| Been lurking and reading. Settled on The Sentinel. I love creative writing, Journaling, prompts, fountain pens.. so for Camp Nano đ I'm doing my first role play game. No idea what I'm doing but I'll have fun doing it. Thank you for posting links and recommendations for others. Can't wait to learn about systems and oracles and everything else I'm currently clueless about. I'm continuing with this journal game and will watch YouTube recommendations I've found on this sub. submitted by AdFlaky3806 to Solo_Roleplaying [link] [comments] |

2023.03.30 17:54 BillReel Joseph Smith's First Vision in Context: A Comparative Analysis
| This post is connected the the episode we did on Mormonism Live https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qpl11qiv-28 A.) Joseph Smithâs First Vision did not occur in a vacuum - Burned Over District
- Second Great Awakening
- visions of divine beings
- Mysticism
- speaking in tongues
- falling down
- bodily shaking
- visions
- A number of these new religious groups, now called ârestorationists,â similarly believed that their churches were the restored church of Jesus Christ.
B.) Contemporary First Visions - Elias Smith
- (17 June 1769 â 29 June 1846) was a preacher, physician, journalist and clergyman. Smith, along with the preacher Abner Jones, founded a group of Christian Churches in New England that eventually merged with other like-minded, regional groups to become the denomination known as the Christian Connexion. Smith founded The Herald of Gospel Liberty in 1808. Smith spent his later years as a vigorous proponent and practitioner of the Thomsonian system of herbal medicine, though he and Thomson had a public dispute and falling out in 1827
- His Book Imageâwent into the woods one morning after a stick of timber ⌠as I walked along a large log that lay above the snow, my foot slipped and I fell partly under the log ⌠While in this situation, a light appeared to shine from heaven, not only into my head, but into my heart. This was something very strange to me, and what I had never experienced before. My mind seemed to rise in that light to the throne of God and the Lamb, and while thus gloriously led, what appeared to my understanding was expressed in Rev. xiv. 1. âAnd I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Fatherâs name written in their foreheads.â The Lamb once slain appeared to my understanding, and while viewing him, I felt such love to him as I never felt to any thing earthly. My mind was calm and at peace with God through the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world. The view of the Lamb on mount Sion gave me joy unspeakable and full of glory. It is not possible for me to tell how long I remained in that situation, as every thing earthly was gone from me for some time. After admiring the glory of the Lamb for some time, I began to think of the situation my body was in, and rose up to return home. Looking around me, every object was changed, and a bright glory appeared on every thing around me. All things praised God with me.â

- âI thought how happy must Jesus Christ have been when he suffered for sinners. It would yield some satisfaction to me, if my misery can be a cause of happiness to others; but when I came to the place of prayer, had kneeled down, and closed my eyes, with my hands uplifted toward the heavens, I saw Jesus Christ at the right hand of God looking down upon me, and God the Father looking upon him. The look of Jesus on me removed the burden of my sins, while he spoke these words, âBe faithful until death and this shall be thy place of rest.â I never had seen Jesus Christ before, nor heard his voice, nor ever had a sense of his intercession at the right hand of God for me till now.â
- Later recounting a dream âsaw heaven open, and Jesus at the right hand of God, and the Heavenly hosts surrounding the throne, adoring the Father and the Son in the most sublime strainsâ
- âAnd we beheld the glory of the Son, on the right hand of the Father ⌠And saw the holy angels, and them who are sanctified before his throne, worshiping God, and the Lamb, who worship him forever and everâ

- âAt length, as I lay apparently upon the brink of eternal woe, seeing nothing but death before me, suddenly there came a sweet flow of the love of God to my soul, which gradually increased. At the same time, there appeared a small gleam of light in the room, above the brightness of the sun, then at his meridian, which grew brighter and brighter: As this light and love increased, my sins began to separate, and the Mountain [of sin] removed towards the east. At length, being in an ecstasy of joy, I turned to the other side of the bed, (whether in the body or out I cannot tell, God knoweth) there "I saw two spirits, which I knew at the first sight. But if I had the tongue of an Angel I could not describe their glory, for they brought the joys of heaven with them. One was God, my Maker, almost in bodily shape like a man. His face was, as it were a flame of Fire, and his body, as it had been a Pillar and a cloud. In looking steadfastly to discern features, I could see none, but a small glimpse would appear in some other place. Below him stood Jesus Christ my Redeemer, in perfect shape like a man---His face was not ablaze, but had the countenance of fire, being bright and shining. His Father's will appeared to be his! All was condescension, peace, and love."I was filled with the sacred flame, and the glory of God; I thought one spark more in my soul would have destroyed this mortal frame!! I was happy!!! happy!!! happy!!! I wanted ten thousand tongues to sing their sweet, their glorious praise!! It was a heaven here below for the space of half an hour!! But how infinitely short must I come of describing their glory, for want of language to paint my feelings! For the joys of Heaven so far surpass all bounds of description, or human conception, that christians here below come infinitely short of forming a competent idea of the joys that await the righteous: âEye hath not seen, Ear hath not heard, neither hath it entered into the heart of man to conceive of those good things, the Father hath prepared for them that love him.'â
- Norris Stearns, experienced the vision and published it in 1815, in Greenfield, Massachusetts---not far from where the Joseph Smith Senior family lived in Vermont. The most intriguing aspect of Stearns' "vision," is how he described the Father and the Son as two separate, distinct, human-like personages. LDS leaders have insisted separate beings in the godhead was one of the "truths" that had been lost from the world until Joseph Smith's First Vision. It was a major point in the late apostle Hugh B. Brown's 1950's sermon "Profile of a Prophet." Joseph could have been inspired by Stearns, or some other contemporary source.

