Hi all,
I'm trying to apply for a Vietnamese visa on arrival. I've used vietnamvisachoice.com and vietbamvisacenter.org
Whenever I hit their "apply" button, nothing happens. Does anyone know what's wrong? Or do you know any other reputable sites I can use?
I have a trinidad and tobago passport and would like to go in early May. So the VOA is my only option as the embassy has no available appointments.

I have an app, that shares users with local
filebrowser. Both lie within the same domain.I want to redirect users to filebrowser. The flow I'm using is the following:
- make a call to /api/filebrowser with the credentials needed to get a JWT token
- as soon as I get the response, I'm setting the token I got to cookiesUrl query, and send 303 redirect to filebrowser UI
I was hopping, that's gonna be enough, yet filebrowser still sends me to the login page, yet cookies are set correctlyIs there something I'm missing, or this approach ain't going to work and I have to use custom auth or proxy for this purpose?

2023.03.31 12:56 TheRockodile Persistence exists, files are stored and visible, but it won’t decode
| Hi all, this is my first time here so apologies if I’ve missed anything. Recently I upgraded my tails to the latest version because it failed to boot. After upgrading it, it booted fine. I used a new USB stick and installed a new Tails, and used that to clone and upgrade the old one because I didn’t want to lose my persistence. Since then the persistence has been unable to decrypt. Here’s my error messages at the time of login and manually enabling persistence on Tails. My error message as shown on the screenshot is Tails persistence error ‘UTF-8 codec can’t decode byte 0xb3 in position 0: invalid start byte’ I’ve tried the following solutions, none have worked for me. https://tails.boum.org/doc/persistent_storage/check/index.en.html I’ve set up an admin pass on login, and can see my persistence in the folder, I can also open them and look at them by entering my password, they’re all there, but tails cannot open them or load them up. Does anyone know what else I can try? Thank you in advance submitted by TheRockodile to tails [link] [comments] |

2023.03.31 10:18 Ricosss Circulating ketone bodies as signals for cardiovascular disease and mortality (Pub: 2023-03-30)
| https://academic.oup.com/eurheartj/advance-article/doi/10.1093/eurheartj/ehad176/7095066?login=false This editorial refers to ‘Circulating ketone bodies and cardiovascular outcomes: the MESA study’, by E. Shemesh et al., https://doi.org/10.1093/eurheartj/ehad087. Ketone bodies (KBs) are endogenous fuels which are generated by the liver in response to metabolic stress.1 There are three types of KB, of which β-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate can be used to generate ATP, whereas acetone is metabolically inert. While these metabolites provide efficient fuels for the starving body, previously they have primarily been recognized as signals for harm due to their role in the diagnosis of diabetic ketoacidosis. More recently it has been discovered that KBs are also produced under conditions of neurohormonal stress, and circulating concentrations have been found to be increased in a variety of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs).2 Ketogenesis in CVD is considered to be adaptive, as mice incapable of oxidizing KBs in their heart develop severe heart failure (HF) in response to injury,3 while treatment with KBs can improve cardiac function.1,4 While higher concentrations of KBs appear to correlate with the severity of neurohumoral stress, little is known about the association between circulating KBs and the incidence and prognosis of CVD. In this issue of the European Heart Journal, Shemesh et al. explored the relationship between circulating KBs and cardiovascular outcomes in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) registry of 6796 healthy individuals.5 Plasma concentrations of individual KBs were measured at study entry, and subjects were followed up for a mean duration of 13.6 years. The authors assessed correlations between individual and total KB concentrations and various cardiovascular outcomes. Interestingly, the authors observed consistent associations between higher concentrations of both the biologically active KBs β-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate as well as total KBs and the incidence of CVD. Associations were consistent for a composite endpoint of myocardial infarction, resuscitated cardiac arrest, stroke and cardiovascular death, and all other CVDs, as well as for the separate endpoints all-cause and CVD mortality. Of note, while there was a significant association between higher KB concentrations and the incidence of HF, the univariate associations between stroke or myocardial infarction were lost after multivariable adjustments. These findings led the authors to conclude that circulating KBs could serve as a biomarker for future CVD. The authors should be applauded for their diligent study, which provides in-depth evaluation of individual and total KBs, multiple definitions of CVD, and extensive multivariable adjustments. Furthermore, the lucid discussion provides a thorough interpretation of the predictive value of circulating KBs and the explanation of the role in different settings of cardiovascular health and disease. One of the main strengths of the current analysis is the fact that this is the first study to show a clear association between circulating KBs and the incidence of cardiovascular events in healthy individuals. Furthermore, these conclusions are drawn from a diverse, multiethnic cohort with a