2023.06.08 09:23 lottery248 it has been for years that more companies are trying to be protected from all necessary competitions. Microsoft, Adobe, Twitch, and more; and then a large amount of ridiculous monetisation models coming out, and worse, censoring things in the name of protecting children which is known to never work.

in short: more and more companies are attempting to force their clients' loyalty to maximise profits. even if they could rationalise it with intellectual property law, it has at least been contradicting with the competition one. Reddit's API change is one of them, and all the theoretical QoL losses and side effects as mentioned are exactly what they want to do, therefore everything is as-is. these corporations that chose to sacrifice the good values and anything that made them great are practically soulless, it's better to force them bring it back or get it destroyed and build a new one with those back.
after reading what you guys have been talking, considering more companies are turning into exclusivity, monetising the basic service component that everyone uses, playing with their power, i have also decided to make a post about this. below, i will share part of my findings from elsewhere to explain the current situation of Reddit. forgive me that i might not be able to have everything at once.
so the context from what i have heard from the flyer, is that Reddit is now changing the API pricing, removing API from mature content, lowering limits for third-party apps we commonly use.
speaking of the new API standard, so much as Twitter now requiring people paying for certain API and then requiring monthly fees.
regarding premium access that is to be introduced, i want to throw out a simple question: why would they want another paycheck when other advertisers and premium users could literally cover those instead of optimising the servers' technology stack to decrease the unneeded cost?
the reason is simple, exclusivity and profits. it has been a while that this narrative that "if you don't pay for the service, you're the product." however, the same reason, they are moving to a trend that not only having it worsened no matter you have paid or not, you are not given any choices and are required to subscribe to a complete service that is supposed to be free, while removing essential communication features like forum or email things. which means the need of money is debunked to certain extent.
now look at some examples from elsewhere. on YouTube, the monetisation threshold is that they want to bring a better content creation platform. but if you search certain terms like free game credits live (which is obviously a scam), you can see several channels with monetisation enabled and you can even send a super chat for it. not only smaller creators having to race for that, it's no way you can survive without those tools. if you know how to use bots, you could spam people with traffics and chats with absolute ease. which has actually increased the use of bots (when they were supposed to decrease it), because it's actually hard to have organic traffic nowadays even for certain talented creators.
now it comes to the apps. if you use Reddit on your phone web, the website pursues you to use their app per 2~3 hours (see the video below). if you are a website developer, nowadays you do have tools being optimised for mobile web, allowing the entire app being run on a website with second-to-zero tradeoffs in terms of performances and features.
when they want you to use apps instead, they want to introduce another monetisation model, they want a more complete tracking through apps, considering you could block trackers with ease using a browser.
take a look at the Windows 11's interface? even for the latest Windows 10, it is full of data tracking, advertisements, and even hardware DRMs on plain sight. not only going worse, they are moving forward to the exclusivity like Reddit does. how bad it is? even Valve has been developing Linux compatibility for a while.
the second one is that they are removing the mature content from their API. it has been for a while that they are locking guests out from accessing. what i find is that is traumatising legal users' safety with their real-life identity verification, more than it is even meant to protect children from those abuse. here is a video explaining:
https://youtube.com/live/U6F2NlZEmgs
in short, it's all about censorship and letting bots ramping up to do it, mature content is just a pretext. it is a matter of time all other services you use will do the same.
remember the day that the "place" sub was a thing? remember how a large chunk of people drew 2B's ass and then got immediately deleted in the form of black pixels? so at the end of the day, if Reddit isn't going to back down, we should find a way to double down, whether everyone leaving from it or getting banned all at once is going to work.
people willingly trade freedom for temporary security deserve neither, and will lose both. - Benjamin Franklin
the last one is about your daily lives that has been relevant to this. notice how they are slowly changing the system against the users, often because they have all the cards that they are betting you are going to stay at the end of day. they are trying to change it into a subscription service so that they are always profitable, and less likely they will need to innovate to compete.
Twitter's Blue verification process, it was meant to have those bots or false identity less likely to spam by demanding payment of so, but i have seen certain bots paying for that and also being able to take advantage of. if you knew how those works, you could significantly decrease the cost of doing so, as well as being prioritised.
look at YouTube after they introduced their Premium. if you don't pay for it, more likely you suffer a long series of advertisements that may not even be relevant to anything you are watching, and sometimes, it's a literal scam. meaning they are doing things specifically to pressure you pay for it, even though paying for channel payments like super chats would charge a 30% fee.
Adobe, a company that pioneered what we call it subscription-based software. it is the leader of the entire content-creation industry, and their Creative Cloud is $55 per month. if you don't have enough money to start with, you're practically ineligible to it. what happens if you end up a loss that you cannot afford that payment at the time? things do happen.
Twitch made one of the most controversial policy ever on the recent few days, and the huge backlash has basically forced them to at least apologise about it. however, it has been notorious that they would charge people 50% of what audiences have paid, and then often sudden ban or double standard.
i don't think boycotting will work, considering it is a coordinated threat towards the people, don't assume that any words will make then listen. every time the backlash ended, they will silently impose all those things. so as soon as any alternatives become suitable, copy all the posts to that place as an archive and go on there.