- a teacher at the Palmyra Academy, declared in 1825, Jesus appeared âin a glare of brightness exceeding tenfold the brilliancy of the meridian [noonday] sun.â The Lord told him, âI commission you to go and tell mankind that I am come; and bid every man to shout victory.â

- Asa Wild was almost a dozen years older than Joseph Smith, and it is probable the two never met. Like Joseph, Wild was born in Vermontâin 1794 at West Fairlee, about twenty miles northeast of Josephâs birthplace of Sharon. Most of what we know about Asa Wild comes from a pamphlet he published in 1824, entitled A Short Sketch of the Religious Experience and Spiritual Travels of Asa Wild, of Amsterdam, N. Y. - BYU Article âThe âPrognosticationâ of Asa Wildâ
- It seemed as if my mindâŚwas struck motionless, as well as into nothing, before the awful and glorious majesty of the Great Jehovah. He then spakeâŚHe also told me, that every denomination of professing christians had become extremely corrupt....
- Solomon Chamberlain (Meridian Magazine Quoting Richard Bushman)
- âDissatisfied with the religions he had tried, Chamberlin prayed for further guidance, and in 1816, according to his account, "the Lord revealed to me in a vision of the night an angel," whom Chamberlin asked about the right way. The angel told him that the churches were corrupt and that God would soon raise up an apostolic church. Chamberlin printed up an account of his visions and was still distributing them and looking for the apostolic church when he stopped in Palmyra.â

- Major parallels between Smith and Finney
- Visited palmyra in 1831 (hosea stout)Parrallels1.) Finney felt despair over the eternal state of his soul2.) Finney chose and went into a "grove of woods" to pour out his soul in solitude3.) Upon making his petition Finney found that he could not pray. When he attempted to pray he became "dumb," having "nothing to say to God." Rustling of leaves nearby led him to believe that other individuals were in his presence. Ultimately that thought led him to such a sense of conviction of personal wickedness that it took possession of him. Charles attempted to pray several times without success, leading him to the verge of despair. He recollected that "a great sinking and discouragement came over me at this point, and I felt almost too weak to stand upon my knees."4.) Finney saw a light and Jesus Christ appeared to him5.) Charles Finney also endured persecution for sharing his experience

In âMormonism LIVE: 110: Francis Gladden Bishop - Succession Crisis, Orgies, & Sacred Relicsâ ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EL31hPn6m0&t ) we discussed his early spiritual experiences that led to him believing his mothers prophecies that he was the âFlying Rollâ and even included him claiming he was ordained by Nephi and two other Nephite Disciple Heavenly Messengers who came in the identity of Peter James and John. - Alexander Campbell described the experiences he was hearing others have
- Enthusiasm flourishes.... This man was regenerated when asleep, by a vision of the night. That man heard a voice in the woods, saying, 'Thy sins be forgiven thee.' A third saw his Savior descending to the tops of the trees at noon day" (The Christian Baptist, Vol. 1, pp.148-49).

James Brewster 1826â1909 - In 1836, at the age of 10, Brewster began to claim that he had been visited by the Angel Moroni, the same angel that Joseph Smith claimed had led him to the golden plates. In November 1837, due to his persistent claims of being a prophet, Brewster was disfellowshipped from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at age 11. (Joseph has had enough of kids claiming visions)

- His obituary mentions him seeing God the father and Christ both at 9 years old in 1832 (same year as Smith's first recounting a first vision)âIt seems that the Lord had respect unto this lover of righteousness, for when he was but about nine years of age, he had a remarkable vision, in which he talked with the Father and many of the ancient prophets face to face, and beheld the Son of God coming in his glory.

He was editor and Thomas Marsh publisher of the Elderâs Journal where the obituary appeared.
- The Milk Strippings event with Marshâs father Thomas Marsh the apostle occurred in 1838 as well. Remember Smith was secretly married to Lucinda Pendleton Morgan Harris who was in the dispute with Marshâs wife.
C.) Conclusion - Richard Bushman - Josephâs Vision fits right in with other contemporary visions because it looks like all the other visions everyone in upstate NEW YORK is having.