predictive value of circulating KBs in both sexes. As Shemesh et al. described in their Discussion, there are several preceding studies that did not find an association between KBs and CVD outcome parameters.5 We previously studied the association between KBs and outcomes in a population of healthy elderly subjects at risk for CVD and detected similar associations between circulating KBs and new-onset HF, showing that the association was stronger in females.6 In addition, others found an independent association between acetoacetate and incident HF in a population of healthy men.7 Interestingly, circulating KBs were also markedly increased in patients with an ST-elevation myocardial infarction, and higher concentrations were associated with left ventricular dysfunction after 4 months in these patients.8 These results substantiate the hypothesis that circulating KBs could function as a biomarker for CVD, although most evidence so far suggested that KB concentrations predicted HF and mortality.6,7,9,10 This hypothesis can be supported by the fact that circulating KBs were elevated further in the decompensated setting of HF and—when increased—were found to be associated with a higher all-cause mortality after 3 months.9,11 Of note, in the current analysis, KB concentrations were only significantly associated with the incidence of HF and CVD, and not with the incidence of stroke or myocardial infarction. Supposedly, evaluating associations between KBs and outcomes in different settings could increase the understanding of the role of KBs in cardio metabolism. Whilst a biomarker for disease, increased KBs could reflect a protective mechanism. In the stable chronic setting of HF, a cardiac shift towards increased cardiac utilization of KBs was shown to have beneficial effects on cardiac function.4,12,13 Providing an efficient energy source in a setting of decreased mitochondrial function, KB could serve as alternative fuel,14 not to mention other effects of KBs such as reduction of oxidative stress which could further benefit the failing heart.15 Furthermore, the authors refer to the hypothesis that the cardio-protective effects of sodium–glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors work through a metabolic switch in favour of KBs. Although a mechanistic study proving this mechanism is still lacking, evidence is accumulating that the metabolic switch towards KBs reflects an adaptive response in subjects with or at risk for CVD. Whether treatment with (exogenous) KBs is protective in this setting remains to be established. As the authors fairly state, the underlying mechanism responsible for the association between KBs and CVD is hard to unravel with an epidemiological study, among other things because KB metabolism can be influenced by many different factors, including diet, physical activity, and various hormones. Although the authors were able to correct for many different variables, including calory intake and physical activity, a mechanistic explanation is difficult to ascertain. Nevertheless, they did find a modest association between increased NT-proBNP levels and KB concentrations. In addition to insulin, a variety of hormones have been shown to influence KB concentrations, including natriuretic peptides and catecholamines.2 It is possible that similar mechanisms are involved with the associations demonstrated in the current manuscript. Unfortunately, no repeated measures of circulating KBs were available in the period leading up to the onset of CVD events. This could have given more insights into the role of KBs as a biomarker. Furthermore, the authors stratified their analysis for β-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate but did not explore the predictive value of the third ketone body, acetone. While β-hydroxybutyrate is the ketone body with the highest bioavailability, acetone is the breakdown product of acetoacetate and is metabolically inert. Previous literature hypothesized that the ‘idle’ acetone could therefore be a more suitable reflection of total ketogenesis.9,11 In this present study, in all models a stronger association for incident CVD events was found for acetoacetate as compared with β-hydroxybutyrate.5 Considering the difficulties in differentiation between ketogenesis, oxidation, and clearance of KB, analysis of acetone in this cohort could have strengthened the predictive value of KBs in the onset of CVD events even further. Lastly, the authors do not elaborate on the type of HF or left ventricular ejection fraction in this analysis. As the differences in pathophysiological development are becoming more and more apparent over recent years, Flores et al. described that an increased concentration of KBs was predominantly associated with HF with reduced ejection fraction and not with HF with preserved ejection fraction.6 Future studies should focus more on the associations with different HF subtypes to ascertain this hypothesis. In this work, Shemesh et al. amplify the existing proof that KBs could serve as a biomarker for new-onset HF and, moreover, they show how increased circulating levels of KBs can be predictive for other CVDs and that this association is independent of sex and ethnicity. Mechanistic underpinnings of ketogenesis in cardiovascular disease and whether these findings are protective or pernicious in this setting remain to be established. https://preview.redd.it/7yxrjzq9a1ra1.png?width=3988&format=png&auto=webp&s=ca7c2994b88a9386e75541dfa58dad9811695152 submitted by Ricosss to TheKetoScienceJournal [link] [comments] |

2023.03.31 08:06 chunkyhairball Should I Switch Linux Distributions? A Guide...
