Running for office is a major undertaking, and like any great journey, the first step is often the hardest. Our goal at VoteDem is to lower that barrier by developing a campaigning tool we can freely offer as a service to Democrats across the country. Campaign Central is a web-based platform that can load voter registration data, organize phone banking, text banking, canvassing, and much more! But to run this project, we need your help. We need volunteers to collect and upload voter registration data once per month (instructions provided).

| As always, there will be some new movies coming to Netflix in June, and some videos leaving as well. Here's a list of the top seven new movies to watch, maybe some movies will be your favorites. https://preview.redd.it/5k9elm6n7d3b1.jpg?width=3132&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=996110a4349892d7c92c93cf05ca4159b38f328f A Beautiful Life Available on: June 1 Director: Mehdi Avaz Netflix is kicking off June 2023 with A Beautiful Life, a feel-good story about a fisherman who dreams of becoming a singer. It’s a classic rags-to-riches story that doubles as a romance since the wannabe singer will get entangled with the music producer helping him reach stardom. You Do You Available on: June 9 Director: Cemal Alpan Tapping on the anti-work concerns of Gen Z, You Do You is a new comedy about a young woman who has to quit her bohemian life and find a blue-collar job after being evicted from her building. But, of course, working from nine to five is not anyone’s dream, so when faced with the hardships of life, Merve (Ahsen Eroğlu) will also come up with a backup plan: create a revolutionary dating app where people meet in masks before deciding to take their relationship to the next level. The Turkish-language movie looks like the perfect story to laugh about the everyday struggles of work while also remembering there’s more to life than shifts. Extraction 2 Available on: June 16 Director: Sam Hargrave In 2020, Extraction had the biggest premiere in Netflix's history. So, of course, the streamer was quick to announce a sequel bringing Chris Hemsworth back to fight bad guys, blow things up, and maybe beat down some children. In the sequel, Hemsworth’s black ops mercenary is tasked with another deadly mission, this time rescuing the family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison. Through My Window: Across the Sea Available on: June 23 Director: Marçal Forés Through My Window: Across the Sea is the sequel to 2022’s hit Spanish erotic romance Through My Window, based on the novel of the same name by Ariana Godoy. The first movie followed Julio Peña as Ares and Clara Galle as Raquel as the couple bonded thanks to a pirated Wi-Fi connection, starting an intense romance. Now, in the sequel, Ares and Raquel will face new challenges after being forced to keep a long-distance relationship that threatens to split them apart. The sequel promises to raise the temperature with steamy scenes, and with so much at stake, fans will surely be glad to re-encounter these characters. iNumber Number: Jozi Gold Available on: June 23 Director: Donovan Marsh Ten years after the iNumber Number thriller series introduced the world to the urban landscapes of South Africa, series creator Donovan Marsh is back to write and direct a movie sequel for Netflix. The movie brings back the cop duo Chili (S’dumo Mtshali) and Shoes (Presley Chweneyagae) as they fight against a powerful crime lord known as Hyena Man (Bongile Mantsai). Just like the original series, iNumber Number: Jozi Gold is expected to bring the action to classic locations of Johannesburg, the biggest city in South Africa. Run Rabbit Run Available on: June 28 Director: Daina Reid After many years stuck in development hell, Nimona is finally being released. Based on a graphic novel by ND Stevenson, Nimona tells the story of a young agent of chaos who allies with a former knight to dominate the world in a medieval setting. The titular character has shapeshifting abilities Stevenson used to explore gender-fluidity and transsexuality, which turned Nimona into an LGBTQ+ icon. That's why we were quite excited to learn Blue Sky Studios (The Ice Age, Rio) was developing an adaptation. 2023.06.01 09:49 Genprey Student File #47: Ako Amau's Really Bad, No Good Day
| So, uhh... I have a bit of explaining to do. First: this is not, infact, Miyako's section. However, unlike the previous Rabbit delay, Miyako's section is actually written. So what had happened was: the next JP story section was announced for the 7th of this month, which will continue the Rabbit Squad's story. Naturally, this means that there's likely to be more revealed about our Rabbit girls, and while the previous 3 members' respective analysis had been posted before the announcement, I'd like to hold onto Miyako's section incase there are developments in her character that are worth writing about. With that being said, let's go see what's bothering Ako. So You've Had a Bad Day? https://preview.redd.it/tuxk366ebc3b1.png?width=206&format=png&auto=webp&s=a97404dca17628269a7ab118bec7841d7e95eef4 There's a lot to unpack about Ako here, and although it tempts me to do so, I will try my best to make any cow jokes...even if certain aspects of her design may call for it. Ahem Upon first meeting her, Ako comes off as, for a lack of better words, overbearing, and for a good part of her bond story, she really lays a lot of her issues onto Sensei, at times becoming frustrated enough to link him with her daily troubles. Overall, Ako really gives the impression that everything is out to get her. Beginning with Appearances, I'd actually like to start with Ako's main color scheme consisting of various blues. This is something that would easily be overlooked, but I believe it's a strategic choice in color given Ako's main character trait. The name, 'Amau', can be interpreted as a rainy/gloomy season, which, of course, is associated with the color blue so often that we often associate 'the blues' with troubles. Next is a less obvious visual detail: https://preview.redd.it/orh73iivcc3b1.png?width=350&format=png&auto=webp&s=cb687eb627b4ce10c393703a44b7a9bbf21c6a40 This is Ako's halo, which has a very distinct design that, honestly, took awhile for me to even get a clue as to what it's supposed to represent. At first, I saw it as an eye, which would make sense for the Abydos girls, less so for Ako and the Prefects. After looking at it closely, I made out a crescent moon and remembered something my uncle's fishermen buddies had always told me while I was just a tyke: "Never stick your finger [towards] a [crescent] moon [if you can] still see the round part. It'll give you bad luck all the way until you get old." As you can guess from me having to insert a lot of context, five-year-old me was not very good at paying attention, but that little saying managed to stick with me. Looking it up, it appears to be a superstition from sailors, who associated such a view with oncoming storms. Visually, said moon would look a bit like this: https://preview.redd.it/lkiuvbr8ec3b1.jpg?width=650&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c22fb3ac23c8808b0c67b2a65081f76442681609 It's not 1:1 with how Ako's halo looks, but it does seem to be a crescent moon encompassing the 'disc', with the former being far more pronounced than the latter. With that in mind, the outermost part of Ako's halo could be a pointer or compass, which would lend itself to the superstition. Admittedly, this is a really weird reference that I'm not even sure is very well known, much less in other regions. But, at the very least, I think it's an interesting guess to bring up here that's somewhat fitting of Ako's main theme. Still, grain of salt. If that is somehow what's being referenced, it would fit along with Ako being superstitious/paranoid that everyone/thing has decided to bring her misfortune. As a sidenote, the 'crescent' part of her halo has a notable fracture, similar to what would be caused by stress. Plus, if we were looking at a certain Mother Goose story about fiddles, a moon, and co- *Cough* All of this points to Ako's main personality: a girl who is stressed out to the point of becoming superstitious. While, yes, it's crazy to see Ako take things like a regular power surge as a terrorist attack specifically targeted at her, it's really hard to blame Ako when Makoto repeatedly makes unreasonable demands, sends trash to the Prefect mailbox, sticks nails in Ako's slippers, and sends over her subordinates for 'inspection', along with having to stay up all night fixing Iori's messes. To top that off, Ako has really poor stress-management skills, a point that Sensei brought up, leading to Ako mistaking her having someone (Sensei) to vent to about her stress with becoming more stressed out. Combine that with Ako's natural pride, and we get this little treat: https://i.redd.it/41j5czp0pc3b1.gif That is a scene that is most likely a good number of your guys' home screen. Aside from being a humbling punishment game, Ako's experience with a leash managed to cool her down, as she would...mostly apologize to Sensei for getting a bit out-of-control and become more reasonable. Overall, Ako simply needs someone to talk to, given Hina is too busy (and not somebody Ako would like to burden, anyways), Iori probably isn't exactly the best girl to have lend an ear to Ako, and Chinatsu is usually off fulfilling her own responsibilities. As a result, we can assume Ako is often left alone as her stress builds up. It may seem like Ako is antagonistic towards Sensei, but really, she simply uses him for stress relief without realizing it/that she needed someone to vent to. This is evidence by the fact that Ako remarks that she 'feels a lot better after talking to Sensei' and even worries about his own stress/work management. In that regard, the two have a unique relationship that can be likened to two overworked employees. Moving onto Ako's other physical characterstics, she wears a cowbe-...err, on her left wrist is what appears to be a cuff/chain that are used on dairy farm ani-...the rings on her shoes.... Okay, no matter how much I try to avoid the reference, Ako has some similar qualities as a cow. Why that is I cannot pinpoint, but hilarious or tragic enough (depending on your PoV), cows are often stressed out by the chiming of a cowbell around their neck, to the point where they may experience fatigue or develop behavioral issues. Taking a look at the buckles of Ako's shoes, they have a similar appearance as the nose rings given given to bulls and cows. For adults, the purpose is to control their behavior, especially given that bulls are notoriously unpredictable and can get rather angry on a dime. For the young, it discourages teething so that farmers may give mothers a bit of a break or get them started on eating other meals. It probably doesn't need to be said, but being bound by chains is also not something cows (or anyone outside unique individuals) really enjoy. I don't believe Ako is a direct reference to a cow, especially given her race isn't based on any animal, however, she does wear accessories that would cause irritation, which is tragic, given how much stress she receives already. And, yes, I know what most of you are probably thinking about. Stop that, you degenerates. Hina Adoration https://preview.redd.it/j4lhivhtsc3b1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=58c5aeb7a61635825daffc1ec04580d0859201cf Ako's final trait is her adoration for Hina. On one hand, this is mostly founded on respect, as Ako praises Hina as a perfect/hardwoker and aspires to follow in her footsteps. On the other hand...Ako gets a bit more obsessive. In comedic situations, it's noted that being referred to as 'Hina's dog' doesn't bother Ako, nor does she make any attempt to deny such accusations. As shown in the official comic and in the Summer PV, Ako goes full degenerate when presented with the idea of having Hina try on new swimsuits. For serious moments, Ako goes full manic when Hina is missing or otherwise in danger, being ready to burn down Trinity after Arius's attack and doing everything she can to allow Hina some rest over the summer (at the cost of her own/the other Prefects' well-being). To add to all this, there's the text on Ako's Unique Weapon: It is an important item that was handed to Ako when she was appointed as an administrative officer after a lot of painstaking efforts. She carries it with her all the time and takes very good care of it. From that flavor text, we learned that Ako had apparently worked her bottom off to earn her position as Hina's secretary and, upon given her gun, she treats it with the utmost care and, despite being in a supportive role/not usually requiring it, carries it around everywhere she goes. Hell, even during Ako's bit of shame as she has been leashed, her gun rests safely on her back. Put simply, Ako has a similar level of respect for Hina that Haruka has for Aru, except in the case of the latter, we know Haruka to be drawn to Aru as her very first friend during a time where she was repeatedly bullied. Ako's feelings towards Hina have yet to be given an origin point, and as far as we can tell, she simply views Hina as a really good rolemodel. Whether or not there's more to things than that isn't yet known, but it'd be interesting to see what Ako was like before joining the Prefects. Ako vs. Kayoko Before closing, there has been an interesting interaction that was shown early on in the first arc of the main story. That is: Ako's relationship with Kayo. Kayo, as many of you know, is a really laid-back girl who has a scary appearance, but never bothers anyone. Throughout Aru's antics, Kayo simply rolls with the punches, offering a bit of reason, but ultimately letting her friend go along with her wild plans. Kayo is, overall, of little words and never seems to get too agitated... Well, except: https://preview.redd.it/253sr0zqzc3b1.jpg?width=1785&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dbd1be2f6088233894e8c58a1e7f451de187a010 After waking up from having been KO'd, Kayoko would respond to Ako in a...not very friendly way. Earlier in the scene, it was revealed through Mutsuki that every other member of the Problem Solvers did not recognize the Prefects, implying that they had never had a direct run-in with them previously. Given Kayo referred to Ako by her (full) name and recognized that such a reckless raid was something that Ako would do (and not Hina), we can assume that the two had been previously acquainted on less-than-positive terms. On Ako's end, she was, or at least presented herself as being, less aggressive towards Kayo, but made a statement implying that she knew a lot about Kayo. All-in-all, the exchange was very personal, although as of now, we haven't had anything else elaborate on how/when the two were originally acquainted. This would be an interesting development that we'll hopefully be able to see in a (being hopeful here) Problem Solver origin story. As mentioned earlier in this post, I want to sit on Miyako's section until after the latest Rabbit chapter, which may be a bit of time. Given that, the next analysis will focus on our beautiful, genius hacker, Himari, followed up by her friend partner and highly practical Eimi. submitted by Genprey to BlueArchive [link] [comments] |
2023.06.01 09:15 buninthesun "Spring" Fever
I'm a bit worried about my boys. They have been bonded for a few years, and they are both neutered. Since around February, my younger boy Cricket has been very assertive with his mate Jasper, chasing him around, mounting, marking, etc. This behavior is very unusual, as they used to spend all day grooming each other. I was informed (via this subreddit) that it was probably due to the seasons changing, as spring is a hormonal time for rabbits. But it's been almost 4 months and the behavior has continued. I've been having to re-litter train, and monitor them most of the time. Jasper has not fought back, he just runs. He is definitely the submissive rabbit. But Cricket will just not calm down! Should I separate them? Should I just let it be and stop worrying? Is there anything else I can do? Seeing them "fight" hurts my heart. Thanks for reading my post.