2023.03.30 15:49 BillReel Joseph Smith's First Vision in Context: A Comparative Analysis

- 3rd Hibbard slide Later recounting a dream âsaw heaven open, and Jesus at the right hand of God, and the Heavenly hosts surrounding the throne, adoring the Father and the Son in the most sublime strainsâ

2023.03.29 23:27 ExoticaTikiRoom The fictitious âdeathâ of the Texas Observer
| by Jim Hightower Willie Nelson, a very lively 89-year-old, has recorded a playful little tune refuting speculation by some that he had become the late Willie Nelson. Not so fast, protested the peopleâs troubadour, singing: âI woke up still not dead again today The Internet said I had passed away But if I died I wasnât dead to stay I woke up still not dead again today.â The same protest could now be warbled by the venerable Texas Observer, the feisty, maverick voice of progressive politics and dig-it-out anti-establishment journalism in the Lone Star State. On Monday, this âjournal of free voicesâ (which maintains independence by accepting no corporate advertising, even though that means it constantly has to scramble to stay afloat), was abruptly pronounced dead. An article by a competing publication, the multimillion-dollar corporate funded Texas Tribune, practically gloats: âTexas Observer Closing⌠an end to 68 years of publication.â Rumors of its death, however are just that. Yes, the Observerâs finances are severely strained, and the board of directors shouldâve been alert to the fact that the magazine was spending at an unsustainable/irresponsible level. But the Tribuneâs claim that the board abruptly voted for âclosingâ down is false, wrong, untrue! To the contrary, the board only voted for a temporary hiatus. At the same time, it committed to raising large sums of money, while reorganizing for a healthy financial future. Far from rushing to the cemetery, board members, staffers, previous donors, and former editors (a majority group the Tribune did not interview before issuing its obituary) has stepped forward to help with this rejuvenation. Full disclosure: Iâve been a loyal Observerite since my college days; I was a longtime friend and neighbor of legendary Observer editor Molly Ivins; and I followed her as the publicationâs populist-spirited editor for two years. So Iâm fully in the revivalist camp. However, that doesnât make me naĂŻve. There is no question that financial clots and a series of internal editors-v- board conflicts have weakened the publication in the past couple of years â but you donât then just snuff out its fiery spark of progressive activism, which is needed now more than ever! Of course the Observer must adapt and streamline. Such national writers as Ralph Nader, Michael Moore, Ijeoma Oluo, Heather Cox Richardson, Judd Legum, and myself are moving from print to email delivery on innovative platforms like Substack to connect with todayâs diverse progressive community. Since the time of the revolutionary pamphleteers, leftist communicators/agitators have had to make such structural media adjustments, and we must do so now⌠unless we just quit and rely on corporations to finance the acceptable political views. Indeed, the Observer exists because it must â for the same reason it was founded in 1954. In that time, the stateâs media barons deliberately avoided offending their readers with unpleasantness about racism, labor exploitation, legislative corruption, etc. For example, even if 3,000 people rallied in Dallas to oppose the poll tax â not a peep about it the next day in the Dallas Morning News. The cityâs impish liberals even coined a banner quote for that paper: âIf It Happens In Dallas, Itâs News To Us.â So scrappy groups of progressives from across the state pooled grassroots donations to create their own source of news, information, and ideas: The Texas Observer. It still provides journalism that matters, challenging the Powers That Be, and rallying the Powers That Ought to Be. Despite one alarmist, misleading article, the Observer, is not dead. And, in the spirit of Willieâs song, even if it had âdiedâ this week, it wouldnât be âdead to stay,â because itâs not just a publication â itâs both an idea and a political necessity. submitted by ExoticaTikiRoom to texas [link] [comments] |

