Looking for a Gaming/Workstation laptop

2023.06.01 13:15 antnbr Looking for a Gaming/Workstation laptop

Hi folks, my job is making me moving between 2 countries, and I need a portable but powerful machine to perform everything I already do but with one tool. As for information I already own a desktop PC (R7 3700x/2070supe32Gb of RAM) and a laptop (Dell Inspiron 15 7590/i5 9400h/gtx1650/16Gb of RAM), but now I realise I don't want to move my desktop pc back and forth and I really fancy a decent gaming/workstation that makes use of external monitors in both places I live in France & Scotland. The goal is to game (AAA games but currently mostly Elden Ring) and work (mostly Adobe and 3D modelling).
Since it's so incredibly hard to compare and understand the current selling proposition I'm asking here so thanks in advance !

2023.06.01 13:02 AutoModerator /r/snooker for the 2023-24 season

Hello!
Well its been a month since we saw history being made in the Crucible Theatre: Luca Brecel winning his first world title and becoming the first player from Continental Europe (and first player from Belgium) to win the title. The 2022-23 snooker season was chock full of shock results and a changing of the guard in many ways, and the next season doesn't intend to disappoint us at all! Will the fabled "Class of 92" return to winning ways, or has the Covid-19 pandemic itself become the necessary change that snooker may or may not have required for its long term future?
It'll be an interesting season for sure, as the World Snooker Tour will be returning to China as well, the first events to be held in the country since 2019. We already had the Hong Kong Masters last season, which set a record for the largest audience in snooker history, but unfortunately that event is not on the calendar this year, and the fate of the Turkish Masters hangs in the balance as well.
All that aside, lets look back at last season and see what changed for the community:
Based on your feedback shared over the course of the entire season, we're looking forward to the 2023-24 snooker season and want to provide you with transparency about how things will be handled with the Tournament Discussion threads, as well as other minor points that came up during the season.
1. AutoModerator will continue to be the poster for all Tournament Discussion threads going forward.
At the start of last season, our main user who handled all TD threads quit Reddit. This led to a vacuum in relation to who should manage the threads in the future. We trialled using AutoModerator for all threads to provide consistency to the community and we believe this to be a net positive change which removes any kind of "ownership" concerns, as future moderation teams can continue the management of these posts. Therefore, effective immediately, any and all tournament discussion threads (for this season and all future seasons) will be scheduled posts through AutoModerator for the foreseeable future, and they will continue to be "one thread for the whole tournament", with the exception of the World Champs as discussed later.
  1. No threads will be made for Qualifying rounds, with a specific set of notable exceptions.
Throughout last season, World Snooker Tour used a qualifying round for the vast majority of tournaments. This season, we expect that this will continue and these rounds are often only accessible to users through paywall platforms such as Discovery+, making them inaccessible to the majority of fans. They also don't generate a huge amount of interest from the community anyway, as during actual Qualifying sessions, little community posts were made, except for notable results.
Therefore, with that in mind, and as World Snooker Tour have decided they will continue with the Qualifying rounds format in subsequent season, official discussion threads for Qualifying rounds will not be made going forward (for this season or any other season), but we encourage the community to make new posts as required for any notable results or matches that people might feel they should watch or need to know about.
Two specific tournaments are exempted from this rule: those being the UK Championship and the World Championship. These two events are given more notability by World Snooker Tour, as well as more "meaningful" coverage that is also available for free, so it is reasonable to give them more attention on the sub than other events.
  1. No threads will be made for the Championship League.
These tournaments are generally played behind closed doors and get little televised coverage. Since a large portion of the community is based in either the UK or Europe, where access to the events is limited to one stream on YouTube [which lacks commentary] and one stream on Facebook [which does have commentary], and these events have typically generated little interest due to their unique format, we don't think its in the best interests to provide a thread for discussion threads for either version of the Championship League, but -- like Qualifying rounds above -- you're more than welcome to post a new thread for notable results that you've seen mentioned on social media.
  1. The televised rounds of the World Championship will use an updated thread format for this season.
Last season, we trialled an unusual format whereby Round One matches were in one thread, Round 2/Quarter Finals matches were split into two threads [one per table], Semi-Finals were covered in one thread and the Final was given a thread to itself.
Our intention was to make things more intuitive to navigate and to reduce the potential for spoilers, as people may be watching one match but not the other and end up being spoiled. However, feedback during the event showed that while many appreciated the format of the threads, others did not and it led to confusion, as people did not know what Table One or Table Two referred to.
We want to make these threads for the event easy to use: the World Championship is our premier event on the calendar and draws a lot more activity than any other event on the calendar, which means we want to make sure that everyone can use them. Across all of the threads for the World Championship, they amassed well over 17,500 comments alone. If we put all those comments into just one thread, they would be an extremely painful experience, not only for us moderators having to remove bad comments, but also for you trying to read the thread (as well as loading said thread!)
With this in mind, and based on your feedback, we are going to use a different format for these threads this season: again, like last season, your feedback will help us to shape a format that works for you but also makes it easier for us to moderate over the tournament. The new format will involve each individual round being given its own thread: no separation will be used for each table, as the designation was deemed confusing and unnecessary.
  1. The sticky post for matches to be played on each day will continue, but with some specific exceptions
Along with the use of AutoModerator for owning the discussion threads themselves, we also provided a sticky post which detailed matches to be played per day for each stipulated session of that day, as well as other notable information relating to each session [eg matches cancelled because a player withdrew]. We believe that this information can be useful for fans, even if it is duplication of information provided by World Snooker Tour, so this will continue for all threads as required.
However, this information will not be provided for those tournaments played in Asia. This is because of timezone reasons, and matches will be played at times when most of the moderators will not actually be able to check what matches are being played and on what table. For those events, the sticky post will just detail some useful information not covered by the OP, if any: otherwise, no sticky post will be given.
  1. The rule regarding "don't post threads with spoilers in the title" will be reviewed.
This has become a point of contention recently, as Reddit has made several changes that mostly make the rule redundant. However, we appreciate that a thread containing a spoiler can still be disruptive as not everyone will be aware of these features, or may not be using a version of Reddit where they exist. With that in mind, our moderators will be reviewing the specific rule and see if it needs to be tweaked or removed. We will provide updated information on this later in the year [but before the Champion of Champions commences]

Okay, long post over with! While the professional tour is taking a well-earned break, Q School is well underway to see who is joining (or rejoining) the tour. Let's all congregate again when the 2023-24 season recommences and enjoy the time to relax! :)
With regards,
- /snooker Moderation Team

Working Glitches

This is the Working Glitches Section! This is always being improved, and if you have any recommendations please let me know in the comments or send me a direct message. If you know a glitch is working on any other platform I haven't included or doesn't work anymore, also let us know. If a glitch is patched then it will be stricken through. If a platform is in italics, it means it is unsure. If a platform is just "Xbox" or "PlayStation", that means that it works with both old gen and new gen versions of the game.

2023.06.01 12:48 SpineInABaguette Mother in law has offered to help shoot a wedding and wants advice!

My 70yo mother in law has a friend who is getting married and can't afford a photographer, my MIL has offered to shoot the wedding and wants advice!
She presented me with an ageing Panasonic DMC-FZ40 with a 1/2.33" sensor and said "I don't want to learn how to be a photographer, and I don't want to be messing around with lots of settings, I just want to concentrate on taking pictures"
My initial reaction was anxiety as I cannot imagine entrusting my wedding photos to a non photographer, but then I tried to remind myself that not everyone takes photos as seriously as us and are happy with any reminders of the day even if they are blurry and dark!
However I want to try and make this couples photos as good as they can be. What should I say?
I was thinking of setting the camera to P, auto iso, minimum shutter speed of 1/30 or 1/60, and telling her not to zoom in too much, especially indoors, to reduce camera shake blurriness. I was also thinking about setting the camera to record jpg+raw so I can recover any bad exposures - but the memory card is so slow it takes 5 seconds to record a single frame!
I told her not to use flash indoors as I hate the horrible shadows a front firing flash makes, but was this wrong advice?
She did mention that she might be able to borrow a canon DSLR from her work, but was worried to would be too big and awkward for her to use on the day - how much should I push her to use it? As the sensor size difference is enormous!
Anything else I should do or say? As I said I'm coming over in a rash thinking about how bad the photos might be, but perhaps I just need to relax and accept not everyone sees this as important!
Thanks.

2023.06.01 12:43 Allicia_York First Contacts (Part 6)

[Part 1](https://www.reddit.com/HFY/comments/131t1q9/first_contacts_part_1/)
[Part 5](https://www.reddit.com/HFY/comments/13rv3xp/first_contacts_part_5/)