2023.06.08 09:22 Pierceman [For Hire] Front end developer, looking to join a group project to help out

Not a "for hire" post per se, but reddit requires me to put the tag on the post.

I've been teaching myself front-end for a bit over a year. So far I've worked on a few solo projects, however I don't have any experience on team projects.
I would like to gain experience working with a team, get the feel of how it's actually like working in the field. I'm planning to freelance however I have no experience on how a team tackles a project.
Do any of you guys plan on, or are already working on a project and you need a helping hand? Here are some of my projects I've worked solo on:
Battleship web browser game (styled for both mobile and desktop screens)
Made with vanilla Javascript and CSS, used Jest for running tests. Also used Aseprite to manually create all the pixel-art assets of the game. This project was a part of the course where the goal was to practice Test Driven Development.
Github: https://github.com/Duesenberg/battleship-game
Live: https://duesenberg.github.io/battleship-game/
Online Shop Mock-Up (styled for both mobile & desktop)
Made with React, styled with CSS. Also used Material UI for some of the components here. Used Jest for running tests. The goal of the project here was to create a web store with a responsive shopping cart. Any items you add should be shown in the cart where price is calculated. You can also remove any items from the cart.
Github: https://github.com/Duesenberg/shopping-cart
Live: https://duesenberg.github.io/shopping-cart/
Memory Card Game (styled for both mobile & desktop)
Made with React, styled with CSS. Used Material UI for most components. The goal for this project was to practice state and hooks in React. I wanted to try out Material UI as well at this point, I was using it for a lot of the components here.
Github: https://github.com/Duesenberg/memory-card-game
Live: https://duesenberg.github.io/memory-card-game/
Photo Tagging Game (styled just for desktop)
Made with React, styled with CSS. Used Firebase for hosting and storing some of the data. For this project a requirement was to use firebase for the back end. Used Firebase for the hosting, storing the game image, storing the coordinates of the map areas of the characters you have to find on the image, as well as the leaderboard. Had a bit of trouble creating a dynamic image map, that is why size responsiveness is quite limited here.
Github: https://github.com/Duesenberg/photo-tagging-app
Live: https://photo-tagging-app-b3302.web.app
CV Application Generator (just for desktop)
Made with React, styled with CSS.The project was meant for React practicing. You can create an application in which you can add various information such as personal info, education, and work experience. Then you can print out a PDF of the application. Local storage is used to store any applications you have created by clicking save. There is an option to load them as well upon page load.
Github: https://github.com/Duesenberg/cv-application
Live: https://duesenberg.github.io/cv-application/
Weather App (just for desktop)
Made with Vanilla JS, styled with CSS.Goal of the project was to practice asynchronous code and API calls. The app lets you search for a location, makes an API call to openweathermap.org to get a number of matching locations. When you click on a location it gets the weather data for that location and displays it.
Github: https://github.com/Duesenberg/weather-app
Live: https://duesenberg.github.io/weather-app/
To-Do List generator (just for desktop)
Made with vanilla JS, styled with CSS.Project was made to practice OOP. You can create separate projects, each with a due date and priority. You can add a list of tasks to the project which you can check off once you finish them. You can save and load projects to local storage.

2023.06.08 09:19 kalashnikovdelorean The Monsters and the Government and the Reckless drivers

I woke up before sunrise (was awake?) and outside I saw 2 monsters, they both looked were cloudlike and starlike, one to the north and the other to the south (front of house faces south) The monster to the North-North-East was like a giant and was very slowly (eating things?) The monster to the South-South-West was even bigger and had 3 heads and many tentacles On the news there was about the monsters I went out to bike, but when I got to an intersection there were many cars going by, and one drove right at me, and then I yelled at them, I biked through the intersection and then I felt bad for being so mean, I pulled out my phone and saw the monsters getting closer, so I biked home My brother was awake, so we woke up the rest of everybody, and me, My brothers, took Dad and Mom to see the monsters, but when I looked, the sky seemed more pixelated, and I thought “This reminds me of the screen around the Earth theory”, and then the sky got brighter and brighter until the sky was white, and the Government went down with a screen and asked everybody in our town to ask the A.I. questions, and I thought if they were going to kill us, and then the Government sent minigunners, Mom and My (other) brother were on their bikes and I hopped on mine and we biked away as fast as we could

2023.06.08 09:07 imbriandead Battery share is so cool

I know this technology isn't new or exclusive to Pixel, but it's so neat to me. I had to use it for the first time a couple weeks back, when my sister's iPhone died at the restaurant my family was visiting. She knew about the battery share feature some Androids have, so she asked me about it, and we tried it out. It worked flawlessly. It didn't even occur to me before then that this feature not only existed in this phone, but can charge many different devices. It charged her phone kinda quickly, too.
Just a bit of an appreciation post.