2023.03.29 13:31 OSINTUkraine Ron Johnson casts doubts on continued U.S. aid helping Ukraine in ... - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
2023.03.29 02:58 KitchenDeparture6218 Thoughtful reflection on obsession?.. some French word, I don't know.
Disclaimer: The following is ponderous, fucking ponderous. The author of this post is doing too much!
I recently chanced upon an eleven-hour Eric The Medically Proportionate Actor playlist and listened to it over the course of a few days. That incorrigible, concupiscent, libidinal, coquettish, credulous, conspiratorial, churlish, dissatisfied little angel was truly one of a kind, and for better or for worse, there will never be another ETM.
Can I tell you my favorite Eric story real quick? I was once driving to Oakland from Los Angeles. Itâs about a 5-hour drive - but, it can be up to noine with traffic. I had an Eric playlist going, and about four hours into it, where the turn-off for Sacramento is, Ericâs obituary episode came on. I was driving past this sprawling, preplanned, northern California, cookie-cutter community, the kind I always imagined Eric and Sweet Jon lived in. Iâm driving past that and listening to Yawn Yawson talk about his dead friend and his lugubrious final days and, no lie Robin, I had to pull over to the side of the road I was crying so hard.
This ainât The Astrophysical Journal, pal, but, in a shense, in âThe Stern Universeâ, Howard is the sun â everything revolves around him. Benjy is a black hole, Fred is the cold vacuum of space, and Robin is Uranus, but ETM was a planet, too. And as a planet, he had many satellites in his orbit.
Part of what Made (emphasis on the past participle) the Stern Show so great was that it was a collection of misfits and serious freaks that came together organically to create something original and beautiful and Eric, not for nothinâ, was the most beautiful freak of them all.
On GP one in pink, youâll find my assorted thoughts on aforementioned satellites.
TL;DR - My opinion on some of Eric The Actorâs friends, foes, foils, and fellators.
Shuli Egar (Friend): As insufferable as Shuli can be, his Wack Pack Contributions are huuuuuuuuge. Plus, he got Ericâs goodie bag back at the block party in San Diego - Eric definitely appreciated that. 6.5/10
Ralph Cirella (Foe): Shut up, berry-faced idiot. 3.5/10
Howard Stern (Foil): Despite what you see today, astute fans may remember that Howital was once the greatest radio performer of all time. When I was sixteen, I heard Lesbian Dial-a-Date and I knew this man revolutionalized radio. Howard played with Eric like LeBron James plays with a basketball. 10/10
Arthur Lange (Foil): Can I tell you a quick story? My dad (not a Stern fan) played on an amateur softball team with Artie in NYC in the 90s. He says Artie was the nicest, funniest guy he ever met. Even though he canceled his show and was costin' Sequoia money, his interactions with Eric are the stuff of legend. Thanks for calling, Eric. Aaaaand, next caller. 10/10
Johnny Fratto (Friend): Boy, oh boy. This is a hard one. Johnny has been pissing me off lately. He really was one of the most annoying callers: that grating accent; long, boring stories about his gay kids (Iâm sorry I called your kids gay); constant interrupting with shameless, creepy plugs. But, he also facilitated many of Ericâs greatest performances. 5/10
Kendra (Fellator): I've been thinking about, and... sheâs like, the meanest girl in the world. 0/10
Gary Dellâabitio (Foil): Garyâs (and Eric's) greatest weakness is that he has zero ability to recognize when heâs being messed with. They played off each other perfectly because they both truly believed it was all real. 10/10
Fred Norris (Foe): If you press that button⌠one more time. (10/10)
Vince From LA (Foe): Maybe the worst caller in the history of the show (close race between him and Pittsburg Pete), but wow could he get under Ericâs skin. Probably a bodybuilder on steroids. 4/10
Gonzo Shitcock - not to be confused with âGonzo Sternâ on Facebook (Foil): Too self-aware to ever truly be entertaining, still pretty funny. 6/10
We want to hear from you! Did I miss anyone, what other space junk was floating around Eric?
Bye for now.

2023.03.28 17:26 ThomasDaykin Marcus Center parking ramp covers 2.5 acres at a key downtown site. It will be targeted for redevelopment.
Subscribers only. TLDR:
The Marcus Performing Arts Center parking garage, which covers 2.5 acres at a key downtown site, will again be targeted by Milwaukee officials as a potential redevelopment site.
The parking structure, located on the block just north of the performing arts center, is owned by the City of Milwaukee and leased to Marcus Center for the Performing Arts Inc., a private, nonprofit corporation.
Officials from Marcus Center and the Department of City Development had little to say about the imminent request for proposals when contacted by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

