Residence: Los Angeles, CA
Hooks: First Gen Immigrant, Low Income, Very bad school
Income: Less than 30k
Intended Major(s): Chemistry or Biochemistry
ACT/SAT/SAT II: I won't submit, no matter what lols
UC GPA = 4.15W/3.76UW Community College GPA = 4.0 Rank = top 9.9% 38/383 (currently)
Coursework: AP Chemistry, Ap U.S. History, AP Lang, in my senior year I am taking AP Gov, AP Lit, and AP Calc AB. I took Dual Enrollment. LATTC (CC) = Intro to Psychology (A) Intro to Sociology (A) American Sign Language (A), Stanford University (Actual University) = CompSci 105 (A+), and also took Communication 101 (A) at USC but through LATTC, and will take 2 other college courses at USC during the summer which are astronomy and sociology 2. I will also take one more college class in my senior year at USC.
Awards: Top 10% Stanford Class Scorer Across the country: Since I had an A+, I scored top 10% out of 4,000 students across the country who took the Compsci class. Students from the National Education Equity Lab program. National Honor Society for National Equity Lab: Since I scored that high, they put me in their National Honor Society. High Honor Roll all High School: this is common but I’ll put it anyway. CompSci 105 Certificate: Since I took the class they gave me a certificate. UCLA Three-day Writing Bootcamp Certificate: I attended a boot camp with the UCLA EAOP program, and I stayed in the dorms for 3 days and took writing classes with other students across LA. Peer Mentor Summits Certificates x3: Certificate showing that I went to the summits to learn about ways to talk to students and colleagues. Pal/CLEF scholarship x2: 400 dollars in total. USC Summer Program Certificate: I will be getting a certificate by the end of the summer program.
Extracurriculars: Mental Health Resource Website(11th): Currently working on a website to add mental health and school resources for students at my school. I am using html, css, and javascript to build it. Took my own initiative to reach out to professionals and students to help me with the project.
English Tutoring(9th-11th): I tutored 1 college students from El Salvador in their college English classes for over 2 years, 3 hours a week during the weekends and sometimes Fridays. Went over their lessons, and tried to prepare lesson plans for them.
Peer Mentor Club(leadership position, maybe president?)(9th-11th)
Work Experience(10th-11th): I worked at a shapewear store, I was in charge of the inventory, and sales, and I was a cashier at the same time. I helped with the inventory system as well. Invited to events by the CEO.
Pop-Rock Club(11th): So far I am learning how to play the guitar and we have done multiple fundraisers to get the instruments and equipment that we need.
Chess Club (10th-11th)(President)
Leadership(10th-11th): I only went to leadership for 1 year since they turned the club into a class, and my school goes by mesters so I only take 4 classes and I have 3 APs so it doesn’t fit my schedule. But when I was in leadership, I would organize events like pep rallies, I would help with fundraisers during Valentine's day or Christmas, holidays basically. I might help them when they do events but I don’t attend meetings.
Chemistry Club (President/Founder): I founded the chemistry club.
Programs(9th-11th): I am in multiple programs, including UCLA EAOP which is a program by UCLA, we go to UCLA all the time which is cool. I am in the USC UpwardBound, I take college classes with them on Saturdays, and in the summer I will be staying at their dorms for 6 weeks taking 2 college classes. We also have community service opportunities in the program. I am also in the Gear Up program, we go on hella field trips and I learn a lot from it. I am in the National Ed Equity Lab which allows low-income students to take college classes at schools like Stanford, Harvard, etc.
Community Service Hours: 300+ with Gear Up and other programs. Will also do community service through the city I am in and will volunteer at a good bank this summer.
Essays/LORs/Other: UC PIQS : Prompt #2: Showing my creative side, I will talk about how I use twigs and leaves to create creatures and characters in order to use storytelling and create a story in nature since my mom taught me that when we used to go to the mountains in my home country, El Salvador, and how that shows my creative side because I am able to express my emotions and thoughts through storytelling.
Prompt #4: Which is how I took advantage of an educational opportunity, I will talk about USC Upward Bound and how it allowed me to find the person I want to be in the future through their resources and tremendous love and care for me (I will go in detail about the opportunities the program provides) and I will mention how I am the first undocumented student to join the program since 1977 which is a huge accomplishment and I want to be able to represent my community and myself.
Prompt #5: My significant challenge and how I overcame it, I will talk about my moms health, and how I had to become an adult at a young age to be able to process the emotions in my household and how I got a job in order to buy school supplies like a laptop and an iPad, to not worry my mom.
And lastly, Prompt #7: Which is how I made my community a better place, I will talk about the mental health resource website and how my exigence was hating to see my friends sad and missing out on big opportunities like I did when I was down, so I created a website to give mental health resources to students at my school.
Schools I want to apply to: I want to apply to UC mostly. I really really want to go to UC Irvine. That is my top choice for sure, please be brutally honest with UC Irvine with my stats.
Little Background: I am really worried about my GPA because my history teacher was a terrible human being so she never gave me an A. And since my school is in the quarter system, AP classes are a year long, however the 2nd and 3rd quarter are called honor classes while we are still in the AP class. Therefore, the AP is 4 grades in total and the teacher gave me 3 Bs and 1 C which brought my GPA down SINCE THEY ARE ALL WEIGHTED. I have all As in my sophomore and junior year except my sophomore year I had 2 Cs. So really, only the APUSH class is the one ruining my life basically.