Should I Switch Linux Distributions? A Guide...
It's been said that most people who want to switch Linux distributions are mistaking what makes a Linux Distribution and what makes a Desktop Environment.
I don't entirely believe that's true. However, there are elements of the argument, especially to new Linux users, that may apply. I've done my best to organize my thoughts on the subject to help others make a choice on the matter.
- I want my user interface or icons to look different, but work in fundamentally the same way:
What you're probably after here is a new theme. With some exceptions, most Linux Desktop environments and window managers are VERY 'skinnable' or 'themeable'. You can find huge assortments of themes simply by typing the name of your desktop environment and 'themes' into your search engine of choice. You'll find many curated lists.
https://www.pling.com/ is worth checking out. I personally don't use their Pling store app, preferring to manually install themes or to install them from the OS's package manager or theme manager if they're available there.
https://www.deviantart.com/ is also a good place to look.
You may also be after new fonts. Again, your distribution's package manager probably has lots, but check out
https://fonts.google.com/ for a wealth of installable fonts. Again, fonts are very likely to be available from your package manager
A good example: When Garuda Linux (
https://garudalinux.org/) first started gaining traction, many people were excited by its new look and wanted to switch to it.
Garuda Linux's 'look' comes primarily from its carefully chosen theming, including icons from the Beautyline and Candy icon sets:
https://github.com/Tekh-ops/Garuda-Linux-Icons Those icons, fonts, and themes can be downloaded and installed on
any Linux distribution and not just Garuda.
- I want my user interface to work in a different way:
This one's a bit trickier. Usually, what newer Linux users are told is that what they're probably after is a new Desktop Environment or Window Manager. If you're frustrated with the way Gnome Desktop (
https://www.gnome.org/) works, then looking at KDE Plasma (
https://kde.org/plasma-desktop/) may be a good idea and vice-versa. Some users find that they prefer working almost solely with the keyboard rather than a keyboard and mouse combination. For these users, a tiling Window Manager such as i3 (
https://i3wm.org/) might be interesting. Additionally, you can download and install many shell extensions that change the way your particular Desktop Environment works.
With a few exceptions, you can install most Desktop Environments and Window Managers from your distribution's Package Manager without first removing an existing environment. Then, when you next login, you can switch to the new environment or use the existing environment if you feel the need to switch back.
Here's where it gets a bit tricky: In several cases, there are complex interactions between desktop environments and the rest of the operating system that have the potential to cause conflicting system components to be installed. If your package manager refuses to install one Desktop Environment without first uninstalling large parts of another, this may be what you're up against.
Frequently, the least complex way to install a new desktop environment is often to first back up your data and then install the same operating system you're used to, but taking care to select the 'flavor' of that operating system containing the Desktop environment you want.
Again taking Garuda as an example, the Garuda Linux website offers many different downloads as 'Editions', featuring different Desktop Environments or Window Managers:
https://garudalinux.org/downloads.html Some distributions refer to these as 'Flavors' or 'Spins'.
- I want to use applications that are offered with another Linux Distribution that are not installed with mine:
Many Linux Distributions exist for the sake of showcasing a particular application or set of applications. In almost all cases, however, those applications can be downloaded and installed on other Linux OSes from your default package manager.
In this case, it's simply unwise to install a new operating system just to get a new application. First search your OS's Package Manager to see if that application is available for install. If that doesn't work, look at manual installation steps on the application's website. Many applications are now offering 'containerized' versions to download in the popular Flatpak or Appimage formats that can be downloaded and installed very easily.
If you can't immediately install that new app from your package manger, check
https://flathub.org to see if it's available as a Flatpak.