2023.03.27 12:54 okllamamama On March 31st, 2020, Beth Potter and her husband, Robin Carre, were found shot to death in UW-Madison's arboretum. Both were killed by their daughter's then-boyfriend.
| Just thought I'd share one of the cases from my hometown that has always disturbed me...not sure if this has been posted & hope I'm doing this right. This is a bit long...but I know how much I enjoy it when you guys write up lengthy posts. *** Beth Potter (52) and her husband, Robin Carre (57), were both found shot and left for dead in a ditch on the chilly morning of March 31st, 2020. On March 31, 2020 at 6:28AM, Madison Police were dispatched to the UW Arboretum in reference to a report from two joggers that they had stumbled across what appeared to be two human bodies covered in blood laying alongside the trail. The bodies were discovered only a few hundred yards away from the Arboretum entrance. When police arrived at the Arboretum, they were met with a horrifying scene. According to the criminal complaint, Beth and Robin were found off the roadside, surrounded by pools of blood and shell casings, indicating that the crime had occurred at the site. Prosecutors would later describe the killings as âexecution-styleâ and " calculated, cold-blooded, and senseless." Although it was only 30 degrees that morning, Beth was found in only her socks and pajamas, with no shoes, and Robin was discovered lying face down in his underwear with a visible head wound. When paramedics arrived, Beth appeared to be showing minimal signs of life but was sadly pronounced deceased at UW-Hospital at 7:54AM. Robin was pronounced dead at the scene and was " cold to the touch," according to responding Officers. The autopsy revealed that both had been shot in the head at close range, with Beth suffering from gunshot wounds to the back of her head and upper arm and Robin suffering from a gunshot wound to the left side of his head. https://preview.redd.it/q5sl08vcgaqa1.png?width=1428&format=png&auto=webp&s=1f7dc493640cdf1dd0566cbeb1d2e2c0480ba620 The Victims Beth Potter was a family medicine physician, an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the director of Employment Health Services for UW Health. She would later be pronounced dead at the very hospital she was affiliated with. Bethâs husband, Robin, had a PhD in European History and was an educator and coaching director at the Regent Soccer Club. Both Beth & Robin were beloved members of the community and were described as having a reputation of being generous and extremely kind. You can read their obituaries here. Beth Potter and her husband Robin Carre Escalating Tensions Beth and Robin had three children, including their adopted daughter, Miriam Potter Carre. Before the murders of Beth & Robin took place, Miriam had been dating one of her fellow classmates, Khari Sanford. They began dating in 2019. Khari came from a challenging background; He had experienced homelessness, significant child-hood trauma, conflicts with his previous foster parents, and had attempted suicide on several occasions preceding the murders. According to court documents and interviews, Khari and Miriam also had an extremely turbulent relationship and were frequently in conflict with Miriamâs parents, Beth & Robin. Miriam testified that Khari had told her he âfelt like a slaveâ living under the rules set by Miriamâs parents. On the stand, Miriam told the court that as their relationship progressed, her parents had become increasingly concerned that the relationship was negatively impacting her mental health and grades; Miriam read a text exchange between them where they both expressed their annoyance with Miriam's parents' "white savior" complex, to which Khari responded via text that it was "cool" because they were "gonna die." Miriam claimed that she did not take his statement literally because Khari had a pattern of using violent language when he was upset. Shortly before school was canceled due to COVID in March 2020, a classmate came forward with information regarding a conversation he had overheard between Miriam & Khari during their ceramics class. The witness stated that he overheard them discussing how they could get money and that Miriam told Khari that her parents had "bands" of money. A forensic search also extracted a photo (pictured below) from Miriam's phone that showed Khari pointing a "glock handgun" at the lens, which was sent to Miriam during November 2019. Up until approximately two weeks before the murders, Beth & Robin had allowed Khari to reside at their home with them. Friction quickly emerged due to the Potter-Carres' household rules, such as curfews or restrictions on sleeping in the same room. Miriam testified that Khari rarely interacted with her parents and that he would sometimes even refuse to respond when they greeted him. Tension between the couple and Miriamâs parents further escalated due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to one of Beth's colleagues, Beth was immunocompromised due to the medications she was on. The complaint stated that Beth had told a colleague just before her murder that she was extremely frustrated and stressed because Miriam & Khari were failing to abide by their COVID protocols, such as quarantining and social distancing. Conflict over the household rules in conjunction with COVID guidelines prompted Beth & Robin to rent an Airbnb for Miriam & Khari to move into until they could find permanent housing. The Airbnb had been rented just two weeks prior to their deaths. Photo that Khari sent Miriam in November 2019. The Night of March 30th According to Miriamâs testimony, who was granted immunity, on the night of March 30th, Miriam & Khari were watching the Hangover 2 at their Airbnb. At around 10:15PM, Khari told Miriam that he was going to borrow and drive Robinâs white van (pictured below) to a pawn shop nearby. Around 11:00PM, Miriam began to send Khari numerous texts and calls but was unable to reach him. Phone records revealed that she texted Khari âAt least bring back the car and have someone get you from here. I donât feel safe here,â and then minutes later âwhy would you put me in this position.â Khari never responded to Miriamâs efforts to get ahold of him but returned later around midnight with his friend, Aliâjah Larrue, who Miriam claimed she did not know well. Cell site data recorded that Khari's phone was back at their Airbnb at 12:10AM. When Miriam asked them where they had been, neither disclosed to her where they had been or what they had been doing. The next morning, Khari and Miriam woke up around 11:00AM, and Khari suggested to Miriam that they drive to the Arboretum to smoke. When they arrived, police were everywhere, and Miriam testified that when she first heard the news of the discovered bodies and relayed this to Khari, he responded with âThatâs crazy.â Later that evening, Miriam would discover that the bodies in the news belonged to her parents, and she stated that she ceased all communications with Khari from that day forward. Photo of the white van that Miriam's parents lent her and Khari. This was the van used to kidnap and transport Beth & Robin. Investigation, Arrest, and Trial Khari and Ali'jah were both arrested in early April, 2020 by Madison Police in connection with the murders of Beth Potter & Robin Carre and were subsequently charged on April 16th, 2022. Investigation following the murders revealed through surveillance footage and cell-phone data that the white van loaned to Miriam and Khari by her parents and that was driven by Khari on March 30th, had visited both Beth & Robins' residence as well as the Arboretum on the night of the murders. Further analysis revealed that Khariâs friend, Ali'jah's cell phone records were consistent with the coordinates of Khari and the van. Testimony from Ali'jah Larrue During Khari's trial, which began on May 17th, 2022, Ali'jah, a key witness for the prosecution, told the court he had known Khari since middle school, and that although he had been present the night of the murders, he had no prior knowledge of Khari's plan to kidnap and kill Beth & Robin. Like Miriam and Khari, Ali'jah was also enrolled at West High School at the time of the murders. According to Ali'jah's testimony regarding what occurred on the night of March 30th, Ali'jah stated that Khari had asked him to hangout, and had later picked him up in the van. Later that night, Khari & Ali'jah drove to the residence of Beth & Robin, where Khari