“Let’s introduce ourselves to the Captain of this boat!”
Nathan pushed the door control and was greeted with a flashing Yellow light, the door had already been locked down, with that, he took two steps back and levelled his pistol at the bottom left of the door, he began firing his gun, spacing the shots around the edge working his way up the left and along the top of the door, reloading after 12 shots.
Reloading was done between two boxes, when one was empty, or low, he would push it into a belt pack he was wearing, a whir from the pack indicated that it was feeding new rounds into the box and within seconds it was full again.
It took a total of 20 shots for him to reach the place he had started, Nathan reloaded his pistol once more and stepped forward with a spring and brought his right foot up to kick the door, the sound was almost as loud as the gun, the metal finally giving in to the stress and falling away.
Beyond the door were a dozen command officers and four Axarli soldiers, they were already disarmed and ready to surrender, likely as a result of watching the carnage that Nathan had already inflicted on their defence forces.
Most of the Officers were Sovereigns of the Pearls, though a couple of Euterians and a Forgol were among them. “Which one of you is the captain?” Nathan’s voice was raised to an uncomfortable level for the Sovereigns who all covered their auditory antennae, one of the Sovereigns stepped forward her hands still clasped over her antennae.
“Everyone else on the floor, face down and arms out!” Nathan’s voice was still raised but he had lowered it a little. The remaining crew complied with his command.
Nathan lowered his voice back to normal conversational level and turned to the Sovereign Captain “Captain, I understand you are taking prisoners from the surface.”
“That is correct.” The Sovereigns were not able to speak Orvangian directly, so her words issued forth from a worn translator device about her neck.
“I would like you to call your crew and have them surrender.”
“I Do not know your species, but you stand with the Federation against our might!” the Captain and her Sovereign Officers all flourished their hands and feelers in a dance-like display.
I am not sure what happened next, a pulse of electromagnetic energy hit me and my suit was instantly fried, pain shooting through my body at the same time, I found myself laying on the floor the ceiling above me decorated with the flashes of Nathan’s pistol.
Despite the repeated blasts of that handheld cannon, I couldn’t hear a sound and I could see my thoughts around me as though I had engaged in the bond with an Orvangian, I was soon floating on a warm ocean of orange light, enveloping me in its softness.
My eyes drifted closed and Purple Valuri bloomed before me, the faces of my family and the distant arches of my home rose into the sky above. I whooped and laughed like Nathan as I clung to the velvety mane of a Plains Rasil, its legs pounding the landscape into the past behind me, we rose over the hills and across the savannah of Talloral and I Roared like the Volluk on the plains of Orvang.
Dreams fell away to a burning pain as consciousness returned to me, I was in a medical bay, opening my eyes was painful, the white surfaces and bright lights making them sting as much as my chest did.
A pair of Tilik were lingering close to my bedside with relief washing over their faces, they moved back and Nathan stepped into my field of view. His face now sporting several fine slices that welled up with red “Jin! We are glad you’re awake.”
The Tilik flapped their tentacles in agreement and I heard a muffled voice in the background. With considerable pain, I pushed myself into a sitting position so I could survey our situation.
We were still aboard the Separatist ship, in a medical bay, there was a pile of equipment blocking the doors and they had been welded closed, the Euterian officers from the bridge were strapped down to one of the beds though they were unconscious, the Forgol officer was standing beside Nathan a thin trail of white bile trickling from his nasal ducts a sign of the fear and discomfort he was in as a result of having Nathans Pistol barrel so far down his throat that it was likely brushing against his oral lymph nodes.
“What happened?”
Nathan bared his teeth at me, the Forgol seeming to shrink slightly at the expression “Those bejewelled Centipede guys pulled a McClain on us, blasted us with an EMP and Frag weapons.
“I had to shoot them and the power armour guys too, it was a blood bath.
“Your space suit took most of the damage and got fried by the EMP, but you got stuck pretty good yourself. Doc here says you had 28 flechette pieces in you.” Nathan gestured to one of the Tilik.
“The Bejewelled Centipede Guys are called ‘Sovereigns of the Pearls’ and the Power armoured guys are Axarli.” My voice was a little weak but it brought Nathan’s Smile back.
“So, there’s a whole army of those Axarli guys out in the hallway now, waiting for our surrender, but my new pal here says there is a service duct that runs through the floor of this room.” Nathan patted the back of the Tilik he had called Doc earlier.
“Even if we escape this room, where would we go?” I winced and even yelped a little as I swung my legs to hang over the side of the bed.
“Well, this ship’s sensors and weapons are out at the moment, I may have devastated the bridge a bit, so I need you and Doc to go down to the Shuttle and bring it around to their Hangar bay.
“Me and Mister Tactical Officer here.” He grinned at the Forgol officer still tasting his pistol. “We go down to holding, free your fellow crew members and meet you at the light frigate they have parked in the hangar.”
It was as insane as every other plan he had come up with, yet I couldn’t shake the fact that his plans seemed to work every time so I mirrored his thumbs-up gesture to him and slid off the bed.
Gravity on this ship was about 15% lower than what I was used to, which made standing possible, but I could feel the slices of pain in my chest and legs, medication was probably the only reason I was able to move at all.
Nathan passed me the Laser Rifle again and I pointed it at ‘Doc’ but Nathan pushed my gun down, “Woah there, Doc is on board with us, he is my newest pal ok.”
The Tilik’s cybernetic translator chipped in with a slightly musical tone “I don’t want to be here either.”
Doc moved to a floor panel and lifted it away, below was a narrow catwalk surrounded by bundles of cables and pipes. Nathan turned to the second Tilik medic “Remember what I told you!” it nodded and injected itself with a sedative, slumping to the floor within moments.
Doc dropped onto the catwalk and I followed, “Good luck Nathan!”
“Same to you Jin.”
Doc began heading left along the duct, Nathan and his hostage dropped in after us and lowered the panel back in place then headed right.
Doc and I soon arrived at a service shaft, it ascended about ten decks, but it went down to the very bottom of the ship, where we were going. The wall next to the duct had a rail mesh on it and a half dozen tractor lifts were parked here, Doc configured one and stepped off the edge, it grabbed him in its tractor beam and began a swift descent, I followed suit, setting it for deck 210 and stepping into the shaft.
The little rail-mounted tractor-beam device reached Deck 210 in under a minute, it would have been an exhilarating ride if it weren’t for the danger I was in.
Doc arrived a few seconds ahead of me and was waiting on the floor of the shaft when I arrived, he lifted a wall panel off once I dismounted from my tractor lift, beyond the panel was an engineering hallway, not far from the hub where a crate of Tilik still sat.
As we walked past the crate Doc read the top, “Can we let them out now?”
“Let’s take it to the airlock, we can let them out just before we exit the ship.”
Doc hooked a lifter dolly to the crate and began pushing it along with us.
We soon reached the airlock Nathan and I had used to enter the ship, my suit was damaged from the flechette attack, and the computer systems had rebooted now but I had to patch it before we could decompress, “Do you need any protection?”
“How long will we be in the vacuum?” Tilik are all able to survive for short periods out in space, but some are augmented for longer periods.
“About 20 minutes, maybe more.”
Doc took a magnetic field generator from the airlock and attached it to his harness, it would provide additional protection from radiation, which he was going to need so near those engine cones.
Once my suit was sealed, we stepped into the airlock and I reached out to the crate to push the release, as soon as the lid popped up, I pulled back and hit the airlock controls. It only took moments for the airlock to cycle and the outer door to open.
I took the lead out into the engine spaces and made my way back to the panel that Nathan had hastily welded back into place, with the laser rifle I shot each weld and then gave it a good kick, the panel breaking loose and floating away from the hull. It occurred to me that I had never done anything like this before, this was the sort of action that Nathan would have taken, it was exactly how he had gained access to the command centre, shot the door and kicked it open.
I didn’t dwell on the thought, the engines were still hot so I clambered out followed by Doc, the Shuttle wasn’t far away so we moved as quickly as we could manage.
It wasn’t long before we were in the rear of the shuttle, “Doc, can you fly?”
“No, I am a medical specialist, but I do have some engineering training.”
“See if you can get the laser banks back online.”
Doc pulled a repair kit from the wall and began a diagnostic survey, I left him to work and glanced at the device sitting on one of the chairs here, it was clearly the black case Nathan had recovered from the Endeavour, but now it was open, the lid was raised on a framework, becoming the top of the device, I recognised what it was, though I had never seen a portable one before, it was a Fabricator, able to manufacture items from schematic diagrams, the Doradul had several of them in the engineering bays but they were large and fitted into the walls.
I stepped through into the cockpit and strapped in, I wasn’t a pilot like Nathan but I had hundreds of hours of shuttle operations time, I could only hope that the battleship’s weapons were still disabled.
The shuttle detached from the Separatist ship and I kept close to the hull, moving as quickly as I felt comfortable doing at this distance. Once we were out from among the engine cones I turned onto the dorsal surface of the battleship, its cannons were all aimed forward now, sitting in their standby positions and none reacted to my presence.
I picked up the pace as I navigated between turrets and antennae clusters, not as reckless as Nathan had been, but I was ignoring my instructor’s safety rules as it knocked a radar dish off the surface of the battleship.
We were almost at the prow of the ship where the hangar was when the laser banks came back to life, I set them to strafing auto-targeting mode, so I could shoot any Axarli in the hangar with the squeeze of a trigger.
My reckless disregard for flight safety reached its peak as I passed the prow of the battleship, making a hard roll and braking as Nathan had done, I even bared my teeth when I completed the move without crashing.
“What was that!” I heard Doc’s Translator proclaim from the rear compartment.
The Hangar ahead was open an atmospheric shield keeping it from depressurising, I could see a few deck crew and some Axarli were targeted by the shuttle’s computer.
I advanced the shuttle through the shield so the weapons fire would not evacuate the atmosphere, the sudden shift from zero-G to the downward pull of the hangar’s gravity forced the shuttle’s nose thrusters to fire and shook the shuttle. As soon as we were through the shield I pressed the trigger and the shuttles laser bank began to fire, deck crew scattered to shelter while Axarli troops began to return fire.
There was plenty of space in the hangar, the Light Frigate stood like a tower on the Port side allowing me to make evasive moves and even take cover. It didn’t take long before the hangar deck was largely clear, even the Axarli had retreated into the surrounding hallways and rooms to avoid being incinerated by the shuttle’s laser.
After they withdrew I had little to do but hover and wait for Nathan to arrive, Doc came into the cockpit once we had stopped firing “What now?”
“Until Nathan and my crew arrive there is not much we can do.” The Tilik had sided with the Separatists back during the war and Doc deciding to join us was beginning to bother me, why would he sign up for fleet duty only to abandon it?
“Doc, why are you here?”
He looked slightly puzzled at my question, “You mean why did I decide to join you and Nathan?”
“Yes, why would you sign up for fleet service in the Separatist army only to abandon your post now.”
“I didn’t sign up, you know we share our home planet with the Norold.”
I gave an affirmative gesture.
“Well since the Separatist council decided to rebuild the fleet they needed crews, and the Norold were quick to support the new fleet, they decided that every family of Norold and Tilik would provide one person for the fleet forces.
“This was easy for them, they have families of dozens each, but Tilik families are usually no more than five to eight, so to protect my family from reprisals and my mother from forced service I stepped in to replace her.”
Doc deflated in the co-pilot’s chair, I was aware that the Tilik were very peaceful before the Separatist war, many believed that they were not enthusiastic supporters of the Separatists, especially since the planet Ghoat was still a member of the federation despite being a Tilik colony.
“So, you figure that the Separatist fleet will write you off as a casualty now and your family will be safe.”
“Exactly, the Euterian Officers don’t know I am siding with you, my colleague understands and promised to keep it secret, the Fleet will compensate my family and send condolences.”
Through the window of the shuttle, I saw weapons fire again, a group of Axarli backing out of their cover position and under fire from a combination of Plasma Fire and the unmistakable streaks of white thunder that Nathan’s pistol issued forth.
I opened fire again, clearing away the Axarli that had broken cover, moments later Nathan emerged with twenty of the Doradul’s Crew and one Forgol captive, they were using Axarli sidearms and seemed to be carrying makeshift shields.
Axarli in other covered positions began firing on them so I lowered the shuttle and fired back, Nathan pushed his team toward the frigate and up the gangway.
I moved the shuttle to cover them as much as possible, taking dozens of hits from plasma casters, their rifles were not going to fell the shuttle quickly but the damage was already mounting up, soon my laser bank was down again and moments later navigation followed.
“Jin, we are about to launch.” Buddy’s voice sounded over my suit’s com system.
“OK, I am right behind you, I will need to dock soon, my navigation is out.” As soon as I finished speaking, my Warp drive went offline as well.
The Frigate began to ascend moments later, I turned and pushed out ahead of it escaping the weapons fire before anything else went down. The frigate soon followed and once it was clear of the battleship’s hangar its shuttle bay door rolled open and launched the emergency shuttle that was blocking my path.
The moment the bay was clear I manoeuvred into it, the frigate’s tractor beams bringing me to a safe landing, the bay doors closed and the ship jumped to warp moments later.
Doc and I disembarked from the shuttle and took the elevator to the bridge, there were a half dozen members of the Doradul crew here, manning stations. All but one were auxiliary bridge crew, ones that would take night shifts, the only member of the primary crew here was the Secondary Ops Officer, he and I shared the same rank, though he was technically my superior.
In the pilot’s seat was Nathan grinning his toothy grin at me, “Welcome to the Endeavour 2.”

2023.06.01 12:36 RooteDavid Why is Chromium so bad on Linux?

I use Firefox, I'm not looking for browser recommendations. I just don't get how all these things are still issues.

Problems: X11 by default, no official hardware acceleration support, inconsistent, stuttery framerates, broken sync.

Base Chromium is the worst offender. The ArchWiki page on it is so, so long, and 3/4ths of it is tricks/optimizations/troubleshooting solutions.
Brave and Thorium are by far the best, most optimized Chromium-based browsers that I've found. They implement patches and fixes by default, fixing some of the issues you run into with vanilla Chromium.
In this best case scenario (Brave/Thorium), you can have:

The worst part is that Electron is also based on Chromium, and more and more developers are using it to develop apps.