Edit: also - the chasing is usually followed by grooming a while afterwards..sometimes they're completely fine for hours. This is the main reason I'm afraid to separate them.

2023.06.01 06:49 Robakix92x First story Written and was hoping for some feedback.
I'm in the first draft stage and am having some difficulty getting some beta readers so I'm hoping for some input on just the first chapter. I know there's a lot of editing I'm gonna have to do so be as brutal as you can/ want, just as long as it's helpful criticism towards developing my writing style.
Alice Eye
Chapter One- Alone In The Rain
"Don't get in the way of humanity's future!"
A clash of swords race across a barren wasteland–
"Please! Let me save you!"
–Where two women face each other one last time.
"I can't be saved anymore! This is the only way! I won't let you stop me!"
One who has suffered and wants to belong.
"And I won't let you destroy yourself!"
And the other, who wished to heal a friend in need.
"I'm already lost!"
Unable to move forward as the darkness grows–
"As long as I'm still me, I won't stop trying to save you!"
–Yet a brilliant light burned, ready to stand beside it. It all began–
Two Years Ago….
BOOM! Thunder roared across the land as the light casts its shadow over one city; a city where the word impossible doesn't exist.
"It's been eight years since that day. The day the world became trapped in this endless rain and the day where a chain of unexplained deaths took place in our once, beautiful city. The police have no leads, scientific groups haven't discovered the cause behind the storm, and now, conspiracy theories and myths are rising."
September 1992, the eighth year where the sun's rays no longer reached off the coast of England; the Royal Quartet City.
"While the citizens have gotten used to the downpour, stranger things have been happening lately within the Dream District. A woman in a black cloak has been seen in children's rooms at midnight. Teen girls have been murdered with no signs of struggles. And recently, more sightings of odd, unexplainable creatures have been seen randomly throughout the area. Lastly, several witnesses have claimed to have seen the sun near a high-rise building. This is Wild Heart News, reporting in…"
CLICK.
"That's enough of that. I better get going. Second period is almost over."
Highschool student, Iris Blackheart, is getting herself ready for another rainy day as she finishes her breakfast and daily news. She looked in her dresser for some clothing and grabbed whatever was left; she smelled the clothes she grabbed "Wow these smell bad. I need to get some more clothes."
As she got dressed, she looked around her room, piled up dirty dishes, worn clothing all over the floor, and garbage bags along a wall.
"..... I'll get to it eventually." She sarcastically claimed as she walked towards the front door. She grabbed a purple zipper hoodie, an umbrella, and a small, silver bracelet with a heart shaped diamond embedded in the center. As she placed it on her wrist, her eyes became entranced as she thought of the day she first acquired it.
I can't believe it's been eight years since I got this thing! It's funny. It was also the last day the sun was out.
Iris looked at the clock as its arms moved and questioned what she was even leaving for. She knew she had school, but no one was there to make her go or tell her why she should go; she just felt she had to go. Looking around her room once more, Iris saw all the things that needed to be done, and wasn't up for doing it. She slapped her cheeks, rolled her head and shoulders as she loosened up, and left her apartment to go to school. She opened her umbrella as she took in the sight; the Dream district, one of the city's four major boroughs.
"Hurry up or we'll be in even more trouble!"
Iris quickly turned her head over to the hasty voice; her heart raced with excitement as the voice called to her.
Is someone really calling me?
Her gaze shot over to two adults. One was in a car telling the other to get in as he struggled to close his umbrella. The two drove off once he closed it as Iris stood there watching.
I should have known better. She let out a long sigh as she shut her front door. Iris looked at her umbrella and just threw it away, choosing to let the rain wash away the emotions she felt as she dragged herself towards her school.
Why is it always like this…
She passed by other adults running late to work, traffic workers trying their best to work in the rain, police constantly on the move to give the city a sense of security, even elders sitting by watching the sky; not one person paid her any mind as she walked. She tilted her head towards the cloudy sky as the downpour continued and muttered–
"I really wish this rain– would just wash me away already."
This city, which has long been waiting for release from the storm, lies two girls bound by fate.
SLAM!
"What was that? Who's there!"
"It's probably the rumored ghost again!"
"I thought it was only in the bathrooms!"
"Wasn't it supposed to be shaking the hallways?!"
"Forget this! I'm getting out of here!"
Several students were on their way to their next class but ran the moment Iris opened the front door of the school building.
Sigh… There they go again.
A teacher tried to calm the students down as they ran, however Iris stood in front of him.
"How about you help the student in front of you asshole?" She demanded, staring into his eyes, hoping he would scold her.
Please…
"Seriously kids, knock it off, stop running, and head right to class before you all get detention!"
The teacher chased after the other students leaving Iris behind in a now empty hallway. She dropped her bag, took a deep breath and screamed–
"STOP TREATING ME LIKE I DON'T EXIST!"
She waited for a moment to see if anyone, be it a teacher, a student, or even an animal would approach her to say or do anything to her; anything to be noticed.
RING!
The late bell went off and no one approached her.
"Whatever." She took off her sweater and started squeezing the water out onto the floor. She looked at the clock on the wall, "It's only the fourth period. Think I'll use their showers and dry off."
Why did I show up again? It's not like I'm learning anything here. Iris entered one of the school's shower rooms and changed out of her wet clothes when something caught her attention from the window.
"Is… is that– light?"
Across from Iris's school on a tall building, a golden light emanated.
"Is the sun really shining again?"
As she reached her hand out towards the light, it vanished. Did I imagine that just now?
She took one more glance around the area, but found no such light again. Unable to assert whether or not what she saw was real or not, Iris continued getting undressed, entered the shower and leaned against the wall as each droplet of hot water loosened the stress on her body.
I should enjoy this for a bit before the other girls arrive.
After thirty minutes passed, the doors opened and other girls started walking in to change as the current class ended.
"Why is the shower water on?" And here we go again.
"Don't tell me the ghost is in here now too."
"Maybe it was just a fluke! Let's just quickly shower and get out."
"I agree."
Iris walked out as the girls walked in. She dried herself off and went towards the lockers and saw a black and gold v neck shirt, short black ripped pants, and mix matched socks.
"Can I switch clothes with one of you? Mine smells a bit and they're wet." The girls continued to shower without saying anything to her. "I'll take that as a yes."
A little tight around my chest, but it'll do. She got dressed in the other girl's clothing, placed her wet clothes in the locker, leaned on a wall, waiting for them to get out and see if they noticed her. Now let's see if anyone cares.
The shower water turned off and the girls hastily walked over to the lockers.
"Huh… where are my clothes? Whose are these for? Ugh, they reek!"
"That stupid ghost steals clothing now!"
"Nowhere is safe in the school!"
Ugh, drama queens. Iris rolled her eyes, grabbed her bag, and walked out of the shower room causing them further confusion.
How much longer do they plan to keep this bullying up? Iris thought as she picked up her bag and walked the hallways of her school. For as long as she could recall, everyone in the city has treated her like she doesn't exist; no one acknowledged her presence. She couldn't grasp why anyone would treat her like she wasn't there and continued to ponder this as she arrived at her class. Before she walked inside, she took a deep breath, slapped her cheeks, and prepared herself for the bullies of her classroom. She opened the door so fast that a gust of air passed through the classroom.
"Not again!"
"Why is our classroom haunted?!"
"Is this going to happen for the rest of the year?!"
Yeah, yeah, shut up. Iris ignored their panic, quietly walking over to her desk and sat there waiting patiently to leave. The students were alarmed and panicked as the teacher made an attempt to settle them down. It was difficult to calm any of the students down as there were reports of teenagers being murdered by some invisible force; superstitions were rising as the victims increased. The teacher advised everyone to speak to each other for the remainder of the class and help calm one another down as tensions rose. Iris watched the class comfort one another and felt her chest tightened as her frustration over being ignored grew.
"Would anyone even care if I stopped coming? Even the teachers don't seem to care about me." Iris muttered to herself as her only form of communication.
"Sigh… you know what. I don't even know why I show up?!" Iris got up, threw her chair on the floor spooking the class even further and walked out. "Stupid classmates! Stupid teachers! Stupid school!" She kicked lockers, and yelled outside the classes, but nothing.
"Ugh… What do I have to do to get some attention around here?!"
"Shut up you whiny bitch!"