2023.06.10 06:24 chinaPRteam Misleading/interesting Niche Ranking Methodology???
Hi all,
I know college rankings in general are often misleading and not always even helpful in determining what college to pick, but I was recently looking at the methodology Niche uses to calculate the "Academics" score. Im choose to highlight this specific ranking as the academics score is worth 40% of their total ranking, and many prospective students would base their collegiate choices off of primarily the quality of the academics.
The biggest issues (in my opinion, this is just my opinion) with the methodology are the factors chosen and how they are rated
The most weighted factor for calculating the academics score is... acceptance rate, at 16.9%
It is true that more competitive schools tend to have better academics, however, as many of us know, acceptance rate can be artificially decreased through
interesting admissions policies (
cough Northeastern
cough cough Minerva
cough), and a just because a school has a higher acceptance rate doesn't mean its academics are worse (some argue that many STEM focused schools actually have higher acceptance rates despite being competitive as many students interested in such schools tend to be more qualified and not just applying for clout). Furthermore, basing rankings off admissions scores could potentially create a positive feedback loop: relatively low acceptance rate leads to relatively high ranking, more students apply, acceptance rate goes down, ranking goes up, more students apply, until it eventually evens out.
Additionally at 8.4% wighting we have yield rate, which is not necessarily a indicator of good academics.
SAT scores and National Merit Scholar students account for 12.8% of the academics grade, and while, yes, smarter students tend to go to schools with better academics, I would still argue that standardized test scores are not going to determine how good a schools professors and coursework are going to be.
At, also 8.4% we have diversity, and while I wholeheartedly believe that diversity is very important, does diversity impact the quality of academics and professors? Probably, but it just seems odd that they threw it in, id love to hear y'alls thoughts on the matter, I definitely don't have the full picture on this one.
This is all my opinion and I just wanted to share it. I do at least appreciate that Niche wights its Value ranking fairly high at 27.5% of the total ranking, which considers factors such as return on investment, net price, median earnings and loan stats, although lots of students that go to your typical highly ranking private schools like the ivys tend to have more wealthy parents which also comes with better networking opportunities not even considering college. Personally, Id like a college ranking site that only puts up raw data which you could then download as an xls file, sorta like the world bank (
https://data.worldbank.org).
I would love to hear what y'all think!
Here's niches official college academics ranking methodology:

2023.06.10 04:30 Specific-Mobile-1817 Nursing or OBGYN
So I have average to low grades and test scores and applying to colleges after summer. My heart lands with OBGYN but my low stats scare me with not getting into a good college. A option I have is two years of cc BUT I have seen this will decrease me getting into medical school later on. Another option is a nurse practitioner focused on OBGYN. I could just use some guidance right now. Do I all in one lose sight of gynecology or do I still have hope?

2023.06.10 02:46 Which_Sherbet_6358 Reverse chance me, will take anything
I think I exhausted all of my options, this is my last effort before I (more or less) call it quits and finalize my list. Will welcome any suggestions as long as they fit what I'm looking for!! Doesn't matter if it would be a reach, target, etc. which is why I didn't include my stats
Schools on my list so far: Northwestern, University of Rochester, University of Maryland college park, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, Illinois Wesleyan, Syracuse, Ithaca
What I'm looking for:
- LGBT friendly, specifically transgender friendly (gender neutral restrooms and housing options, student groups, etc.). Would be great if there are HRT resources on campus/near campus but not required!!
- In an LGBT friendly state or at the very least doesn't discriminate against LGBT educators and/or doesn't ban legal adults from accessing HRT
- Located in an LGBT friendly city/area
- Offers bachelors degree in Music Education, preferably has the option to have a specific emphasis (such as choral or instrumental)
- At least 5% Asian population (would be great if it's around 10%)
- Has an Asian student group
- Asian American friendly city/area/state
- Preferably not in a state that's too much to the west or too much to the north. The farthest west I can go is probably Colorado and the furthest North would be New York but that's a stretch, Pennsylvania's more of the true limit
I'm grateful for any and all suggestions!

Welcoming Summer 23' & Minecraft 1.20
Season 3 started on December 3rd, 2022. Heading into the season we felt like the motto this season should be "The season of good neighbors." So with that in mind we paved way for a season of essentially limitless restrictions. We wanted to welcome the player into a world that felt tight knit, interactive, and laiden with story & life. All of which would come naturally as players interacted, goofed around, and pushed story not on one another but with one another. Season 3 thus far, has been slow paced. There is this minecraft stereotype, that the game is only fun for 2 weeks everywhere. & thus being somewhat true on a surface level, those of you who do wish to join find that some of us dig a little deeper. (no pun intended) On hexacomb there is an oppurtunity to participate in a slow paced, ever-evolving smp, with minimal restrictions, maximum collaboration, and a really chill community behind it.
If you choose to join Hexacomb for 1.20 you will be joining a 6 month old season, but as stated this season has been quite slow paced as we are an adult community & when work and college picks up the server slows down simultaneously. There is still a ton of room to contribute to this season though, and the goal is to make this season last longer, hopefully at a minimum 12 more months. So with large scale server projects like spawn, the nether hub, and the gaming district all unfinished you can feel good about contributing to the old and building anew. We have a strong active player base of about 15, and when that minecraft itch hits for the community you'll see 20 or more players around at a time, throughout the day. So as long you're looking for a place to hangout and chill, meet new people, and contribute to a true sandbox environment look no further. Oh yes, and our staff team is awesome, transparent, and seemlessly integrates so well with the community that you can barely tell whos in charge around this place. It is Nexo though, if you're wondering. He is the owner.