This means that any app built with Electron is going to have the same framerate and hardware acceleration issues. Try the official Discord Linux client on a high refresh monitor. It's going to run at 60 FPS. If you pass some flags when starting it, you can reach the stuttery 110ish FPS I mentioned earlier.
It is just not a nice experience. I would like someone knowledgeable to explain why these things (especially the framerate stutter) have not improved over the years, when on Windows, everything seemingly functions properly. Is it due to a lack of interest towards developing Chromium on Linux?
Thanks in advance for answers!

2023.06.01 12:15 AutoModerator June What Editing Software should I use?

Are you looking to pick editing software? THIS IS YOUR THREAD.

TL;DR - you want DaVinci Resolve Resolve, Hitfilm Express, Olive Editor or Kdenlive.

Seriously, read This whole post!

This post solves 98% of "what software do I use" questions.

There are key steps you need to take before you reply if you want help. Especially the last sentence.

----------------

THREE THINGS YOU HAVE TO KNOW.

These three things are crucial (spoiler tag to make you read):
  1. Footage type (See below)
  2. Hardware/System specs. Just saying "HD or 4k" doesn't help
  3. Even if you don't want something "fancy", you still need to read this.
  4. IF YOU DO NOT START YOUR REPLY with the proper format, you won't get a response.
Much of this comes from our fuller Wiki page on software.
If you get to the end of this post and you need more, check there first.
For example, MOBILE EDITING SOLUTIONS are in the wiki. Nobody is an expert on all of the tools.
Trying it with your system and footage is the best way to work.
-------------------------------

1 - Footage type. Know what you're cutting.

FOOTAGE TYPE AFFECTS playback. READ THAT AGAIN. The compression type is key.
Action cam, Mobile phone, and screen recordings can be difficult to edit, due to h264/5 material (especially 1080p60 or 4k) and Variable Frame Rate issues..
AGAIN: Footage types like 1080p60, 4k (any frame rate) are going to stress your system.
When your system struggles, the way that the professional industry has handled this for decades is to use Proxies. Proxies are a copy of your media in a lower resolution and possibly a "friendlier" codec.
A proxy workflow more than any other feature, is what makes editing high frame rate, 4k oand h264/5 footage possible. It is important to know if your software has this capability.
See our wiki about* Variable Frame Rate* Why h264/5 is hard* Proxy editing
-------

2- Key Hardware suggestions:

The suggested hardware minimums for the "average" user
Can other hardware work? Certainly - but may not necessarily provide a great experience.
GPUS do not help with the codec/playback of media but do help with visual effects.
We have a dedicated hardware thread monthly. Hardware questions belong there.
-------------

3- I Just need something simple. I don't need all those effects.

Sadly, having super easy-to-use software means engineering teams*.*
iMovie came with your Mac and is by far the easiest-to-use editor for either platform.
There isn't a lightweight, easy-to-use free/inexpensive editor that we'd recommend for Windows the way we recommend iMovie. We wish iMovie was available for windows. The closest we've seen on windows is Olive editor (open source)
----

Okay, so what do you suggest?

Editing

Two tools that charge but have very usable free versions.

I want Easy

Know that any of these tools are limited - many "advanced" features aren't ever going to be available here and there is no growth to a professional market.

I want the tools that professionals use:

In alphabetical order:
These all have costs, some of them are subscription only. If you're thinking you want to move in the future to doing this professionally, we'd suggest Premiere for most people.

Open Source tools

Open source tools. We think these are great - but there is no UI team/support
We mention other tools in the wiki, but generally, nobody has bought/tested the tools at \$100 or less. And we're not suggesting the "bigger" tools but happen to discuss them. 99% of people who come here are looking to play for zero dollars.)

Effects

Web Sites worth noting

Compression

Shutter Encoder is a free, cross-platform compression tool. It's a GUI front end to FFMPEG (a command-line utility.) It does more than handbrake, our prior favorite.
Lossless cut is an excellent tool to "snip" out a section of what you downloaded. Shutter does this too, but Lossless is a little easier.

Mobile

-------

Nov 2022.

Clipchamp. Capcut.
Professional tools aren't suggested - because invariably, someone comes into this thread asking why we don't suggest a $600/yr subscription for hobby editors.
------

Feb 2023

Yes, we're watching the space about ChatGPT, Stable Diffusion and more. But there isn't an auto editor, not based on text description - not yet. And certainly not for free.
If you have tools you think are AI editorial tools, post them here.
This exists to answer the question, "What AI tool will edit for me."
-------

If you've read all of that, start your post/reply:

"I read the above and have a more nuanced question:"

And copy (fill out) the following information as needed:
My system
My media
---
(And just because some people get confused by this each month:
This thread isn't for you to argue what is best - it's to help others understand what their software needs are to have a good editorial experience.
They ask questions (based on the format in the thread), and we give answers.)
Seriously, if you don't start your reply with "I read the above and have a more nuanced question", likely the response will be slower.

2023.06.01 12:13 certless Juniper QFX5100 10G copper ports downrate to 100M or 1000M

We have a problem with Juniper QFX5100 10G-BASE-T ports auto-negotiating at 100M or 1000M with endsystems that have 10G NIC cards. Most 10G links work, but some "downrate" after some time, and some just refuse to come up at all.
Many ports correctly rate at 10G at first, but many don't. Of those that do start at 10G, later some will be down to 1000 Mb/s or even 100 Mb/s. The ports that rate down are pretty random, but there are a few that show consistent rate-downs.
A secondary issue is what is causing these ports to flap to begin with. Every time a port goes down/up, another Auto-negotiate happens and risks re-rating down.
The ports seem to be sticky too. That is, if a 10G port found its way down to 100 Mb/s, plugging in a different endsystem won't help; indeed nothing will get it to recover . Indeed, the logs show a few ports that are frequently re-rating.
I don't know exactly when this started (~10 months ago?) it crept up on us, and seems to span v14, v18 and v21. Now that we're putting the whole network on v21, we'd hoped that would resolve it, but... not yet. It does act differently though.
Here's what we've tried in order to resolve a down-rated port:
Just to complicate things: /valog/messages will show a port going down, then up, down, up, down, and finally settling on a lower rate. Also, there are disconcerting messages that precede a port flap, like this:
May 31 11:19:15 SWITCH fpc1 qsfp-1/0/52 Chan# 2: Rx power low alarm set May 31 11:19:15 SWITCH fpc1 qsfp-1/0/52 Chan# 2: Rx power low warning set May 31 11:19:15 SWITCH fpc1 qsfp-1/0/52 Chan# 3: Rx power low alarm set May 31 11:19:15 SWITCH fpc1 qsfp-1/0/52 Chan# 3: Rx power low warning set May 31 11:19:19 SWITCH fpc1 qsfp-1/0/52 Chan# 2: Rx power low alarm cleared May 31 11:19:19 SWITCH fpc1 qsfp-1/0/52 Chan# 2: Rx power low warning cleared May 31 11:19:19 SWITCH fpc1 qsfp-1/0/52 Chan# 3: Rx power low alarm cleared May 31 11:19:19 SWITCH fpc1 qsfp-1/0/52 Chan# 3: Rx power low warning cleared May 31 11:19:50 SWITCH mib2d[2256]: SNMP_TRAP_LINK_DOWN: ifIndex 814, ifAdminStatus up(1), ifOperStatus down(2), ifName xe-3/0/46 May 31 11:19:53 SWITCH mib2d[2256]: SNMP_TRAP_LINK_UP: ifIndex 814, ifAdminStatus up(1), ifOperStatus up(1), ifName xe-3/0/46
Or this:

(captured from a QFX5100 running 21.4R3-S2.3 )
I'm sure this isn't complete; there are many sets of log messages like this, mostly with the same two or three ports.
Is it possible that something in the power flow is bumping bits with the auto-neg?
How can you troubleshoot the Auto-neg process to pin down what the problem is?
Any ideas? Help Thanks!

2023.06.01 11:49 Superteletubbies64 Superteletubbies64’s May Metroidvania roundup (finished)

Doing my own roundup inspired by wildfire just for fun and sharing opinions I guess.

For the record, here is some background info about my preferences with the genre and other things: I prefer the Castlevania side of the genre, RPG elements and such but I generally enjoy most types of MVs. I am also a patient gamer and rarely buy games shortly after release , I prefer waiting for a sale instead. And the only thing I have for gaming is a potato laptop which means I generally won’t be able to play higher-end MVs (thank god pixel art is common in the genre) and I am usually more comfortable with playing on keyboard than with a controller (I know, I’m weird)

I also try to make it more quick cuz I’m not that good at constructive criticism and don’t have all day. Honestly the main purpose of this post is sharing some brief thoughts about the games and whether I’d recommend it or not.

***Valdis Story: Abyssal City*** Dropped it over a year ago cuz I heard it has permanent missables and I hate those, and boss rewards based on a ranking that you can’t refight, on top of controls feeling a little janky and not fully rebindable (can’t use Shift which I like to use for dashing or ranged attacks) Tried to get into it again with AutoHotkey and a guide for the missables. I stopped caring about the boss ranking rewards tho, just beating the boss is good enough for me. I got used to the controls quicky, they weren’t as bad as I remembered.

As a MV with RPG elements it was right up my alley, however I like it a little less when I have to worry about allocating stat points and choosing stuff in skill trees. It’s not a soulslike tho. It’s very combo-heavy and increases your xp multiplier and boss ranking if you get good combos. But I kinda suck at that kind of thing. I was still able to scrape by on Normal difficulty, which is the easiest difficulty and it has several harder difficulties. It also has 3 other playable characters with different moveset and skills but I could only stomach one playthrough really.

This game has several major problems that some might find a big deal and some might not mind as much, I already mentioned the missables. If you don’t use a guide or happen to stumble upon something yourself before progressing the story too far you might permanently lose access to NPCs that can trade you items or upgrade equipement. On top of that, there is a limited amount of some resources so spending them on an item or upgrade can potentially lock you out of something else you might need more without even knowing. It has a level cap and not enough available skill points to unlock the whole skill tree which is kinda annoying but not a big deal if your build is servicable enough. Speaking of the level cap you will probably reach it without even trying unless you skip a lot of stuff. The map will only show the area you are currently in which makes it kinda annoying when you get a new key or ability and don’t remember which places are now newly accessible. iirc there are also several hidden mechanics that you probably have to look up such as an item that will only drop if you have enough luck. There is also no indicator for how many chests you have remaining and even though I followed a guide to wrap up the chest hunting at the end I still got only 99% and I couldn’t be bothered to search again

Overall it is clearly a very combat focused MV and kinda unique for the genre, it’s not for everyone.

***Monster Sanctuary*** Another game that I didn’t really gel with at first and dropped and revisited recently. It just got its final content update, they’re moving on to their next game Aethermancer which I’m not as interested in bc it’s a roguelike, it’s also not a MV. It added some welcome quality of life improvement such as a % of rooms explored of each biome but no new content for my existing playthrough, it just added a new game mode and I’m not really into second playthroughs.

It took a while forme to get used to it again but at one point it started to REALLY clicked and I really enjoyed it until I finished everything, Keep in mind tho that it’s a turn-based monster taming RPG first and a MV second, I never really felt a MV itch being scratched but if you care about turn based combat it might be worth a try. It is challenging and requires you to really think about which skills to choose for your monsters, which is what made me drop the game at first. It really gets more interesting later on when you get access to more skills for your monsters. The ability gating is connected to the monsters you get, if you get a new monster from a new biome it might have an ability you didn’t have yet, allowing you to access more areas. In fact this game might have the highest amount of different ability gates out of any MV. Most of them aren’t required for story progression tho, just for getting access to optional loot and secret monsters. The game gets a bit non-linear later on but then becomes linear again in the endgame.