Iris heard a voice and immediately looked around to see who it was. Everyone was in a classroom, so who was it? Who acknowledged her?
"Where did that voice come from? Did someone hear me just now?" She searched the school looking everywhere she could think of; the gym, the lunchroom, the teacher's lounge, anywhere she could think of.
"Where? Where? Where?! Where?! WHERE?!" Soon her curiosity turned into desperation as she ran throughout every corner of the school. She wasn't sure if she was just hearing things or not, but all she knew was that she was tired of being alone for so long.
Whoever that was they have to be here somewhere. I—
RING!
Unfortunately, the final bell for school rang and just about everyone was leaving to go home. Tired from running around the school, she stopped and sat down against the wall of the hallways to catch her breath before trying again.
"So what should we try at the Cafe this time?" Iris looked up to other students chatting thinking it was directed at her.
"There's a new item on the menu that I want to try that is apparently to die for!"
"Oh, what's it called I want to try……."
Iris faced the ground as she held herself, sitting in her isolation. No one to hang out with. No one to comfort her. No one to ask her if she's okay. She tried her hardest to keep tears from flowing out of her eyes as she struggled to keep herself from breaking down.
Why? Why won't anyone see me? Why won't– anyone acknowledge me?
BANG! One of the students suddenly fell onto the ground as she struggled for air causing the students to panic; however…
Are you serious?! Iris trembled as she wiped the tears from her eyes to see if she was seeing things; she wasn't. What is that?!
Over the student was a skinny humanoid creature that wore a tattered cloak and seemed to have multiple hands wrapped around parts of its body. It had one of its hands inside the girl's mouth as it attempted to pull something out of her.
What the hell is it doing?! And why is no one reacting to it? Her heart began to beat faster than her trembling as she looked on in horror. The class started screaming in fear as the student began to cough up blood.
I need to get out of here!
Iris felt her whole body become as light as a feather as she immediately stood up in an attempt to run; the creature instantly turned to her. Iris completely froze in both mind and body. She was so afraid that she even stopped breathing as if anything would set it off. The creature walked towards her pulling something out of the student causing her death. As the class yelled in fear and agony, Iris stood there unable to move as her skin froze up in the presence of the creature slowly approaching her. Something finally acknowledged her existence, and she was far too afraid to even think of why it was happening now.
"Found you!"
Iris and the creature turned towards the voice and saw an oddly dressed rabbit. The creature immediately fled from the rabbit giving Iris a chance to reclaim herself. She fell to the ground struggling to breathe as if someone was strangling her.
(HUFF, HUFF, HUFF!) What the hell was that?! And why is no one reacting to this?! As she's gasping for air, Iris sees the rabbit leave after the creature and tries to follow it. She got up and attempted to follow, however she caught a glimpse of the student dead on the floor with her eyes pointed at her as if she could see her.
Don't, don't look at me as if you could finally see me. A tear ran down Iris's face for her fallen classmate. Whether it was because she was sad that she was possibly acknowledged after someone died or if she wished it was her that died to escape her isolation, she didn't know. All she knew was that something was out there that only she could see and that meant there could be a way to make people see her again is what she thought no matter how unreasonable a thought it may be. She ran looking for the two creatures and heard a loud sound coming from the nearby restroom.
Okay. I'm close. Need to calm myself before I see, whatever that thing was.
Iris stopped moving, closed her eyes for a moment, placed her hand on her bracelet, and headed over to investigate. She stopped again.
This is stupid. No matter how I look at it, this is stupid. What am I hoping to find?
Iris stood for a moment, listening to nearby sirens approaching the school.
After what I saw, stopping now would be crazy right?
She carried on and reached the area where the sound was loudest; the boy's bathroom. Iris stood there for a moment, embarrassed by the idea of entering a room for the opposite gender.
Okay, so I might be curious, but not that curious. It's the boy's bathroom, what if one of them is peeing or…
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Multiple loud sounds came from the room again and again. Do I go in? Or do I turn around and pretend I saw nothing? Iris paced back and forth contemplating what choice to make.
"Screw it! If it were a boy in the same situation he'd go into the girl's bathroom without second guessing it! I'm doing this for gender equality!" She yelled, hardening her resolve as she nervously walked in and saw something unbelievable; a black hole lodged into the ground.
I… I must be dreaming. This can't be real. Can it?
Iris was unable to determine the thing in front of her. And yet, she felt drawn to it as if something called to her. Before she could even attempt to comprehend what was happening, she was already through the hole. She felt her body was changing, becoming, something… free. Free of all her worries. Free of isolation. Free of reality. Her vision went dark and then, like magic, she was standing somewhere far away from her school. In front of her were several abandoned, run-down apartment complexes ranging from roughly six to twelve stories tall floating on rocks and connected by train tracks.
This place looks like it's been abandoned for decades. Even the ground looks like it's been through an earthquake or two….. Somehow, this place seems familiar…
She looked at her hand and saw the rain water slip right through her as if she were a ghost.
So— this really doesn't help with my "I don't exist" anxiety. Where am I? Iris started walking towards the nearest apartment building when she suddenly heard a voice.
"How the fuck did this slut get here?!"
Iris was completely thrown off by the random words thrown in her direction and immediately sought the voice.
Where is that voice? I've heard that voice before. Iris looked and saw the oddly dressed rabbit from before. Iris grabbed the rabbit who didn't even bother to try to escape and immediately inspected it from head to toe.
"Is there like a radio or voice box attached to this thing?" She said curiously. Iris looked it in the eyes, "No way was this cute little thing the source of the voice! It's a bunny!"
SLAM!
Iris was flipped onto the ground with zero time to react. She was completely dumbfounded and tried to get the words to comprehend what happened until the rabbit got on top of her.
"Touch me like that again with your slutty hands and I will bury you like my liquor on a Saturday morning." The rabbit commanded.
Iris couldn't process or find logic in what was happening. Where was she? Why is there a talking rabbit? Why is it a bitch? Iris had too many questions on her mind.
CRACK!
Iris heard a building crack and quickly looked to see an abandoned apartment complex breaking down in front of her. She saw the cracks intensify and saw the creature from earlier get blown out of the building. She quickly moved away to avoid the creature.
"What is that thing?!" Iris asked, but the rabbit quickly ran towards the building as a person began to walk out of it. Golden light emanated from the building and only grew brighter.
What's happening?
Iris tried to look as best as she could until someone came into clear view. A petite, teen girl in a dark blue jacket with glowing golden long hair had Iris in awe of her unique appearance. She pulled out a red curved sword with a rose shaped handle on it and a clock embedded in the center of the rose.
"Abby– Clock in."
The rabbit was drawn into the clock as the needle turned and a strong golden light glowed from the sword. She took a stance, readying her blade, and prepared to battle the creature. It removed its cloak, unleashed its other four arms that were surrounding its body, and lounged at the girl. The girl is pushed back into the building as their battle carries through the floors. Iris could hear the sounds of their attacks rise slowly getting quieter as she thought of whether she should follow them or not.
"I don't know what's happening, but I can't sit here and wait to see what happens. I walked through the weird hole, I'm going to see this through to the end!"
Iris ran into the building, ran up the stairs, and looked for the girl and the creature. As she got closer to the top, she stopped hearing any sort of loud sounds.
Is it, is it over? Iris felt concerned now that she was at the door to the rooftop. Who won? The girl or the creature? If the creature won, Iris would be her next target. But if the girl won, what happens next?
I– I can't stand here and wait for something to happen.
She grabbed the door handle with hands drenched in sweat and uncontrollable shaking of fear from the unknown; whatever happens next, nothing would be the same for her.

2023.06.01 05:42 Guilty_Chemistry9337 Hide Behind the Cypress Tree, pt. 2
They didn’t tell us the name of the next kid that disappeared. They didn’t tell us another kid had disappeared at all. We could all tell by the silence what had happened. It spoke volumes. I’m sure they talked about it in great detail amongst themselves. In PTA meetings and City Councils. My parents made sure to turn off the TV at 5 o’clock before the news came on, at least in my home. They’d turn it back on for the 11 o’clock news, when were were in bed and couldn’t hear the details.
The strange thing is, they never told us to just stop going outside. They told us to go in groups, sure, but they never decided, or as far as I could tell even though, to keep us all indoors. I guess that sort of freedom wasn’t something they were willing to give up. Instead, they did the neighborhood watch thing. For those few months, I remember my folks meeting more of our neighbors than in all the time previously, or since. Retirees would spend their days out in their front lawns, watching kids and everybody else coming and going. They’d even set up lawn furniture, with umbrellas, even all through the rains of spring. Cops stopped sitting in ambushes on the highways waiting for speeders and instead started patrolling the streets, chatting with us as we’d pass by. Weekends would see all the adults out in their yards, working on cars in the driveways, fixing the gutters, and so on. They had this weird way of looking at you as you’d ride by. Not hostile stares, but it was like they were cataloging your presence. Boy, eight years old, red raincoat silver bike, about 11:30 in the morning, heading south on Sorensen. Seemed fine.
The next time we saw it, it wasn’t in our neighborhood, and I was the one who saw it first. We were visiting Russ, a sort of 5th semi-friend from school. We rarely hung out, mostly owing to geography. His house wasn’t far as the crow flies, but it was up a steep hill. We spent a Saturday afternoon returning a cache of comic books we’d borrowed. The distance we covered was substantial, as we had decided to take lots of extra streets as switchbacks, rather than slowly push our bikes up the too-steep hills.
The descent was going to be the highlight of the trip, up until I saw the Hidebehind. We were on a curving road, a steep forested bluff on one side. The uphill slope was mostly ivy-covered raised foundations for the neighborhood’s houses. That side of the road was lined with parked cars, and the residents of the homes had to ascend steep staircases to get to their front doors.
I was ayt the back of the pack when I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. Movement, something brown squatting between two closely parked cars. My head snapped as I zoomed past, and despite not getting a good look, I knew it was that terrible thing. “It’s behind us!” I shouted and started pedaling hard. The others looked for themselves as I quickly rushed past them, but they soon joined my pace.
Ralph’s earlier idea of directly confronting the thing was set aside. We were moving too fast, and down too narrow a street to turn around. Then we saw it again it was to our left, off-road, between the trees. Suddenly it leaped from behind one tree trunk to the next and disappeared again. That hardly made sense, the base of the trees must have been thirty feet below the deck of the street we rode down. One of us, I think it was India, let out one of those strangled screams.
There it was again, back on the right, disappearing behind a mailbox as we approached. That couldn’t have been, it must have outpaced us and crossed in front of us. Logic would suggest there was more than one, but somehow the four of us knew it was the same thing. More impossible still, the pole holding up the mailbox was too thin, maybe two inches in diameter, yet that thing had disappeared behind it, like a Warner Bros. cartoon character. It was just enough to catch a better glimpse of it though. All brown. A head seemingly too bulbous and large for its body. Its limbs were thin but far longer, like a gibbon’s. Only a gibbon had normal elbows and knees. This thing bent its joints all wrong like it wasn’t part of the natural order. We were all terrified to wit’s end.