2023.06.10 00:43 LargeIndustry MBA Profile Review (337 GRE, 3.99 BS, 4.00 MS, Active Duty)
Demographics
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: White
Education and Stats
Undergrad GPA: 3.99 Chemical Engineering
Master's GPA: 4.00 Chemical Engineering (completed as part of an accelerated five-year BS/MS program)
School: State flagship of middling reputation
GRE: 337 (167 Quantitative/170 Verbal/4.5 Analytical Writing)
Work Experience
Just under 3 years at time of application excluding lab work during my previous degrees.
I supervise a team of six instructors who plus myself annually facilitate the training of over 1000 of the Navy's brightest enlisted sailors in chemistry, materials science, and radiation principles necessary to operate naval nuclear reactors.
I'm fortunate to have a large amount of free time compared to the norm in the military, and I think an online program would be a great way to aid the transition to the civilian world I plan to make in about three years. I rather not lose two years of income in a full-time program or retake the GRE if I can help it as my current scores expire in a little over a year. I have read career outcomes tend to be weaker from online programs, though I don't know how strong this effect is at universities with T25 full-time programs. If anyone has any insight on this I would love to learn more.
I believe my stats are pretty strong except possibly my years of work experience, however I suspect this is mitigated by the uniqueness of my role and the leadership experience the military gives junior officers.
Extracurricular / Hobbies
I volunteer twice a month packing food at a local food bank and study programming using online resources like Coursera. I've created a pretty large set of programs but nothing super polished.
I've also been reading the Economist regularly, though not cover to cover, since before I started college lol.
Post MBA Goals
I'd like to work in either the consulting or energy industry after transitioning out of the Navy.
Target: Ross, UNC
Reach: UC Berkeley Flex Program?
I'd be using the GI Bill so I'm giving a big preference for public programs as 100% of tuition and fees is covered where this is not quite the case at many private programs (USC, CMU)
Thank you in advance for any and all perspectives!

I am seeking monogamy and commitment from one lady and I am willing to show the same. Currently located in Northern Virginia, but I travel often!
I think that the only reasons we might not be compatible are preferences for looks, our careers (especially me in the Navy), sexual compatibility, and how we spend our free time. As for other reasons- I pride myself in communication, problem solving, patience, chivalry, authenticity, and being altruistic.

Someone will really like this and I hope if you are interested, we could write our success story here. I am an eternal optimist and I realize that you can’t small talk on apps the way I would really like to get to the heart of serious issues. If you are genuinely ambitious yet humble from our beginnings- maybe one of us is the First Spouse to the other, or, the half of a great partnership and earn the title of best parent, or co-chefs in our house together. Coach of the kids’s sports team is cool, too.
I have almost all the pieces I have to make life great and for me it is- just hoping to find that force multiplier where we can enhance our lives and take each other to a place of leadership and bliss that not even we can imagine right now!

2023.06.09 23:55 StrawHatSankara Advice?
Hey everyone,
This is my first reddit post, thought I could use some help with this data analyst job hunt. I graduated with a bachelors in biology, was gonna do healthcare but after some time in the industry I have decided to switch to data analytics. I did the Google DA cert and the new Google Advanced DA cert, as well as the SQL course in DA from UC Davis. I know Java, R, Python, SQL, and Tableau and have done some projects to show that off. I have also taken college courses in Calc I-III, Stats, and Linear Algebra (I want to eventually get a masters in data science). I have been applying non stop for a couple of months now and not a single call back from any employer. Have tried reaching out to hiring managers and writing good CVs but have not heard anything other than rejections which has been sort of demoralizing. Anything I can do to help boost my odds and land an interview?

2023.06.09 23:03 codyxxo Failed 3 classes, many red flags, but still got the A
I’m not good at posting on social media, but I remember reading a story like this 5 years ago that gave me hope to keep pursuing my dream and I want to pay it forward.
Applicant profile
- ORM male, non SES
- 1st time applicant
- 1st generation healthcare worker with no connections to other doctors, hospitals, or med schools
- 3.4 uGPA - 3 Fs, 3 Cs in the first 2.5 years. 5 of these were prereqs (they had us in the first half not gonna lie). I retook all the Fs and one of the Cs and got 3 As and 1 B.
- Bio major. If you care, my undergrad was a somewhat prestigious school, and very STEM heavy. 5 years undergrad + 3 years SMP + 1 gap year. The SMP did not offer any linkage.
- 3.6 SMP gpa.
- 507 MCAT with 124 CARS (1st attempt, but could've done better).
- 480 clinical hours as a pct on a med surg floor - 980 by the time of my interview
- 200 hours as a secretary at the hospital (non clinical)
- 1400 research hours across 4 biochemistry/genetics labs and 3 middle author publications. ~2400 hours by the time of my interview and a poster presentation at an international conference right after the interview, which I included in an update letter
- 12 shadowing hours with a DO - 30hrs by the time of interview with 3 other MDs / DOs
- ~60 hrs tutoring + TA at my undergrad
- No listed volunteering hours (red flag).
- No listed clubs or leadership positions (red flag)
- Rec letters (in a committee letter from my SMP) from: a DO I work with, my grad school pre med advisor / PI, professoformer PI, psych professor. I didn't read them but they were probably all pretty good.
- No X factor that I'm aware of
- My interview was mid. Got asked pretty generic questions and I gave pretty standard answers. I'm just a boring dude.