Overall it’s a very solid game for turn based combat fans and I really enjoyed the 40 or so hours I got out of it, although it’s not really a traditional MV experience.

***Depths of Sanity*** I got this from a bundle and it has a lot of positive reception on this sub so I was really excited for it. It’s the most recent in the subgenre of underwater MVs afaik. I played on Hard mode, which I rarely do for games but it was totally manageable in this game for 100% completionists.

The submarine controls were pretty good, it was nice to be able to use the mouse to control its direction. The combat was kinda meh and some bosses can be a little frustrating to fight, they can also drag out a bit. The submarine moves slowly but it improves later on iirc. Clearly a lot of inspiration was taken from Super Metroid down to enemies dropping health and ammo and other things that were clearly inspired by Metroid and such. As someone who leans more on the Castlevania side this is why I wasn’t super enthusiastic about the game at first, I’m not really a fan of horror either, but I do enjoy most types of MVs regardless and this was no exception. The game was also a lot less disturbing than I expected (a lot less than Blasphemous really)

The biggest disppointment about this game was that it was very linear. There are some side paths that lead to secrets but you’re mostly following a linear path from biome to biome. This game is also notable for being more story-focused than the average MV. It was a somewhat compelling story with psychological horror but not everyone cares much about story in MVs. Kinda wish checkpoints would be a little more common too.

Took me a little over 12 hours at first and it was really enjoyable, I can say that my expectations for this game were met.

***Aquaria*** This one is a forgotten classic. Didn’t know it existed until a few years ago and it seems to be the first ever underwater MV and one of the earliest examples of indie MVs along with the more popular La-Mulana (MSX) and Cave Story to some extent. I do wonder why this game didn’t get more popular. Being a collab between Derek Yu of Spelunky fame and Alec Howolka who is sadly not with us. So does this game still hold up? I wanted to find out.

So I dropped this game twice before. Once almost 2 years ago, again a few months after that, my main problem was getting lost and not finding any upgrades, and also having trouble with the combat. I was inspired by Depths of Sanity to revisit this game btw. So I switched to mouse movement and it felt a lot better actually. The problem of lack of upgrades persisted tho. There are a few health upgrades, unlockable pets (familiars) of which you can only have 1 active at a time, and costumes some of which have passive abilities but they seem to only work for the base form so they’re useless most of the time basically. So basically the only real optional upgrades are health upgrades. In a genre where a lot of the enjoyment comes from exploration and finding new stuff this game kinda fails to deliver on that part. There are some more optional collectibles but most of them do nothing. It also has a cooking system which is really important cuz it provides healing, checkpoints aren’t common and if you die your last save gets reloaded. You can find new recipes but there is also the option to look them up in a guide or something. The form switching can get annoying but there are hotkeys for switching forms without ever having to sing, I didn’t know this either before finding it on the interent but it did improve my experience with this game. The combat is honestly pretty bad, think Ori 1’s combat but even worse. However you can mash a key instead of mash clicking which is a little more helpful for your wrist. This game is clearly more exporation than combat focused and most creatures outside of bosses won’t attack you. Bosses can be frustrating but with enough healing items they’ll be less troublesome, you might want to use a guide for some of these tho cuz some of these can’t be damaged with the usual attack and have less obvious methods of dealing damage to them. The endgame was also very linear and repetitive

I’d say while this game is enjoyable it’s not for everyone and didn’t hold up that well actually. It’s a shame that the composer is no longer with us cuz the music was really, really good. The game was also longer than the average MV, a bit over 20 hours for 100%.

So basically most of this was just revisiting stuff from my backlog, nothing new cuz I’m a patient gamer, but the summer sale is next month so I’ll probably grab some new stuff then.

2023.06.01 11:48 Defeated-Husband Thoughts on available and unknown "wargear"

Wargear (relics) thoughts. Likely not how they are going to be in 10th but doesn't hurt to imagine.
Selections available: Incursion- 2 wargear Strikeforce- 4 wargear Onslaught- 6 wargear
Questoris -RFBC: +3 more shots (also for rapidfire), ap2, lose blast
It is already aimed at being decent against horde, infantry, elite infantry and light vehicles. This just makes is slightly better. The old relic added more shots and strength so this seemed reasonable. Can now shoot in combat against those little targets.
-Thermal Cannon: +d3 shots, Lethal, lose blast
Lethal makes 6 to hit auto wound, for 90% of units in the game it was likely to wound anyways but why not guarantee a shot or more. Plus can now shoot that titanic unit it is in combat with.
-Avenger Gatlin Cannon: +2 shots, Devastating Wounds
Players usually take Endless Fury and Blessed by the Sacristans so this does basically the same.
-Helm of the Nameless Warrior: Devastating Wounds in melee
Same as it was before.
-Ademantine Knight: Can only be wounded on an unmodified 4, 5 or 6 wound roll (also negates lethal hits [auto wounds])
Inspired by the Warlord Trait of house Vulker plus a little extra. Besides this addition is supposed to be less lethal so make anti-vehicle(walker) weapon actually work for that damage and stop the lasgun auto wound spam (yes I'm salty).
Dominus -Cawl's Wrath Removes Hazardous
Very simple and less risky.
-Traitor's Pyre +6 shots, +1 str
Keeping away from the "ignores Invulnerable saves" plan by GW but gave it 6 extra shots to make it dangerous within those 18"
Armigers -Bastard Helm User and another selected Armiger gain +1 toughness
Stepped away from the original idea and went for the 'tough-skinned insult' direction.
-Hunter of Beast Range & Melee Anti-vehicle3 & Anti-monster3 (wounds on a 3+)
This is inline with the fact it is hunting large game that its weapons normally cannot wound on a 3, 4 or 5 at times (depends on the weapon profile). An argument can be made for just Melee on 2+ instead.
-Strike and Shield Only can be hit on an unmodified 4, 5 or 6 & Armor save of 2+ in melee only
Kind of the same but with an Armour of the Sainted Ion way. Still powerful in the right situation as before.
////// All of this is due to thoughts and dream. In addition to not knowing 10th's wargear situation for Knights and hoping something along those lines.
Looking for thoughts from others with imagination on the subject. Looking for similar ideas and suggestions. Aiming for more wargear for Questoris than Armigers to reduce the thought/need for Armiger spam.
Not actual rules for scrutiny so any rule lawyers can just go beat on people that are screwing up actual game play rules.

2023.06.01 11:47 SimCompanies Future Contacts

The SC dev team did a great work going thru a lot of technological debt we had, we were also able to remove ALGO. And I believe it's finally time to add new game mechanics to the game, to make it richer :)

Let's start discussing the "Future Contracts", as described here: https://www.simcompanies.com/pages/future-development/
"
Sick of locking in a supplier that then pulls out unexpectedly? A feature like this has been requested a lot.
The idea is that you would be able to negotiate a long-term supplieconsumer relationship that is backed by the game and provides some security.
Details will be worked out as the implementation comes closer. But the idea is that both parties agree on future contract terms: resource amount and price. The contract would be then automatically sent and accepted each day. There would be a notice period (most likely 3 days) in which either party can cancel the contract.
This would also alleviate some of the clickings we all have to do every day sending/accepting the same contracts.
If either party cannot fulfill the contract at the specific time, there are few options for how to force them including producer auto-buying resources on the exchange to send the contract, or consumer liquidating assets to be able to pay for the incoming goods.
I think this would allow both producers and consumers to get better security and stability for their pipeline, it will also allow players to “bet” on future price movements.

There is a lot of aspects that are not finalized yet. I will start threads for each.
Note: I want to experiemnt with using reddit, instead of forum we use usually, I like the threads and voting mechanics reddit has. We'll see if this concept works.

2023.06.01 11:25 Thermatix Is there a crate for converting between variolous pkcs formats?

So I looked into how axum does deals with TLS and found the RustlsConfig modual in axum_server, the issue is that if I understand it, according this it only works with pkcs#8 or pkcs#1 format but I might only have access to a pkcs#12 format file.
So I was wondering, is there a rust crate or crates that I could use to convert between any pkcs format to the one specific one I need?
P.S. Yes, I know axum_server supports openssl but If I can not use an external dependency then I'd rather do that.
EDIT: Specifically what I'm asking for, is if there's a crate that can auto detect which format (pkcs) the file is using and then convert to the specified one you want.

“Are you sure about this?” Comms called through the short-wave, Willin’s headset crackling only slightly louder than the pouring rain. It was distorted and covered the timbre of his voice, but it worked.
He checked the batteries on his guns, both pistol and rifle topped off. The pistol was secured into the holster on his hip, the rifle slung across his chest over the heat-plate designed to dissipate any plasma that might hit it. His armour wouldn’t do the best against kinetic armaments—it was never designed to go against a railgun—but military personnel were rarely given those anyway. Too inefficient.
“As sure as I can be,” he replied, checking his harness. Two spare batteries, four ration packs, water, the transmitter that fed into his headset, some assorted tools for unlikely scenarios, and a knife tucked into his boot. The footwear was typically used for traversing hostile environments or boarding operations—the material thick and cumbersome—but it worked just fine for him. He had gotten used to wearing it.
He opted not to bother with the helmet. It would limit his senses in a place like this, the EW field making even the most basic function disorienting. Tech adjusted the physical scope on her rifle, though her favourite weapons were the two Compact Anti-personnel and Rapid Discharge systems she had attached to her hips—the CARDs being designed to switch between rapid-shot clusters to suppress a wide area, and a single-fire mode better suited to more precise requirements. The larger weapon was mostly for show—there was hardly a reason to carry an Anti-Material Rifle to begin with—but it didn’t hurt to counter possible armour.
The purple-furred female’s true weaponry rested both on and under her armour, her augments and the equipment linked to them making her a mobile Electronic Warfare platform. Though much of her abilities would be limited in scope here, she was still more than capable of supporting him. He would be relying on her to dissuade any action against them, as well as using her modifications to keep them in the loop.
She looked like an oddly-coloured female, but she was closer to a walking EMP and scanner rolled into one.
“Short-wave is stable, if a bit distorted,” Willin continued, flicking some of the water off his fur. “Tech will try to keep the signal clean, but no promises. Comms, Nav, you two are keeping the craft warm and ready.”
“Understood, Leader,” Nav replied, their androgynous voice warbling slightly. “Estimated time-frame?”
“Long enough for you two to figure out the ration-packets.”
Comms laughed over the headset. “Nav would rather lick the floors.”
“Just don’t get too distracted with each other while we’re gone,” Willin teased through his smirk, Tech rolling her eyes at him.
“The same could be said for you, Leader. Don’t get too caught up making ‘friends’ with the locals.”
“Or Tech,” Nav added dryly. Their tone hovering between annoyance at the jibes regarding Comms and Nav’s occasional fling, and amusement at the suggestion Tech was interested in pursuits of the flesh with the crew at all. She might be, but she had a habit of dropping the thermostat of whichever room belonged to whoever made the comment, so it was safer to just assume she was off-limits.
“Cold room,” Tech responded casually as she adjusted her audio interface, Nav sighing loud enough for it to be picked up. Comms laughed in a way that suggested he was thankful for Tech’s assistance in ensuring Nav would be seeking a warm bed for the moon. Willin shook his head, hoping that they didn’t need to extract in any particular hurry.
It was easier to get in the air when your two remaining crew weren’t otherwise occupied.
“Batteries green. Supplies green. Short-wave sufficient,” he reported, receiving confirmations from Tech. “Operation is to establish communication with local Grand Hunter and receive compliance, information on other packs, and facilitate reintroduction to structure.”
“Alternative is to report pack as non-compliant and pursue other Grand Hunters,” Tech added, repeating what they went over earlier. “My augments are heavily limited, but we should be able to deal with it.”
“Are you sure that you two can manage hostilities?” Comms asked, his voice faltering slightly. Though they had been assigned to the scout craft at random, they had grown rather close as a unit over their time. If it wasn’t for the professional obligations prohibiting it, they might have all decided to move into a den together—they were that intimately familiar with each other. As it was, they would likely be reassigned to serve elsewhere after their current mission was complete.
Such was the life of those like them.
“Tech has more equipment under her fur than our ship has installed—weakened or not,” Willin assured the male. He shot a pointed look at the female. “She’s also under direct order to return in the event things become too dangerous. Alone, if required.”
Tech scowled, but nodded anyway. Comms grunted their understanding. “Leader?”
“Yeah?”
A moment of pause. “Nothing. Come back, okay?”
“Will do my best, Comms. Nav, keep an eye on him.”
“It will be done, Leader. Stay safe.”
He placed a paw to his headset, hovering over the button to cut the transmission. “You too.”
“Ready to go?” Tech asked, slinging her AMR over her back and re-securing her CARDs. Willin double checked his auxiliary equipment, hoping that he didn’t need to use any of it. Nodding, he gestured for her to follow, the two leaving behind the craft to slip into the woods.

