A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved, consistently used and necessary Third-Party apps. A lot of required moderation features as well as a number of popular and thriving community features will become permanently inaccessible to users and moderators.
On the 31st of May Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third-party app on Reddit, including Apollo, Reddit is Fun, Narwhl, BaconReader and Boost.
Although we may not all use Reddit on mobile or these third-party apps this is a clear step towards removing user friendly features of reddit, further customization tools like Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface. This doesn't just cause problems on the user level but many subreddits thrive as a direct result of the tools only available on these apps for moderation purposes.
What's the plan?
On June 12th, Many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. We moderate for free with the tools provided to us and a great number of these third party apps have not been supported by reddit for some time, we as a fairly new community have not often been supported in moderation actions by reddit itself but by the greater moderation community educating us either directly or with it's wealth of information to help support other mods. If reddit continues to work against the people who volunteer their time to making their platform engaging, vast and create these spaces like GirlsNextLevel we will consider further protest actions.
The two day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

Even if you only use the official Reddit app and/or "New Reddit" on your desktop, this change still impacts all of us. Our mods rely on third-party apps in order to keep up with moderation duties, and we see this change being pushed by Reddit Inc. as being anti-community and anti-user, particularly those who suffer from visual impairment.
We've all spent a lot of time on this website, both as posters and mods, and what this change will do is make it more difficult to do both, as the official Reddit app (along with "new" Reddit), while being terrible from a design standpoint, is also terrible in that it lacks effective moderation tools. As mods, we volunteer our precious time to work for this website in order to create positive discussion spaces for people — with the far superior apps offered by other Reddit users, made as a labour of love as this space was.
The GNL mod team have experienced a number of glitches and errors with mod tools recently and have first hand experience with the lack of tools the official reddit app offers us to effectively moderate this space. We appreciate that the podcast episode drop date/time coincides with the proposed blackout time and I will detail what I think is the best proposed action for us as a community to take;
I am in Australia, the upcoming podcast episode drops about 2:30pm on the 12th of June my time. This is Sunday evening the 11th of June in the U.S. I will still post the podcast as it drops as I usually do, you will have roughly 4 hours of that thread being up before we go dark with the rest of reddit.

- Complain. Message the mods of reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
- Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at ModCoord- but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.
- Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th. Instead, take to your favourite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
- Don't be a jerk. As upsetting as this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

Every person has their own pain they go through. Some more horrible than others. Some are left with wounds that never heal, minds that are broken, and night terrors left in their life. It is a tragedy that humans have to go through these turmoils.
You, we, us, as humans, go through so much in life just to be snuffed out in a blink of an eye. Go through hordes of problems and yet we all pass at different times for different reasons.
Let's say you go to Side A, listen and trust that they are saying the truth. After years of manipulation and abuse, so much abuse to the point you break down in the middle of your weekend shift in highschool; You realize how demented, twisted, and damaged goods you have become. You are cynical, rude, and judgemental. You blame your problems and mental strain on Side B. You cry your heart out with Side A and think they are your saviors and the right side. Side A tells you and soothes you that you caused most problems that occured in your life. You are blamed for the abuse and mistreated. You feel that Side A is right, that you are responsible for it all. You want to escape but you don't know how.
You meet a lovely partner who wants the best for you. Doesn't care about your scars or mental instability that breaks every so often. They are there for you, thick and thin. You begin to trust them even if Side A screams and begs you not to go. You fall in love, elope, get married and 'escape' the grasps of Side A. Your partner doesn't push your boundaries, doesn't hurt you mentally or blames you for ruining their day. Doesn't force or push you when you are in the bedroom. They are respectful and loving, something that you never had when with Side A.
Fast forward years, you become anguished over the years of torment you went through, how you were treated, how much you were 'brainwashed'. How dumb you feel, how humiliating, thinking of how you stood up for Side A in the courts, how you thought you were doing right by them. Side B comforts you and makes sure you know the whole truth. They make sure you know how horrible Side A is and how much they are a narcissist manipulator. Almost as every gathering you have with them...a little too much.
You feel at...ease finally. Able to trust some side properly and understand the whole picture. You were there with Side A and you heard what Side B went through. It felt good to know each side and which is right and wrong. But wait, why is there still some tension? I read somewhere that you can use an adult linked profile to extra-approve specific channels in addition to the normal YT Kids.
However, it seems to be bullshit. I can't do it through Family Link. I can only choose an age limit for the normal YT Kids.
I downloaded the YT Kids app (why do I have to install a goddamn app to change a setting, just let me do it on the website) and this made me watch a bunch of videos which didn't help and then I can only search within the youtube kids framework, not add additional channels.

My (F20) ex girlfriend, and (M21) myself broke up 5 months ago after a 4 year relationship.
I scrolled this sub, and similar subs endlessly, looking, hoping for answers to the heartbreak.
I was left completely blindsided with no warning, right after an amazing 4 year anniversary. I was shattered, I loved this woman like no other. I destroyed my dignity, calling, begging, showing up at her house, checking her social media endlessly, I was devastated.
I tried everything, got a new job, got more friends, picked up hobbies, nothing seemed to help me.
Recently, I found out she slept with another person, this really hurt me as I couldn’t, and still can’t phantom the idea of being able to sleep with another woman. This was one of my biggest fears for a long time, and I thought I wouldn’t be able to live if it happened. Then I was slapped by the reality of it.
I was losing my mind, I felt as if I couldn’t control myself. I was left with the harsh reality that it is time to accept it for what it is.
I sat with my thoughts and took in all the feelings, not hiding any. When I finally came to the acceptance, I felt freedom, something I hadn’t felt in 5 months.
I realized your true love, your soul mate, will never abandon you, true love will not fail. I understand everyone’s situation is different, and people think differently, but I encourage you all to accept it for what it is, no matter how hard it may be.
Live your life to the fullest as you only get one, maybe one day that person will come back, maybe they won’t. That is life, and you shouldn’t spend your time questioning or worrying.
So friends, here is to all of us moving on to a better life, I wish you all luck. Please feel free to message me if you ever need to talk to someone.
