 seconds (inside track) to 6 seconds (along the rim).
Assuming you are standing still, the rough number of orbs that pass by will be 5 orbs per second at the first minute mark, 10 orbs per second at the second minute mark, and so on until the maximum of 50 orbs per second at the ten minute mark.
Starting near each player and around the map are Pieduron temples that resemble minecarts. Each kart can comfortably fit one person, have a handle on either side, and a single rudder-like steering peripheral. The wheels of the kart will always stick to the ring, but they can drive just fine along the walls or even the ceiling of the ring. Karts move at up to B Speed and players intuitively have a 4 in driving them. At max speed, karts can complete one revolution in 4 to 8 seconds (4 seconds on the inside track and 8 seconds on the rim).
All karts have three other special features that can be activated when a driver is steering it, the Turtle, the Spider, and the Crab:
  • The Turtle is a forcefield-like shield that can cover the kart and anybody riding inside it. This forcefield only protects against the fast moving orbs and their explosions and is intangible to everything else. It lasts up to 2 seconds and has a 6 second cooldown before it can be activated again. It can also be set to automatically activate if the minecart is about to hit or be affected by an orb, otherwise it can be manually activated by the driver.
  • The Spider is a net-like shield that functions somewhat similarly to the forcefield the Turtle. The main difference is that instead of blocking orbs, it catches them and converts them into an inert palm-sized orb that is stowed inside the minecart. This shield does also block explosions produced by orbs, but will not produce an inert orb in those cases. The Spider lasts up to 1 second and shares a cooldown with the Turtle. Inert orbs are orbs that can be converted back into fast moving orbs by being thrown with force and intent. They can be made to move exactly in a straight line or along the curvature of the ring when thrown. Inert orbs have no other special properties, other than being A Durability.
  • The Crab is a fast sideways dash up to 8 meters, with a minimum distance of 1 meter. Once the dash is finished, the kart will resume moving in the direction and speed it had before initiating the dash, making it useful for dodging without turning or changing the direction the kart is going in. This feature has a stamina bar where the longer your dash distance is, the more stamina will be used up. It takes 4 seconds for the stamina bar to fill up from empty.
The cooldowns and stamina bars are tied to the person, not the karts themselves.
