Hi, /manybaggers!
I’ve been on a quest since February to find an ideal EDC backpack. At first I thought I wanted a totepack convertible option, so I bought the Osprey Daylite Totepack. It’s great, but it didn’t travel well since I couldn’t access the lower part of the bag easily. This led me to start researching full zip/clamshell/top and side access options instead. My issue is that everything is TOO tactical/masculine/rugged for what I’m interested in.
What I’ll be using it for:

I have two “tech pouches” - one Evergoods 6L and one Peak Design. Depending on whether I have my toddler with me when I’m out, I’ll have one or both with me.
Ideally it would hold my 2018 15” MacBook Pro AND my 11” iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard. Usually just my iPad though, so a tight fit with both would be okay
Ideally it would have two external water bottle pockets. Bottle capacity is negotiable, but I have a toddler and I carry very expensive tech.
I have a Bellroy Sling 7L that I use as a smaller option when I leave the backpack in the car on quicker errands. I keep it in the backpack when I carry it.
If it has a side access option, it would be great if it was symmetrical or offered left hand instead (love that Evergoods has this, but the bag is still too rugged/tactical)
either ergonomic or outdoor-oriented in its strap/back padding design. A chest clip would be AMAZING
20L minimum, 30ish maximum. I’m 5’4”, so anything more is too much
stands up on its own (negotiable)
luggage pass through (negotiable)
material that easily wipes clean (negotiable)
well-engineered, thoughtful organization (think Peak, Evergoods, Bellroy)
the biggest issue I consistently run into: I’d really like the bag to be minimalist and more aesthetically femme or androgynous. I don’t need or want molles. I don’t want to Velcro patches on it. I don’t want army green, black, dark blue, charcoal, etc. Lighter neutrals or earthy pastels would be so great. I’d like to be able to take it on a short hike or day outing with my kid or show up to a business casual event and have it work all places.

Brands I’ve considered: - Dagne Dover (no external water bottle) - Various Bellroys (no external water bottle) - Brevite Jumper - cheap material according to a lot of redditors - Peak Design everyday zip - 15L is too small, it’s too firm/structured - Topo and Cotopaxi - totally my vibe for my outdoors bags, but not for daily carry - Beis The Backpack - possibility, but would like a bit more organization - Lo and Sons - all black options - Aer, Evergoods, Mystery Ranch, Wandrd etc: too tactical/masculine - Kanken & Herschel - too simple in organization, feel kinda basic - Tropicfeel Shell- many reviews of poor quality of bag - Away Far - no external water bottle - Tumi - feels too corporate, many no external water bottle
As you can see, I’ve spent a lot of time trying to find a great pack. Am I wanting/asking too much? What of my list seems like it could sacrificed in the name of finding a good one? Am I being too much of a unibagger when clearly I need to be a many bagger regularly? I’m hoping there’s a few smaller, quality brands that I haven’t found yet. Budget is under $1000, preferably much less.