13 DO secondaries submitted. 1 II -> WL -> A ……at an OOS school with the highest average gpa of all the DO schools I applied to (>3.7, one of the “Big 5” DO schools)
Surprisingly, I wasn’t immediately screened out by any of the schools pre-secondary. Secondaries were submitted from mid-July through October. I tried to submit the MD ones sooner than the DOs. The secondary for my only A was sent around late July or early August IIRC. I received an II at the end of February and got off the waitlist in May.
So here’s my story
My first F was in gen Chem 1 because it was my first semester in college and I was immature and lacked self-discipline. I also got a C in intro to bio that semester. I later retook these classes and got As in both, and I got almost all As in the next 2 semesters. My spring sophomore and fall junior semesters were when things fell apart. I won’t get into the details but a mix of physical+mental health issues and unfortunate events in my social life made me lose focus, resulting in Fs in bio III and a university required rhetoric class, as well as Cs in orgo I & II. Then I was put on academic probation and “separated” from my university for 2 semesters.
At this point I was pretty devastated and started to consider switching career paths because I didn’t even know if it was still possible to get into any medical school with my grades. I ended my 3rd year with a 2.96 cumulative gpa - a number forever ingrained into my head. Even if I got all As the rest of the way and stayed a 5th year, my gpa would only be a 3.4, which would still make it very hard to get in. But I realized in my time off that nothing will be nearly as fulfilling to me as practicing medicine. I also knew that my grades in the past year were not indicative of my true abilities, I was just in a difficult situation. So I addressed all the issues that held me back in the past, and even started counseling as I prepared to start my premed track again.
Also, this was around the time when I started to focus on becoming a better person as a whole. Not that I ever had a history of doing anything seriously immoral, but having the time to finally be alone with no distractions granted me opportunity to be more introspective and think about the ideal person I wanted to be, rather than the person others wanted me to be. I remember browsing through a Reddit post some years ago asking suicidal people what quotes keep them going, and one reply that hit me hard was “one day someone’s going to need you, and you better be there for them”. Over time, I realized that the most important quality of my "ideal self", among others, is that I should always be available when people need me, and to put the needs of others above my own. I think this perspective I developed back then helped keep me motivated and focused on my path to become a physician, and still does to this day.
One of my biggest improvements after coming back was my work ethic. I came to terms with the fact that I simply am not as intellectually gifted as most of my peers. If they studied 6 hours for an exam, I would need to study 25 hours for a similar grade, and if that’s what it takes then so be it. If I were to be a doctor, my patients aren’t going to feel bad for me because I’m slow; what really matters are the results. With redemption on my mind I loaded my schedule for the next 2 years with rigorous medicine related classes such as immunology, dev bio, genetics, biochem, anatomy, etc. (I also retook the classes I failed and did well). I went to every lecture, every supplemental session, and spent almost every day of the school year studying at the library from ~5pm - 2am, and 11am - 2am on weekends. There were times when I didn’t take a day off for several weeks. One year during finals, I wouldn’t sleep more than 2hrs a night for the entire week because I studied so much. I also changed my studying methods to rely less on brute force memorization, and more on attaining a deep understanding of concepts. Luckily it all paid off.
Disclaimer: I would NOT recommend this work schedule for anyone. I just hated myself at the time, threw away my social life, and am strangely good at working while sleep deprived and hungry. Please take care of yourself.
Noteworthy parts of my application
When applying to medical schools I used my past failures as a testament of my persistence and resilience. It’s not like I could’ve hid my hideous grades anyway so might as well try to turn it into a strength. It ended up becoming a talking point in all my 1:1 interviews too. Some were impressed with my growth, although 1 still seemed a little concerned.
Another strength of my application was conveying how much I love working in healthcare through my experience as a PCT. The job is already hard enough having to take care of patients with dementia, C. Diff, incontinence, terminal cancer, COVID, diabetic ulcers, GI bleeds, hip/knee fractures, violent psych disorders, patients that are rude and non-compliant, etc. But I worked through the pandemic which was a complete shit show for months on end. The patient: nurse/PCT ratios were so ridiculous that it was honestly unsafe working conditions at times. Lots of people were quitting too which made things even harder. But this heavy workload, stress, and chaotic environment motivated me even more to show up everyday. I always thought to myself “at least I’m here. I can’t image how bad it would for the nurses and patients be if there were no PCTs”, and that if someone had to suffer in this position, I’m really glad it was me and not someone else. Looking back, however, I think my PS sounded too “woe is me” and when preparing for a re-app I was planning on scrapping that one completely for a more optimistic one.
I do regret not talking more about research in my PS and secondaries, however, as that was by far the EC that I spent the most time in, it’s something I’m kind of passionate about, and I probably understand it better than most applicants. Perhaps I would have gotten more interest from research-heavy MD schools if I did.
I never explained the cause of my poor grades that year, I only cited “personal issues” which in retrospect probably hurt my application. With this wording, it’s easy to assume the worst, like having a drug addiction or debilitating mental health issues, which was not the case. I should have said “I had distractions and lost focus”.
Advice for future applicants
If you dug yourself a hole as deep as I did, your first and foremost priority is to take care of your mental and physical health, which is more important than your gpa. Taking time off from school to fix yourself and recalibrate is a much better option than maintaining your downward trajectory and risking even worse health and grades.
Secondly, be very careful about continuing premed. I took a huge risk by sticking to premed, and just because it worked out for me doesn’t mean it’ll work out for everyone else. You should consider going all in on your path only if:
- You know exactly what went wrong and have a realistic plan on how to fix it. Be honest about your capabilities and weaknesses when making a plan. Ask yourself, if you were to retake classes you did poorly in, would you be confident in getting As in most if not all of them?
- You know with 100% certainty that you want to be a physician more than any other career after considering all your options. This may be obvious, but the earlier you jump ship, the less money and time you’ll waste on a journey going no where.
You should at least know if you even want to work in healthcare. I’ve never heard any one of my coworkers say they had a good day at the end of a shift. This work is not fun and the money and clout (however much you think there is) alone are not worth it. My personal justification for choosing healthcare is that working in a hospital has been the only place where I feel like I fit in. I’ve never been good at making friends, always crawled my way through school, and it’s hard to find hobbies and interests. But being on the floor, helping my patients and the team, is comforting for me, in a way. I feel like giving away parts of my life so that others can live theirs is what I was meant to do. I’m at baseline a lazy person, but at the hospital I feel like I have endless energy even after a 16 hour shift.
Don’t be discouraged by others’ success. “Comparison is the thief of joy”. Not gonna lie, seeing some sankeys of an applicant with 4.0 & 528, 7 first author pubs in no gap years, 6000 clinical hours, CEO of 3 companies, and an A for every single T20 school made me feel like a loser at times because my application was not even the same league. But keep in mind - 1) you don’t have to go to a top ranked school to be a good doctor, and 2) the path from point A to point B is different for everyone. For some, it’s short and straight; for others, it’s slow, bumpy, loopy, and goes backwards at times. But getting to point B in the end is what matters most. Medicine is not supposed to be a competition. So just be happy for them and focus on improving yourself. We’re all going to be called Dr. ___ in the end anyway.
Don’t listen to everything that people say, especially if they haven’t even applied to medical school - such as premed advisors. The only time I ever talked to my undergrad premed advisor, he pulled out a chart with a bell curve showing the likelihood of a med school acceptance based on GPA and MCAT. He pointed to coordinate (0,0), approximately, and said “you are here” and that was pretty much the entire conversation. Take everything with a grain of salt, even from successful applicants. My friend who’s an M3 said my application had too many red flags, that I won’t get in with any community service, and that I should’ve waited another year to apply. Which honestly wasn’t even bad advice, but I ended up proving her wrong anyway.
I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this but I actually stopped talking about premed stuff irl, which improved my mood. When meeting new people I just told them I'm planning on going into research and teaching (which is still true), because if I mentioned premed, a lot of the ensuing conversations were just annoying asf - like when they ask me what my gpa is, or give me unprompted, unwarranted advice. I also kinda took a step back from my premed and med school friends because I already spend a lot of time each day worrying about my application, and the last thing I want to do is talk about it more in my free time. Another reason is because some friends would lose respect for me if I told them about my academic struggles. And personally, I absolutely hated when people told me to give up on med school, which happened a few times.
MD schools with relatively low average stat ranges are a little deceptive. I naively applied to them thinking they would be easier to get into but now I know it's not the case. Usually these schools just care more about "fit" and less about boasting high stats, and you can often tell what they value in their secondary essay questions. For example, Rush and Tulane seem to like applicants with a ton of service hours, and experience with addressing health disparities and helping underserved communities. UIllinois likes engineering students, so it’s no wonder their average GPA is lower. So even if I had better stats, I'd still probably have no chance of getting into these schools. You can also figure out good fits by going through sankeys of applicants with similar stats and ECs as you, and see which schools they had success with.
If you’re a high stat applicant that is wondering how I got in - I don’t know either. There is definitely always an aspect of luck (and unfairness, in my opinion) in the application process, and obviously I was very lucky. A lot of people have fantastic applications, do everything right, and will make great doctors one day, but still don’t get an A this cycle. Also, some adcom members are just chemistry professors, PIs, and people with an MBA degree, who hardly know anything about practicing medicine, and it’s crazy that they’re the ones deciding who’s going to be in the next generation of doctors. Just keep applying, and definitely apply to schools based on mission fit, not just their stat ranges.
There’s more I want to say but my post is already super long. You can DM me if you have any questions. I'm no expert in anything but I'll be honest and I'll try my best