“Something up?” he asked, raising a brow at Tech. The female was fidgety, restless and scanning their surroundings more than required. She might have heard something, but the thunderous hiss of rain drowned out most everything—it was part of the reason they waited for it.
She wore a reluctant expression, her eyes flickering to the silver and gold trees for a moment. “Prox’ is going wild.”
“Proximity sensor effected?” he queried, feeling the weight of his weapons tug on his body. Tech nodded.
“It’s weak. I think the ‘spike is messing with it—along with everything else—but it’s reporting…a lot.”
“Moving?”
She shook her head, a paw twitching over a CARD. “Not until we go past them.”
He joined her in looking around, shaking off water uselessly. “Wildlife?”
“This stealthy?”
Willin shrugged. “The message mentioned that it was different.”
“Details would have been nice,” she grumbled in return, waving her paw to get him moving again, though she kept one on her weapon.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
“Visual,” he reported, lowering the rifle from his shoulder. “Anything?”
Tech shook her head, still on a swivel. “Prox’ is still lit up, but at this point it might be less distracting to shut it off.”
“Keep it. Rather have it telling us things are around all the time than miss something big because we got annoyed.”
She sighed, tapping her audio interface twice to change the song she had playing. “What do you see?”
“Low fences, but dense buildings. Lots of traffic despite the weather. Looks like they’re used to it. Think they know we’re here?”
“Doubt it. Gear?”
He shouldered his weapon to look through the scope. “No guns, but lots of melee. Armour seems to be a mix of leather and metal. Can’t say what kind.”
Tech pulled her AMR to look, Willin shifting to keeping lookout. “No guns…” She shot him a look. “I’m not sure if that’s reassuring, or worrying.”
He shrugged. “The less I need to get shot at with, the better.”
“The goal is to not give them reason to.”
“Well, I can’t be perfect all the time.”
Tech laughed, the banter easing her nerves. “You’d have to start, Leader.”
With a roll of his eyes, he patted her shoulder with the back of his paw. “Let’s get moving. Diplomacy doesn’t do itself.”
The purple-furred female sighed, likely biting back another quip as she nodded.