2023.06.08 08:52 Zeryellx Is 5Mbps too slow for things like Google Maps or Social Media?

I'm traveling to Europe and considering purchasing an ESIM that provides 30GB of data capped at a speed of 5Mbps for 30 days. After using the 30GB it drops to 1Mbps unlimited, however 30 GB should be more than plenty so I'm not worried about it dropping speed later.

My concern is that 5Mbps sounds very slow to me, but I won't be using it to stream videos or games. I primarily want to use it for looking up directions on Google Maps, navigation, checking public transit times, reading reviews on Google Maps, etc. I also plan to use it for social media like sending snapchats or posting to my story on instagram. I don't think I'll be needing it to download any large files--which I would just do when connected to WiFi if necessary.

Would there be any issues with going with this option or should I look into alternatives? Thanks in advance!

2023.06.08 08:07 Jukkster Home network Remote Play only functions when TV is on

Remote Play works flawlessly when I have the TV on, connect, and play on my Pixel 6 Pro.
However, if I power on the console from standby remotely with my TV off, the app connects (little spaceship zooms off to the right), but the screen remains black.
Anyone have a solve for this? I've searched and can't find anything. Going to try on an iOS device as well to see if the issues remain.
Power save options are off. HDMI-CEC is disabled.
EDIT: Xbox and phone are connected via 5GHz wireless.
Trying on an iPad resulted in the same behavior

2023.06.08 07:57 sigmaxyrille Needing help finding a game with the same design as Blasphemous (or quite)

I don't know if it's the right place to ask but I don't know where else I can ask anyway so...
Probably a year ago I saw a video that showed nice looking games and one caught my attention at the moment but for some reason I thought about it again. The video was probably a TikTok (or maybe an article? Well doesn't matter much) because it showed several games and few images or a short video per game so that's why I barely remember anything.
I remember that the game was in pixel art, it had a dark medieval fantasy, maybe gothic style/vibe? You know, there was this "religious" vibe. I think there was a knight and it was probably a little bloody. It catched my attention because it was a very beautiful game, and when I saw the Blasphemous character when I did researches I thought a sec that I found the game but I really don't think it was it.
Since Blasphemous is the closest thing I could find to what I remember from this game, I thought you guys could know some similar games and so maybe the one I'm looking for ? Thank you if you help!
(Sorry if I did mistakes, I'm not native english)

Platform(s): PC - Specifically, a Browser game running on Flash
Genre: I do not remember if it was a Point-n-Click or an adventure game. It was not a side scroller, as it had a depth dimension and involved frequent backtracking.
Estimated year of release: I definitely remember playing this around the late 2000s. But I may be misremembering and it having been from the early 2010s - but it almost certainly was no later than 2012.
Graphics/art style: It was comprised of cartoony, likely hand-drawn pictures and sprites (not pixel-art). It looked like your typical 2D flash game's artstyle, a-la Riddle School. It mostly used bright colours, except for the part when a huge storm threatened to destroy the island.
Notable characters: If I recall correctly, all the characters were anthro animals. I don't remember if they wore clothes, nor anything about most of the characters, but I do remember that it involved two anthropomorphic rabbits - one blue, and one red - and those didn't wear clothes. You only played as one of them (I don't remember which), the other was a background character and hung with the other anthros while you went on doing your thing.
Notable gameplay mechanics: The main gameplay involved the furries being on vacation to some sort of tropical island, including a little resort village if I recall correctly, but it turned out the island was cursed or something, and there were some major environmental instabillities being caused by whatever had cursed it - it led to a massive storm occurring during the story, preventing the characters from sailing out of the island. The main objective was to find the source of the curse and save the island as well as allow everyone to leave safely. At least that's what I recall, I may be misremembering.
Other details: I could've sworn this game was called Chaos Island or Chaos Adventure, or anything involving the word "Chaos", since I vividly remember that at the time I was looking for another flash game called Chaos that I played circa 2005 but could never find again, and every time I tried to look for it, I only found this bunny game instead since it also started with Chaos. But for some reason, trying to look it up never yields any results, so maybe I am completely misremembering it being called that way.
The only other detail about the game's story I remember is that there is an underground tunnel connecting one island to another, and during the story, the heavy storm actually floods this tunnel, preventing you from using it and effectively leaving you trapped and unable to return to the resort until you get the storm to stop.