2023.06.09 22:17 Big_Philosophy6121 Varicocele Story (+ Emb)
Some of my stats before I start: I am 17m, 190lbs, 6'. Typical athlete, including heavy lifting. I live in the greater Seattle area.
I would also like to give a ton of thanks to
u/ThatYoungBusinessGuy for being very informative and supportive throughout my journey, providing me information that I would never have been able to obtain otherwise, even through extensive research online.
Discovery of varicocele: Found out I had varicocele years ago, when I was about 12-14. I had a sudden pain in my left testicle that would only go away when I lifted my legs above my head. I looked online and had an inkling that it might be varicocele, but the pain just would not go away. Unfortunately, after I told my parents they panicked and took me to the ER, as we thought it might've been something like torsion. They gave me an US, confirmed that it was varicocele, and sent me home.
Progression of varicocele: It started out G1/G2, only able to be felt. It soon progressed to G3 over time, yet it never really gave me any problems. Very infrequent pain (once every month for a few minutes at most), even after lifting. I would mention my varicocele every annual visit with my primary care doctor, yet they would mention each time that if it wasn't giving me any pain, it would be fine as its main effects were decreased fertility.
My varicocele would always be there, though. A huge constant bulge when standing up/showering/going to the bathroom, and a soft, squishy mess when lying down. Last year, in Fall 2022, my primary physician did give me the information of a urologist she recommends that works at the University of Washington, an amazing hospital/health center in Washington near Seattle. However, because my varicocele wasn't giving me many problems, I just went on with my life.
Urgency in fixing: In March/April this year, it started giving me pain. Like,
really bad pain, 6-7/10, which I've never felt from my varicocele before. My job included standing for long periods of time, so it made my time hell. This persisted for a week or so, and because I was going out of state for college in September 2023, I started to want to get my condition fixed as fast as possible. I scheduled a meeting in March/April with the urologist at UW my primary care doctor gave me. However, I was going out of town in late June and leaving for college in mid August, and because my first consultation could only be scheduled in late June with him, I scheduled a meeting with another urologist at another hospital, Virginia Mason.
Virginia Mason meeting: I had my meeting in early April. Coming in, I wasn't set on whether I wanted surgery or embo. I knew I had a tight schedule, but I was willing to hear what my uro had to say.
He mentioned how he does the operation around 15 times a year, which was a cause of concern for me (you can check my post on my profile). On one hand, I wanted to get this over with, but on the other hand, I didn't really trust 15/year that much.
After having some doubts and wanting some clarification on the procedure (because he was kinda vague during our meeting), I scheduled a phone meeting with him on a Tuesday in mid April. He cleared up some specifics, but I still had a few concerns. I eventually decided to ask for a referral to an IR at UW to see if I could get embo.
IR meeting: My meeting was scheduled for mid May. The IR explained it extremely clearly and was very kind. However, he kinda strawmanned the surgical approach (he claimed that the surgery would litigate the symptomatic veins in the scrotum, which is one type of procedure, but isn't the microsurgery which is what most urologists do).
He explained that he would embolize the entire gonadal vein (which is the ISV in males). He would do it with the sandwich method, where he would use coils and then a sclerosant foam, which would irritate and close of the vein while also trickling down into side veins and also irritating them. He mentioned that it would be more painful than using only coils, but might be more effective. I was extremely confident in him as although he only did this varicocele embolization surgery around 15 times a year, he does IR embolization in other body parts many many times per year. Very collected, calm, and experienced. We scheduled my embo for June 8th, which was just yesterday.
Operation day: Checked in at 6:00am, got called in to prepare at 7:00am. They set up an IV, got me in a gown, and took my blood pressure. I met the nurse and IR before he went off to a 7:30 meeting. The nurse debriefed me, told me about the procedure/healing, gave me antibiotics through the IV, and told me that I would be given some calming medication and fentanyl for pain.
At 8:00am, I was wheeled into the operation room. There were two techs and two nurses at first. They got me prepped and hooked up to monitors, moved me onto the operating table, and hooked up my IV. They were all friendly and energetic people, joking around the entire time. The lead tech shaved my incision site (right groin area) and they set up all the radiation protection. I kept bringing my head up to look around (which was not something I was supposed to do, as it flexes the abdominal muscles) so the nurse gave me a thick cloth to prop my head up.
At around 8:30 the IR came in with a resident and a 4th year med student, they numbed the incision site, and set up a screen next to me which showed what the IR was seeing. I'm not 100% sure, but I think I was under a fluoroscopy machine (kinda like XRay?) where I could only distinguish my spine.
The screen next to me was meant for the doctors to look at when they turned around. I was able to watch the entire thing on the screen next to me. They first maneuvered the catheter to my gonadal vein, then guided a straight metal rod through the catheter. Once they reached what I assumed was the end of my ISV before it branched into the pampiniform plexus. There, they started coiling up the metal rod into coils. In the end, there were three large clumps of metal which consisted of all the coils (overall, there were 10-12 coils), with space in between where they put the sclerosant foam. Halfway through the procedure I could feel pain in my lower abdominal area, so the nurse gave me an extra dose of fentanyl.
Recovery: I was scheduled to be in recover for 2-3 hours until 12:30pm, but I stayed there until around 3:00pm. When I was supposed to be discharged at 12:30pm, my heart rate dropped considerably (high 30s to low 40s) and my blood pressure dropped to 100 something. However, these issues were mainly due to hydration, and after hooking me up to saline for a few hours I was able to leave. The entire time, I was told to keep my right leg straight to prevent the entry vein from rupturing.
When I first left, pain on my left side was around a 2-3, while my incision site was around a 3-5 in pain level. The pain in my left side was mainly due to the sclerosant foam, which would leak from my ISV and cause general pain and irritation in the area. When I got home, I just lay down on my couch/bed the entire day.
As I'm typing this in my chair the next day, pain is 0-1 for both my left and right side. The incision site is still giving a bit of a problem when I walk around/stretch the area, but my left side is giving me the most problem. The pain on my flank/lower abdominal area is 0-1 normally, but a 1-2 when walking or coughing.
Varicocele status: I feel so much better. It might just be placebo, but my left testicle is feeling much cooler than before. When standing, the varicocele is considerably smaller and feels hard. Considering that it takes 3-5 months for my body to adjust and redirect blood flow, the improvement after one day is incredible. No more fat ugly bulge when going to the bathroom, no more distant, aching pain. I was even surprised at how I am able to subconsciously notice a difference - I was used to feeling my underwear against my scrotum on the left side as a result of my enlarged veins, but with the reduction in size, I'm surprised at how much empty space there is and how much smaller my veins are.
Sorry for the long story/poor grammar. I quickly typed this up and just wanted to share my story here, especially because this subreddit (and especially YoungBusinessGuy) was a huge source of support and information for me. I'll provide updates after a few months (I have an ultrasound scheduled for Aug 8), but for now, I feel much better. I'm feeling possibly dilated veins on my right side, so I might be back, but hopefully I'll be able to put this in the past.