It went better than expected. So far, anyway.
They had approached the settlement proper, received what could be described as a ‘lukewarm’ welcome, then were told to follow several Lilhuns donning black leather and far too many daggers. Their escorts kept a close eye on the guns that they brought, but no one had made any comments about them yet. It was encouraging, but also worrying.
“Still nothing?” he muttered, quiet enough to not be heard by the others, but loud enough for Tech. She seemed hesitant, glancing over to one of the taller structures as they passed through, but gave a subtle shrug.
“Static is messing with my augments,” she grumbled. “Could be none, could be a few snipers. I can’t tell.”
He exhaled heavily. It was a bit of a blessing that her modifications were working at all, but it was easy enough to see that she felt bare without all the little tweaks she had gotten used to.
Willin never actually got the chance to learn all the tricks she was capable of—it was against policy to ask and she never saw fit to talk about it—but of the ones he did know; her proximity sensor, jammer, and ship integration were her favourites.
It was hard to board her ship if she knew where you were, locked up your gun, then spaced the room you were in, all without closing her game. He was pretty sure she was disappointed that she had only gotten to do that once.
“New ones, the Grand Hunter will see you soon,” an escort informed them as they drew near the Atmospheric Entry Craft that acted as a den for the one they were here to meet. They didn’t know the name yet, nor were they given the chance to do more than say why they were there. He had gotten as far as saying he was from the United Military before the people welcoming them scurried off to get someone else.
He busied himself by inspecting the buildings leading up to the AEC, some being a respectable three floors. Newer constructions seemed to differ in method, the beams a charred ashen colour rather than the same odd silver wood. Why they had elected to burn the materials, he didn’t know, but it seemed to be what they decided to do.
A surprising amount of the population carried a curved stick over their shoulder, the ends tied together by a string. Some attached lengths of a similar material to their leathers, one end made with a small loop as it dangled. The catch they carried to what looked to be a hunter’s lodge suggested it was used during their hunting, but he couldn’t fathom how.
Dragging his attention from the crowd, he eyed the large shuttle.
The massive main doors looked to have been damaged, though a structure had been attached since, leaving the stuck-open entrance to seem less like the result of a hard landing. The gentle hum of the internal power generation was absent, the required energy for what was still working being drawn from large solar panels that had been installed into skylights in the ceiling. The cloud-laden weather dimmed the light that illuminated the inside, but it was serviceable enough. Whatever power was produced, it was being funnelled somewhere that wasn’t servicing the majority of the craft.
Wide halls were populated by Lilhuns and spotted with doorways, the majority propped open since they were programmed to shut in the event of a power outage, lest explosive decompression eject whomever was occupying the room—along with anyone nearby in the hallway, should they be so unlucky.
It was customized, that much was obvious. Several rooms that would have been sparsely populated with anything other than beds were instead modified into training rooms and gyms. Densely packed barracks contrasted against large storage areas filled with various goods, pelts and metal weapons lining various shelves. Newer accommodations had been installed for more of those curved staffs, smaller pointed sticks stacked in piles nearby.
They progressed deeper and deeper into the confines of the shuttle, the common sight of the local pack trickling away, none seeming to have business this far in. Gruffer and more observant Lilhuns became the only people they saw while the hallways narrowed into tighter quarters, what might have fit cargo vehicles now only allowing a few shoulder widths, doorways becoming less common. The wary eyes and darkened clothing paired with the occasional dyed fur of those they passed—black seeming to be the dominant colour.
“In here,” an escort grunted, jabbing their jaw towards an isolated door. A paw was held out as they tried to step forward. “Weapons.”
Tech’s paw twitched towards one of her CARDs, the act of Willin relinquishing his pistol and rifle stopping her from snapping it into rapid-fire and burning the air with plasma. She glared at him for a few seconds before doing the same, the escort smirking.
“You will have them returned. The Grand Hunter is not so desolate as to pilfer the possessions of those who come merely to speak.”
He wasn’t worried about it. The guns were coded to them and Tech could fry them if it came down to it. Well, he wasn’t sure if she could do it with the warp-spike messing with things, but the lock should be enough. The knife in his boot went unnoticed, so it wasn’t like he was completely unarmed anyway.
Tech followed suit, subtly glaring at him the whole time. He shrugged, there wasn’t much they could do about it. They were the ones seeking an audience with the most influential person here.
Satisfied, the escort pulled the door open, the quiet whirring of the unpowered servos accenting the air. They revealed a larger office adorned with little but the most base necessity, a wood and steel desk covered in papers, a chair seeming to be the only extravagant item within—though it was purely for the ergonomics, rather than any aesthetic reason—and the male sat upon it was leafing through a collection of documents while twirling an orange needle-like object in his paw.
The distinct lack of any guards to protect the Grand Hunter was surprising, but that took a back seat to the owner of the room.
Dark grey fur, a clouded eye that retained its sharpness, scars peeking beyond the confines of his leather clothing—the thick hides sporting metal scales sewn onto them. An ear flicked in their direction, the membrane cut at several points. He placed down his papers, leaning forward in his chair as he clasped his paws on the desk, a friendly smile donned that failed to convey anything but malice.
“Greetings, new ones,” the male offered in a cheery tone, the low rumble and gravelled texture of his voice carrying both humour and curiosity. He focused on Tech for a moment, his eyes narrowing over the affable expression before he regarded both of them equally. He gestured to the seating opposite of his desk some small distance away. Close enough to meet, yet far enough that it was made abundantly clear who was in charge.
Willin bowed his head politely, walking the distance and sitting where he was provided. Tech followed suit after a brief hesitation, her unfocused eyes snapping to him with frustration. His raised brow was met with a longer blink—her augments were reporting something that made no sense again.
“Now then,” the dark grey-furred male said, moving some of the documents on his desk to a stack. “What might bring you to me?”
“Forgive me, Grand Hunter…” Willin opened, prodding for a name.
The male simply maintained his attentive posture instead of providing. Willin adjusted his sleeve and decided it was more important to continue than dig for information that he could get by asking anyone who lived in the settlement.
“As for why we’re here; we represent the United Military, responding to a distress call. We have forwarded the request and were tasked with ascertaining the state of affairs before the fleets arrive to assist.”
The Grand Hunter nodded. “Yes, that much I could have surmised from your clothing alone.”
Tech raised a brow as the dark green-furred soldier forced a smile. “Of course. More specifically, we would like to speak with you about what you know of the others of your station, as well as discuss the reintegration of your pack.”
The smile of the grey-furred male widened. “You wish to make a deal?”
Tech’s gaze flickered to several points in the room, her brow furrowing as she jettisoned a huff in frustration. Willin took a moment to consider his plan of action, nodding when he didn’t see the harm.
“I believe we can come to an arrangement. Within reason, of course.”
The Grand Hunter chuckled as the needle he was playing with disappeared at a flick of his wrist. “Of course, of course. Deal, agreements, arrangements, contracts.” The emphasis on the final item tickled something in the back of Willin’s mind. “Itemize it. What do you seek of me? It is rather disorganized to ask without quantifying, no? So…messy.”
“We want information on the other packs. Who leads them, number of members, where their settlements are,” Tech stated tersely, ignoring the disapproving glance Willin gave. “We also need to work on integrating those packs back into the UM—preferably with yourself setting precedent.”
The male’s face grew thoughtful. “As well as forgiveness, though that will cost quite the amount.”
Willin frowned. “Forgiveness? For not knowing your name?”
The Grand Hunter returned a blank stare, a dangerous grin spreading slowly. “Tell me, new ones, do you know of Avalon?”
Tech’s face hardened, her answer slow and cautious. “We do, though only through description.”
The male’s voice fell low. Quiet, yet powerful. His elbows on the table suddenly felt like a far greater threat than any armament. “Do you know the debt your superiors have incurred?”
“I don’t believe we have even had the chance to introduce ourselves,” Willin interjected, noticing Tech’s discomfort, her eyes darting around the room nervously.
“You need not,” the Grand Hunter remarked smugly. “You are forbidden from giving your names, no? Locked behind titles of station, merged and scattered at the whims of your masters. Soldiers who do not exist, yet sit within my office.”
Tech pawed for a CARD, forgetting that she had been disarmed at the door. Willin felt the weight of his knife pull on his boot. The male chuckled as he leaned back in his chair.
“But, given that you did not flee, I will give the benefit of the doubt regarding the debt. Though, it will make offering you more than your lives difficult.”
“What debt?” Willin pressed, receiving a flippant wave of the male’s paw.
“It matters not. I have more pressing matters than hearing why I should join the ranks of that which I supersede.”
“Matters such as?”
The Grand Hunter raised a brow. “You are being given the opportunity to leave whole, new one. I advise you to accept.”
Willin shook his head, ignoring Tech’s pointed look. “We need information. From the message we received, not everyone is as well off as you, and we intend to amend that. What can we trade for it?”
The male clasped his paws over his stomach, passively humouring them. “What do you offer? You may seek the details of the others, but I am not inclined to merely supply it.”
“Supplies, priority cooperation when the UM arrives.”
A chortle sounded out. “We are self sufficient. Such matters little.”
“Is there anything you would want?”
The Grand Hunter smirked, placing a paw on the table as the other produced another needle—this one a more yellow hue, the specifics of its shape blurring as it spun between his claws. “Your superiors asked me a favour. Data. How far could they push the Lilhun body before ligaments broke, the mind following shortly after? How twisted can we shape the psyche of kits?”
The temperature of the room seemed to chill, a twitch of the male’s lips pulling his muzzle into a slight snarl.
“They sought my kit to participate, after a time. Unfortunately, her will aligned—despite my reservations. In return, she would be wiped from the records. Ephemeral, never having existed to begin with. Never suffering the whims of those who became drunk on sending my Blades to their end, never finding their other.” The gravel to his voice turned to broken glass. “Yet your betters violated the agreement. Broke the contract. They pulled her into your service, hid the fact from me, and had the gall to fabricate a story to coincide. Were it not for a particular series of favours I was owed, I would have been still planet-side in our system instead of here.”
The dark grey-furred male smirked, his demeanour relaxing. “It seems she has found what she sought. Without need for my meddling, at that. A shame, really. I had several competent males selected—those who could wield what she had become. Those who might give her what her blood-mother failed to gain.” He paused for a moment, a fraction of longing piercing through the scarred exterior. “Regardless, all I would have wanted has been gained. She is content, and I am crafting that which shall accept her when she is ready. Your military will only muddy that which I have achieved, were they to dig their claws into my work.”
“Their actions are separate from ours,” Willin countered, thankful that the impending conflict had seemingly resolved itself.
“Grand Hunter,” Tech addressed the male, an eye flicking to the ceiling for a fraction. “We were able to see that there are a fair number of settlements, but we need the information to do our job.”
“And your task would interfere with my own,” the grey-furred male reiterated, a polite—if bored—expression returned.
“What if we could ensure that it didn’t?”
The disinterest in the male’s eyes slipped into curiosity. “You seek to trade sovereignty for information? You hold such power?”
“We do,” Willin confirmed, surprised that Tech would offer. “Though you would be disregarding the support of the United Military, we could arrange an agreement of territory on this planet. It’s not as if we could populate the entirety of it within several of our lifetimes anyway.”
The Grand Hunter stared, each moment more uncomfortable than the last. Eventually, he smirked. “Information and the disregarding of the sins your betters inflicted upon me, for sovereignty…and a singular favour.”
“Favour?”
“Indeed,” he replied confidently, reaching into his desk to produce writing implements and paper. “You see, my kit has pledged herself to someone of curiosity. I thought him worthless. Weak. Yet he has performed a duty befitting her Sheath, and I suppose I should reward it.”
Scribbling ceased, impeccable penmanship crafting a contract that was slid forward on the tabletop. He continued after gesturing for Willin to approach.
“Seek him last, give him what information you have gathered, then heed his request,” the male said through his smirk. “I do so look forward to seeing what becomes of it.”
The dark green-furred male perused the document, stipulations and all finely articulated, as if the Grand Hunter lived and breathed transaction. A few points needed to be addressed, mostly possible abuse cases within the fine print, but it was surprisingly fair. There was some worry about the otherwise excessive cost of breaking the contract, but Willin figured that it would be reasonable enough considering the circumstances.
Signing, he gestured Tech to do the same as a witness, the two of them representing the UM for all intents and purposes. It was hardly the first time they had made agreements like this, though trading such a large area on a planet they held no prior influence on was a first.
The Grand Hunter confirmed the terms and conditions with them one last time, smiling when they both nodded.
“Good! Now, for what you seek.” The male rummaged through a few drawers, producing a series of papers that were lined over the desk towards them. “The non-aggression treaty, as well as what my Blades have observed from their scouting.”
Willin read over each, the documents sorted by Grand Hunter, then by who they had under them. His brow raised at a few reports, but questions could wait. The male seemed happy to let them read, so he wanted to take advantage of it. Tech scanned over everything when Willin was done, her augments allowing her to commit the information to a digital memory for future reference back on the ship.
“There are quite a few names marked with this,” Tech noted aloud, pointing to a symbol next to several of the Grand Hunters and their extended packs. The grey-furred male nodded.
“Those have been eliminated or subsumed.”
Willin frowned, parsing the documents again. Mi’low, Toril, and a few others were designated as such. Looking through, only about four seemed to be free of the distinction. He looked questioningly to the male, a grin returned with a separate stack of paper, titled with a single name.
Hasen.
The notation was rather dense, though not in information that Willin was expecting. Instead of settlements or High and Low Hunters, it was laden with mentions of those belonging to the previously marked Grand Hunters. His eyes widened as he connected the dots.
“Hasen is trying to be a Master Hunter.”
“Correct,” the male confirmed cheerily. “He is integrating other packs into his command and eliminating those who refuse. It has become quite an issue as of late.”
Though Grand Hunters could be assigned the moniker by owning territory and a willing pack—assuming they have the force required to defend it—a Master Hunter must own magnitudes more. It was typically achieved by integrating Grand Hunter packs and their subservients through mutual benefit, but taking it by force was a lesser used method.
Given that he had already either taken or purged several, it wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination to assume he would press it to include here.
Willin heard Tech curse under her breath, their promise of sovereignty obligating them to interfere. To allow a member of the military—stranded or not—free action against the grey-furred male’s territory would be the same as endorsing it, now that they were aware. It would be hostility by the UM in all but name, and the consequences that had seemed somewhat extreme before now hung over their heads like an executioner’s axe.
A dark, deep chuckle broke the two of them out of thought. “Contracts, new ones,” the Grand Hunter started, a cold Void pooling in his eyes, “are not to be thought trivial. Do not break them.”
“It was a trap,” Tech snarled, jabbing a claw at the report in her paw. “You set us up.”
“Did I?” the male asked innocently. “You offered self-governance, non-interference, and non-aggression.”
“You withheld information!”
The Grand Hunter smiled, a shiver sent down Willin’s spine. “You agreed without doing proper research.”
Willin held a paw out to stop Tech from storming the male. “The contract is signed, Tech.”
“It’s invalid!” she snarled at him, receiving a cold look in return.
“Do you want to be the one to tell command that we allowed damn near genocide of a crew we were here to assist, just because we were too stubborn to adhere to an agreement?” he countered calmly. “This ‘Hasen’ is wiping almost a year's worth of survival, botanical, and every other specialized knowledge gained, just because he wants to control a section of a planet. This doesn’t change anything, it just means we know what we’re going into.”
“I like him,” the Grand Hunter opined with a grin. “He sees the value that my proposition offers.”
“What’s stopping us from just tearing up the contract right now and leaving you to your fate?” Tech barked.
“Your companions in your craft—quite the ship, might I add—would be a notable starting point.”
The two of them paused, eyes widened. The dark grey-furred male laughed again.
“Your proximity sensor has been reporting since you landed, no?” he asked, pointing to the equipment on Tech’s harness. “It must have been rather vexing, yes? Is it the warp-spike? Is it some army of the unknown? The uncertainty of never confirming what it tells you. The whispers of doubt that follow.”
“I’m surprised you recognized what it was,” Willin replied with a level tone. He didn’t like where this was going. The male offered a smile.
“Wildlife here is especially elusive. Skittish. Ceasing all motion while predators are near and silencing themselves.” Tech and Willin exchanged a glance as the male waved a paw dismissively. “It makes for rather intensive training for my Blades. To hunt without disturbing them. My kit was a natural in such regard, but others have slowly approached such a threshold.”
He folded his paws on the desk. “Your ship is currently being observed by them now, weaponry trained on the defences you thought so adequate. Surely you noticed the lack of guns, yes?”
“The distress message mentioned the lack of them was due to how urgent evacuation was,” Willin added cautiously.
“Yes, quite. I made sure to lock the armouries after taking enough to establish my power,” the male confirmed with a half-shrug. “Among those were rifles not dissimilar to the rifle that the purple one there brought with her.” He leaned back in his chair. “Sufficient to pierce the hull and whoever occupies the space behind it, no?”
Tech’s eyes unfocused, snapping to Willin with a fear behind them. The Grand Hunter spun his quill, unconcerned by the events.
“Your short-wave has been temporarily disabled. You can not warn them.”
“Threatening us to compliance?” Willin asked without emotion to his tone. He needed to keep things from escalating.
“Ensuring you understand the consequences of your actions,” the male replied plainly. “When one barters with Avalon, know that breaching such is grounds for death. Of you, and whoever I need to send with you.”
“They didn’t sign this,” Tech argued, kept in line by Willin’s demeanour.
“But you did,” the Grand Hunter returned coldly. “Honour your signature, or regret such in the Void.”
Tech took an enraged step forward, stopped when her throat pressed against a dagger that was slipped in from behind. Willin felt the pressure of a knife to his own.
“Patience, new ones.”
“You took advantage of the interference to sneak assassins into the room?” Willin noted.
“No, my Blades were always here,” the male refuted lazily, nodding at Tech. “She noticed, but was unable to trust what her equipment told her.” He chortled for a moment. “Quite the annoyance, proximity sensors. I feel rather blessed to have the warp-spike rendering them little more than meaningless noise.”
“So this is it? You kill us now, our friends when they refuse to cooperate, then steal what we brought?”
The pressure on his neck faded with a wave of the male’s paw, the assassins being nowhere to be seen.
“Of course not!” the Grand Hunter exclaimed, his voice returning to its affable cadence. “You now know how futile it is to go against me. Fear not, I see no merit in hindering you. As long as you honour your portion of the contract, I will honour mine. It is a certainty that Avalon was founded on.”
Tech rubbed her neck, glancing questioningly at Willin. He gave the male a wary glance, but closed his eyes to concede. They were just going to get everyone killed if they tried to back out of something they had already agreed to.
“Then we have come to an understanding,” the dark grey-furred male announced happily. “As a show of faith, do you have any questions where I might provide clarity?”
The two soldiers glanced at each other, Tech begrudgingly giving Willin the floor. He gestured to the smallest stack of papers. “Who is this? There’s next to nothing about him. Are you withholding information against your contract?”
The Grand Hunter smirked. “That, new ones, is all I could gather from my Blades.”
“You have Lilhuns disappearing in the room a moment after holding a knife to our throats, and they couldn’t scout a settlement?”
“Isn’t it interesting?”
“Enthralling,” Tech commented dryly. The male tapped a claw against his head.
“Think, new ones. What might render my Blades little more than a mild inconvenience?”
Willin’s eyes narrowed. “Other Blades? Better Blades?”
The dark grey-furred male held an expectant smile. “None have been seen, save for my kit.”
“Your kit’s mate is the Grand Hunter? I don’t see one Blade deterring this many,” he admitted, flicking through the pages. Overt, covert, and disguised. None got very far.
“Thus why I believe the male is owed a favour,” the Grand Hunter explained. “I gave them four Blades as a gift. They have become more.” A predatory look of elation cracked through the veneer. “There exists no better Sheath than a Blademaster. Let alone one who surpasses my methods. If she is to succeed me, I would rather no other to accompany her.”
“Says here that he’s an alien,” Willin noted aloud, trying not to voice his surprise. “I’m skeptical.”
“Oh, please do be. It will make hearing about what he asks of you that much more amusing.”
“Any ideas what he might look for from us?” Tech spat, still irritated.
“Oh, I might have an idea,” the male answered cryptically, sliding a small tablet of silver wood across the desk. Willin picked it up to inspect it, two foreign scripts scratched into the surface. With a questioning glance, the Grand Hunter nodded, Willin stashing the tablet into a pouch. “He seeks that which others might not, for reasons as foreign as he himself is. I have little doubt that something related to that trinket will be his wish.”
“Then why visit him last?” the purple-furred female pressed.
“Because it will influence his decision.”
“Which is enough reason for us,” Willin declared with a warning scowl at Tech. She held his gaze before looking away in annoyance.
“Then our meeting is finished,” the male announced, gesturing to the door. It opened, the whirring of servos giving way to the distant ambient chatter of the hallway. Two of the black leather-clad escorts entered the room and awaited them.
“Is there anything we should know that may have not made it to the report about him?” Willin asked before leaving, turning naught but an ear for the response.
The Grand Hunter hummed for a moment. “Do mind your manners surrounding his kit,” he offered. “Or do not, it matters little to me if you survive past honouring the agreement.”
Tech stopped at the doorway, glaring at the male as Willin exited. “We never did get your name.”
His brows raised in interest. “You saw my signature.”
“I would rather hear it from you,” she insisted coolly.
A toothy smile spread over the male’s muzzle. “Grand Hunter Trill; Blademaster of Avalon, Sire of Phantom, and—if I remember correctly—the Weighted Scale, Aspect of Balance.”
“’May he who barter with the Void fear its ire,’” she recited, conviction in her words.
“’Yet he who uphold bathes in its blessing,’ yes,” Grand Hunter Trill replied with a knowing look. “Consider it, new one. To be crushed under the obligations you fail to upkeep, or revel in that which you covet. Do be warned; though I let you and your party leave—” his eye gained a sharp edge. “You are never beyond my influence.”
“May the sun treat you well, Grand Hunter,” she replied tersely, spinning on her pad to leave. Willin glanced back as he waited for her to pass him, seeing nothing but the door closing behind her.
Their weapons were returned, each in the same state as they were confiscated, save for a familiar knife. He scowled as he shifted his footing to reveal that the comforting weight had been removed from his boot. He begrudgingly accepted the blade, tucking it back into the sheath as the Lilhun smirked at him, his mirth at the dark green-furred male’s displeasure evident.
They were escorted out of the shuttle, a pause afforded long enough for Willin to flick up his hood before they continued to the outermost edge of the settlement. As soon as they were outside of the fence, their escorts turned and quickly faded into the buildings.
A crackle came over the headset.
“Leader! Tech! We thought something may have happened,” Comms shouted into the earpiece, genuine worry coating his words.
“Were you unsuccessful?” Nav added, the sound of a small distance between speaker and microphone suggesting they were sharing.
Willin adjusted the strap of his rifle and started walking, Tech following after a lingering glance at the settlement. “We got what we came for, but it might have cost us.”
“It was simply a meeting, no?” Comms asked to clarify.
“If you can call being strung along by an Aspect ‘simple,’ then yes,” Tech growled.
“Aspect?”
“Balance,” Willin provided through a sigh. “Weighted Scale.”
“Receive your heart’s desire at a heavy sacrifice,” Nav commented after a moment, likely referencing something. “What did you give them?”
“Sovereignty and a favour to be paid out to another Grand Hunter.”
“That does not seem too unreasonable,” Comms voiced curiously.
“We’ll talk about it when we get back. I have a feeling that the hole was dug too deep to see the bottom quite yet.”
“There’s a battle brewing,” Tech notified the crew, adjusting her audio interface. For once, it was completely silent. “We got dragged into it.”
The short-wave fell silent.
“What do we do?” Comms questioned quietly, the crackle of the distortion pitching his voice slightly.
Willin snorted, exhaling slowly.
“We made a deal with Avalon, Comms. We honour the contract.”