parked the car and entered the home. Ali'jah told the court that he saw Khari exit the home with Beth & Robin, with his gun pointed at their backs. Khari forced the couple into the van and demanded that Ali'jah drive to the UW Arboretum. Ali'jah testified that he remembered being frightened, "because I didn't know what was going to happen...there was a gun involved and people I didn't know." Ali'jah recalled that during the car ride, Khari berated the couple with questions, asking "the male and female why they didn't care for their daughter." Ali'jah further stated that Beth had attempted to answer but Khari refused to allow either of them to speak. After they arrived at the Arboretum, Ali'jah said that Khari quickly exited the vehicle, ordered Beth & Robin to get out, and then proceeded to shoot Robin first, followed by Beth. Khari then demanded that Ali'jah drive them both back to the Airbnb. Beth & Robin were left behind at the Arboretum. Additional Evidence & Testimony The prosecution would argue that on March 30th, Khari and Aliâjah had driven to the Potter-Carre residence, kidnapped the couple at gunpoint, and then forced them into the van. The van was then driven to the Arboretum, where Beth & Robin were both shot in the head and abandoned. Further, although Robin was pronounced dead at the scene the following morning on March 31st, Beth had managed to survive until around 8:00AM that morning. Prosecutor Brown made note of this in his opening statement, telling the jury that Beth had "died the next morning in the hospital, after remaining alive in the ditch throughout the night next to her dead husband.â Footage recovered near the Airbnb also captured Khari & Ali'jah returning to their Airbnb on the night of March 30th and discarding evidence into the woods nearby, including mail addressed to Beth and a broken cell phone. Ali'jah further testified that both he & Khari had used baby wipes to clean the inside of the van after Beth & Robin had been shot. On April 4th, another witness came forward, informing officers that he had overheard a phone call between Khari and Ali'jah on March 31st. The witness claimed that after Khari learned that one of the victims was still possibly alive (Beth), he told Ali'jah, âI swear I hit them, how did they survive.â Khari also allegedly told the witness that he had shot both victims in âthe back of the head,â and that Alijah had been present during the shooting. Additional surveillance video was also produced during trial that captured Khari at an ATM using the victims' debit cards days after the murders. The footage showed Khari attempting but failing to withdraw several denominations of $300 because he did not have the cards' pin numbers. Other evidence came from the digital forensics analyzed on Khari's phone during the night of the murders and shortly after them. Phone records showed that Khari had googled the address of Beth & Robins' residence using McDonald's wifi and that his phone had connected to the Potter-Carre home wifi not long after. Following the days after the murders, Khari's phone browser history contained searches such as "how long does it take to know who died?" and "how long does it take to die?" Data also showed that Khari's "find my phone" feature had been disabled following the murder and that a police traffic scanner was downloaded and then quickly deleted from his phone at 4:08 a.m. on March 31st. Sentencing & Aftermath Khari Sandford was found guilty of two counts of first-degree intentional homicide in May 2022. Khari was sentenced to two life sentences without the opportunity for parole, and his accomplice, Aliâjah Larrue, pleaded guilty to two counts of felony murder kidnapping as a party to a crime. Aliâjah was sentenced to eight years, followed by 10 years of supervised release. Both Khari and Ali'jah expressed their regret in court for the roles they played in the deaths of Beth & Robin. Khari told the court: "Potter and Carre saw my potential, accepted my adversities and took me in. So that was me, in the home of Beth and Robin, with mental health issues, not communicating very well, smoking weed, disobeying rules and procrastinating way too much about my future because I was too frantically in love to care." Ali'jah expressed remorse as well, saying: "Thirty months later, I still don't know why this took place. I blame myself every night for not calling police." Although Miriam was never charged in connection with the death of her parents, an attorney for the estate of Potter and Carre have filed a petition requesting that Miriam be excluded from any inheritance contained in the deceased' wills. Beth & Robin are survived by their three children, Jonah, Ezra, and Miriam. https://preview.redd.it/tu5v49d1gaqa1.png?width=1322&format=png&auto=webp&s=3cee91cfbbd8c781be630da8dace017e533dedf0 Another photo of Beth Potter & Robin Carre If you've gotten this far...thank you for bearing with me, and I hope it was sorta worth your time. 2023.03.25 17:21 DeadHeart4 Funeral Director tried to use Jedi mind tricks on us, is probably selling chopped up body parts
My mother died in the hospital on St Patrick's Day. The whole experience was traumatic and horrifying and I'm going to dress up as Batman and prowl every medical malpractice law office in the state screaming about the man who killed my mother until I get some resolution. But what I really need to get off my chest is my experience with the funeral director.
I'm 38, my older half sister and brother are 58 and 61. I lived with my mother most of my adult life. She had a very minor disability. We didn't get along all the time, but I enjoyed her company and was always happy to live with her.
My siblings have always lived their own lives and live out of state. When she was in the hospital, they both took time off to visit for a few days, but towards the end, it was me and her on our own. She passed, and they insisted on taking care of the funeral. I was very grateful. I'm a teacher... so I make a living wage, but... not as much as they do. Although I still think the honorable thing to do would be to pay them back with her small life insurance payout! They keep declining.
My sister found a local mortuary with good reviews. Within hours of her death, I was told arrangements had been made. The hospital had packed my mothers things and literally escorted me out of the ICU room. I spent the evening plotting revenge, crying, and being harassed by donor alliance.
Donor alliance called within an hour of her death and asked if they could take her skin. She was 80 years old. And her skin was trash. We have a body farm in town. I thought it would upset my brother if I agreed. I said no, she talked over me, insisting they were a non-profit organization, I said no again. She talked over me, saying my mother was on the donor list and it's what she would have wanted. I said no again, she talked over me and said that donation saves lives. My friend grabbed the phone and told them we were not interested in donation. She talked over my friend and said skin graphs could help burn patients. I said no two more times and hung up.
My sister flew out on Tuesday and we met with the funeral director. She said she found a place that does Direct Cremation for $747. I was suspicious - my sister didn't know that our county literally just had a whole fiasco where a different mortuary was sued into oblivion for selling chopped up body parts and giving people fake ashes - but I'm of the mind that the body isn't important after the soul moves on.
We go to the funeral home and spend 2.5 hours talking to the Funeral Director. He is a rambling old man who interrupts and talks over people. During the time we were there, he told us about his own health problems - from an early heart attack to some broken bones, he told us about all the restaurants in town he knew the owner of, stories about his granddaughter - he really just did not want to get down to business.
This is important later, because the crux of his argument becomes: "I spent so much time comforting you, isn't that worth money!?"
Finally, he asked for my sister's credit card and headed downstairs to take care of the bill. I assumed they had everything worked out over the phone earlier. My sister noticed a hung certificate on the wall that had a different funeral service name and commented on it out loud. We were quietly chatting about that when he returned.