2023.06.08 07:17 IDE_IS_LIFE Is Quest 1 Airlink / Oculus Link exactly the same in terms of bandwidth as Quest 2?

Basically, I'm looking at selling my Quest 2 to put towards funds for a Quest 3, and looking at putting a portion of that into a Quest 1. I pretty much only use PCVR as standalone isn't really where it's at for me. The only big factor that I have to consider though is bandwidth.
So, my question is, does the Quest 1 (with its Snapdragon 835 soc) support the same Oculus link with 500Mbps bitrate and airlink with 200Mbps bitrate that the Quest 2 with its XR2 chipset supports?
Bonus question, due to the lower refresh rate and native resolution, would compression artifacting be lowered due to the lower number of encoded pixels and frames per second being squeezed into whatever bandwidth is available for a given link to your PC?

2023.06.08 07:09 oceandrivelight Difficulties with S21+

Hey everyone, wanted to share my thoughts on my experiences so far with the S21+. I bought mine early last year, upgrading from a Pixel 3 I'd had for many years that was ready to leave this mortal coil.
I spent quite a lot of time looking at the options available, reviews across a range of sources, talking with people who had different phones. At the time, Google seemed not to have the best on offer for value, and I did not want to enter the Apple ecosystem at all. Samsung seemed the best option, and I liked the idea of flexibility in an android system to customise my system. (I also had an Oppo prior to my Pixel, good phone, but at the time, Samsung came out on top value for money).
There's a lot of things about the S21+ I like. The battery life is significantly better than my Pixel was, granted it's a newer model of phone so not really a fair comparison. Screen size is good, very bright (rarely ever need it on full), it's sturdy, has stayed pretty fast and responsive.
The difficulties I've been having were minor at first but now have come grating. Bloatware and lack of control over installed software and apps is a big one. Things like Bixby, AR related apps, Galaxy/Samsung bloatware, and apps like Photos, Messages etc that end up being double ups when using Google's ecosystem. Granted, you can disable a lot of these. But there's still many you can't (Bixby vision, Gallery, Messages).
My main frustration isn't just the inability to uninstall/disability them. It's that they are subdivided into so many different apps, which makes it such a time consuming task to go through each app and it's micro app/software that are iterations, check if it can be uninstalled/disabled, if not, change the permissions, force stop, change the battery allowances, notifications, and system permissions. Then there will be some you have no control over at all, and will always have a form of permission (usually notifications) and can't be disabled.
If it was just bloatware that didn't do much, I wouldn't care as much (though some of the permissions that were already granted were a bit alarming). But it's the constant push/pull between Google and Samsung apps that is the nightmare. Not being able to disable or uninstall things cleanly or entirely, means that if I haven't nabbed every bit of the Samsung Android microsystem, it can distrupt it at any point. Trying to edit a photo, and it defaults to a native Samsung app, or following a link/opening something, then I'm suddenly back in Samsung accounts and it's trying to prompt me to re-engage with the pipeline of native apps I thought I managed to freeze.
It feels like playing whackamole, but some of the moles are made out of steel and my mallet is inflatable. For a device I paid over $1400 AUD for, to avoid a mobile lock in contract, it just doesn't feel like it's even my phone.
Other things I've felt were lacking: camera (felt like there was a drop in quality within the last 8 months, the focus ability is absolutely temperamental, fiddled with all the settings and modes to try and improve the photo quality and 1/20 photos will be a really good quality pic), fingerprint scanner is... Wishy-washy? I'll figure it must be some dust or oil on my phone or finger, wipe both down, but no dice. Othertimes I can have just been swimming and it'll get a whiff of my fingerprint and read it faster than a university student on Adderall cram studying for their mid year exams.
I want to say I would not be surprised if a lot of this is user error. But I am not sure how to fix it. Done a lot of looking online/here etc. and it's still this tug of war with my phone to just let me use it the way I want to. With how my user experience was going recently, I thought I'd had it around 3 years, then remembered it's only been a year and a half. Just depressing, man.
I always knew of Android phones to be best for what Apple didn't have, and in a way they are. But from what I've been seeing, it's as if all the major companies of Android are just on course to become one big bucket of "same", because it is the most profitable model.

2023.06.08 07:07 Kolma528 Can anyone confirm if minimed mobile us works on 14 beta 3?

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.medtronic.diabetes.minimedmobile.us just curious if it throws up an error that stops it from running. As of beta 2.1 it only gave me untested error which was fine as it could still be used. But they've been known to block new Android versions for months.
Only worried now cause beta says 14 instead of "upsidedowncake" in Android version.
Using pixel 6 pro.
Please and thank you!