A/N: Folded and made a patreon. You can do the thing there, but i don't have anything to offer. Gonna move the rare AI Gen character art to it though, since it's the best i can offer.

2023.06.01 10:55 Other_Exercise Personal financial tip: Inflation on optional, discretionary purchases is an opportunity to save money, not spend more

Today's post is thanks to Costa Coffee, who this morning have put up their prices from £3.00 to £3.15 for a cappuccino from the self-serve petrol station machine, and have also now sent me an email saying that from August I'll need to buy 10 drinks to get a free one, not 8.
Now, I'm sure Costa have some very clever people working for them, although I now no longer feel so happy about buying their drinks as much.
Thankfully, I already have all the facilities, like a grinder and frother, in my own home to make my own coffee.
Thus, this price hike has served to mentally jolt me from my rather wasteful auto-pilot state of mind.
For the record, I love buying coffees while out, and will continue to do so on weekends and times when I know it will spark joy, so to speak.
But a mediocre machine-made coffee every day out of a sense of habit? Don't need it.
Any other tips?

2023.06.01 10:13 Walk1000Miles Karma Overview

It's so very important to learn about karma.
It can be confusing.
Karma isn't necessary for using Reddit, but it certainly helps. Be patient at first, and don't get discouraged. Accumulating karma is a long-term task, but one that gets easier the more familiar you become with Reddit.
This is What I Have Learned:
A Redditors karma is a reflection on how much they have contributed to the Reddit community. Or how active they are on Reddit.
■ You can have an account that is seven years old and contribute posts / comments once a year.
■ You can have an account for two years and contribute posts / comments every day.
■ The karma for each account will be different due to the activity on each account.
To Earn Karma
■ Make a comment on the posts / comments of other Redditors. Fellow Redditors will sometimes give you awards for your contributions. Sometimes they will not.
■ Publish and discuss your own posts.
• post a link to a newspaper / magazine article;
• post pictures;
• post links to a YouTube video;
• post interviews or questionnaires;
• ask a question; and
• pick a topic you are familiar with and write about it.
■ Reward people for their comments (Reddit will sometimes reward you with karma - depending on the reward you give);
■ Receive some karma on your birthday (your cake day / which is the day you signed up for your Reddit account) from fellow Redditors. Watch what others do. Sometimes they will prepare elaborate memes, make jokes, prepare gifs, etc., so that people notice their special day.
Types of Karma
There are four different types of karma. When you click on your username, you will see a breakdown of Post Karma, Comment Karma, Awardee Karma and Awarder Karma.
(1) Post Karma:
You are awarded post karma for posting (re: articles, questions, pictures, videos, recipes, etc.). You also receive post karma for sharing / forwarding posts of other Redditors.
■ Your post karma increases when people upvote anything that you post / share / forward.
■ Your post karma decreases when people downvote anything that you post / share / forward.
(2) Comment Karma:
You are awarded comment karma when Reddit users upvote your comments, and you lose karma when they downvote your comments.
(3) Awarder Karma:
You receive awarder karma from Reddit for awarding the posts / comments of fellow Redditors.
(4) Awardee Karma:
You receive awardee karma from other Redditors reacting to your posts / comments by rewarding you with an award.
If a Redditor Receives a Lot of Down Votes?
A Redditors karma will decrease (down arrow). It is possible to receive zero (0) or negative (-) karma balances.
If a Redditor Receives a Lot of Upvotes?
A Redditors karma will increase (up arrow).
Total Karma:
Your total karma values include all karma categories shown in your profile (to include post, comment, awarder and awardee karma).
■ In order to submit a post / comment to certain Subreddits, moderators will only count / place value on certain karma you have received (usually comment karma).
■ Your karma levels will change depending on the amount of activity you have on Reddit and how your fellow Redditors respond to your posts / comments.
How is Karma Caluculated?
When you first start earning Karma, it looks like every upvote adds a point to it. Once you get into the thousands, however, the math becomes a little murkier.
Reddit uses an algorithm to calculate Karma and does not disclose exactly how it works. Allegedly, the more upvotes a link or comment gets, the less Karma each upvote is worth. That means a comment with 15K upvotes isn't necessarily going to give you 15K of comment karma.
Reddit Default Karma Rules
There are certain community and default rules that Reddit has established regarding karma.
In addition to the community rules, Reddit sets some default rules to exclude the following from Community Point calculations and distribution:
■ Karma earned on removed posts and comments does not count (including karma earned before removal)
■ Karma earned on deleted posts and comments does not count (including karma earned before deletion)
■ Karma earned on stickied or distinguished content does not count
■ Permabanned users are not eligible for Points distribution and do not appear on the distribution list. This includes users permanently banned by moderators from the community or banned from Reddit.
Subreddit Posts / Comments
Sometimes? Moderators will consider the amount of comment karma you currently have in order to be allowed to submit posts / comments to their Subreddits. Each Subreddit has different moderators. Therefore? Each Subreddit has different rules.
■ The amount of karma needed to submit posts / comments is decided by the Subreddit Moderators.
■ Check the rules to see how much karma you are required to have. If it is not detailed in the Subreddit rules? Ask the Moderators via ModMail.
■ If you do not have the required comment karma, you will not be able to submit posts / comments.
You can't change that.
If You Can't View a Post / Comment You Have Contributed?
If you can't view something after you have made a post / comment? Subreddits have a filtration set for hot. Reset it for new, and your contribution will show up.
If you still can't see your contribution?
There could be many reasons. Sometimes?
■ Redditors will delete what they have written. All comments in that string will be deleted.
■ Moderators remove posts / comments if they have violated a Subreddit rule.
■ AutoMod will remove posts / comments if there is an issue with the OP and the community rules. Also, if it has been directed to do so by the Moderator for certain scenarios.
■ Crowd Control features (when used correctly) will keep issues from happening by not permitting a potential offense to be contributed to the Subreddit.
■ Some Subreddits have guidelines in regards to how to format Subreddit contributions or what should or shouldn’t be included. If you accidentally missed something and broke one of the community’s rules, your contribution could be removed.
■ For numerous reasons, missing contributions are automatically removed by Moderators / AutoMods / spam filters. These scenarios likely occur because the Subredditor did not meet the Subreddits threshold requirements for contributions or violated a Subreddit rule.
■ Reddit could be experiencing incidents / issues that have nothing to do with your Reddit account. Check the status page to make ensure Reddit is functioning as expected.
• If there is an incident / issue, you can follow along to see when it will be resolved. Whatever is happening with Reddit?
• Your ability to view or utilize certain aspects of Reddit will be interrupted. You can keep checking back until the issue is resolved.
■ Don't forget? A Moderator has something known as Moderators discretion. They can remove a post / comment for any reason at any time. They make the rules in their Subreddit. In this scenario? They should inform you and provide an explanation for the post / comment removal.
If you still can't find a reason that explains your issue? Or if you feel that your contribution may have been removed by accident or unfairly?
Use ModMail to communicate with the Moderators. Write them once.
Purchasing Coins
You can purchase coins in order to award other Redditors for their posts / comments.
■ You can actually spend real money to purchase coins from Reddit to award other Redditors for their posts / comments.
■ Some awards that you receive are accompanied by coins that you can use to award other Redditors.
What to Do if You Receive an Award
You will receive a message when you are given an award.
You will receive the name of the person who sent you an award. You should always send a thank-you.
Sometimes, the person that sends you an award wishes to remain anonymous (so you may never know who sent you a particular award).
Anonymous Redditors will receive your thank you.
I always send a personal note to anyone that sends me an award to let them know how much I appreciate them thinking of me and taking time out of their busy day to acknowledge my post / comment.
It's just like sending your grandmother (or anyone else) a thank you note if they sent you a gift or money.
Blocking Redditors / Bullies
If someone is giving you a hard time / bullying you? You can block and / or report them. Someone mentioned it to me, and it is a really great tool to use.
■ They do not know you blocked and / or reported them - it is anonymous.
■ It provides peace of mind to you and everyone else witnessing the inappropriate / bullying behavior.
■ At the bottom of their comment? You will see three vertical dots. Click on the vertical dots.
■ You can block or report Redditors.
• Neither one of you will be able to see each other's contributions (posts / comments).
• Redditors sometimes create other accounts to continue their harassment. Of course? You will not know this unless they tell you.
• Either way? Block them again.
Removing the Blocked Feature from a Redditor
Occasionally? You might feel the need to purge your Blocked Account list. And that is okay. Whatever happens? You can always use the blocked feature (again) anytime you want.
■ To remove the blocked feature:
• Press on your Avatar.
• Scroll all the way to Settings, at the very end.
• Under General, press Account Settings.
• Scroll down to Manage Blocked Accounts
• Press Unblock in order to allow communication to continue with the formerly blocked Redditor.
• No one will be notified that the block has been removed. Just like no one was notified when the block was put in place.
Controlling What you See
When you see a post you dont like, you can click on the 3 dots at the top right of said post and either click "show fewer posts like this" or "mute (subreddit name)"
How to Be a Great Redditor
■ Make friends, be kind, and always be gracious.
■ Make sure you can back up your statements with factual and legitimate / reputable resources. Alternative facts (lies) are not encouraged.
■ I always try to leave links to reputable resources that back up what I'm saying. Try to use more than one resource.
Always have a sense of humor.
■ Be open to new concepts and facts. Sometimes your idea may be factually incorrect. Be open to changing your opinion if the facts point somewhere else.
■ Research research research! Google is your friend.
■ Do not cut and paste someone else's posts / comments or work. That is not very nice, to say the least.
• Always make sure that you identify posts / comments or work that belong to others.
• Somewhere in your post / comment? Submit the source link. Always give credit where credit is due.
■ Offer your experience to people who ask for help.
■ Don't be judgemental, bully, or make fun of people because their opinions / may be different from yours.

