Officials for years have been cleaning up tire after tire from the ocean floor off Broward County-removing what was once meant to create a fish habitat but turned out to be an environmental mess.
A University of Hawaii diver who was involved in the project told the Fort Lauderdale News in 1979 that the tires were sunk in bundles of 10 or 12 and the bands used to hold them were supposed to break after being underwater, allowing the tires to fan out.
Today the path of tires covers about 34 acres of the ocean floor.
"The increase in cost is due to the increased level of effort needed to remove the remaining tires as they are no longer in close proximity to one another so additional time and divers are needed to retrieve the tires," according to a state DEP spokesperson.

Im a 35 year old Real Estate Broker in South Florida. I have always made at least six figures working sales and rentals here in Fort Lauderdale/Miami area. This year however it has been very slow and difficult. Im also a little burned out talking about Real Estate all the time. Yes I have plenty of freedom. I work from home and mostly sit on the computer all day, but this gets boring. I have a team of about 20 agents that are mostly part time. I make passive income every month from their production. I guess my question is: How is the life and earnings of a luxury car salesman? I know they have to work all the time but I would not mind. Ive been home for the past 10 years. Im bored AF. It would be nice to be around people daily as oppose to just home online. I'm a huge people person and tend to get along with just about anyone. I was thinking about making a resume and stopping by one of the many luxury dealerships in South Florida and giving it a shot. I see a lot of them on Indeed advertising openings for sales and finance. If I can make over $100K while wearing dress shoes, Ill be happy. Hard Manual Labor is not my thing. Im really really good at sales. My Real Estate company will still be there and my wife will handle most of the admin while I'm working.