He returned and immediately said, "That's my OTHER funeral home. Yup, I have two. This is the cheaper option, in fact, I gave you a bunch of this home's discounts." Wink, wink.
He had run my sisters card and gave her a two page sheet of hand written expenses. It amounted to $2,100. He quickly, and confusedly, explained what some of the costs were: $250 for after hour pick up, $335 or $85 (he wasn't clear) on a credit card processing fee. Direct cremation, around $1,400. My eyes bulged out, because that's not what I was expecting, but I didn't want know if that was what my sister agreed to or not. So I stayed quiet.
That was when he informed us that he did not own a crematorium. That his 'trusted' friend who goes to Denver all the time to help with this was going to take her to a crematorium in Denver and then bring her back.
Ghoulish images of my mother sitting in the back of someone's truck, surrounded by Mcdonalds ice bags and twelve packs of cold beer danced in my head.
When we got home, my sister began to examine the bill.
Over the course of the next few days, he would call us incessantly. The bill had been paid, but he needed to approval of some things... like getting my brother to sign the cremation certificate or getting the correct spelling of a name, sometimes he'd just call us wanting to know if we had checked her obituary on their website and checked out the memory book they were selling. Have I looked at the website yet? How about now? Have I looked at it yet? Just calling to see if I've seen her obituary yet, they chose Danny Boy to play on a midi loop in the background! Long, rambling conversations. He became convinced that I was 'uncomfortable' handling the ashes, and wanted to check multiple times that it would be okay for me to pick them up... or he could express mail them to my sister. For a fee, no doubt.
I began to do research. I learned that funeral homes are required by the FTC to disclose all expenses during the arrangement meeting. It's called the Funeral Rule. No such disclosure had been made with my sister, she was just told she could do the $747 package.
I learned that it was illegal in our state to charge a credit card processing fee (but they could offer a cash discount and bake the processing fee into other things).
What the hell was this random $335 fee coming from? And why was the direct cremation quoted at 1,400-something. That was the price for his other funeral home, I figured out.
He told me that Donor Alliance wouldn't release the body until 11:30pm, and that's why we got charged an afterhours fee. Because the hospital told him he "had" to pick it up. (Or else?) But I found out our hospital will hold a body for up to 48 hours for the family to make arrangements.
The reviews for his place were fine. Four stars. You had to REALLY dig to find the bad ones. But... if you checked his OTHER funeral home... that's where I found everything. "Fraud," "He fucked up the death certificate 3 times," "the hurst ran a red light and got in a fender bender with my dad in the back," "ships bodies to Denver."
My sister was horrified. Imagine a whole week of grieving with your mom's daughter occasionally going, "You must think I'm a moron, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry, I should have known."
I told her she couldn't have known. The reviews were good. How often did one person single handedly arrange a funeral? His website looks legit. There's a whole slew of online articles warning about things like this happening because it happens so often. It wasn't her fault.
He called us a few days ago to let us know our mom was in transport and would arrive at the crematorium in 15-20 minutes. I was journaling EVERYTHING. I asked him what the name was of the place she was being sent.
"Well, she isn't there yet. She'll be there in 15-20 minutes."
He was trying to Jedi mind trick me. These are not the droids you're looking for. "I asked WHAT IS THE NAME of the crematorium she's been sent to."
"It's called Encore, but you aren't allowed to call them. You only talk to ME." He insisted. "You can ONLY talk to me. I am your point of contact. You can't contact them."
I was convinced his friend was parked outside someone's funeral home, waiting for the lights to go out, so he could slither in and dump 12 bodies into their incinerator.
My sister sent an e-mail with a screenshot of the package she purchased and a request for an itemized list.
For once, he did not call us right away. We called him the next day, but he said he was at lunch and would call us back. He called us around 6:00 that night.
My sister talked for a bit, but he rolled over her, so I grabbed the phone. I told him that we needed an itemized list of the expenses, as required by FTC law. He said they never discussed a exact amount. I told him my sister got the "Direct Cremation, Urn, and Cremation Service - COMPLETE" package for $747.
He told me that that package was a deal meant for veterans, and I must have read the website wrong.
I went to the website. All of his prices and funeral packages had been erased. The page was blank.
Luckily, we had the screenshot from earlier. And I used the wayback machine to capture a cache image of that page stating exactly what I was talking about. There were no veteran discounts offered on his site.
I told him that he couldn't charge us a credit card processing fee. It was illegal in our state. He said he'd wave it, but wanted me to admit that he spent almost 3 hours talking to us, and wasn't his time worth money? Every time I tried to talk, he'd shout over me that WASN'T HIS TIME WORTH MONEY? He had to pay his employees! That's just how business worked, he had to pay his employees! Hadn't he treated us with respect? I was going to give him a heart attack, did I want to be responsible for giving him a heart attack?
I told him I didn't know that him ranting about his favorite local Mexican restaurant was part of his billable hours.
I had to start raising my voice: let me speak. Stop interrupting me. When do I get to speak? LET ME SPEAK.
He'd counter with: DID I NOT TREAT YOUR FAMILY WITH RESPECT, YES OR NO. YES. OR NO.
Then I told him I was going to report him to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and The Funeral Consumers Alliance and my state Attorney General if he did not give us an itemized list of expenses. Or I tried to, he was shouting over me that he was a human being and that he had to pay his employees a fair wage, and did I know what the definition of 'over time' was?
My sister and I had agreed to pay for the $747 package, the $250 after hour fee, and the cost of the death certificates. I prepared to make that offer if he continued to interrupt me and NOT give us an itemized list.
After screaming at us for 47 minutes - we're a one party state, so I was recording the conversation on my laptop - he said, "I'll tell you what. Because I'm such a good person, I'll refund you half of the bill." I did the math, repeated the date several times for my recording, and agreed. Half of the bill was the amount I was going to counter with.
The next day was dealing with him calling every 15 minutes, deciding if he was going to pay us back with certified funds (OH BOY) or do a refund and get cash (my sister was from out of State, she didn't have cash), or... every convoluted thing he could think of that wasn't just refunding her credit card. I insisted my sister call her credit card and let them know what was happening, but she didn't want to.
He asked that, since he was losing money here, if my brother would mind picking up her ashes in Denver. Visions of my incredibly distraught brother having to meet some shady in a Walmart parking lot like a bad Craig's list sale danced through my head.
I recorded this session too. It was in person. He mentioned that it would take several days to get the ashes back to our town. That "I knew how tricky they were." I asked for clarification. Did he mean Encore Crematorium, the state capital funeral home that I wasn't allowed to call? No, he said, "Donor Alliance."
Was the "trust worthy" friend who shipped her body from Donor Alliance? Then I remembered Sunset Mesa Mortuary. Another local funeral home, you might have seen it on the news. They chopped up body parts, sold them on the "body market," and gave families fake ashes. They went through a fake company called "Donor Alliance, Inc."
Was this guy the new body dealer?
For fucks sake, I'm going to get to the bottom of this. I'm looking forward to getting dirt and sand with my mother's name on it in an urn.