2023.06.09 22:00 chaosdunk69 32 [MF4F] #LosAngeles #Torrance - SoCal F*ck Buddies Seeking Third for July House Sitting 7/7-7/14 (32M, 50F)
Hey all! Hows it going, my friend with benefits and I are looking to do a little experimenting this summer. Ideally it would be when I house sit so a family friend in early July so here's a little about us and hopefully we can link up and have some fun.
Here's our stats just so you can size us up: I'm 32, 6'0 tall, white/mexican mixed brown hair and eyes, 175lbs, fit but not jacked, think a dad bod, 7 inches and thick cock, college educated, drink but don't smoke unless its 420 but mostly stick to vaping weed, have a car, have a job, easy to get a long with.
She's 50, 5'6, dark brown hair, thick and curvy asian, nice tits, squirts like a fountain, also likes a few drinks and smokes, similarly employed self sufficient etc.
We both met a few years ago amidst the heavier times of the pandemic and started to hook up on and off. Lately we've been hanging out frequently enough and experimenting a bit more and we are ready to have some fun and set up a threesome. We are both ready for this, this is strictly casual as are we and just another way for us to indulge and enjoy our private escapades. While this was originally my fantasy, she's into it as well so don't worry about one of us getting cold feet, we're ready to roll.
What we are looking for: someone, who's interested in experimenting with a casual couple and having some fun with us. This isn't some super deep "we want our unicorn" corny situation, we're just two horny adults who like to get together and indulge in that and we want someone else to come and do the same. As far. Age wise, we obviously have a pretty significant gap and don't mind that either, you can be 18-60. I think in that regard our only preference would be that you have some experience or be willing to learn and comfortable with learning if you don't. Other than that we both prefer and appreciate thickecurvier bodies so front of the line if that's you. Beyond that we have no preference in ethnicity. Just be clean/STD free since we are and ideally being on birth control is a big plus. And most importantly be horny and ready for some fun.
Anyways, hope we didn't talk your ear off. Get at us if you are down to chat and get to know us and plan something for July or possibly sooner if we hit it off and want to meet. She's in the valley and i'm in the South Bay of the Los Angeles area. She can host sometimes but ideally we'd be hosting in the Torrance area when it comes time to house sit. We have messengers for moving off reddit. Your ideal response includes a little about yourself and some pics so we can send you some in return.
Lets have some fun