“The trail!” Ralph shouted, and the other three of us knew exactly what he meant. The top of it was only just around the curve. It was a dirt footpath for pedestrians ascending and descending South Hill, cutting through the woods on our left. It was too steep for cars, and to be honest, too steep for bikes. We’d played on it before, challenging each other to see how high up they could go, then descend back down without using our brakes. A short paved cul-de-sac at the bottom was enough space to stop before running into a cross street.
Ralph had held the previous group record, having climbed three-quarters of the way before starting his mad drop. India’s best was just short of that, I had only dared about halfway up, Ben only a third. This time, with certain death on our heels, the trail seemed the only way out. Nothing could have outrun a kid on a bike flying down that hill.
We followed Ralph’s lead, swinging to the right gutter of the street, then hanging a fast wide left up onto the curb, over a patch of gravel, between two boulders set up as bollards, lest a car driver mistake the entrance for a driveway, and then, like a roller coaster cresting the first hill, the bottom fell out.
It was the most overwhelming sensation of motion I’ve ever had, before or since. I suppose the danger behind us was the big reason, and being absolutely certain that only our speed was keeping us alive. I remember thinking it was like the speeder bike scene from Return of the Jedi, also a recent movie from the time. Only this was real. I didn’t just see the trees flashing past it, I could hear the motion as well. Cold air attacked my eyes and long streamers of tears rushed over my cheeks and the drops flew past my ears, I didn’t dare blink. Each little stone my tires struck threatened to up-end me and end it all. Yet, and perhaps worse, half the time it felt like I wasn’t in contact with the ground at all. I was going so fast that those same small stones were sending me an inch or two into the air, and the arc of the flights so closely matched the slope that by the time I contacted the trail again, I was significantly further down the hill.
At the same time, I had never felt more relief, as the thing behind us had no way of catching us now. Somehow, maybe the seriousness of the escape gave us both the motive and the seriousness to keep ourselves under control. Looking back, I marvel that at least one of us didn’t lose control and end up splitting our skulls open.
We hit the pavement of the cul-de-sac below, and didn’t bother to slow down. We raced through the cross-street, one angry driver screeching to a halt and laying on his horn. This brought out the neighborhood watch. Just a few of them at first. Still, we didn’t slow down, our momentum carried us back up the much shallower slope of our neighborhood. Witnesses saw us depart at high speed, and this only brought out more of the watch. We heard whistles behind us, just like our P.E. teacher’s whistle. We figured that was the watch’s alarm siren. Regardless of what happened to that thing, it was behind us. We returned to our homes, shaken, but safe and sound, our inertia taking us almost all of the way there.
Another kid disappeared that Sunday, up on South Hill. We’d suspected it because we could see the lights of the police cars on a high road, surrounding the spot where it would turn out later, one of the kid’s shoes had been found. Russ confirmed it at school on Monday. It was a kid he’d known, lived down the road from his place, went to private school which is why we didn’t recognize his name.
I remember seeing Ralph’s face the next day when he arrived at school. He looked angry. Strong. Like he’d been crying really hard, and now it was over and he was resolved. He said he’d felt guilty because the thing we’d escaped from had gotten the other kid instead. He tried to tell his old man about it, then his mom, then any adult he could. He’d tell them about the monster who hides behind things. They needed to focus on finding and stopping that instead of looking for some sort of creeper or serial killer. Of course, nobody had listened to him. They hadn’t listened to the rest of us either when we’d tried to tell.
So he’d devised a plan. He was calling it the “Fight Patrol,” which we didn’t argue with. If the adults wouldn’t do something, we would. We’d patrol our neighborhood on our bikes, the four of us, maybe a couple more if we could talk others into it. We’d chase it off like that first time, maybe for good, or maybe corner it. Clearly, it could not handle being caught.
Naturally, we brought up the scare on South Hill. He argued that was a bad place. Too isolated, couldn’t turn around easily. We needed to stay on our home turf, lots of visibility, and plenty of the Neighborhood Watch within earshot. Maybe we and the adults working together was the key, even if the adults didn’t understand the problem.
Well, that convinced us. Our first patrol was that afternoon, after school. We watched everybody’s back like hawks. Nothing had a chance to sneak up on us. Nothing could step out from behind a bush without getting spotted. By Friday afternoon there were eight of us. The next week we split up to extend our territory to the next neighborhoods over.
Nothing happened. We never saw anything. Ben thought it was because we were scaring it away. Ralph just thought we were failing, and took it personally. I myself thought the thing had just moved to different parts of town, where the new disappearances were taking place. I told him we should keep it up until the thing was caught.
It was all for naught.
One day, India didn’t show up for school. I asked everybody, the teachers, the office staff, the custodian, my parents. All of them said they didn’t know, and it was so easy to tell that they were lying. That would mark the end of the Fight Patrol.
Ben didn’t show up a couple of days after that. When I got home and collapsed into bed, my mother came in to tell me that Ben’s mother had called. She’d taken him out of school and they were moving elsewhere. I called up Ralph to let him know the news, and he was relieved too.
My last day was Friday, and then I was taken out. Again, I called Ralph so he wouldn’t worry. I guess when there were only two weeks left of school, and it was just grade school, a couple missed weeks don’t amount to much. So I ended up spending the bulk of the summer out in the country, with my grandparents, which was why I brought up my grandpa in the first place.
I suppose I did fine out on their farmhouse. I was safe. There was certainly no shortage of things for a kid to do. I think my mom felt a strong sense of relief too. Things slipped through the cracks.
My grandparents didn’t have cable, too far out of town. They just had an old-school antenna and got a couple of TV stations transmitting out of Canada, Vancouver specifically. I remember one July day, sitting in their living room. My grandmother had just fixed lunch for me and my grandfather and had gone out to do some gardening as we watched the news at noon.
My grandfather was already being ravaged by his illnesses. He was able to get around, but couldn’t do any real labor anymore. He’d lounge in front of the TV in a special lounge chair. He hardly talked, and when he did he’d just mumble some discomfort or complaint to my grandma.
The lead story on the news was the current situation in Farmingham, despite being in the neighboring country, it was still big news in Vancouver, and the whole rest of the region. It seemed the disappearances were declining, but the police were still frantically searching for a supposed serial killer. I didn’t pick up much about what they were talking about, I was a kid after all, but my grandfather was watching intently, despite his infirmity.
He mumbled something, I didn’t catch. I asked him was he said, and as I approached I heard him say “fearsome critters.”
He turned his eyes to me and said again, distinct and in a normal tone of voice, “fearsome critters,” then returned his attention to the screen. “I don’t know why they call them that. Fearsome, sure. But ‘critters?” Makes it sound silly. Like it's some sort of fairy tale that it ain’t. Guess it’s like whistling past the graveyard. Well, they don’t have to worry about them no more, guess they can call them what they like.”
Then he turned to me. “Do you know what it is?” he asked. “Squonk? Hodag? Gouger? Hidebehind?”
“Hidebehind,” I whispered, and he turned back to the TV with a sneer. I had no idea what on earth he was talking about. Remember, this would be years before I learned he spent his youth as a lumberjack. And yet, somehow, I knew exactly what we were talking about.
“Hidebehind,” he repeated. “That will do it. They give them such stupid names. The folk back East, that is. Wisconsin. Minnesota. Ohio. Way back in the old days, before my grandfather would have been your age. Back when those places were covered by forests. They didn’t give them silly names back then, no. Back then they were something to worry about. Then they moved on, though. They all went out West, to here, followed the loggers. So as once they didn’t have to worry about them anymore, they started making up silly stories, silly names. “Fearsome critters,” they’d call them. Just tall tales to tell the greenhorns and scare them out of their britches. Then they’d make them even sillier, and tell the stories to little kids to spook them.”
“Not out here they didn’t tell no stories nor make up any names. It was bad enough they followed us out. I had no clue they even existed until I saw one for myself. Bout your age, I suppose. Maybe a little older. Nobody ever talks about them. Not even when they take apart a work crew, one by one. They just pull the crews back. Wait till mid-summer when the land is dry but not too dry. Then they move the crews in, a lot of them. Do some burning, make a lot of smoke. Drives them deeper into the woods, you know. Then you can cut the whole damn place down. But nobody asks why, nobody tells why. The people who know just take care of it.”
“I guess that’s why they’re coming to us now. All the old woods are almost gone. So they’ve got to. Like mountain lions. I supposed it’s going to happen sooner or later.”
We heard my grandma come into the back door to the utility room, and stomp the dirt off her boots. My grandfather turned to me one last time and said, “Whichever way you look at it, somebody’s just got to take care of it.” Then my grandmother came in from the utility room and asked us how our lunch had been.
Now that I look back at it, that might have been the last time my grandfather and I really had a meaningful talk.
We moved back home in late August. I had been having a fantastic summer. Though looking back, I suppose it could be rough for a still-young woman to be living in her aging parents' house when she’s got a perfectly good husband and house of her own in town.
First thing I did was visit Ralph. He’d been busy. He’d fortified his treehouse into a proper, well, tree fort. He’d nailed a lot of reinforcing plywood over everything. He hadn’t gone out on patrols by himself, of course, but the height of the tree fort afforded him a view of the nearest streets. He’d also made some makeshift weapons out of old baseball bats, a hockey stick, and a garden rake. The sharp rocks he’d attached to them with masking tape didn’t look very secure, but it’d only take one or two good blows with that kind of firepower. He also explained he’d been teaching himself kung fu, by copying all the movies he saw on kung fu movies late at night on the unpopular cable channels. That was classic Ralph.
As for the monster, it seemed to be going away. Its last victim had disappeared weeks previously, part of the reason my mom felt it was time to go back. This had been at night too. What’s more, the victim had been a college student, a very petite lady, barely five feet tall, under a hundred pounds. The news had speculated that their presumptive serial killer had assumed she was a child. I remember thinking the Hidebehind didn’t care. Maybe it just thought she couldn’t run fast enough to get away or put up a fight when he caught her. Like a predator.
At any rate, the college students were incensed. Of course, they’d been hyper-alert and concerned when it was just local kids going missing. Now that it was one of their own the camel’s back had broken. They really went hard on the protests, blaming the local police for not doing enough.
They started setting up their own patrols, and at night too. Marches with sometimes dozens of students at a time. They called it “Take Back the Night.” They’d walk the streets, making sure they’d be heard. Some cared drums or tambourines. They’d help escort people home, and sometimes they’d unintentionally stop random crimes they’d happen across. I felt like this was what the Fight Patrol could have been, if we’d just been old enough, or had been listened to. This would be the endgame for the Hidebehind, one way or another.
I stayed indoors the rest of the summer, and really there wasn’t much left. It doesn’t get too hot in the Pacific Northwest, nobody has air conditioners, or at least we didn’t back then. It will get stuffy though, in August, and I liked to sleep with my window open. I could hear the chants and challenges from the student patrols on their various routes. Sometimes I could hear them coming from far away, and every now and then they’d pass down my street. It felt like a wonderful security blanket.