Tonight I write this in bed while laugh-crying at my predicament and waiting for my meds to kick in. I hope I can complete this before the stronger stuff kicks in, so please forgive me ify spelling or grammar degrades as this goes on.
Now let me paint a background for you. I'm a Pharmacy Technician in my late 30s who has a decade of experience. I have spent the last half of that time trapped in my job without a meaningful vacation with my wife mostly due to the big C as a primary reason for the drought. In that time, I have puttered away poring pills and building medication packs for the community. My job is making sure every pill for every patient is dosed correctly and taken at the right time. After all, the difference between medicine and poison is: dosage.
This goes for myself as well, I would put my own compliance package as a medium difficulty due to the wide variety I take. Migraines, Chronic Kidney Disease, and Mental Health are just a few conditions to name so a missed or double dose has the potential to cause quite a problem with compounding interest if it isn't corrected immediately. Having made this mistake to myself in my youth, I have very uncomfortable memories to remind me why compliance packaging done by our dispensary is built and scrutinized so thoroughly.
With the seriousness of my job in one hand, and the seriousness of my conditions in the other hand, surely I would take my own compliance packaging the most serious of all. Right?
...Right?
Well, it would seem that even a Pharmacy Tech has that annoying flaw that all professionals seems to have. A high standard for quality control for everyone... But themselves... Because Today, I was an extra special case of fucked up!
When I built my second pack for the trip, I made a mistake. I didn't put in my propranolol in at all. This is a cornerstone treatment to PREVENT MIGRAINES. Considering it's the only teal colored tablet in my packt, let alone blue or green in shading, a rational person would think that such a striking omission would be noticed.
Again, I am my own special case of dumbass. I do as many others do, just blindly take pills without much thought. So clearly because I'm writing this, I found out the hard way on the first day. Right?
...Right...?
Again, Technician Dumbass over here didn't pay attention. I decided to attribute my migraine from traveling up and down rough roads and roaming in and out of storms in top of eating foods I'm not used to, all classic migraine triggers that can break through my prevention routine. It's a sad fact but very few gets 100% prevention efficacy so this theroy is very plausible. So by day two or three I would be suspicious of an unresolved migraine or SEE THE MISSING PILL. RIght?
RIGHT???
NOPE! Pharm McDumbass me missed it, AGAIN. How could this happen? My heart should be doing the headless chicken dance from withdrawal by now. Well, yes it absolutely did! In what possible reality could I not notice such a profound symptom?
Because to fight the migrane, I take ever increasing amounts of caffeine! So my McBrain determined that to be why it was weird. Again, perfectly reasonable assumption! Surely however with both my head and heart getting progressively worse to the point where I am having anxiety, heart palpitations, a resting heart rate of 90-110, a throbbing arterial pulse from neck to temple, and now hallucinations I would by now at least seek professional medical help. RIGHT??

Samuel L Jackson, eat your heart out because the F-Bomb parade I issued in that moment of pain-indiced hysteria was absolutely legendary. It was there, in that moment, did I realize that 5 days of my vacation was crippled by my failure to be a professional to myself, and pay attention.
TLDR: I managed to count to potato with my pills for almost a week and make a third of my vacation a pain-indiced hallucination to forget.

BPK-85 (Groza at home) Got this kit for a M85 just to see how it was, so here's my first impression review.
Instalation was relatively easy and no fitting was required. Instructions are terrible so be ready to figure it out on your own.
Trigger, it's a bar that links to the existing trigger, it's not a good trigger feel but it's not absolutely terrible. Compared to the desert tech MDRX it's no where as nice with the trigger feel.
Picatinny- front rail is easily flexible and will not hold proper zero however the rear rail is very sturdy mounted on the gas tube and it seems like it will hold accuracy, down side though is they're made of plastic so be gentle.
Plastics are pretty rough, certain parts have the texture of sand paper while other parts are smooth. Also the plastic quality dosent seem to be the strongest and might break easily if you drop the gun.
Pistol grip it came with is kinda wonky, I look into that later but you can use any standard ar grip Magazine release is a little harder to activate but not too bad.
Overall it makes the m85 feel handier and lighter and the forened is very nicely shaped with a nice handstop. Also where you want to naturally place your cheek the rear sight is right there so you have to move foward a little bit
Final words. Is it worth $300? No. With the quality of material definetly not, maybe at $150-$200 it would be, and as a novelty item only.

Specific to FAANG and tech.
Is there truthfulness to “squeaky wheel gets the grease?”
In preliminary ratings I’ve come in at 4/5 on the grading scale. I want to maximize my comp come the real review in a few months.
A pattern I’ve observed is it seems that the people who are most vocal (with negative sentiment) get most attention from leadership.
It occurs to me they might just be more savvy than me and know that being squeaky means the boss will pull for them more in a review, so as not to lose them (even if they’re not great we’re not backfilling, so managers generally don’t want to lose reports).
For context, my company gives managers a pool that they allocate amongst their reports.
If I’m just a more quiet, get shit done team player, am I likely not to be viewed as “flight risk” and therefore not given max raise and refreshers?
Thoughts? Should I be squeakier? I know my boss likes me and my work is good. But it feels like that perversely could work against me (being easygoing, rarely unhappy).