2023.06.09 20:34 picklebae123 KJD cycle recap
Posting for a data point/to help people applying this year!
stats: 4.1, 17low, KJD, nURM softs: part time work through college, a few orgs (basically no softs lol)
I submitted all apps ~ middle of Novembebeginning of December

WL: Chicago, Penn, UVA, Duke, Berkeley
This time last year I started studying for the LSAT and I was totally convinced I would need to take a gap year to get work experience if I wanted to get accepted to any schools (my goal was GMU)
Thanks to LSATdemon/Thinking LSAT (I love you Ben and Nathan!) and this sub I ended up applying and I couldn’t be happier with my results🥹
Fun fact I wasn’t even going to apply to Harvard bc of the $100 application fee but my mom convinced me to so thank you mommy❤️
To the future KJDs - apply broadly + listen to your mom! Hahahaha

2023.06.09 20:07 bunnyfun404 High TEAS score or high math grade?
I took stats a couple of years ago but I barely passed with a C. My community college says I can use another math grade for my gpa (algebra preferably) but I'd have to take it this summer to have it ready for time of application, which is this fall. It's very time consuming and I don't think I'd be able to study for my TEAS. Question is, should I study for the summer for a high TEAS? Or risk getting an average score, or raise my gpa with the potential of getting an A in algebra?