I also liked the honeysuckle my mother had planted around the perimeter of the house. Late at night, if I was struggling to fall asleep, the air in my bedroom would start to circulate. Cold air would start pouring in over my windowsill, bringing the sweet scent of that creepervine with it, and I’d the sensation before finally passing out.
This one night, and I have no knowledge if I was awake, asleep, or drifting off, but the air in the room changed, and cooler air poured over the windowsill and swept over my bed, but it didn’t carry the sweet smell of honeysuckle. Regardless of my initial state, I was alert pretty quickly. It was a singularly unpleasant smell. A bit like death, which at that age I was mostly unfamiliar with, except a time some animal had died underneath the crawlspace of our house. There was more to it, though. The forest, the deep forest. I don’t know and still don’t know, what that meant. Most smells I associate with the forest are pleasant. Cedar, pine needles, thick loam of the forest floor, campfires, even the creosote and turpentine of those old timey-logging camps. This was none of those smells. Maybe… rotting granite, and the spores of slime molds. Mummified hemlocks and beds of needles compressed into something different than soil. It disturbed me.
So I sat up in bed. I hadn’t noticed before, but I’d been sweating, just lightly in the stuffy summer night heat. Now it was turning cold. Before me was my bedroom window. A lit rectangle in a pitch-dark room. To either side were my white, opened curtains, the one on the right, by the open half of the window, stirred just slightly in the barely perceptible breeze.
Most of the rectangle was the black form of the protective cypress tree. Only the slight conical nature of the tree distinguished it from a perfectly vertical column. To either side was a dim soft orange glow coming from the sodium lamps of the street passing by our house. It was perhaps a bit diffuse from the screen set in my window to keep out mosquitos. In the distance was the sound of an approaching troupe of the Take Back the Night patrol. They were neither drumming nor chanting, but still making plenty of noise. They were, perhaps, three or four blocks away, and heading my way.
For some reason that I didn’t understand, I got up, off of the foot of the bed. The window, being closer, appeared bigger. I took a silent step further. The patrol approached closer. Another step. I leaned to my right, just a bit, getting a slightly wider view to the left of the cypress tree. That was the direction the patrol was coming from.
That was when it resolved. The deeper black silhouette within the black silhouette of the cypress tree. A small lithe frame with a too-bulbous head. It too leaned, in its case, to the left, to see around the cypress tree as the patrol approached. They reached our block,on the other side of the street. A dozen rowdy college students, not trying to be quiet. None of them fearing the night. Each feeling safe and determined, and absorbed in their own night out rather than being overtly sensitive to their surroundings. They were distracted, unfocused If they had been peering into the shadows, if just one of them had looked towards my house, behind the cypress tree, they might have seen the Hidebehind, poking its face out and watching them transit past. But they didn’t notice.
It hid behind the cypress tree, and I hid behind it, hoping that the blackness of my bedroom would protect me. I stood absolutely still, as I had done once when a hornet had once landed on the back of my neck. Totally assure that if I made the slightest movement or made the slightest sound that I’d be stung. I hardly even breathed.
The patrol passed, from my perspective, behind the cypress tree and temporarily out of view. The Hidebehind straightened, ready to lean to the right and watch the patrol pass, only it didn’t lean. Even as I watched the patrol pass on to the right, it stood there, stock still, just as I was doing.
It was then I became aware that my room had become stuffy again. The scent was gone. The air had shifted and was now flowing out through the screen again, carrying my own scent with it. I knew what this meant, and yet I was too paralyzed to react. The thing started to turn, very slowly. It was a predator understanding that it might have become victim to its own game. It turned as if it was thinking the same thing I had been thinking, that the slightest movement might give it away.
It turned, and I saw its face. Like some kind of rotting desiccated, shriveling fruit, it was covered in wrinkles. Circles within concentric circles surrounded its two great eyes, eyes which took up so much of its face. I couldn’t, and still struggle, to think of words to describe it. Instead, I still think in terms of analogies. At the time I thought of the creature from the film E.T., only twisted and distorted into a thing of nightmares. Almost all eyelids, and a little drooping sucker mouth. Now that I’m more worldly, it reminds of creatures of ancient artworks. The key defining feature were the long horizontal slits it had for eyes. You see that in old masks carved in West Africa, or by the Inuit long ago. You see it in what’s called the “slit-eyed dogu” of ancient Japan.
As I watched the wrinkles on the face seemed to multiply. Then I realized this was the result of its eyes slowly widening. It’s mouth, too, slowly dilated, revealing innumerable small razor-sharp teeth. A person, standing in its location, shouldn’t have been able to see in. Light from the sodium streetlamps lit the window’s screen, obscuring the interior. It was no person. It could see me, and it was reacting to my presence. Its eyes grew huge, black.
My own eyes would have been just as wide if not for my own anatomical limitations. I was still watching when it disappeared. It didn’t see it move to the right. I didn’t see it move to the left, nor did I see it drop down out of view. It simply disappeared. One fraction of a second it was there, and then it decided to leave, and so it did. It was not a thing of this world.
There were no more disappearances after that poor woman from the university. I don’t think it had anything to do with me. The media and police all speculated their “serial killer” had gone into a “dormant phase”. There was no shortage of people who tried to take credit. Maybe they deserve it. The thing’s hunting had been on the decline. All the neighborhood watches and student patrols, I think that maybe all that commotion was making it too hard for the Hidebehind to go about its business. Maybe it had gone back to the woods.
Then again, maybe Ralph had been right the whole time. Maybe it really, really, really didn’t like to be seen.
So.
Now I’ve got some decisions to make. I think the first thing I should do is look at social media and dig up Ralph. It’s been a good thirty years since I last talked to him. He ought to know the Hidebehind is back. He’s probably made plans.
Then, there’s the issue of my son. He’s up in his bedroom now, probably still mad at me. Probably confused about why I’d be so strict. Maybe he’s inventing explanations as to why.
I’m not sure, but I’m leaning toward telling him everything. He deserves to know. It’d probably be safer if he knows. I think people have this instinct where, when they see or know something that they’re not supposed to know, they just bottle it up. I think that was the problem with grown-ups when I was a kid. It was the issue with my grandfather, telling me so little when it was almost too late. I think people do it because we’re social animals, and we’re afraid of being ostracized. Go along to get along.
Hell, my son is probably going to think I’m crazy. It might even make him more mad at me. And even more confused. He knows about the disappearances. “The Farmingham Fiend” the media would end up dubbing the serial killer that didn’t really exist. It’s become local “true crime” history. Kids tell rumors about it. It was almost forty years ago, so it probably feels safe to wonder about.
So yeah, I suppose when I say I know who the real killer was, a magical monster from the woods that stalks its prey by hiding behind objects, then impossibly disappears- that I’m going to look like a total nut. I’d think that if I were in his shoes.
Except… people are going to start disappearing again, it’s only a matter of time. The media will say that the Farmingham Fiend is back in the game. Will my son buy that? He’ll start thinking about what I told him, and how I predicted it. Then he’ll remember that he saw the thing himself, he and his friends, even if it was just out of the corner of his eye.
I hope, sooner or later, he’ll believe me. I could use his help. Maybe Ralph is way ahead of me, but I’m thinking we should get the Fight Patrol back together. Father and son, this time. Multigenerational, get the retirees involved too.
Old farts of my generation, for reasons I don’t understand, like to wax nostalgic over their own false sense of superiority. We rode our bikes without helmets and had distant if not irresponsible parents. Yeah, yeah, what a load. I think every new generation is better than the last, because every generation is a progression from the last, Kids these days? They’ve got cell phones, with cameras. And helmet cams. GoPros you can attach to bikes. Doorbell cameras.
It seems the Hidebehind loathes being seen. This time around, with my grandfather’s spirit, my own memories, and my boy’s energy? I think this time we’re finally going to beat it.

2023.06.01 05:39 websterize Breaking in a new charging port
| TL;DR: My i3 displays "Unable to charge" faults during DC charging sessions. I'm unsure why. Over the holiday weekend, my kids and I took a 675-mile road trip to visit family. We set out in ideal conditions (75ºF, calm wind, <70 mph) to achieve maximum range in a 2020 i3 S BEV, which I recently purchased as a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle still under the factory warranty. We also broke in a new charging port that BMW replaced after delivery under its "Goodwill Program." A plastic tip on one of the DC pins broke off, and out of pocket, replacing the port — BMW doesn't repair parts — would have cost $2,500. ( https://www.reddit.com/BMWi3/comments/13n60e8/the_2500_plastic_nubbin/). We charged four times on the outbound leg and four times on the inbound, alternating between 15-minute boosts and 30- to 40-minute food breaks. Driving and fast charging the 337 miles to Grandpa's took 7 hours and 3 minutes. (My daughter was the official timekeeper.) Our moving time was about 5.5 hours. I used Active Cruise Control extensively, setting the speed between 65 and 70 m.p.h. with an average consumption of 3.6 miles/kWh. On half of the eight fast-charging sessions — three with Electrify America and one with EVgo — the car displayed an "Unable to charge" fault on the iDrive screen a few minutes after initiation. The mobile apps of each provider also showed a communication error between the charger and the i3. When I went outside to investigate each time, the DC charge was running strong. At one of the EA sessions where the fault appeared, the car charged at its maximum 50 kW rate for several minutes near the end, tapering at 86% state of charge. So the electrons were flowing. I'll likely schedule an appointment at the local BMW i service center that replaced the port so they can read the error codes and tell me nothing is wrong. We experienced an unusually BMW i intense road trip. Driving home today, at the beginning of the journey, my kids and I passed a white i8 in Ashtabula County, Ohio, where their grandfather lives. My hair almost caught on fire at the site in this rural area. I flashed the high beams, but he stayed dark. As he approached, he appeared to be looking down and might have been texting. Then, 75 miles from home in Western Maryland, a white i3 with 20-inch Sport wheels passed as if we were plodding at 70 mph on I-70. My son's hair almost caught on fire. He misses the 2018 white i3 S, which he called Panda, that I recently sold to another father who has a boy his age. Finally, at the last charging stop today, and as we pulled out, a Tesla Model 3 with blue brake calipers backed into the Electrify America fast charger in Bedford, Pa. It has three CCS stations and one CCS/CHAdeMO combo unit. It was the first time I'd seen a Tesla at that location. I wondered if the driver had an adapter. Waiting for traffic before pulling out, I glanced in the rearview mirror and saw the Tesla driver holding a CCS gun near the charging-port flap, tapping it. When my son was a toddler, he would tap my hand with his empty sippy cup when he needed a refill. I smiled at the memory and conjured some EV mojo, hoping she had enough juice to make it to the Breezewood Supercharger 30 minutes away. submitted by websterize to BMWi3 [link] [comments] |
2023.06.01 05:01 bartonkj Old Legal Descriptions
I draft oil and gas drilling title opinions for properties in southeast Ohio, and before drafting the title opinions, I used to run the title abstracts. The abstracts on which the opinions are based go back to the mid to early 1800s (sometimes to patent). The very first parcel I abstracted was a cemetery and I learned the importance of understanding how to map out the legal descriptions so I can keep track of where everything is. On that first parcel I abstracted, a piece of land went missing in the surveys/legal descriptions and I had to map out half the section from the outsales from the patent holder to figure out what the hell was going on. Anyway, I really took a liking to mapping out the legal descriptions and figuring out the puzzle that title opinions sometimes are. I learned a whole new set of measurements too: chains, rods, perches, roods, etc…. Anyway, I’ve also come to be very interested in surveying and have always wanted to see how the modern (and maybe not so modern) tools are used to create the legal descriptions. Just thought I would share….