2023.06.01 09:53 GenerallyALurker Just beat the Act III boss first try!

Team in order was Alchemist PD, Soloist Jester, Venomdrop GR, and Monarch Leper.
After getting my ass whooped 2x in a row by the 2nd act boss I finally killed them and unlocked a shit ton of stagecoach and inn items and took Jester for a spin for the first time. I unlocked both the free whiskey generation stagecoach item and the '+1 items from stagecoach items' item which was a dream combo, although I couldn't use all the items for most of my run as my Leper and Plague Doctor got resolute before the first inn and the graverobber had curmudgeon, meaning I could only use the single target whiskeys on my Grave Robber and Jester. For most of the run I couldn't get to a hospital as I was using the Shambler pet (and my first region I had a region reward for not visiting the hospital so I purposely avoided it) but a lucky scout from an assistance tower in the last secured it. Still, I had no problem having relationships at near max most of the time except between the Jester and Plague Doctor, and fully maxed things in time for the mountain and got my first 6 positive relationship in time for the mountain to get the Utopia achievement too.
Got kind of lucky with trinkets and pet combo as I secured the tainted trinket that gives auto stealth and later His Rings meaning a crit with upgraded poison darts (which was often) could put on 16 blight/turn in one move. Got the Slice Off trinket for my Jester after the first region and got the locked position trophy from the tangle as my second region. These two were absolute DoT machines, and the Plague Doc was no slouch, either.
I was initially going to go in blind but the run was going so well and I accidentally spoiled the appearance of the Act III boss (as well as hearing all the complaints about it) that I wanted to see how to fight it, so I looked it up towards the end of the last region, at a point where reaching the lair was impossible. I figured I was f*!cked with the general trophy being my only trophy and taunt not working for the seen tokens, but turns out the wiki/discourse was inaccurate! Taunt still worked and I managed to get all 4 seen tokens on the Leper easily thanks to an auto-taunt trinket + intimidate + book of creative insults. I foolishly wasted both my uses of Solemnity which caused my Leper to have to make 1 more death's door check than necessary but with the other 3 heroes churning out ridiculous levels of DoT the Focused Fault was quickly at a point where even if it took my Leper, it wouldn't be able to kill my team before the DoTs finished it off. I'm very happy that I had no deaths anyways.
NOTE: this is before the upcoming beta patch, as the eyes still started at the first stage and summoned the focused fault when they were all at the fourth stage.
So TL;DR: very hyped, DoT characters are very strong in this game when the mechanics don't no-sell them, spoiling myself was 100% necessary to win, and taunt still works for this boss in the current patch. If you want to beat the Act III boss before, taunter+healer+2/3 DoT characters works wonders.

2023.06.01 09:32 the1corrupted New AM5 Build will not run EXPO settings

EDIT: Not VDD_SOC, it was VCORE_SOC voltage in CPU settings. Added some additional settings that were tried (with failure). Fix formatting a little.
Computer Type: Desktop
GPU: Radeon 7900 XTX
CPU: RYZEN 9 7900X 12 Core 24 Thread
Motherboard: Gigabyte X670 Aorus Elite AX
BIOS Version: F9a (Latest as of 05/28/2023)
RAM: 32GB TeamGroup Delta Alpha DDR5JEDEC: 5200Mhz CL 42 @ 1.1VEXPO: 6000Mhz CL38 @ 1.25V
PSU: Corsair HX1000 (1000W modular)

Operating System & Version: WINDOWS 10 PRO 22H2
GPU Drivers: AMD Adrenalin 23.5.1
Chipset Drivers: AMD Chipset Drivers 5.05
Background Applications: N/A, issue is happening with burn in test
Description of Original Problem: I am unable to run any level of EXPO/XMP/DOCP profile on this system with stable CPU test run by OCCT. I have tried a myriad of configurations that will list below.
I am wondering if this is more indicative of the CPU or the Motherboard, or maybe I should wait for a more mature BIOS to drop.
I'm also open to any more manual memory profiles to try, to see if I can get 6000Mhz to work.
Troubleshooting: I have swapped for a different memory kit (same manufacturer). I have a new CPU in the mail on the way to test to see if it might be the CPU.I will start with the settings that PASSED
  1. Standard Auto Out-of-the-box no tweaking/overclocking done at all. Let the computer be the computer. CPU burn in 30 minutes @ 95 C, 4.8 Ghz
  2. Standard JEDEC memory speed/timings. Applying a -0.0025V offset to VCORE_SOC in BIOS. CPU burn in 30 minutes @ 75 C, 5.37 Ghz
And the configurations that have FAILED in less than 2 minutes:
  1. Applying -0.0010V to -0.0025V offset to CPU Vcore (Dynamic VCore DVID), and the same offset at the same time to VCORE_SOC
    1. To replicate: In BIOS, Tweaker menu, at the bottom, set CPU voltages from "Auto" to "Normal" and it will unlock an offset modifier.
  2. Running all voltages "Auto" and running EXPO profile
  3. Manually entering everything I could figure that the EXPO profile was trying to apply.
    1. 6000 Mhz memory speed
    2. Sub timing and timing profile (this was the most tedious thing ever)
    3. Voltage applications where it was visible/accessible.
    4. Trying to slightly increase SOC voltage to 1.28V
    5. Change memory voltages from "Auto" to "Normal"
  4. Disabled Auto Boost. Disabled Low Latency support.

2023.06.01 09:25 newyorkpiano PianoDisc Installation Polyester Piano finish repair

Many people are not aware that humidity can have a profound effect on the tuning and performance of your piano. Humidity is a measure of how much water vapor is in the air, relative to the maximum amount of water vapor it can hold (that’s why it’s called relative humidity!). Your piano is subject to wide swings in humidity. This is particularly true in the Hudson Valley, where the majority of our clients live. In the summer, humidity levels can go as high as 100%, while in the winter, your heating system can drop the relative humidity in your home into the single digits.
What does this mean for your piano? When the humidity is high, the soundboard and bridges absorb moisture and swell, increasing the tension of the strings and forcing the piano sharp. When the humidity is low, the opposite happens - the soundboard and bridges release moisture and shrink, reducing the downward pressure of the strings and forcing the piano flat. This is why almost all piano manufacturers - and your piano technician - recommend that your piano is tuned twice a year. In addition to forcing your piano out of tune, increased humidity affects the action parts, swelling the wood and increasing friction, which can make your action respond sluggishly (a major cause of “sticking” keys).
How can you mitigate the effects of humidity on your piano? There are several options. The absolute best solution is to have your whole house humidity controlled. This involves either attaching a humidifier to your HVAC system or installing a separate humidifiedehumidifier system in your home. While this is the best solution, it can be very expensive to install and maintain, and is usually cost prohibitive.
The next, and we think best, solution is to install a humidity control system directly in your piano. The Dampp Chaser company, makers of the Piano Life Saver system, is the only company making these systems. Over the past 74 years they have perfected their system and adapted it to work in all pianos. This system maintains the relative humidity of your piano within a few percent of the ideal level of 45% Relative Humidity. A humidistat regulates the humidity, similar to the way your thermostat regulates temperature. If the humidity is high, the humidistat activates low power dehumidifier bars to dry out the piano. If the humidity is low, the humidistat activates a humidifier - a gentle version of that which you might put in a room. Periodically, you must fill the humidifier tank with water. This can be disconcerting the first few times, pouring water into a tube that disappears into your piano!
In grand pianos, the system is installed underneath the piano, in direct proximity to the soundboard. An under cover will aid in the effectiveness of these systems. A dehumidifier bar is installed at either end of the underside of the piano, and a humidifier tank is located in the approximate middle.
In vertical pianos, the system is installed in the lower half of the piano, inside the knee board. There is one dehumidifier bar which runs the width of the piano, and the humidifier tank generally rests on the bottom board. A watering tube extends from the top of the knee board to underneath the key bed.

May this one be the one?
Hey,
I've recently added a post with a red 318i you guys hated on cuz it was cancerous. May this one be the one? Looking for drivable E30 2/4door I can work on and use it regularly (not as a daily as I don't drive too often)
57000 czk is roughly 2400 eur
Owner claims the car working but license needs to be renewed as it doesn't have one.