- Proche 20%, plus 19% special teams
- Wallace 13%, plus 51% special teams
OVERALL IMPRESSIONS:
- Duv is clearly a level above the others, and stats-wise was equal to if not better than Robinson. He's coming off injury, but I'm excited to see what he could do under Monken: On a per game basis, Duv ranked 1st in 5 of these 8 metrics. And in the 3 Duv wasn't 1st in (yds/rec, lng, rec/g), he was very close. More importantly, Duv consistently ranked 1st on a per game basis in 2022 over WRs that didn't have Roman as an OC; even with Ricard and the TEs taking all the targets, Duv beat the others. Most intriguing: Duv's catch rate was much higher than the others at 75.5%, a full 11% higher than 2d place Robinson. His drop rate is also very low at just 2%. Part of this is probably Duv being used almost exclusively for jet sweeps rather than tougher catches in coverage over the middle, but Duv still averaged more TD/game last year than the others.
- Agholor and Robinson are pretty similar: Of these 8 per game metrics from 2022, Robinson was better in 4 of them: yds/g, 1D/g, rec/g, catch %/g. Agholor was better in yd/rec, TD/g (barely, they're basically tied at 0.13 and 0.12), LNG/g, and yds/tgt. The only stats where there's a noticeable difference were 1D/g, Robinson was double Agholor's last year. Agholor's longest rec was 44 vs Robinson's 31. Robinson's catch %/g was better at 64 vs 58.5. There also wasn't much of a difference between depth of target either, Robinson was 6.1 vs Agholor's 6.8.
- Production from last year doesn't really justify a higher contract for Agholor: A bit subjective, but Robinson and Agholor were pretty similar stats-wise last year. We gave Agholor a 1y/3.25m deal with 3.25m guaranteed, we got Robinson for 1y/1.035m with 895k guaranteed. Personally I wanted to keep Robinson but seems like he wanted more money. Details for his recent Rams contract aren't available yet. I'd guess we wanted to keep Robinson but since he wanted more money we weren't willing to keep him, leaving us to try finding other WRs in FA. Treadwell cost 1y/1.035, tbh I would've kept Robinson after he proved he helped the pass game a lot. I don't think they saved a ton of money but it all depends on what Robinson was asking for- considering he just went to the Rams who have the 4th lowest cap, I'd guess Robinson might've wanted to go to a team where he wouldn't be behind Andrews/OBJ/Bateman. I felt Robinson did more for the WR situation than everyone except Bateman and Duv, sad to see him go.
- Treadwell is a slight upgrade from Proche but not by much: Their career catch rates are nearly identical- Treadwell 62.9, Proche 62.5. Proche seemed to have a down year vs 2021, his '21 catch rate was 80% but in '22 it dropped to 47.1%. Treadwell's '22 catch rate was noticeably better at 60%, but Proche still finished with 20 more yds. In 2022, they tied in 1Ds, but Treadwell's drop rate was also a lot higher (10 vs 5.9). Treadwell had more yds/g (7 vs 4.1). Treadwell adds size though, which is something this team needed: Treadwell's 6'2 215 vs Proche 5'11 195. Surprisingly, while Treadwell's been in the NFL since 2016, he's only a year older than Proche, who was drafted in 2020. Proche was 24 when he got drafted. Proche didn't run the 40 so idk his time, but I'd guess it's similar to Treadwell's 4.63.
- Duv played a lot more than I expected in 2022: A lot of us felt Duv was barely on the field last year, but surprisingly he played 69% of the snaps last year. His usage actually went up in 2022- he had 51% in '21 and 34% in '20. Seeing him play more snaps than Agholor last year was very surprising.
- Proche per game in '22 wasn't that different from Wallace: Proche is def a better player, but wasn't as impactful as I expected. He averaged just 4.13 yds/g vs Wallace's 3.67, neither scored a TD last year, their longest rec was identical, their rec/g was basically identical (Proche 0.5 vs Wallace 0.4). The differences are still there though, Proche's career catch rate is 16% higher. Neither were targeted much at all in 2022: Proche 17 tgts vs Wallace's just 7. Wallace's drop rate last year was very high at 14.3% vs Proche's 5.9%. Considering all these WRs are generally in the slot WR role, Wallace is gonna have to be Boykin's ST replacement to avoid getting cut. Wallace does play a lot more ST (like 30% more) than the others, so they seem to like him there but he better get damn good at blocking.
-Agholor's career catch rate isn't great and is the 2nd lowest next to Wallace, but isn't that different from Robinson/Treadwell/Proche: Proche's per game career catch rate is 59.3%, which as expected isn't great. It was 59.9% with the Eagles so there's some truth to the meme. However, it's only 3% worse than Proche and Treadwell and only 4% worse than Robinson, so it's not like it's double digits worse.
- Agholor has never really played special teams: Interesting that despite being a ST coach, Harbaugh got Agholor who has basically never played special teams: Agholor was on ST for 5% of the snaps in 2016, 1% in 2019, and then 6 of his 8 seasons with 0% of the snaps on ST. Every other WR on the list played some ST last year except for Agholor, and Robinson played only 1% of the ST snaps in 2022. Thought that was kinda interesting and unexpected.
- Proche was on the field a lot less than I expected last year: After Bateman got hurt it seemed like it was just Proche and Robinson at WR with Duv being used for occasional sweeps, but no, Duv played a whopping 49% more of the offense snaps than Proche. With Wallace playing just 13% of the snaps, Proche actually wasn't on the field much more than Wallace was last year- Proche only played 7% more snaps than Wallace last year. Proche is def at a disadvantage vs Agholor though considering he had Roman, so I don't hold his weak production against him that much, although it's nice to have competition in the WR room. That being said, Agholor also got stuck with Patricia. For a 6th rounder, Proche's been pretty successful and should be proud of that. Seems like a really nice dude, on a personality basis he's always been 1 of my favs and I'll always root for him.
I was wondering how Agholor and Robinson compared to some of the other WRs, so I did the research and wanted to share it with the Flock so hopefully y'all found it interesting :)