- I want to learn the differences between different Linux Distributions:
This is a fairly good reason for switching to a new distribution. Different distributions have different ways of handling package management, administration, and security. Remember, however, that they all sit on top of the Linux Kernel. There's not going to be profound difference between the way Debian (
https://www.debian.org/) and Arch (
https://archlinux.org/) work when compared to, say, Windows and MacOSX.
It's also worth noting that most Linux distributions derive from only a handful of parent distributions.
Take a gander at this somewhat dated 'Linux Family Tree' to get an idea of how this works:
https://futurist.se/gldt/wp-content/uploads/12.10/gldt1210.png If you're currently using, say, Linux Mint (
https://linuxmint.com/) and want to try Pop! OS (
https://pop.system76.com/), remember that those are both derived from Ubuntu Linux (
https://ubuntu.com/), which is itself a derivation of Debian Linux. You're not going to notice a tremendous difference between them.
Now if you switch from Ubuntu to something like Suse Linux (
https://www.suse.com/), the changes become significantly more noticeable. Suse is set up to be administered in a somewhat different way from Ubuntu. These are not aesthetic differences, but instead are differences in the way the package manager applications work or system setup and administration behaves.
Before switching for this reason, take the time to understand what 'family' your Linux distribution belongs to and what another family may offer or how it differs.
- My distribution is very full-featured and comes with lots of preinstalled software. I want to switch to a distribution that's much more minimal and allows for greater customization:
This is a fairly reasonable reason to switch Linux Distributions. Many Linux-based Operating Systems make a lot of effort to position themselves to be usable by beginners or newcomers to Linux.
(These tend to be, but are not always, in the 'Debian' family of OSes-- Ubuntu, Pop!, Mint, etc...)
Other distributions are less 'hand-holdy' and are aimed at more technically proficient users, hobbyists, and tinkerers. Arch- and Gentoo-based (
https://www.gentoo.org/) OSes are good examples.
There is, of course, a rainbow of alternatives in between. Before making the decision to switch, be sure to check out as much of the documentation for the OS you're considering as possible, especially the installation instructions.
This is very much a 'look before you leap' situation. Caveat Emptor!
- I'm currently looking to move from a 'Long-term Support' distribution to a 'Rolling Release' distribution.
Again, this is very much a valid reason to want to change distributions. However, there are some VERY important caveats.
By definition, your Long-term distribution has a LOT more testing and bug-fixing built into it than any given Rolling distribution. Even then, important bug-fixes, like security updates and the like, are rolled out very promptly by almost all Linux Distributions, even those that seem 'stuck in the mud'.
Rolling Release-type distributions offer access to cutting edge software releases and experimental packages, but that often at a cost of that more exhaustive testing. In some cases, packages are made available as soon as they compile correctly.
Using the car analogy, Long-term Support distributions are the well-worn daily drivers that can always be depended upon to get you from point A to point B, requiring only routine maintenance. Rolling Release distributions are the cars favored by tuners and tinkerers, those who
want to experiment and test different setups.
The most important facet of this discussion to take away is the fact that, simply due to that amount of time spent testing, bugs and security problems sneak into Rolling Releases more often. If you have important data or work to do and aren't absolutely sure how well that data is backed up or how quickly you can regain that workflow, stick to the more stable Long-term Support distributions.
Summary
I hope that this document is helpful to newer Linux users trying to make good decisions about their OS. Additionally, a good way to add to your decision-making knowledge is to read the discussion forums on Reddit and on the OS's websites. That can give you a better, more realistic idea of what different distributions can offer you.
If you have any suggestions for improvements to this document, don't hesitate to let me know.
This document and any updates to it will be available at

2023.03.31 02:00 livia2lima Day 20 - Scripting
INTRO
Today is the final session for the course. Pat yourself on the back if you worked your way through all lessons!
You’ve seen that a continual emphasis for a sysadmin is to automate as much as possible, and also how in Linux the system is very “transparent” - once you know where to look!
Today, on this final session for the course, we’ll cover how to write small programs or “shell scripts” to help manage your system.
When typing at the Linux command-line you're directly communicating with "the command interpreter", also known as "the shell". Normally this shell is
bash, so when you string commands together to make a script the result can be called either a '"shell script", or a "bash script".