I wasn’t planning to ask a question, but changed my mind at the last minute: I use net deed plotter to plot my deeds but would be curious to know if there is another plotting app out there that is simple and not terribly expensive?

2023.06.01 04:59 MammalSolidarity Looking for volunteer opportunities—not religiously affiliated
Hello, everyone! I’m excited to say that my wife and I are relocating to Madison from Orlando this July. Both of us were born and raised in Florida, and apart from a couple of friends in Milwaukee, we will have no connections awaiting us.
While I job search I’d like to hit the ground running with some volunteering to get better acquainted with the community and meet some friendly faces. I’m open to any and all suggestions. My educational background is in philosophy and English and I recently resigned from two years of employment as a legal assistant in the litigation department of a real estate law firm (I’m looking to stay away from real estate law moving forward, if at all possible).
I am an atheist, so I’d prefer a non-religious / areligious environment. Though as long as religion isn’t a focal point of the service I’m not entirely opposed.
Thank you in advance for any and all help you can provide!

For me it’s blink and you miss it things out of the corner of my eye or like what looks like a mouse or bug running along the floor. Also I hear stuff behind music sometimes. Other than that it’s stuff like thinking people are reading my thoughts if they look at me weird, also rabbits.

2023.06.01 03:30 AliveDevelopment336 Does this make sense plot wise?
Im currently working on a comic series that takes place in a medieval-like time period with the characters being anthropomorphic animals.
One of the villains in this story is an abnormally large unicorn mare (in my fantasy universe, unicorns usually grow to be about half the size of a horse) and this villain runs a group of assassins (not sure yet how they originated, but my current idea is that they were originally members of a kingdom that has long since fallen and are trying to retain what little of their bloodline they have left)
One of the people working for her is a young dragon about 20 years old (they age like humans do). Now, this dragon has the ability to dig tunnels, much like a rabbit would be able to and this allows the group to hide in these tunnels and pop out when people least expect it (that’s how they attack their enemies)
This dragon has been secretly digging escape tunnels for the innocent people from the towns that this group attacks. And the leader recently found out about this and threatens to cave in these tunnels and effectively kill the survivors that the dragon has been trying to help escape.
She makes her an offer (she’s famous amongst her peers for these “deals”). If this dragon can capture whoever’s been stealing from their food supply, then she won’t cave in the tunnels that she has made for the survivors.
Does this deal make sense…? Because it came across me that maybe it wouldn’t make sense if the deal to not kill innocent people if this individual captured a thief. So, it’s save one person or save ten people kind of thing going on.
Idk, does that like, make sense?

2023.06.01 03:14 neomancr Something to try. I've always found it way better to spend your budget on 2 amps than the same on a single "higher end amp" the complete elimination of cross talk etc can't be done in one box.
I haven't seen any amps with two transformers but even with one giant toroidal transformer and the hugest highest quality caps etc, amps are ultimate ac and not DC. So electronically it's like 1 pond vs 2. The current doesn't flow so the power doesn't even matter as much as the ability for the amp to control the amp where being silent takes as much work as playing 2hz at the same volume as it'd play 20k. The dynamic range is muddled by the bottle neck of the box itself.
I'm hoping people will start selling vertical amps that are designed to play 2 channel mono, hf and lf vs 2 channel stereo. I suspect the reason why people think stereo is not 3D is because or cross talk muddle. Speakers set up properly should be able to render exactly what the cross mix array captured so you can test it with a tascam and record something behind you. You should be able to hear the sound behind you just like you recorded it from the same place you recorded it. Mixes are now mastered in 3D space where you can literally move sounds around the "listener". 2 speaker are all you need for stereo, the surround sound format only exists for games and movies since those are meant to be a kinda ride where you have surprise explosions and stuff. And in that case different speakers like jbl basically created the sound signature we associate to theatres and clubs. Klipsch took the same concept of arena horn theatres and calculated it to work inside on a room using the room itself as part of the speaker in many of their patents which still presume a ceiling and floor which many speakers designers do and design waveguides to handle similar to how audyssey speaker calibration does the BBC dip to reduce the hit spot of summing the crossover of the tweeter and woofers and their reflections in a range where out ears are most sensitive.
This created a box with ton of different connections which is useful for surround sound but surround sound is really mono plus surround front left surround front right and surround rears. The majority of what you listen to on a surround sound system comes from the center so to render a 3d space it has to use all the other speakers.
Stereo on the other hand is 2 channel and amps started off in mono with the same power source just splitting to 2 channels to sell stereo for cheaper at the cost of what stereo really is and why we don't call it binaural. Lofi stereo became popularised which often sounds flat and worse to make up for it fake surround sound was added which added echoey sounds but not actual 3D sound I. E. You wouldn't get the sound of real depth contained in the mix which has always been there and how the "Haffler method", the thing all kids discover when you plug in your headphones partially just right and you only hear the background, comes from. Originally surround sound was just taking this signal and placing it behind you to add a third source of spacial cues.
Speaker design however goes even wilder where things like the voigt pipe were shrunken to like a foot ball using solid metal rubber seals and basically simulating the Sydney opera house on the inside so the port can create the spaciousness and play high bandwidth sound that reinforces the spacial cues vs just adding a bass boost using geometry like phi and really high compression to create the equivalent of a laser tunnel to let the sound blast out only when it's on phase and with exotic elliptical ports and moving parts on the inside beyond the drivers themselves. And the baffle over time changed to cause what's called the "vanishing act" where the speakers cease sounding as if they're making any sound and the soundscape snaps into focus as if the audio is coming from the air itself, or more specifically for a cross ray mic recording you are standing in the same space and the process it the recording is happening in reverse delivering the same experience as if you had been there. Cardioid mics are typically used for stereo sound while a dummy head is used for what ended up being being called binaural sound which is 3D but only on headphones.
Nintendo dropped dolby back after the GameCube and created their own 3D sound platform which they employed on the Nintendo DS and the 3DS allowing you to hear even the theme song to songs like the theme to big brain academy have sound effects that panned around your head and for games like Zelda and metroid to play back 3D sound I.E. Stereo sound properly done well enough to restore the stereo sound scape so as you open a door and run through, you can hear the woosh of the vacuum seal of the door behind you shut or face a water fall which is playing a simulation of the natural white noise from water splashing, and turn around and hear the entire scene turn so the water now sounds like it's behind you.
The switch supports lossless surround but the original switch didn't support stereo 3d sound, the speakers and processing down scaled the audio as well as the video presumedly to save battery so sound wasn't rendered into 3D in handheld mode. The new OLED Switch supports handheld 3D which I was really happy to see the return of since it was weird that the 3DS in terms of audio was better than the handheld experience of the switch. The switch now automatically detects 2 channel stereo 3D or surround sound speaker surround sound 5.x with enough detail that atmos up scaling works fine and rain and thunder and explosions sound vertical which matters a lot for games like, the 1st 2 Zeldas for the switch where the game is as expansive vertically as horizontal and sound is so important to the game where it'd be really hard to play without audio spacial cues to the point there's a oscilloscope for deaf people or if you were playing with the volume off.
I notice I have to do a ton of speaker calibration when people just think that stereo means sound pans left and right and get the speakers aligned to get them to snap into 3D.
The more you study speakers the more you realise they that Speakers ARE music instruments but are a type of meta instrument like a player piano which a gramophone isn't really that too far away from if you think about it. Speakers should all be called audio monitors. It's weird that we still call them speakers--a relic from when speakers were just meant to transmit voices and overhead speakers were called Tannoys. There's this concept that musicians aren't audiophiles and that just comes from how musicians know nothing sounds "real" everything is a simulation especially now a days as far as the playback is concerned and when mixing you average your mix and compare it between various speakers, then headphones of various kinds, then now suddenly we have to check to see if it works on mono too and go for a ride to see how it sounds then hop on the living room to listen on loud speakers and each time it's fun and different. So it's not that musicians don't appreciate good gear it's that musicians understand that all speakers are monitors and just tools. And it's as fun to hear your song on anyone's system as it is to hear it over dodger stadium. Or randomly hear an old song you wrote on some phone game.
It's like Trent Reznor saying that Johnny cashes version IS the definitive version of Hurt since no musician really ever finishes a song. They just get it to the best it can be because something has to be recorded and made into a thing. But you still keep changing and messing with it when you play it live. And if it were to be re-recorded it'd be "more finished" but it never really ever gets done. Which is a trap that collaborating helps you with similar to auditioning a new drummer because you want a certain sound and will find the drummer who can get it as close to what you would do or could do if you could while playing guitar.
The ability for the amp to render a stream of complex wavelengths 1 to 1 and for a single box with one power source to be forced to do that with 2 channels is kinda like trying to play two instruments at once except it happens to be just good enough to get it done. But is also like trying to play a string on a piano without causing the rest of the strings to be affected. Pianos do the opposite and take a whole bunch of strings of varying mass with a sound board based on the loudness curve to to allow it to sound like one instrument vs a bunch varying harps. The piano has a sound board that opens to corner load the bass strings. And each string is chosen for its mass and length to get the tone just right so it sounds like one instrument even though it's a bunch of strings each with a key and a hammer like a musical typewriter. It's carefully engineered to have a giant range while you can press all the notes the same pressure and expect the same volume or sweep and it sounds as level as a guitar slide. Loudness curve can be seen on the Harp as well.
Speaker design has the same thing but with a different role / utility where 2 are meant to crossover to recreate the sound of stereo, the only 3D sense that exists where you can focus and tell where and when a sound happened and where it's going without moving a muscle. And your ears are so calibrated to hear things in 3D you still hear things in your sleep and integrate it into your dream. I remember watching friends with my wife and she started without me I just picked up on an episode I remembered and dreamt about it. It's why we have alarm clocks that are audible and that works perfectly fine even when it's just a watch beeping while people can die of smoke inhalation and not wake up. But they'd still likely hear the fire alarm so hopefully they wouldn't die is the point of smoke alarms. But that's how much we're actually guided by our ears more than any other senses and it's weird that we have the concept of stereo sound NOT being 3D when that was what it originally was I e. The sound of reality. Stereos Greek for solid. Like stereoscopic is also 3D vision and not all animals with 2 eyes can see with the same level of stereo depth. While some see waaaay more like how birds of prey can see for a rabbit a mile away.