2023.03.24 19:03 DeadHeart4 The funeral director is a huckster.
Although I still think the honorable thing to do would be to pay them back with her small life insurance payout.
My brother is much more... sensitive about all of this stuff. Which is why I'm here, because I need to get this off my chest, but I don't want him to find out about the whole ordeal.
Finally, he asked for my sister's credit card and headed downstairs to take care of the bill. I assumed they had everything worked out. I wasn't privy to any of the arrangements. My sister noticed a hung certificate on the wall that had a different funeral service name and commented on it outloud.
My eyes bulged out, because that's not what I was expecting, but I didn't want know if that was what my sister agreed to or not. So I stayed quiet.
That was when he informed us that he did not own a crematorium. That his 'trusted' friend who goes to [The State Capital] all the time to help with this was going to take her to a crematorium in [State Capital] and then bring her back.
Ghoulish images of my mother sitting in the back of someone's truck, surrounded by Mcdonalds ice bags and twelve packs of cold beer danced in my head.
When we got home, my sister began to examine the bill.
Over the course of the next few days, he would call us incessantly. The bill had been paid, but he needed to approve of some things... like getting my brother to sign the cremation certificate, sometimes he'd just call us wanting to know if we had checked her obituary on their website and checked out the memory book they were selling of her.
No such diclosure had been made with my sister, she was just told she could do the $747 package.

2023.03.23 14:01 Schwyzerorgeli Researcher looking for some Milwaukee help
Hi Milwaukee, I live in New Glarus. I'm doing research on a man named Robie Schneider, who was our lead yodeler back in the 60s. I've tracked down a newspaper article about him from the Journal Sentinel in September of 1968, but I don't have access to it. The archives of the newspaper are available online via the Milwaukee Library website, but only if you have a Milwaukee library card.
Would any of you with a Milwaukee library card be willing to help me find this article? It would be very much appreciated, and you'd have a friend in New Glarus!