Why make a script rather than just typing commands in manually?
- It saves typing. Remember when we searched through the logs with a long string of grep, cut and sort commands? If you need to do something like that more than a few times then turning it into a script saves typing - and typos!
- Parameters. One script can be used to do several things depending on what parameters you provide
- Automation. Pop your script in /etc/cron.daily and it will run each day, or install a symlink to it in the appropriate /etc/rc.d folder and you can have it run each time the system is shut down or booted up.
START WITH A SHEBANG!
Scripts are just simple text files, but if you set the "execute" permissions on them then the system will look for a special line starting with the two characters “#” and “!” - referred to as the "shebang" (or "crunchbang") at the top of the file.
This line typically looks like this:
#!/bin/bash
Normally anything starting with a "#" character would be treated as a comment, but in the first line and followed by a "!", it's interpreted as:
"please feed the rest of this to the /bin/bash program, which will interpret it as a script". All of our scripts will be written in the
bash language - the same as you’ve been typing at the command line throughout this course - but scripts can also be written in many other "scripting languages", so a script in the Perl language might start with #!/usbin/perl and one in Python #!/usbin/env python3
YOUR FIRST SCRIPT
You'll write a small script to list out who's been most recently unsuccessfully trying to login to your server, using the entries in
/valog/auth.log.
Use vim to create a file, attacker, in your home directory with this content:
#!/bin/bash # # attacker - prints out the last failed login attempt # echo "The last failed login attempt came from IP address:" grep -i "disconnected from" /valog/auth.logtail -1 cut -d: -f4 cut -f7 -d" "
Putting comments at the top of the script like this isn't strictly necessary (the computer ignores them), but it's a good professional habit to get into.
To make it executable type:
chmod +x attacker
Now to run this script, you just need to refer to it by name - but the current directory is (deliberately) not in your $PATH, so you need to do this either of two ways:
/home/support/attacker ./attacker
Once you're happy with a script, and want to have it easily available, you'll probably want to move it somewhere on your $PATH - and
/uslocal/bin is a normally the appropriate place, so try this:
sudo mv attacker /uslocal/bin/attacker
...and now it will Just Work whenever you type attacker
EXTENDING THE SCRIPT
You can expand this script so that it requires a parameter and prints out some syntax help when you don't give one. There are a few new tricks in this, so it's worth studying:
# ## topattack - list the most persistent attackers # if [ -z "$1" ]; then echo -e "\nUsage: `basename $0` - Lists the top attackers by IP" exit 0 fi echo " " echo "Persistant recent attackers" echo " " echo "Attempts IP " echo "-----------------------" grep "Disconnected from authenticating user root" /valog/auth.logcut -d: -f 4 cut -d" " -f7sort uniq -c sort -nr head -$1
Again, use vim to create "topattack", chmod to make it executable and mv to move it into
/uslocal/bin once you have it working correctly.
(BTW, you can use whois to find details on any of these IPs - just be aware that the system that is "attacking" you may be an innocent party that's been hacked into).
A collection of simple scripts like this is something that you can easily create to make your sysadmin tasks simpler, quicker and less error prone.
And yes, this is the last lesson - so please, feel free to write a review on how the course went for you and what you plan to do with your new knowledge and skills!

Can tmux controls span multiple macOS or Linux terminal _windows_?
I'm a complete tmux newbie. And I doubt it can.
Details I suspect I need a window manager to do this kind of control, with tmux as a "sublevel". eg: I used decades ago
https://www.fvwm.org back in the day to configure/program a series of keyboard shortcuts (think vim for desktop-window-manager control across multiiple monitors/displays) to open X Window sessions/windows/logins to different machines, etc. I'm dating myself.
I'm now trying to do something similar today. I suspect it's quite feasible in Linux/X-Windows or whatever window managers are Linux state of the art. macOS, I suspect, will have a larger challenge doing something like this.
Before I jump into this land of window-manager stuff, I first want to see if tmux has any magic to span control across multiple windows -- and maybe this means multiple tmux "control sessions" (I'm making up this sytax, as I know almost nothing about tmux) communicating with one another... or something. Again, seems like this is better suited in the hands of a window manager.
I -do- want cross-platform support if i can get it, because I split time between macOS and Linux. MSWindows support is not needed.