We have stereoscopic and stereophonic senses.
Transmission is the opposite of noise and a system has to be just as good at being completely silent as it is at playing the purest white noise or the most spacious pink noise. The silence should be called black noise and is actually played differently by different media where tape for instance treats silence as too high for us to hear and is still used as a tool by musicians to record due to the way it compresses vs clips when recording. Vinyl treats silence as the least texture rendered which gives vinyl a weird kinda charm in the sense that it adds a meta layer of sound you selectively filter out in your head but it drowns out the ambient noise and replaces it with on phase silence which reinforces the music like turning off the lights in a projection room so the "blacks" look blacker. White noise is also relative to each system and it makes a lot more sense imo to test white noise than the old sweep method for mono speakers. A lot of speakers don't even work when playing a single sine wave note unless you plan on playing only 8 bit beeps and bloops.
A guitar is useful as an analogy for how the amp strums the speaker. When you press down on one string, it's grounded so you can pluck it to cause the string to play a note. The rest of the guitar is going to ring sympathetically by proximity AND through the body of the guitar. Current doesn't flow through ac it's already loaded like a taut string waiting to be struck or muted. Or in terms of electronics it's a transceiver that makes irs coils very audible.
The cables are an active and a ground. I'm not even sure why stereos exist from an engineering stand point. The role of an amp is to control what happens to the "string" and a single amp having to control two "strings" at once always causes more muddled sound from the bottom up. You can even get 2 decent but cheap amps like the topping MXs which are stereo but only use one for the left side and one for the right and it'll sound like a thousand dollar difference.
https://youtube.com/shorts/o5kRvEEpWIA?feature=share4 I wish they just sold amps that were modular and controllable as a single unit but and could connect together side by side or stack. If you're not getting 3D sound through your mains you really don't have to spend much it might just be bad placement. But most of it comes down to expectations. I've noticed so many gamers who are used to logi or something and just don't expect 2 speakers to render a 3D sound stage and when you position and calibrate it (why there's a left and right balance) they're shocked that it's possible.
So odds are you already have the gear to have 3D sound, I have an atmos setup but also a 2 speaker 2 channel stereo 3D setup and they both work just as well. The only reason why I have the atmos setup is for multiple seating positions.
It's similar to how a sub woofer has its own amp so anyone with a subwoofer already has a bi amped system and 2 subs means you already have 2 parallel amps running your subs and people who get 2 amps have a hard time going back. It's not just the redundancy to fill the room since I realised its always better to run them in stereo giving you the ability to hear a 3D foundation that's consistent all the way up. If you bi amp you can also use separate channels for the HF and the LF so you can still get as much separation on the other axis to improve the fidelity.
So TIDR
Speakers + amps are as much musical instruments as a guitarist and his amps/gear and a guitarist is 3D. If he doesn't sound like it there's something wrong.

2023.06.01 02:26 Beduzzy New to floaters and I'm just spiraling down.
Hello all. 32M here.
I noticed this grey speck just last week when I looked into a clear sky. After much lurking in the Internet, I realize that it was your classic floaters.
They become more apparent when I look at a blank wall or sky. I realize that I have more in my vision. Most of the time they do not get in the way. As i type this message, I don't see any of it.
It's just that there are times I find myself hyperaware and deliberately look for them. And when they do waft in my vision, I get so frustrated, pissed, and angry.
Every day since, I am afraid of getting more floaters in the coming months. I hear that some just resolve by themselves or we just adapt to them. But I am not counting on it too much.
I do have some health anxiety. I was about to book an appointment with the ophthalmologist, but I chickened out last minute because, guess what, I was afraid of being diagnosed with the worst ("Aha! You have high eye pressure! You have this and that!").
I know floaters are essentially harmless and can be just a nuisance. But my biggest fear is glaucoma as my late grandmother and late uncle had it. Now I am just thinking that I am doomed to have it no matter what.
I know that a normal person would just think "Oh, I'll just get my health checked at the doctors so if they find anything, we can treat it early and move on."
But as someone who is anxious and who is new to this, I immediately think: "If I go to the doctors now they will be the one to deliver the bad news to me. That my eye pressure is high and that I will be blind in a few years. And that I will be doomed to have this and will think about it every day for the rest of my life."
Last night was the worst. I live alone and so after coming home from work, instead of going out for my evening run, having a nice dinner, and enjoying the finale of Ted Lasso, I just... stayed in bed and went down the rabbit hole of reading all the negative things in this sub, trying to find any source of good news, reading medical articles, watching videos, etc. on floaters.
I am just upset that I will never be able to enjoy landscapes when I travel. Or the beach. Or the clear sky. Or my bathroom. Or my bedroom in the morning. As someone who has an interest in photography, I am caught in this mental nightmare.
Anyway, I just booked another appointment with the ophthalmologist this Tuesday. I am on the verge of cancelling it again because I have a 2-week vacation on the 3rd week of June. And I feel that the bad news I will receive will just ruin everything.
Oh, dear. Help me. I just need to bite the bullet once and for all.

2023.06.01 01:49 xtremexavier15 TSWT 24 (pt 2)
The title screen was shown once again, the Aftermath theme playing as the flaring letters took the scene back to the beach where Josh was now standing alone.
"Welcome back to the Total Drama Aftermath!" he greeted. "Bruno's been restrained, and now we're going to take this episode to the next level of excitement. Here's Dawn with the deets!"
"Thanks, Josh!" Dawn said as the scene cut to a cliff near a large waterfall, the Peanut Gallery members assembled closer to the edge and divided roughly based on who they were supporting. "So, have any of you missed being in the game?"
The camera cut closer to the nineteen former competitors, none of whom said anything.
"That's what I expected!" Dawn continued, "because you're going to be competing to help your favorite Final Three contestants win!" he said as the camera panned over the unenthused faces of the gallery.
"Unsurprisingly," Dawn said, looking at the lack of Mal supporters, "no one has Mal's back for the finale."
"If it was Mike, then some of us would switch sides just to support him," Eva said.
"Good point," Dawn nodded, "but this challenge won't work that well because of it. So temporarily, I'd like some of you to switch over to Mal's side."
"Not going to happen," Ella disagreed.
"Definitely," Sadie agreed.
"Just think of it as supporting Mike, or else I'll make you do so," Dawn got serious.
Not having a choice, Beth, Brick, Cody, Courtney, Shawn, and Sky stepped over to Mal's side.
"I'm glad to hear you guys are so passionate about who you're supporting," Josh said as he walked up to the group, "because one member of each team is about to risk their lives for their favorite! Any volunteers?"
"I will volunteer," Ella immediately volunteered for Team Ezekiel.
"But I wanted to do it," Harold said.
"Surfing the waves can improve my mood, and I need a stress reducing activity to take part in," Ella mentioned.
"Let me be Mal's proxy," Shawn told his team. "I could use more screentime."
"You are skilled enough to go on a surfing mission," Cody said. "Go for it."
"Thanks!" Shawn cheered. "I get to show you all my newfound surfing skills."
"And who's going to represent Team Izzy?" Dawn asked the team.
"Ooh! Me me me!" Owen stepped up immediately.
"Perfect! Let's take a look at what Ella, Shawn, and Owen are up against," Josh said with a knowing look at the camera, and the shot cut to the bottom of a lower cliff face with a staircase carved into it. "Players have to race to the top," the host said as the shot panned upward a little ways to another grassy area where a trio of wooden heads sat behind a simple altar, the central one large and intimidating, "and then snag one of the traditional Hawaiian leis from Lono, the Hawaiian god of prosperity and sporting events." The camera zoomed in close to the central wooden depiction of the god, then panned leftward to six surfboards in a variety of colors and styles standing nearby.
"Then, grab a surfboard and take it back down the stream!" Josh continued, the camera moving towards a rapid stream running down a fairly steep slope. "And when you get to the bottom, watch out! There's a bit of a lava spray nearby," the host said, the camera cutting to the mouth of the stream at a waterfall situated next to a small but active lava vent that shot out a small burst of molten rock. A few yards away from the stream's mouth, floating on the ocean, were a trio of rafts that were empty save the flag each bearing a face of one of the finalists.
Ella, Owen, and Shawn gasped in shock.
"It's a good thing no one got heavily injured," Dawn quietly told Josh. "Everyone's in perfect shape for this challenge."
"First though," Josh said as the shot zoomed out to reveal the large blackboard that had been wheeled next to them, "here are some pictures of animals you can find in Hawaii!" he said, motioning to the images on the board.
"If you went to the Maui Zoo!" Dawn added.
"Each team must pick an animal to represent the spirit of their player," Josh explained as the camera zoomed in for a closer look at the choices: bear, dolphin, Doberman Pinscher, shark, deer, jaguar, rhinoceros, raccoon, moose, lion, and kangaroo.
"Owen," he turned first to the optimist, "which animal do you think best represents Izzy?"
"I'm going to go with the jaguar," Owen responded. "They're both super fast."
"So Izzy's spirit animal is a jaguar!" Dawn said with a smile. "Shawn, can you choose for Mal?"
"Drats," Shawn said. "There are so many vicious ones?" He stared at the board for a few moments.
"You do realize this show's half-hour right?" Josh asked impatiently.
"It's only twenty-two minutes," Shawn corrected. "And that's counting the opening and closing credits. I got it!" he declared suddenly. "Shark. Mal is a shark."
"That's a not so obvious choice," Dawn deadpanned.
"Sharks aim to kill, and Mal has the same motive," Shawn said.
"Ella, you're next. What's your choice for Ezekiel?" Josh asked the princess.
"Deer," Ella said confidently. "Ezekiel's a deer."
"Why are you picking a deer for Ezekiel?" Duncan asked.
"He's pure when compared to Izzy and especially Mal," Ella answered.
Josh spoke up. "Here's the catch: If you can make it all the way down the stream and past the lava spray without losing your leis," he explained as the camera cut to the mouth of the stream as another spurt of molten rock shot out of the vent, "you have to put that lei on your team's spirit animal to win." The shot moved down to the three rafts, upon which the three chosen animals were now standing tethered to the posts holding up the pictures of the finalists: Ezekiel's deer on the right; Mal's shark in the middle; and Izzy's jaguar on the left. The black male intern finished adjusting a collar on the jaguar's neck and the animal snarled at him, prompting the intern to fearfully turn and dive into the water.
"Looks like we made good decisions with our animals," Shawn told Ella. "Sad to say, but I'm dominating this challenge."
"Getting a lei on a shark will be harder than a deer," Ella replied.
"I really hope that jaguar doesn't eat my lei," Owen begged to himself.
"Whoever manages to lei their animal first will win a major advantage for their finalist, and whoever gets second will win a modest advantage," Dawn announced.
"And last place gets nothing," Josh added, "which will make winning really hard for their finalist, assuming they can even make it to the final challenge."
"Good luck!" Dawn told them brightly.
"And go!" Josh set them off.
Shawn struck a karate pose. "Prepare to lose to my combat and survival skills!" He ran off at top speed, leaving Owen and Ella behind.
"That advantage belongs to Ezekiel," Ella added before running off as well.
"Up I go," Owen said to himself before running in the opposite direction…only to realize his mistake and ran to where Ella and Shawn went.
\
The footage flashed ahead, showing the leis and the giant carved head of Lono as Shawn skidded up to it in his normal clothes. "Mighty Lono," he said reverently, "thank you for this flowery blessing!" He picked up a lei. "I may have forgotten my swim trunks, but I won't let you down!" he said as he looked to the sky.
It was stolen, however, by the sudden reappearance of Ella, now changed into her pink short dress-like one piece. "We'll see about that," the princess said as the conspiracy boy scowled.
Owen was the last to arrive, wearing a pair of orange trunks. He was panting as he ran and bashed his head against every low-hanging tree branch he encountered. When he finally made it to the leis, he stopped long enough to pant. "Whoo, that is steep. But I made it."
The trademark dings of a musical number sounded, the note icon appearing just above Owen.
"Sorry," Dawn said as she walked up, "but Chris said we have to make you sing a song."
"Aww man. I thought we were done with that," Shawn griped.
"I didn't mind it now," Ella said. "So what are we supposed to sing about?" she asked Dawn.
"Just a challenge song," Dawn told her.
///\
[A drumline opened the song, an acoustic guitar soon joining in as Ella bobbed her head to the rhythm.]
"Doing this Hawaii style; surfing through this magic mile!"
[The waterfall and cliff were shown from a distance as she began singing, then the shot cut in close to the surfboards again as she grabbed a yellow one, spun it around, and dipped it as though it was a dance partner.]
"Just hope I can get past by, the lava that is flying!"
[A quick pan showed the stream below, then returned to the clifftop as Ella looked down determinedly, then jumped with her lei in one hand and her board beneath her.]
"One last chance to prove my might; what else keeps me up at night!"
[Shawn sang next, looking down thoughtfully with his lei clenched in his left fist; he extended his right hand as if to grab something, then spun around and grabbed a red and orange striped surfboard from the row.]
"Why else would I volunteer, for something death-defying?!"
[He smiled confidently, then sang as he ran across to the cliff's edge, jumping into the air and putting his board beneath him. A splash was heard as the scene cut to the stream.]
"I'm winning for real!"
[Ella sang confidently, Shawm soon catching up, singing "Yeah yeah!"]
"I'm winning this deal!"
[Shawn shot back, pulling ahead as Ella repeated "Yeah yeah!"]
"I'm a surfing goddess!"
[Ella countered, pulling ahead again as Shawn sang "Yeah yeah!"]
"You're put to the test!"
[Shawn countered back as he regained the lead, Ella once again repeating "Yeah yeah!" as she caught back up.]
"I'm not stiff, but I don't move much! So what if I can't such and such!"
[Owen sang as the focus moved back to him on the top of the cliff, holding his green surfboard with a lucky charm implanted as if it were a dance partner. He stopped 'dancing' to hold his lei.]
"I'm the king...of Izzy's team! So! I'll show them I'm a winner!"
[He deftly moved behind his surfboard and shoved it to the cliff. The camera cut to the cliff as it soared toward the edge, but cut away before it was shown falling off.]
"I'm winning for Zeke!"
[Ella sang, the focus cutting back to her close-up. In the background, Shawn and Owen sang "Yeah yeah!" together.]
"'Cause I'm not weak!"
[The camera pulled back to show an image of Ezekiel sitting on the surfboard and waving to a happy Ella before disappearing in a sudden puff. Once again, Owen and Shawn sang "Yeah yeah!" in the background.]
"I'm surfing for Mal!"
[Shawn sang as the camera cut to him, showing an image of Mal sitting on the edge of the surfboard and smiling triumphantly. In the background, Ella and Owen sang "Yeah yeah!"]
"And he's not my pal!"
[Shawn sang skeptically, the image of Mal on his board squinting her eyes in frustration and disappearing with a puff.
"Aaahhh!" Ella suddenly yelped, gaining the attention of both Shawn and the camera. "Hot hot hot!" she said in a slight panic as she ducked under a few burning rocks that had been ejected from the volcanic vent. "Ahh!" she finished as the tip of her board was singed by one.
"Ah!" Shawn said, the camera cutting back to him as he also tried to dodge the semi-molten rock and got his board burned in the process. "No fair!"]
"This is messed up, it's true!"
[Owen sang to a few pointed drum beats, the shot cutting to a close-up of him in a surfing pose.]
"I'm not planning to sue!"
[The camera pulled back to show Owen riding his surfboard through the lava spray.]
"Step aside and let me through!"
[Shawn sang to Ella, speeding up and passing her; in the background, all three of their voices chanted "Yeah yeah!"]
"I'm not quitting soo~oon!"
[Ella countered, quickly catching up so that she and Shawn were vying for the lead. Once again, all three of their voices chanted "Yeah yeah!" in the background.]
"Oh~oh, I'm winning this ti~ime!"
[Ella continued, taking the lead briefly as the three voices chanted "Yeah yeah!" once again.]
"Sorry Ella, it's mine!"
[Shawn countered, taking the lead again as the three voices chanted "Yeah yeah!"]
"Sorry but I'm be-hind!"
[Owen told them, catching up to them but not gaining the lead.]
"Oh~oh, I'm winning this time!"
[The three sang together, the camera zooming out to show Shawn in the lead, Ella behind him, and Owen in the rear.]
"Yeah, yeah, yeah!"
[The three sang together again, finishing out the song.]
///
Shawn was still in the lead after the music faded out, and was quickly faced with another volley of burning rocks. He quickly swerved out of the way of one after the other. He quickly looked back, but in his distraction, allowed another burning rock to land on his board just as he shot off the final waterfall.
He smiled confidently, then looked down and noticed the rock burning his board. "That isn't good!" he said, his panic causing him to throw his lei a little early. He splashed down safely into the ocean, but the ring of flowers didn't quite make it all the way to its intended target – it only landed in the tank, and was promptly picked up and swallowed by the shark. The shark laughed playfully, earning a groan from Shawn.
"WOOHOO!" Owen cheered as he fell off his board and landed in the ocean. The camera followed the surfboard as it sailed through the air with the lei on top... and was kicked by the jaguar into the water herself.
"Ooh," Dawn and Josh winced from the host couch.
"Whoops," Owen winced as the camera cut to him.
He was promptly alerted by a scream overhead, and looked up to see Ella finally shooting over the waterfall on her board. She flew straight for her target, and the deer smiled at the human coming its way. The princess managed to splash down right in front of the raft and let the lei loose as she did so, and she managed to hook it on the deer's antlers. Ella resurfaced behind the raft.
"Did I win?" she said, looking around as she caught her breath.
"Ella won it!" Josh said as the scene returned to the hosts and the crowd went wild.
"The others were close though," Dawn added.
"So is Bruno going to be sent to your animal shelter?" Josh asked the moonchild.
"He is, but I'm going to ask Ella to take care of him by singing her songs in case he acts out of control," Dawn winked.
A cough interrupted them. "Sorry," Ella said as she walked up, Shawn and Owen right behind her and all three still dripping wet, "but what did I win?"
Josh smiled. "That was an impressive display, Ella," Josh told her, "but, no one was actually supposed to win."
"What?" the three challenge competitors said at once, the crowd wincing and murmuring their obvious disapproval.
"It was Chris's idea," Dawn explained. "But someone did win, because all of you are excellent!" She looked at the camera, and the crowd cheered. "And thanks to Ella, Ezekiel is going to receive a major advantage to use in the final challenge!" As she spoke, the black male intern brought a wheelbarrow out center stage. "Which is good for our underdog of the season," she added. "A wheelbarrow!" she announced, the camera moving in for a close-up of the tool. "It'll make sense later," she added as and aside.
"Team Mal, congrats," she continued. "You win the minor advantage: a baby stroller!" A white male intern wheeled the carriage out next to the wheelbarrow.
"And since Team Izzy came in last," Josh announced, "Izzy wins nothing but chance of losing the finale!"
Dawn laughed a bit. "That's not going to help her in the final challenge."
"How will Ezekiel's advantage play out?" Dawn asked the camera with a smile. "Will Mal be able to keep up with just a stroller? Will Izzy even be able to keep up with her disadvantage?"
"How in the name of Lono will any of them get here for the finale?" Josh added.
"Find out the answers to those and a lot of other questions next time," Dawn said as the season's blaring title music played, "on Total! Drama! World Tour!"

(Bonus Clip)
The clip opened to the Hawaiian beach. Ella was reclining on a chair in her swimsuit as Ron and Luna accompanied her.
"Now remember, Bruno will join the animal shelter, so do your best to make him feel welcome," Ella advised the hawk and rabbit, who nodded in agreement.
She then saw Sadie walking up to her. "Hello Sadie. The episode is over, so you're free to converse with me," Ella said.
Sadie sat next to Ella while Ron and Luna left in order to give them privacy.
"You were right about Mal being in control over Mike, and I didn't believe you because I didn't think anyone could be truly evil," Sadie began her apology.
"You never took into consideration my words, and that really hurt me as we were friends," Ella responded.
"You were right. I was so mean to you, and you were just trying to help me," Sadie said. "I'm sorry for doing those things."
"I should apologize as well. I was too fierce in trying to get you to believe me, and that made you irritated," Ella apologized as well.
"So can we go back to being best friends before the Mal fiasco?" Sadie begged.
"No. BFFFLS!" Ella spoke jovially before they embraced each other and stayed that way for a while.
The camera cut to the left to show Ron, Luna, and Bruno smiling and wiping tears at Ella and Sadie's reconciliation.

Jeff Lindsay reflects on the universal scope of the atonement and salvation of little children in the Book of Mormon and how it reveals God's fairness and mercy towards all His children. Lindsay notes that the Book of Mormon provides meaningful echoes of these doctrines that are later revealed in the Doctrine and Covenants. He highlights 2 Nephi 9:23-26 and Jacob's teachings concerning the mercies of the Holy One of Israel and how they are claimed through the atonement of Christ. Lindsay argues that these teachings demonstrate the universal scope of God's love and should give us hope and faith in a fair, merciful God.

BYU is one of 10 major universities (along with Harvard, Ohio State, and the University of Utah) tapped to help with this $150 million effort by the Back Pain Consortium Research Program. The research team is collecting data on both biopsychosocial well-being and spinal motion. Preliminary results have been very promising and show that spinal motion phenotypes correlate with biopsychosocial well-being; patients in certain phenotypes experience much more severe pain than others. These findings support the practice of motion-based diagnostics, as well as the theory that patients who exhibit similar phenotypes will respond in like manner to similar treatments. Ongoing research by the BYU team and others is dedicated to identifying the optimal treatments for patients with chronic low back pain according to their individual needs.
